In this case it's obviously the owner. She reacted in COMPLETELY the wrong way to an obvious sign of aggression, which will only encourage further aggression from the dog. If this dog were a Rottweiler, I guarantee she'd be reprimanding it... but no, since it's a cute little dog, nobody cares. I bet she also doesn't care if it jumps up on her, barks at the mailman, or chases the cat. Doesn't matter to her because it's cute and little (and therefore "harmless"), but cute little dogs still need manners and can cause some pretty bad injuries. My uncle lost a finger to a Scottish terrier.

It's almost never the dog, it's the owner who made it that way.

If a dog like that bit ny finger off I would honestly punch it in the face. I've never hit a pet out of anger before but that would provoke immediate violence from me.

I also think that people underestimate the tenacity of many small breeds. I mean some of these dogs were bred to go into other animals dens and basically fight to the death. Terriers were not selected to be gentle creatures.

You should never, ever, punish a dog for giving you a fair warning. If you yell/spank/etc a dog that is warning you that it's upset, you are teaching it "don't warn me next time, and go ahead and bite."

This is the greatest mistake people make with "bully breeds". People think "your dog is big and scary, so it should NEVER growl or snarl or anything!" Yes, growling and nipping are scary from bigger dogs, but on the other side of the coin if you teach the dog "growling is bad" all it understands is "giving a fair warning is bad."

This is why so many people wind up with situations where they say "I don't get it, my dog always seems calm and sweet and one day it just snapped!" Typically, dogs don't "just snap" unless they've first been taught that giving a warning sign is a bad thing.

But ignoring the situation isn't the correct response either, you're somewhat right on that aspect.

Small dog syndrome. Owners don't train and discipline small dogs as well as they do big ones, because when a big dog is barking and freaking out, its dangerous or whatever, and so they have to work to stop it, but when its a small dog everyone is like "lol who cares" and they just pick them up and throw them in the laundry basket or something.

Yep. We got my grandparents pom when it was two years old; they couldn't take care of it anymore. They just cleaned it up when he pooped in the house and hadn't trained it well. My parents don't put up with shit from animals and disciplined it well. It never pooped in the house and didn't randomly bark after the first week.

You can't say that this isn't a common thing with breeds like this. If it was just "the owner's fault" then different breeds wouldn't behave differently. The fact is, they do.

Ah, but you could say it is a common thing with breeds like that because many owners of such breeds treat them similarly and don't train them. Things like digging for terriers and howling for beagles can be considered instinctive, but this sort of aggression wouldn't be.

It's common because it's a spirited small breed that people don't train properly. Aggression like that isn't innate in Poms, it's a learned behavior. Many just don't react well to being babied. Think about the large protector breeds. Rotties, Shepherds, etc. all have the potential to be aggressive, but most of the time it has to be taught to them to bring it out.

When I picked up my dog as a puppy, the first thing I ever saw her do was terrorize and wail on a pom puppy (even though it was bigger) at 6 weeks old. That's when I knew we were meant for each other.

Maybe it's because my girl is also mixed with Finnish Spitz, but she is an absolute sweetheart. Her only "behavioral problems" stem from her anxiety issues (rescue dog), but it's not even bad. She just takes a while to get comfortable enough to greet new people. Otherwise she is so gentle and loving.
