Well, his allergic reaction is an itch.

[–]P10_WRC 22 points23 points ago

and a small red bump

[–]BrownNote87 6 points7 points ago

I have an allergy as well. I do get red bumps that itch like everyone else, but I also swell up like a balloon (tennis ball sized lumps) where ever I am bit.

[–]kaylakaylakayla 1 point2 points ago

Technically, every-one has an allergy to mosquito bites. That's why they itch at all in the first place.

You're just more severely allergic to being bitten

[–]BrownNote87 1 point2 points ago

This is correct. Some individual's responses were mocking the OP for saying that he was allergic to them. I just wanted to point out that his assertions was not ridiculous and that some people have is worse than others.

[–]MicrowaveSpace 0 points1 point ago

I think I may not be allergic to them!! I used to get itchy bumps from mosquito bites, but not for the past 7+ years. I've even recently watched Mosquitos land on me and refrained from killing them until I was sure they had sufficient time to bite me/suck my blood... No itchiness or bumps at all. Perhaps I've developed an immunity?

[–]FearTheCron 0 points1 point ago

I get worse reactions than most people. I am all for the final extermination of these things, terrible creatures. I just wish the mosquito laser patent belonged to someone who would actually utilize it rather than the patent trolls Intellectual Ventures.

[–]BrownNote87 2 points3 points ago

I am from Florida where mosquitoes plague us year round. We have a truck service that drives through all of the subdivisions in my city sprays the air with a pesticide. We also have campaigns that inform people to dump out buckets/pots/anything that collect's water after rain storms so the mosquitoes can not spawn their larva.

I wish we had a laser though :(

[–]plopliar 1 point2 points ago

[–]FreshGreg 4 points5 points ago

I hope, that foot belongs to an individual that's carrying a virus that will spread throughout the mosquito world, and finish them once and for all.

Mosquitocanceraids

[–]cottonheadedninnymug 1 point2 points ago

Before that, they'll bite more people and spread the disease.

[–]waspsmacker 1 point2 points ago

That's the beauty of it. Humans are immune to Mosquitocanceraids, but mosquitoes catch a form of cancer and aids that kills them off.

[–]CajunTurkey 18 points19 points ago

Serious question: If you were to immerse yourself in a cloud of mosquitoes and let them bite you, would you die first from the blood loss, mosquito-born diseases, or from the inflammation? Any entomologists want to chime in here?

[–]Shinobus_Smile 33 points34 points ago

no entomologist but i think you will die from your own immune response (inflammation) well before you die from blood loss. Also you are assume they have diseases which may not be the case and if they do; death could possibly come from your immune response to the viral/bacterial load (giggidy).

[–]hafetysazard 7 points8 points ago

I do not get any inflammation from mosquito bites. They do not bother me. I am from Northwestern Ontario, so lots of bugs have always bitten me. This past week, my German friends were visiting and getting bitten on our camping trip. One guy in particular had hive looking spots all over him, and a bump on his arm, the size of an egg.

Every time he got bitten, we would scream, "Don't scratch!" but he rarely listened.

[–]coldsands 6 points7 points ago

You are one of the chosen ones. You aren't allergic to the bites.

[–]greiger 1 point2 points ago

I want that super power...

[–]hafetysazard 0 points1 point ago

I think it is possible that anybody can become immune to any particular species of mosquitos' bites.

[–]fruitofzaloom 0 points1 point ago

About 3 years ago I stopped reacting to the majority of mosquito bites. If I get bit in a bad spot, like between my toes, I might get a little welt, but generally mosquitos do not bother me at all anymore.

[–]monkeyjay 3 points4 points ago

"Don't scratch!" but he rarely listened.

Oh, he listened, but if you did react to mosquito bites then you would know that there are not many forces on earth that could stop you from scratching those things.

Of course if you were actually in danger of infection I'm sure you wouldn't scratch, but for a few bites the relief is just too tempting.

[–]hafetysazard 4 points5 points ago

It takes zen like concentration to stop it. However, he did most of the scratching in his sleep which is pretty hard to stop.

[–]lukeatron 2 points3 points ago

I once found myself tromping around some swampland in Michigan and got absolutely assaulted by mosquitoes. My whole body looked like that guys feet as we ran out of their back to the truck. My back got it particularly bad, even through a sweatshirt and T-shirt. It was like one solid mosquito bite with a few dimples here and there where there were a few square millimeters that managed not get bitten. A bit later I developed a fever, was sweating profusely and felt very confused by everything. It passed in a few hours.

So yeah, I could see if you just stayed there getting bitten, you would end up getting pretty sick, possibly enough to kill you. And now I think I might have imagined the worst possible way to die.

[–]lukeatron 1 point2 points ago

So... I was wrong.

