Wow! That brings back so many memories! I had totally forgotten about that toy!

[–]krazyski[S] 2 points3 points ago

I know right! Loved playing with this! Never knew how it worked but it was great!

[–]Eslader 2 points3 points ago

Same here. Damn. It could play real record too, now that I remember it.

[–]polar0ids 2 points3 points ago

nope! the arm had tines like a music box does, and the records had little ridges that would trigger the tines as it spun.

[–]Eslader 2 points3 points ago

Ahh you're right. I was mixing this one up with the other Fisher Price one I had that did play real records.

x-post to /r/vinyl and tell them you're thinking of installing an MC cartridge.

I know I had one. Can't remember what the records played exactly. I think they were just simple tunes like "Twinkle/ABC" and "Old MacDonald". Cool idea. Shows you how phonographs work in a term a kid can understand. It's probably how I came to understand the tech behind the music.

I was given one for Christmas...I loved it, and then it was passed down to first and second cousins children until I had children of my own, and then it came home. It was a magical box, and I love it still!!! My records played; Eidelweiss, Camptown Races, Humpty Dumpty, Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. Their is a mechanism in the arm that is similar to a music box, in that the bumps in the grooves turn a key and produce the note. Nime still works, although the movement has slowed down considerably due to age. And the plastic of the box and the records could probably survive a nuclear blast.

Amazing!! I wish I still had mine!

I didn't have one but my friends did. One of the records was "How Much is That Doggie in the Window". I had never heard that song before then.

[–]BlueBird518late 90s 3 points4 points ago

YES! I miss that thing :P I have a real record player now. Childhood does influence us.

[–]bananatron 2 points3 points ago

I thought this was pure magic as a child/adolescent. I remember looking at the discs which just had a few bumps in them here and there and being fascinated that it made sound. I believe it worked like a normal record payer if I remember right?

[–]Moonj64 5 points6 points ago

Actually it works more like a music box or a player piano. A regular record player has a needle which vibrates from the bumps in the record, this had several gears that would catch on the various grooves on the record and when the gears spun they would play the corresponding note.

[–]librarianzrocklate 70s 2 points3 points ago

Yes, that exact one. Each color was a different kids song, but I can't remember which was which. I was fascinated by the bumps! How do these make sound!!!

[–]shyguy528 2 points3 points ago

I used to shove pennies into that thing, thinking it was some sort of piggy bank.

I also did that to every CD drive I could find, which probably hastened the death of our Sega-CD :U

[–]perixe 0 points1 point ago

thats so cute I hate it. :/

[–]rawrimkat1017 2 points3 points ago

I used to walk down the street with my baby stroller with that record player playing the music with my blanket. I was boss.

[–]krazyski[S] 0 points1 point ago

That's awesome!

[–]theycallmeheisenberg 2 points3 points ago

i used to pretend to be a dj on this! hahaha

[–]Wanderer89 2 points3 points ago

Holy shit yes, grandma's toy box I had totally forgotten about you!

[–]WhaIDontEven 2 points3 points ago

Now have a listen!

[–]silver_soul 2 points3 points ago

I still have one! My kids play with it now. My son's friend called it a CD player.

[–]trampus1early 80s 2 points3 points ago

Nope, I hads this BAMF right here. My favorite record was my Cabbage Patch Kids Christmas album, also pretty much the only record I ever had.

[–]i12burs 1 point2 points ago

My partner and I have just applied to be foster parents, I asked my mom to bring up some of my old toys from when I was little... and this was one of them... also another little record player that plays 45s (I think that's what they're called) all disney records in there.

[–]hypnotizedtodd 1 point2 points ago

That does bring back memories.... :)

[–]Audiophile_is_Lifelate 80s 1 point2 points ago

I still have the records but idk if the player is still around. I miss this as well.

[–]ragglemaple 1 point2 points ago

I had this too!!! They actually still sell this as a fisher-price retro product, it was a really popular christmas present last year!

[–]mommykaraoke 1 point2 points ago

Thanks! Must find one for my wee one. Brings back good childhood memories.

[–]achancesw 1 point2 points ago

[–]schroob 1 point2 points ago

[–]learning2lovemyself 1 point2 points ago

[–]rikkirachelearly 90s 1 point2 points ago

Wowza, flashback to my babysitter's house, she totally had one of these and I LOVED it.

[–]sunny_person 1 point2 points ago

I remember one of the records played Eidel Weiss, from the sound of Music.. my mom used to play it all the time because it was her favorite song.

[–]snowball17 1 point2 points ago

I still have one of these kicking around my storage room somewhere. In related news, I might be a hoarder.

[–]vixxn845 1 point2 points ago

Hell to the yeah. I had completely forgotten about it, though.

[–]Chadsymptom 1 point2 points ago

I grew up listening to these every night. It was a hand-me-down from my older cousin.

[–]artgeek17 1 point2 points ago

Man... I don't think I ever had one, but that looks so darn familiar!

[–]darksunshaman 1 point2 points ago

I loved this thing when I was lil

[–]Udunno13 1 point2 points ago

Did anyone else lift up the tone arm and play with the little tines there just to hear the random tones go off?!

[–]polar0ids 1 point2 points ago

"have", no, but TOTALLY "had".

[–]marceline407 1 point2 points ago

OMG! NOSTALGIA-GASM. I haven't even clicked the link yet. I just saw the thumb and I can already hear it.

[–]natefoo 1 point2 points ago

The one I played with as a kid is still at my parents house. My kid loves it. The plastic on those old Fisher Price toys was indestructible, it makes you wonder how many barrels of oil went in to each one. ;)

[–]ogami1972 1 point2 points ago

lol...still do...it wrapped up in shrinkwrap in my storeroom...only have the blue and the purple disc though :(

[–]GetItTogether 0 points1 point ago

It's still in my closet I think :D

Used that thing ALL THE TIME

[–]myfajahas400children 1 point2 points ago

Shit, I was only born in '96, but I had one of these. So this is what nostalgia feels like.
