I'm sorry but Michael Cera can't grow up. It's just wrong. He must remain an awkward teenager for the rest of his life.

[–]bunsicles 4 points5 points ago

What film is that from?

[–]vfxDan 12 points13 points ago

Youth in Revolt. Parts of the film were shot where I work.

[–]Maik3550 24 points25 points ago

Did you survive the shooting? Must have been emotionally damaging experience.

[–]TheBranleur -1 points0 points ago

Some of my friends were talking about it. I heard it was a blast.

[–]bunsicles 1 point2 points ago

Thank you. :)

[–]money_buys_a_jetski 8 points9 points ago

He didn't actually inhale the smoke, that's somewhat awkward for ya.

[–]wingsfan24 17 points18 points ago

Something in his eyes actually reminded me of Gary Sinise.

[–]marca17 2 points3 points ago

apology accepted.

[–]I_cut_my_own_jib 3 points4 points ago

McLovin, I'm sorry that I blocked your cock.

[–]Zythrone 2 points3 points ago

But Michael Cera is already 24...

[–]I_cut_my_own_jib 21 points22 points ago

Yet he always plays the awkward teenager roles.

[–]Dyolf_Knip 0 points1 point ago

At which point he'll switch to being the awkward teenager with progeria.

[–]Darktych -1 points0 points ago

Well... Most kids with Progeria don't last past age 13... I bet you feel like a dick now.

[–]cheapdrinks 2 points3 points ago

It can't be that bad, it starts with pro

[–]Dyolf_Knip 0 points1 point ago

What? No way, Robin Williams' character in Jack managed to get all the way through high school. You think they'd do that? Just go make a movie and tell lies?

[–]Darktych 0 points1 point ago

He didn't have Progeria...

[–]trekbette 0 points1 point ago

He must remain an awkward teenager for the rest of his life.

Pretty sure that's what he is already doing.

[–]Gramma42ton 47 points48 points ago

Spider-man exists, it says so in the comic books.

[–]askyou 4 points5 points ago

... he doesn't? :C

[–]ewo24 13 points14 points ago

he just said he does, dummy

[–]askyou 0 points1 point ago

With clear sarcasm.

[–]knstig 2 points3 points ago

But Dr. Octopus doesn't exist, because only the parts of the comics that I like are true

[–]keeblur 45 points46 points ago

[–]TricksterPriestJace 42 points43 points ago

The bible assumes god exists. It offers no explaination as to why or how there is a god. At least the Greeks had origin stories for Zeus et all.

[–]druckus 15 points16 points ago

I thought it was pretty clear on him being transcendent. He needs no origin story because he never originated. I'm not saying it makes more sense that way. Just that it kinda covers that.

[–]Winterbirds 21 points22 points ago

[–]drirayn 17 points18 points ago

No.

[–]Midget_Hands 34 points35 points ago

Sorry can only see this.

[–]rasputine 6 points7 points ago

[–]wtfover 11 points12 points ago

"The bible doesn't prove the existence of God any more than the Harry Potter books prove the existence of Hogwarts". Not mine, read it somewhere.

The double tap on the table with his left hand is how I always feel in those situations. It pretty much symbolises, 'Yep, time to go.'

[–]AmatureHour 2 points3 points ago

I do not care how many times I see this gif. It is my new favorite.

[–]rushmc1 -3 points-2 points ago

Of course, all the idiots will just think that means "raising the question."

[–]ThankUkarmagain 3 points4 points ago

Fuck Cheerios

[–]SH-5 2 points3 points ago

That argument is beautifully circular

[–]eatthiscake 3 points4 points ago

a perfect circle.

[–]LyricBomber 13 points14 points ago

It's not like you killed someone

It's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side

Praise the one who left you

Broken down and paralyzed

He did it all for you

[–]AngryFloyd 0 points1 point ago

Not really. It just shifts the focus of the argument to the accuracy of the Bible. If the answer to that question is the Bible is authoritative because it says so, then you have a circular argument. it's the same as if you were to say evolution is true because it says so in On The Origin Of Species. Not circular.

[–]SH-5 -1 points0 points ago

Yes, it is circular because that's how the argument runs. The things you are trying to say would make up a different argument.

[–]AngryFloyd 0 points1 point ago

"it's circular because that's how the argument runs" is actually a pretty good example of circular reasoning because you are restating your argument to prove your argument. That, by definition, is circular. However, when someone tries to prove God exists based on the authority of any particular religious text, they are making their argument based on the integrity of the evidence. You can attack the authority of their cited evidence, but you can't say they engaged in circular reasoning because, by definition, they have not.

[–]SH-5 0 points1 point ago

I don't think you understand what a circular argument is. My comment wasn't even an argument. If you say "the bible is true because it says its true" or "god exists because the bible says so" it relies on its own assertion to prove itself, which is circular. Cheers.

