Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

This is not a real photo. It is a simulation of what it could look like.

The software used, I believe, is called "Starry Nights."

If you look at the bottom-left corner of the picture you can make out a "NE" of a compass in blue. When you are within the software you can configure different scenarios, and then move the camera around to see what it would look like.

TL;DR - Fake

[–]MachineVision 198 points199 points ago

[–]ZalySC 136 points137 points ago

Carl Sagan said it best:

"From this distant vantage point, the Earth might not seem of any particular interest. But for us, it's different. Consider again that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there.

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that in glory and triumph they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner. How frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity – in all this vastness – there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. The Earth is the only world known, so far, to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, the Earth is where we make our stand. It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known."

Wow, it took me way too long to find this comment. But then I realized that r/pics is basically 9gag, where everyone just comments with retarded memes, puns, and horrible horrible jokes instead of something with value.

I'd also like to add to the list of reasons why this picture is fake: Mars is not that red and the sky is more of a grey color.

Example

Example 2

EDIT: Since people are probably disappointed that OP's photo is fake, here are a couple mind-blowing (and, IMO, even more incredible than OP's pic) photos that are completely real and from Mars.

Sunset on Mars

Solar Eclipse of Phobos

[–]hhbenaf 76 points77 points ago

We have color photography from Mars.

I'm sorry, that's not the point of your post (and I agree with you point), but... damn, color photography from Mars. That seems way more important than anything else in this thread.

[–]llamagoelz 43 points44 points ago

i know that feel bro, try this on for size; in a couple weeks we will be getting full HD color video from mars for the first time ever! im fucking psyched to see weather on another planet or even better, just being able to watch the rover move on film (on another planet!).

[–]mcgrillin25 2 points3 points ago

Literally get goosebumps thinking about it. We are gonna see footage of another planet's surface. So insane...

[–]mattjeast 1 point2 points ago

Is there a more concrete date for full HD color video? I was searching for more info, but all I could find was websites stating the ability to capture HD video and a spliced-together video of 200+ low-res images of the landing.

[–]Minored 40 points41 points ago

We also have color photograph from Venus, taken in 1981 from a Russian probe.

http://i.imgur.com/LhFaa.jpg

edit: more info.

[–]Artuir 8 points9 points ago

I only found out about these corrected perspective Venera pictures recently and they have not stopped blowing my mind since.

Such amazing stuff.

[–]hhbenaf 6 points7 points ago

Holy shit, I love humans.

[–]jredbone 16 points17 points ago

Saw the username and waited half an hour for the monster to appear. This is your most dissapointing film yet.

[–]carrotman424 6 points7 points ago

You mean the one at the top. Thanks for the tip.

[–]djnap 30 points31 points ago

I had to scroll all the way down here for that. Reddit I am disappoint

edit: 28 minutes ago, this was about half way down

[–]NoNeedForAName 1 point2 points ago

Upvote revoked.

[–]Aljn 2 points3 points ago

I came here looking for this comment, and a significant part of me is deeply saddened that I found it :(

[–]mvinformant 1 point2 points ago

To the top with you!

[–]KaseyB 74 points75 points ago

I'm confused about the angles involved. how do does Jupiter line up with earth and Venus with a viewline from Mars without the sun being in the way?

[–]EnhancementShaman 217 points218 points ago

something like this (excuse dodgy paint drawing) http://i.imgur.com/bpjB3.jpg

[–]KaseyB 44 points45 points ago

huh. I thought it would be something like that, but I never thought Jupiter would still be so bright on the other side of the solar system.

[–]EnhancementShaman 143 points144 points ago

Its big.

[–]DextrosKnight 52 points53 points ago

bigger than a bread box?

[–]goldenspray 62 points63 points ago

Yes, even bigger than 10 hundred bread boxes.

[–]DextrosKnight 37 points38 points ago

so then it's like the size of a car?

[–]chrisd93 70 points71 points ago

Whoa whoa. Slow down there cowboy...

