It's like being 16 all over again. You actually want to go out and drive--because it's actually FUN.

[–]couggrl 2 points3 points ago

It's always important to know how to properly work a stick. They're even better if they're big and black, I promise.

I taught my friend's boyfriend how to work a stick. She and I are still quite amused, but I'll let anyone touch my stick.

[–]ChromeSkull 2 points3 points ago

Lol, you've clearly not tried a short shifter. Just slamming it in gear of a tight box.... Just, so, so awesome.

Hmm, I might have to.

[–]I_Fuck_Rabid_Cows -1 points0 points ago

Cue rimshot.

[–]CalicoBlue 22 points23 points ago

I always try to find the clutch and end up flailing my left foot about.

[–]OuttyS4 17 points18 points ago

better than jamming on the brake, like I have done many times.

[–]Funkenwagnels 2 points3 points ago

this is never fun. and surprisingly painful

[–]wookiepedia 0 points1 point ago

EVERY time I end up driving an automatic (usually a rental) this happens. Goddamn wide brake pedals. As SOON as my foot is off the gas (and it wouldn't be useful to leave the car in gear) my left foot goes hunting for the clutch and snicks the far edge of the brake pedal. Makes me look like I have no idea how to drive.

[–]Scud000 0 points1 point ago

The clutch foot is not your brake foot, the gas foot is for brakes so you can alternate between gas and braking.

[–]sleeplessone 3 points4 points ago

Clutch foot keeps looking for the pedal until it finds the brake.

[–]Hoobleton 2 points3 points ago

This is true, but if your brain is set to "press leftmost pedal with your left foot when you're about to change gear" you're still going to hit the brake.

[–]RossLH -1 points0 points ago

Says he who has never autocrossed or rallycrossed. Left foot braking is essential.

Also, the brake pedal is often a lot wider in automatic cars. My left foot has caught the brake pedal while looking for the clutch on more than one occasion.

[–]monsda 5 points6 points ago

After a week with a rental car, I got into my car and tried to put it in reverse....without using the clutch.

[–]optimistic-taco 0 points1 point ago

oh no not the grinds shudders

[–]ElDemo 4 points5 points ago

Yeah, left foot kicks and right hand grasping in the void.

[–]beansmcgavin 8 points9 points ago

haha I just recently had this problem, that and I cant stop turning my damn car off before putting it into park. shit.

[–]Sagerian 8 points9 points ago

I often find my hand resting on the gearstick when i drive an automatic...

[–]WilliamKings 4 points5 points ago

True story. I used to drive stick. Living in Sao Paulo, i took over 1h to get to work. So I taught my self to play the harmonica...

3 years later, I bouht an automatic... I'm 3 months into playing a transversal flute. 2h a day practice!! I'm pretty happy with my progress.

Plus, when girlfriend is in the car, I have one free hand!

Viva automatico!!

[–]Uppercut58 17 points18 points ago

Manual vs. automatic is the different between driving a car and steering one.

[–]jwoodsutk 8 points9 points ago

How do you know if someone drives stick?

They'll tell you

[–]The_Mighty_Spork 7 points8 points ago

I had never driven an auto after years of manual driving when I drove my parents car home one night. Kept going for both the non existent clutch as well as the gear change out of habit. Other big issue was I didn't realise an auto will ease itself off the line so was doing some rather aggressive take offs.

All in all automatics freaking suck, just don't feel in enough control of the car when it's controlling so much on it's own.

[–]Jigoogly 1 point2 points ago

Wel silly you text smoke and drink!

[–]Loki240SX 2 points3 points ago

Same thing happens with my left leg. I'll kick the firewall almost every time before shifting into D.

[–]fap-the-potato 2 points3 points ago

i continually hammer my left foot down on the floor thinking i'll find the clutch.....quite jarring.

[–]TheKeggles 2 points3 points ago

Is it just in the uk that driving a manual car is the standard? We learn in them (some people opt to learn autos but have to retake the test for a manual).

They're tons more fun to drive, cheaper to fix and a bit more economical... Well... Not how I drive it isn't but still.

[–]nodefect 1 point2 points ago

No, it's just about everywhere except in the US.

[–]Grueling 1 point2 points ago

In Denmark, by law you can't take your drivers license in an automatic, you have to do it in a manual.

[–]Hoobleton 0 points1 point ago

In the UK if you test in an auto your license only permits you to drive in one. You have to retest in a manual if you want one.