[–]AngryFloyd 0 points1 point ago

Sorry, i was messing with you a little, but that was kind of funny. Circular reasoning is a logical fallacy where one argues a conclusion as a premise. Like you say, arguing the Bible is true because the Bible says it is true is circular. However, saying God exists because the Bible says so is an "argument from authority", which is inductive and not circular. It may be false, but it isn't an example of circular reasoning. Like i said, arguing evolution is true because Darwin's book says so is the same "non-circular" argument form. Cheers!

[–]iHeaRTShaRK 3 points4 points ago

gah what movie is this?

[–]silverscreemer 19 points20 points ago

Youth in Revolt. I enjoyed it.

[–]GophaKyorselv 11 points12 points ago

Is that the one where he plays an awkward teenager who does some crazy things to get a girl?

[–]TMobotron 3 points4 points ago

Honestly the main character is typical Cera stuff, but the way he plays his alter-ego "Francois Dillinger" in the movie is what makes the movie great and shows him experimenting a bit outside of his typical boundaries.

Here's the scene the GIF is from, which is awesome: www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYTATEwJ_SA

[–]shhyguuy 0 points1 point ago

ha-ha I get it. :)

Like every other movie he's ever been in.

[–]Nieman -1 points0 points ago

Yep.

[–]iHeaRTShaRK 0 points1 point ago

That's the name. It says he's in touch with his "inner bad ass." Whatever the hell that means.

[–]bouchard -1 points0 points ago

Something like this?

[–]stampeb 1 point2 points ago

Tbh there is no comeback to "how do u know God Exists?". You either believe in Him or you don't. There is no reasoning or explanation behind it.

[–]tezadinho -1 points0 points ago

I guess Shrek exists because Eddie Murphy said so...

[–]tocki 1 point2 points ago

Where i live there's almost no fundamental christian religion, everyone knows its kinda rediculous as far as i know. Most people here just believe there's "something" out there. The only people that really believe the bible are some old people. We do have problems with moslim immigrants some of which are real fundementalists. There's even a movement that wants to bring the sharia to Belgium.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharia4Belgium We also have some hardcore jews (mostly in the city Antwerp) but they dont really harm anyone except for their own children maybe, most of them get a jewish education which isn't right imo.

[–]Non_Causa_Pro_Causa 6 points7 points ago

Sharia4Belgium denounces democracy and calls to reform Belgium into an Islamist state. It promotes sexual intercourse with goats since most of its members are impotents and apparently rejected by most human beings.

Ahh.... wikipedia.

Michael Cera with a Mustaches- Song A Day #1129 But what movie is slmnwise's gif from? The actor is prolific.

[–]Mattycore 1 point2 points ago

Hahaha great clip from a great movie

[–]pigggpennn 0 points1 point ago

If someone says that you should pity them.

[–]LordDerbe 0 points1 point ago

Hey! Its in the bible man, a book that was written when normal people could neither read nor write, when emperors forced their laws and believes onto you, when there was no infrastructure and when there were hardly any scientific researches going on (props to the greeks etc).

Let me travel back in time real quick....oh and gimme a bunch of matches, i wanna establish a fire god named after myself...brb

Harry Potter, Obi Wan, Roland Deschain exists because their books says so.

Pointing to the Bible to prove the existence of God is like pointing to the Lord of the Rings to prove the existence of hobbits.

I believe in God, but not because a book written by a bunch of men says so. Circular logic, folks.

[–]IArgueWithAtheists -5 points-4 points ago

It baffles me that this is a thing.

Can't we just accept that there is a certain group of American Christians that never had a decent education and that they are, by and large, outliers on the world Christianity scene?

[–]jubsie88 9 points10 points ago

Not all of them are uneducated. I was raised by an evangelical Christian mother and an atheist father.. Many of my Christian friends are very well educated, some even went to ivy league schools. They just refuse to accept that the religion they were taught as a child is not backed by any real scientific evidence.

When I was in middle school my mother forced me to attend a "Christian science" conference. Funny, because it was supposed to convince me of the validity of Christianity but it actually made me realize how little basis the religion had in any sort of science or modern thought. Many of my friends agreed with everything we were fed; "the bible says dinosaurs were dragons" "the bible says that the great flood is what caused all of the geographical phenomena that make scientists believe the world is older than it really is" "all scientific evidence is just the devil trying to trick you"

In a sense, that is even more frustrating to me; knowing that these people are smart and capable but refuse to look at real scientific evidence.

[–]cbs5090 2 points3 points ago

Serious question. I've been married 8 years and have 2 kids under the age of 3. I an an atheist and my wife is an fundamentalist. She's very very smart but refuses to look at any evidence because she says she doesn't need to. The Bible says it is this way so she believes it. My question is, how did your parents get along? Did your Dad go to church to appease your Mom? Did they ever discusses their faith with each other? Did your Dad lie to you when you were young and tell you he believed in good God? I'm very curious how it was growing up in your house because it doesn't happen like that very often and I am going to be getting into that territory very soon. Thanks for any info you have.

