Pluto in the down-right corner made me sad :(

[–]LpShyGuy 60 points61 points ago

I feel so bad, they dont like him just cuz he's fun sized

[–]new_noise 4 points5 points ago

"Eight planets bullied number nine until he fell."

[–]heyguysitslogan 1 point2 points ago

Aesop Rock! I get the reference! I feel relevent.

[–]ManOfDoom 1 point2 points ago

When he said that Pluto "finally found his home" that actually did make me feel better

[–]Aquard 2 points3 points ago

That's a fun-sized Saturn, too. The Earth's bigger than it.

[–]ilifwdrht78 11 points12 points ago

It's okay Pluto, I'm not a planet either.

[–]kancas 8 points9 points ago

Want to feel sadder? Latest xkcd, year 2041.

[–]pluto 6 points7 points ago

sighs

[–]derpina428 2 points3 points ago

Pluto can party with Eris, Haumea, Makemake and Ceres.

[–]random_laugh 0 points1 point ago

ha.

[–]eccentricdaydreamer 1 point2 points ago

It is okay, pluto gets revenge.

[–]davidtho 34 points35 points ago

Only problem with space parties is theres no atmosphere.

[–]mongster2 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, they can be pretty lifeless.

[–]malogos 60 points61 points ago

Must fight.... Urge... Must fight...

It's not to scale!! Warning! Picture is not scientifically accurate!

gasp

[–]splel_cechk_fwt 10 points11 points ago

If it was, Earth would barely be visible.

[–]MetaphorSoup 5 points6 points ago

Those are some enormous balloons!!

[–]Trombone_Hero92 2 points3 points ago

I was okay with it not being to scale, cause you know, comic. But I had mistaken Neptune for Earth, cause it was about the same size as Mars and Venus, and blue. Then I realized that Earth was larger than Neptune in this. Then I raged.

[–]Thereminz 1 point2 points ago

yeah, should have at least made neptune bigger than earth

[–]Potater757 1 point2 points ago

Venus isn't that far off from earth, in terms of scale. Only 700 km around in real life.

[–]roofied_elephant 22 points23 points ago

D'aww...Poor Pluto...

[–]jikki-san 5 points6 points ago

Ooh, Venus showed! There's always that one hottie next door...

[–]Skafsgaard 3 points4 points ago

Poor Pluto! :(

I just realized that every single comment here is about Pluto, hahah.

[–]Acebulf 23 points24 points ago

Alright, enough with the NASA bashing.

First off, NASA didn't make the decision. NASA focuses on aeronautical engineering and space engineering. The definition of a planet would be categorized as astronomical, thus not in NASA's purview.

NASA is also a national organization, and thus does not have purview to decide for the entirety of humanity what is a planet or not.

The association which took the decision in a meeting in Prague was the International Astronomical Union.

Secondly, the decision was not simply "Alright let's just say Pluto is not a planet". Astronomers found an asteroid (Sedna) which was bigger than Pluto. It conformed to the previous definition of "planet" without actually having the characteristics we would expect to find in a planet.

The goal of having a definition is to make an ensemble that we can make generalizations for. If when we try to make generalizations, but always have to exclude some objects, what good does the definition have? Per this, neither Pluto, nor Sedna fit the generalizations of planets, while still being categorized as such.

So the IAU had a choice : either it could accept an asteroid as a planet, with many of the characteristics of planets applying to "all planets except Pluto and Sedna" or it could redefine "planet" as something for which the generalizations would apply.

The categorization of Pluto as a planet was already a stretch, only being categorized as a planet because of other categories not existing.

With Sedna coming into play, it was evident that a better category would be needed. Thus the category "Dwarf Planet" was created, with Sedna and Pluto being categorized as such.

For another example of term redefinition, this was also done with the classification of 1 as a prime number.

The decision had to be made, but it angered some people who dislike change and educators who would have to change lessons and whatnot.

Nevertheless, it was the right decision. If you guys had real reasons other than "When I grew up Pluto was a planet", discussing them would be interesting, but as this is not the case, please stop the NASA-bashing.