[–]SashaTheBOLD 1 point2 points ago

Apparently, I'm the only one who keeps trying to pop it into neutral when I'm approaching a red light.

Incidentally, I had an older friend from work take his car to a mechanic. The snot-nosed receptionist asked him "is the transmission standard or manual?" Apparently, the word "standard" has changed its meaning and nobody bothered to tell me.

[–]chillale66 0 points1 point ago

Uh that snot-nosed receptionist is what we call a "stupid bitch", I guaruntee you she meant to say auto or manual?, or standard or auto?, standard and manual are one in the same, always have been, always will be.

[–]Pony_Stanza 1 point2 points ago

Take up smoking.

[–]tartfacepowers 4 points5 points ago

I stomped on the brake thinking clutch. I got a weird look from the cop across the street.

[–]DIBO73 0 points1 point ago

I got rid of my truck a few years ago but i still find myself trying to step on the parking break when shutting down any vehicle, and reaching under the dash to release it before i take off. My new car is a manual and i still keep looking for it in the wrong place.

[–]saysomethingdumb 1 point2 points ago

Just hover it over the handbrake and caress it.

[–]Uppercut58 1 point2 points ago

I don't know what to do with my feet. I keep searching for the clutch.

[–]marsasagirl 1 point2 points ago

Protip: Keep them on the steering wheel and not in your pants, fondling your balls.

[–]SirShiatlord 0 points1 point ago

Keep your hands on the wheel.

[–]santacruzhashman 0 points1 point ago

Try keeping both hands on the wheel.

[–]kanooka 0 points1 point ago

I've been driving an automatic now for a year, and EVERY TIME i get in the car I still slam my left foot down where the clutch should be.

[–]pjdraud 1 point2 points ago

Every time I sit in an automatic and go to start it... "Isn't there something I need to be doing here?"

[–]RebelliousLens 1 point2 points ago

Where's the clutch!? How do I start this?

[–]Dietdrbeer 1 point2 points ago

I always accidentally stomp on the brake thinking it's the clutch

[–]captainjv 1 point2 points ago

You don't drive an automatic, you steer one.

[–]dizzykitty 0 points1 point ago

I learned how to drive on a stick. When I was 16, I took my aunts auto car to get an oil change. When it was time to drive away, I held my foot on the break like a clutch while giving it a little gas. Everyone stared until i finally realized my mistake.

[–]lizmurray[!] 0 points1 point ago

This is on the tv right now, and I shit you not, I clicked the link while this scene was playing.

[–]roofied_elephant 0 points1 point ago

I once had a loaner automatic for a day and was giving a friend a lift. He looked at me a bit weird as I stomped on the brake pedal with my left foot before starting the car...

[–]djkrugger 0 points1 point ago

You can have music lessons, read a novel, babysit an some other fun stuff.

[–]tigerjane 0 points1 point ago

I learned how to drive on a manual and have been driving a manual ever since. I have only driven an automatic maybe 5 times total and that is exactly how I feel with my hands and my feet. To be honest, I cried when my dad told me that my first car would be a truck that was a stick. But now I am soo glad that he took the time to teach me.

[–]yonthickie 0 points1 point ago

I end up not going anywhere and waving my limbs randomly like my car is suddenly full of bees.

[–]aenaarion 0 points1 point ago

If you don't know what to do with your hands while driving, you're gonna have a bad time!

[–]geoemyda_spengleri 0 points1 point ago

I went from driving a manual American car to a British automatic...I am so confused. The window buttons moved to the center console, the hand brake is against the door, the seat adjustment buttons are on the door...and I keep trying to find the clutch before I start the car. Oh, and the wipers go the opposite direction, which is oddly disorienting.

[–]kazu-sama 0 points1 point ago

Besides not knowing what to do with my hands, I always go to push a clutch petal that isn't there...

[–]MTGandP 0 points1 point ago

Steering wheel.

[–]Zettelmeier 1 point2 points ago

REPOST YOU ASSHOLE.

[–]Rubeko 0 points1 point ago

Happens to me when i drive my friends car

[–]chuhai 0 points1 point ago

That and I kind of freak out when the car juts forward when I take my foot off of the brake.

[–]The-schnarg -1 points0 points ago

God damn repost.

[–]downtonil8 0 points1 point ago

Had to borrow my moms car to work last week, she has an automatic, and since I've been driving stick for about a year now, all I can say was I thought the parking break was the clutch, and I did not get very far.