Edit. Typed on phone. Not fixing errors.

[–]jubsie88 2 points3 points ago

My parents are very much in love, despite their differences in belief. My mother always said that the Lord wouldn't approve of an "unequally yolked marriage" but they were married before she converted, so she stayed committed to him (even though I think her religion is a crock of shit, I respect her for dealing with the situation with true compassion and love). When my brother and I were younger (he is 4 years older than I) my dad went to church on holidays just to appease my mother, but she never expected any more from him.

Unfortunately my dad always let my mom have her way, so my brother and I were raised Christian. He never really stated his indifference until we were older. Although he encouraged us to think for ourselves, we had a very strong influence of the Nazarene church in our lives. It wasn't until I reached about 8th grade that I had a real talk with my father about his beliefs... and honestly I wish we had had it earlier. I never realized that atheism was an option.

My mother was very disappointed that I chose to leave the faith, but I am very thankful that I had both influences in my life. I was lucky enough to experience life from both angles- that of faith, and that of science- and I chose my own path. Not many children raised in the church have the option of choosing a different path without disowning their families, which is a true shame. If my parents had forced me to chose one or the other I probably would have just remained in limbo.

[–]sardonicallyirrev 1 point2 points ago

Your story is unique. I have seen individuals who come from homes where one parent has strong religious beliefs while the other may be indifferent. Atheist was not a word the non-religious individual used. I admire that your parents were able to keep a strong marriage, and I respect that your father let her teach you and your brother about religion. Religion comes with unique experiences, and if one is not going to believe in a higher power and a corresponding religion, then it must be nice to know what you are opting out of.

[–]jubsie88 0 points1 point ago

Thank you sir! I was lucky enough to come from a loving home with no serious hatred between religions. I have family members that are Buddhist, some whom are Jewish (from my father's side) and my mother was actually raised catholic so I have even attended Mass several times.

I love that I can understand many different religions and philosophies; I feel that it makes me more open minded, and I encourage others to inform themselves on these subjects as well. If you only know your own beliefs (whether it be atheism or anything else) you will seem just as ignorant and as a close-minded religious bigot when attempting to defend yourself.

[–]cbs5090 0 points1 point ago

Thank you for your response. No clue why someone would downvote you though. Odd.

[–]jubsie88 1 point2 points ago

Hatred. Which makes me very sad.

Also, I realized I never clearly answered the question about my parents discussing their faith. My mom did (which is why I was raised christian) but my dad never really said anything until I was older. When I was around 11 or 12 I was in church and my youth pastor said my dad was going to hell because he didn't believe in god. When I was going to sleep that night I couldn't stop crying, and my dad finally told me what he believed. That was the first time he had ever approached the subject. I still remember what he said... it was something along the lines of; "Julie, there are many people that will try to tell you what is true in life, but really they can only speak for themselves. Your pastor said those things because he believes them to be true, but I believe something different. I believe something that my own experience and knowledge has taught me." I never understood it until I was older.

[–]cbs5090 1 point2 points ago

It's kinda funny you mention not bring able to stop crying. I just read "The God Delusion" and Dawkins talks about how being brought up in religion is a form of child abuse for that exact reason. He recalls a girl telling a story of a preacher telling her that her best friend, who died, went to hell because of some wrong she did. The girl who Dawkins was talking about was sexually abused and the girl said the hell comment was much worse than the sexual abuse.

[–]kent_eh 14 points15 points ago

No, not when they elect politicians from that same demographic, who then have authority over the rest of us.

[–]Aavagadrro 0 points1 point ago

Being ignorant of science and factual history doesnt preclude a decent education. Its not an entire education, but they can function in society despite retaining the bullshit with which they were indoctrinated.

Having people such as that in government, who are largely ignorant of science is not exactly an outlier. The vast majority of people in the US are ignorant of simple science. How electricity is made, how a computer, radio or cell phone works, how the car or bus they ride in works. They are completely clueless, yet they are everywhere and they dont give a shit how it works, as long as it does.

That is most people here, not just christians, but everyone. Some people are technical and thus educated in how it works, they end up learning that the woo mysticism is bullshit, whereas those who dont care outnumber them and still believe the bullshit they were fed.

[–]bouchard -1 points0 points ago

[–]SteenRasmussen -2 points-1 points ago

Where in the Star Trek does it say Capt. Kirk exists?

Condescending mustache? Smoking inside? Flipping over the cereal bowl for no particular reason? A white belt on white pants? So you're a complete douche when people say this to you?

[–]nontamopiu -1 points0 points ago

I feel like Michael Cera will grow into a very handsome actor one day. But he'll be playing characters in their mid-twenties when he's fifty.

[–]toggafreggin -3 points-2 points ago

that's my face when preschoolers claim there is no god, and then bash people for saying there is a god