Edit : RiflemanLax made me look again at which semi-planet was responsible for the change. It was not Ceres (as I previously suggested), but 90377 Sedna. (Also, see Edit 2)

From Wikipedia:

The discovery of Sedna resurrected the question of which astronomical objects should be considered planets and which should not. On March 15, 2004, articles on Sedna in the popular press reported that a tenth planet had been discovered. This question was answered under the International Astronomical Union definition of a planet, adopted on August 24, 2006, which mandated that a planet must have cleared the neighborhood around its orbit. Sedna has a Stern–Levison parameter estimated to be much less than 1,[d] and therefore cannot be considered to have cleared the neighborhood, even though no other objects have yet been discovered in its vicinity. To qualify as a dwarf planet, Sedna must be shown to be in hydrostatic equilibrium. It is bright enough, and therefore large enough, that this is expected to be the case.[57]

EDIT 2: Eris was also one of the !planets that were considered in the change. As per RiflemanKax.

[–]rtphokie 5 points6 points ago

Bravo.

The IAU was faced with a new reality, one that didn't have 9 planets to contend with, but hundreds. When Pluto was declared a planet, we had no idea whether or not there were planets orbiting other stars, today we know that. Pluto was relabeled a minor planet because it makes more sense and fits this new view of the universe. It could change again.

It's fun to recall our early education about the universe and feel a little reminiscent about learning about the distant, small body. But that's where it should end. I find scientists that go on and on about this highly suspect. Similarly, teachers who whine about this should really take time to consider what they are teaching and whether they really get what science is all about.

Yes nomenclature and grouping of like things is very important in science but it's for that very reason that Pluto's labeling was changed. It's not like the other planets.

[–]e60deluxe 3 points4 points ago

Heres the crux of the entire thing, if Pluto had been discovered 50 years later, no one would ever think to call it a planet.

I heard reddit loves NDT....for those so inclined to learn a bit more:

[–]Fenris_uy 0 points1 point ago

The planets outside the Solar System aren't the cause of Pluto demotion, the new bunch of "planets" inside our Solar System are the cause Pluto got demoted.

[–]Phantom_Scarecrow 2 points3 points ago

Or as Neil DeGrasse Tyson explained, "All I did was drive the getaway car!" http://www.theverge.com/2012/3/26/2903224/dr-neil-degrasse-tyson-killing-pluto-on-the-verge

[–]RiflemanLax 2 points3 points ago

Stop me if you can find a flaw, but Eris was discovered in 2005, which led to Pluto's demotion. And it isn't an asteroid, but a trans-Neptunian Object. Ceres was discovered in 1801.

[–]Acebulf 2 points3 points ago

Yep, good call. Although it was not Ceres, Eris was not either the !planet i was looking for, but actually 90377 Sedna.

From Wiki:

The discovery of Sedna resurrected the question of which astronomical objects should be considered planets and which should not. On March 15, 2004, articles on Sedna in the popular press reported that a tenth planet had been discovered. I haven't read all the comments so I might have missed the specific posts, sorry if i did. Where we're people bashing NASA for Pluto? I'm just making sure you weren't claiming the artist was making that statement. I'm sorry if I'm out of line. Simply curious.

[–]Acebulf 2 points3 points ago

When I posted this there were 8 comments, with 3 of them bashing NASA. Since I posted this, they have been downvoted, so you can see them at the bottom of the page.

[–]mookdaruch 2 points3 points ago

Aah, they were indeed below my radar, excellent research/commentary by the way, are you an expert or an enthusiast / fanatic?

[–]Acebulf 2 points3 points ago

Physicist. But I really don't touch astronomy that much. I just happen to know how things are defined in science (conventions) and the reason for reclassifications such as this. (It happens in all branches of science)

I have an interest for all things sciency, and some knowledge that comes with it, but not because of my career. (Well I chose my career is because I love sciency stuff)

What I'm trying to say here is that I may be considered someone who works with experts, but really the knowledge would be accessible by an enthusiast and some reading time.

[–]Natans 2 points3 points ago

Excellent write-up! The whole situation is a great example of the self-correcting nature of the scientific process.

Science, fuck yeah!

[–]Acebulf 1 point2 points ago

Comin' again to save the motherfuckin' day yeah!

[–]anyalicious 1 point2 points ago

I never thought that anyone was being serious when they bashed NASA on behalf of Pluto. I just like how people joke-rallied around Pluto as if it could feel.

[–]baruch_shahi 1 point2 points ago

this was also done with the classification of 1 as a prime number.

What are you referencing here? Was the number 1 considered prime at some point in time?

