        Yeah, I was wondering about that myself. Like, if I tried to dive, it would be worse than that. I wouldn't be able to flip around at all, and I would end up entering the water much like he did. But I would get the same score, so would that make me as good as that guy, by Olympic standards?         Judging rules of diving

        "A judge in a diving contest shall award from 0 to 10 points for a dive according to his or her overall impression using the following criteria:

        • 10: Excellent
        • 8½ - 9½: Very good
        • 7 - 8: Good
        • 5 - 6½: Satisfactory
        • 2½ - 4½: Deficient
        • ½ - 2: Unsatisfactory
        • 0: Completely Failed

        When judging a dive, the judge must not be influenced by any factor other than the technique and execution of the dive. The dive must be considered without regard to the approach to the starting position, the difficulty of the dive, or any movement beneath the surface of the water.

        The following elements must be considered with equal importance by judge before awarding a score:

        • the starting position and the approach
        • the take-off
        • the flight
        • the entry

        Synchronized diving competition involves two competitors diving simultaneously from the springboards or platform. The competition is judged on how the two divers individually perform their dives, and how the two divers as a team synchronize their performance.

        The factors to be considered when judging synchronized diving are:

        • the starting position, the approach and the take-off, including the similarity of the height
        • the coordinated timing of the movements during the flight
        • the similarity of the angles of the entries
        • the comparative distance from the springboard or platform of the entry
        • the coordinated timing of the entries"

        Because he was still spinning he didn't complete the dive he was supposed to. He failed the dive and his entry was terrible. If there were negative scores he would have gotten them. There is no E for effort.

        You could easily jump straight and do a pencil dive. You would probably at least 1 point if you landed feet first... and with a difficulty of like .1 you'd score more than that guy.

        I thought the same thing, I mean it looked pretty good until he missed grabbing his leg. Other than the whole criteria posted below, I can only assume they're judging based on what he was supposed to do (like a routine in gymnastics, they can make it look really good, but still do the wrong routine) and they decided that he didn't do enough to merit any points.

        This is correct. He failed the dive he was supposed to do, so he doesn't get any scores. Someone could do the most incredible front 3.5, but if they wrote down a front 4.5, they will fail the dive.

        Yep, I dove competitively for a long time and if they say "Forward 3.5 somersault in the pike position" and you do anything else, its a failed dive. I remember seeing a girl, who thought she knew her dive order (you sort of do, but sometimes they change things around, or your coach writes them in the wrong order etc) and she didn't listen to the announcer. She did a different dive quite well, but still received zeros.

        Haha I was never that good. I dove for my high school. I did start diving at 4. I couldn't get over my fear of heights for the high dive, and there was nowhere near us that had platforms so I never really got past the regional meets.

        Hate is a strong word. It's more of a mild phobia. I've been attacked by a dog when I was younger and have been afraid of them since then. I'm always a little nervous around dogs except some that I've been around for a while and I trust (I.E : my neighbor's dog).

          You will probably start seeing it in the news soon, but there's actually a syndrome named after people who think they will be able to perform Olympic feats after watching the games on TV. It known as Post-Olympic Stress-Related Phobiorder and has been responsible for a number of belly flops all over the country.             This will probably get buried but I'm gonna say my piece anyways.

            My aunt has a dog who actually does this. Her name is Kaya, and she is a black poodle and the biggest princess I know. She will not get into the water without her "life jacket" which is a makeshift buoyancy device made out of cut up pool noodles wrapped around her stomach . She will then do the wimpiest dog paddle I have ever seen. Seriously though, it's fucking hilarious.