[–]inappropriate_rapper[S] 1 point2 points ago

I don't think any person has the mental fortitude to not scratch mosquito bites all over their body, scratching and aggravating the bite and losing blood at an accelerated rate = massive blood loss. Sounds fucking stupid, huh? Maybe this belongs in /r/shittyaskscience

[–]Frost_ 3 points4 points ago

Take this from someone who knows from first hand experience: when you have a 3-digit number of angry, red, itchy insect bites on your person, you're so aware of the risk of the severe infection you might get from scratching them that keeping your hands off is not a problem.

Also, the immune reaction to a bite (by which I mean the swelling, itching and possible redness) tends to lessen as a function of exposure and time - the more you're bitten and the longer your exposure lasts, the less the bites itch, and vice versa.

I'm from Northern Europe and these days only the first few mosquito bites of the summer actually itch in any significant way. That won't necessarily confer any/much benefits against other species of mosquitoes, though. When I've visited other areas I've gotten a bigger reaction at the beginning, and then seen a lessening of the effect the longer I've been in that particular location.

[–]fireuzer 1 point2 points ago

Paul Atreides would like a word with you.

[–]VinnyDelFuego 1 point2 points ago

I'd rather have 100 mosquito bites than 1 poison ivy rash. That shit is hell compared to a mosquito bite.

[–]Gilthanass 4 points5 points ago

Well, you lesser born mortals might, but I happen to be immune from mosquito bites! Ok, they bite me, but I no longer react to them. I think the last time I reacted to a mosquito bite was about 20 years ago (yes, I still get bitten, I go up to my cottage every weekend in the summer). Weirdly enough, my brothers and father are the same way. I don't know if we're freaks of nature, or if that just happens if you're exposed to enough of them, either way though, I'm happy about it.

[–]b0w3n 1 point2 points ago

Your body may not have an allergic response to the saliva. I'm the same way. I get a bump for about 5 minutes and they're gone.

My girlfriend on the other hand, has hers for a week+.

[–]Gilthanass 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, when I was younger I reacted, then I got to the "small itchy bump for a few minutes" and now my body doesn't react at all. No bump, no itchiness, nothing. It's quite nice, mosquitoes are so much less annoying when their bite doesn't itch.

[–]NeddieSeagoon 1 point2 points ago

Same with me. I grew up in northern Queensland, Australia, being bitten constantly by mosquitoes and sandflies. So now I have an immunity to their bites and don't get any reaction. This is not a legitimate superpower, unfortunately - it's apparently fairly common.

[–]kluanelaker 4 points5 points ago

I live in the Yukon Territory in northern Canada were it's not unusual for mosquitoes to kill Caribou. Death is often caused by anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction,) but sometime they are suffocated by the sheer number of mozzys around their nostrils.
I don't know why they don't just breath through their mouths, I just know it happens.

[–]Improvedx 7 points8 points ago

You can't die of blood loss, since the mosquitoes get blood from your blood pressure. Meaning if you lose a lot of blood, they wont get any more blood. They don't drain it.

[–]orost 5 points6 points ago

I think the blood pressure at which you die from blood loss could be higher than the blood pressure at which mosquitoes don't get any more blood.

[–]Sinthemoon 1 point2 points ago

Peripheric vasoconstriction. You'd become pale but probably not be at risk of death. Diseases depend on the geographic region you are not on the number of the mosquitoes biting you. So I'd say no more than usual risk of infection. Also, I'd believe you would need to be allergic to die from mosquito bite-induced inflammation. But it's the one I'm the least sure about so I would guess this is the most likely if any.

[–]crux510 1 point2 points ago

I believe they actually take advantage of capillary action to remove the blood. Have you ever noticed that water will flow up very narrow tubes, especially if it is made of glass?

[–]I_RARELY_RAPE_PEOPLE 2 points3 points ago

Mosquitos don't suck blood. They puncture skin, and let the blood flow to them. Basically they only get blood, if there's enough to come out. You'll never die from blood loss to any swarm size. (I THINK)

And you wouldn't die BAM like that when being bitten, even by a swarm.

So...my money's on the massive reaction to all those bites at once.

[–]BamaFan87 1 point2 points ago

Bullet to the head would be how I would go out at this point. That itching will be the worst torture imaginable.

[–]Smilfink 0 points1 point ago

They say there is a guy in Sweden who sleeps naked outside one night every summer, allowing the mosquitoes to bite him A LOT and after this they say he is immune to the itchy side effect of mosquito bites the rest of the year.

[–]surrealasm_atwork 1 point2 points ago

Up north they tend to suffocate moose more frequently than they suck them dry. Don't think that would happen to us humans but just saying.

[–]Djifi 0 points1 point ago

Ended up sitting outside in the same spot for close to four hours. Some how I woke up in my old house, looking at my arms and hands I had over 500 mosquito bites.
