Sigh. Is it weekday again?

Being optimistic and hopeful can actually be pretty good for someone recovering from a disease or illness. I know I'd be feeling good if I knew my loved ones cared enough about me to pray for me, even if I don't believe in prayer.

I hate how when someone dies. You need to give some weird religious last rites to say goodbye. I would rather have someone get trolled by me when I die. It'll give me a moment of real happiness before my death.

Hospitals should have a disclaimer you sign to get in. It would say that you have given up on the power of prayer and now you need real help. Also when you are cured you are not allowed to praise god.

...and yet doctors routinely prescribe placebos.

Affirming their belief in the healing powers of faith.

I hate to tell you, but your doctor is a quack. Real doctors are not allowed to prescribe placebos.

[–]Roryrooster 0 points1 point ago

If a doctor gives you an antibiotic for Flu or a cold .... that is a placebo. They have no effect on a virus. This is routinely done by doctors and this is well documented.

When surveyed many Doctors also admit to using placebos ...usually vitamins.(also well documented)

Lastly.

The "Placebo effect" is real, it is not quack science .... and it is explicitly a "faith" based effect.

The original OP is factually incorrect . Faith can have a beneficial effect on healing. (obviously this is not "god" fixing things, but that's irrelevant)

[–]Hypertension123456 1 point2 points ago

What doctors are prescribing antibiotics for the flu? I think you might be confusing the virus influenza with haemophilus influenzae, which is actually a bacteria. Or else you don't realize that there are actually anti-viral medications now available.

Here are the actual guidelines, if you are interested : http://www.aafp.org/afp/topicModules/viewTopicModule.htm?topicModuleId=14#3

[–]Roryrooster 0 points1 point ago

The guidelines are fine ... but it is well know that doctors give antibiotics to people with viral infection because that's what people demand . (there are also many instances when people take placebos as part of controlled studies.... and experience real effects)

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/nov/18/antibiotics-cold-placebo

...but you have not addressed the point of my example.

"Faith" can have a measurable benefit to some patents . It is a placebo effect, but a real effect.

This makes the OP factually wrong, or at the very least highly misleading.

The author of that article was suggesting that doctor prescribe a placebo. But this has a host of ethical problems. There is currently no indications for prescribing placebos, and if you find a "doctor" prescribing one, they are a quack. Where are you getting this idea that it is well known that doctors prescribe placebos?