[–]Italian_Barrel_Roll 11 points12 points ago

An SUV, at least.

[–]4TEHSWARM 5 points6 points ago

The SUV of planets.

[–]Zaydene 7 points8 points ago

Bigger than 10 hundred cars

[–]Rankulus 3 points4 points ago

Not bigger than an elephant.

[–]FBIorange 5 points6 points ago

ah, 20 questions reference

[–]Captainpatch 21 points22 points ago

Jupiter is one of the few objects in the sky that has noticeable heft to the naked eye, rather than just being a pinprick.

You can make out basic features of Jupiter with a really good pair of binoculars, you don't even need a telescope to see that it is striped.

Jupiter is huge.

[–]emarkd 8 points9 points ago

And Jupiter's 4 largest moons are pretty amazing through a decent pair of binoculars.

[–]LukaCola 4 points5 points ago

Mars has no sources of light on the planet, combined with a thin atmosphere anything that gives off light is far far easier to see than it would be on Earth under any conditions.

[–]ShetlandJames 12 points13 points ago

You need a novelty account like ShittyButExplanatoryMSPaintDrawings

[–]Necritica 4 points5 points ago

I was confused for a second myself, then I remembered the way orbits actually worked thanks to your visual representation.

[–]nameeS 4 points5 points ago

I don't think that's how it would have been lined up, because Earth and Venus would have been dark. I think. I'm no cosmetologist.

[–]cumfarts 5 points6 points ago

but where is uranus?

[–]Nithoren 5 points6 points ago

behind you

[–]AcidicAndHostile 2 points3 points ago

It also works if you switch the positions of Mars and Jupiter - in that case from Mars you would be looking across the Solar System past the Sun and toward the more closely grouped Venus, Earth, Jupiter.

[–]AcidicAndHostile 0 points1 point ago

It also works if you switch the positions of Mars and Jupiter - in that case from Mars you would be looking across the Solar System past the Sun and toward the more closely grouped Venus, Earth, Jupiter.

[–]fuzzysarge 5 points6 points ago

Syzygy.

Great word to use when playing hangman.

[–]cunt_stamp 3 points4 points ago

[–]monoatheist 2 points3 points ago

The same way Venus and Jupiter line up every night and morning here on earth

[–]ChromeBoom 2 points3 points ago

Not everynight

[–]monoatheist 2 points3 points ago

You're right, I guess I should have said lately.

[–]puckets 0 points1 point ago

Well, planets are actually always "aligned" with each other, they just appear to be far apart. The planets (excluding pluto) rotate around the sun in a disk, much like the rings of saturn, or the milky way. So it isn't surprising at all that at some point, the sun will be out of the way (either it just set, or is just about to rise) and you can see the planets that follow the sun closely (venus is called the evening and morning star for this reason, it follows the sun closely) right "next" to Jupiter or any other planet.

[–]jerfmuffay 26 points27 points ago

very cool photoshop. But this is a fake, jupiter is on the other side of the sun and the planets are a LOT farther apart right now than that

[–]wayoutpro 2 points3 points ago

[–]Sub-cidal 0 points1 point ago

I thought it was a 7 minute delay, Hence the 7 minutes of terror.

[–]wanderso24 25 points26 points ago

14 min delay but it took 7 minutes to land.

[–]DierdraVaal 11 points12 points ago

it's 7 minutes of terror because it takes about 7 minutes to land, so when the first signal of the start of the landing procedure (14 minutes delayed) reaches earth, the lander has already been on the surface (one way or another) for 7 minutes.

[–]Davada 2 points3 points ago

14 minutes for a signal to get from here to mars and vise versa, 7 minutes was the fall from atmosphere to ground.

[–]Farmerj0hn 78 points79 points ago

Amazing to think I'm a tiny prick. wait...

[–]StickiestFingers 5 points6 points ago

Fake photos are fake.

[–]obievil 4 points5 points ago

Sadly This is photoshop http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/2012/08/10/an-unreal-mars-skyline/

I wanted this to be real so badly

[–]tnaro 82 points83 points ago

Are those 4 planets really that aligned at the moment? I'm impressed, 4 more to release the titans.