[–]baruch_shahi 0 points1 point ago

I think that this answers my questions better: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prime_number#Primality_of_one

[–]Roik 0 points1 point ago

TIL 1 is not a prime number. Welp.

[–]baruch_shahi 0 points1 point ago

We like our prime factorizations to be unique :P

[–]OwnCarmacode 2 points3 points ago

and they can play beer-pong with the moon

[–]ferdoodle24 5 points6 points ago

[–]genzahg 5 points6 points ago

Goddammit, Sun. You burned it!

[–]zmeace 4 points5 points ago

Shouldnt Mars be pictured with a rover on it?

[–]mookdaruch 0 points1 point ago

8 month old drawing

[–]darkslide3000 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, cuz there were totally no rovers on there 9 months ago... o_O

[–]SorryImJustHonest 0 points1 point ago

None of the important ones!

[–]EarlobeAnalProbe 6 points7 points ago

The day Uranus turned 18 was the happiest day of my life.

[–]jaasx 3 points4 points ago

I'd party with Uranus.

[–]ryoner89 4 points5 points ago

I felt legitimate sadness for Pluto when I noticed him in the bottom corner. Poor little guy. :(

[–]imbored53 6 points7 points ago

You can take solace in knowing he's a lifeless frozen rock.

[–]IrvingI80 1 point2 points ago

Fuck it. For my Pluto is, and will be, a planet forever.

Hey Pluto! Come here, let's make our own party :D

[–]drfunshine 1 point2 points ago

hey guess what your party sucks and no one wants to be here. never throw one again

[–]RedditorNewbz 1 point2 points ago

Fuck. You forgot to invite Pluto.

[–]ChaplinStrait 2 points3 points ago

Poor Pluto :/

[–]VinnieChant 2 points3 points ago

Sad pluto is sad

[–]skyloftknight 2 points3 points ago

Poor Pluto. You will always be invited to my dwarf planet parties instead.

[–]Popehunter 2 points3 points ago

My Wife laughed this is a good joke!

[–]SquareSoft 2 points3 points ago

Maybe we should send a party to Pluto!

[–]Drewthebearjew 2 points3 points ago

The left out Pluto in the bottom right corner is the best part of this picture

[–]Mako18 2 points3 points ago

I don't think I could handle the gravity of the situation.

[–]Klaveir980 -1 points0 points ago

Oh why didn't I think to repost this for membase? I could have made some mad karma yo!

[–]TheFlyingWombat 1 point2 points ago

I want this print so badly for my sons room. Do you know the artist?

[–]mookdaruch 1 point2 points ago

I DO! We keep the original hung up in our office.

[–]TheFlyingWombat 0 points1 point ago

So??? Make with the artist name...

[–]ravecave88[S] 0 points1 point ago

no sorry :( if i knew it id tell you!

[–]SorryImJustHonest -1 points0 points ago

That's the first world problem of reposts huh?

[–]BobRossNTV 1 point2 points ago

Google images image-based search is your friend!

[–]mookdaruch 1 point2 points ago

Not in this case. The artist never posted it outside of their very locked down Facebook, a bunch of friends actually took copies and posted them a few months ago.

[–]amspaucm 1 point2 points ago

I'd like this on a shirt, please!

[–]mookdaruch 2 points3 points ago

I'll see what I can do.

THESE PLANETS ARE NOT DRAWN TO SCALE.

[–]Rainbow_Farter 5 points6 points ago

you don't say!

[–]stanfan114 -1 points0 points ago

Jupiter's gravity well would be so deep all the other planets would fall in. Except Pluto, because fuck Pluto apparently.

[–]Roik 0 points1 point ago

In case you didn't get the memo, Pluto is not a planet.

[–]stanfan114 0 points1 point ago

I know.

[–]mentox -1 points0 points ago

If you're on Reddit and you hate puns, you're gonna have a bad time.

[–]darkslide3000 0 points1 point ago

Mars needs to hold another baloon (some others too, but they are less important).

[–]gergl 0 points1 point ago

Perhaps i didn't read the comments thoroughly, but i don't believe this was said. As a new ish redditor am i really the one who has to bring up that this was a bad joke eel not too long ago?

[–]nationaltreasure -3 points-2 points ago

I hate you

[–]nationaltreasure 1 point2 points ago

[–]mookdaruch 0 points1 point ago