[–]polyethylene108 69 points70 points ago

This photo is at least two years old. So no, is the answer to that.

[–]JorgeCS 7 points8 points ago

Also, it's fake.

[–]Kremecakes 2 points3 points ago

But... (S)He's still on Earth... and upvoting... Right? So... yes?

[–]Popedizzle 172 points173 points ago

I grew up with nine planets, so I find your math off.

[–]Overeacting 43 points44 points ago

Did you know there are also 5 oceans now?

[–]richandwhite 16 points17 points ago

Woah, and here I thought we were done discovering things like new continents and oceans. Where'd they find this one?

[–]DierdraVaal 11 points12 points ago

I'm sure there's a "yo momma" joke in here somewhere.

[–]mightycow 2 points3 points ago

Yo mama so fat and lumpy there's ongoing debate in the astronomy community as to whether she should be classified as a planet or planetoid.

[–]krucz36 6 points7 points ago

You mama so sweaty, they found a new ocean on her

[–]heroonebob 28 points29 points ago

wat

[–]OutInTheBlack 9 points10 points ago

Southern ocean, everything south of 60 degrees surrounding Antarctica. It's disputed, though.

[–]stop_drop_rofl 2 points3 points ago

Atlantic, pacific, Indian, arctic, and now this fucking 'southern' ocean?!

[–]apteryx_274 3 points4 points ago

to be fair, its a silly place where the Japanese hunt whales, and where circumpolar currents will smash you to bits if you make the mistake of swimming in it.

[–]Jumin 2 points3 points ago

Wait, how many did we have before? 4? We gained an ocean?

[–]stferago 6 points7 points ago

Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic, and (new) Southern Ocean.

[–]heroonebob 2 points3 points ago

wat

[–]tnaro 59 points60 points ago

Me too, just wanted to adapt to science :(

[–]SlobKnobJobJob 48 points49 points ago

I miss Pluto...

[–]tnaro 36 points37 points ago

We all do

[–]UseThe4s 36 points37 points ago

He was a good dog.

[–]brandalini 1 point2 points ago

It was my favourite planet :(

[–]NonSequiturEdit 23 points24 points ago

Dude, Pluto's not even the largest of the Kuiper belt objects. Time to move on, man.

[–]Cheesusaur 8 points9 points ago

That picture is OLD. "Xena" is Eris, and "Gabrielle" is Dysnomia. It also isn't a Kuiper Belt object, it's part of the scattered disk, which is further out. It's also unknown if it actually is bigger than Pluto, most projections put them as the same size. Also, 2003 EL61 has a name now, Haumau. And 2005 FY9 is Make Make. There's also a couple others of note, but I can't be bothered to go into them.

[–]big_onion 3 points4 points ago

I still haven't forgiven them for Pluto.

[–]Crumpetbutt 5 points6 points ago

Me too, living in the town where Pluto was discovered we still all secretly agree that it's a planet.

[–]A_Polite_Noise 16 points17 points ago

No, you grew up with 8 planets and one mis-labeled Kuiper Belt object =P I am constantly defending the de-planeting of Pluto because back in 7th grade I did a report on the Kuiper Belt and it seemed to be accepted knowledge amongst astronomers that Pluto wasn't really a planet but was something more to do w/ the Oort Cloud and Kuiper Belt and all that jazz. Years later Neil Degrasse Tyson did what he did at the Hayden Planetarium of the Natural History Museum in NYC and some reporter noticed and suddenly it was public knowledge as if that was the moment Pluto was demoted, but like the Brooklyn hipster I am, I knew it before! I actually found that old report: I did it in size 22 Courier, for some goddamn reason...

[–]L337_n00b 2 points3 points ago

Well, props to you for at least not using Comic Sans.

[–]I3gumbyI3 7 points8 points ago

Cosmic Sans

[–]dalthughes 7 points8 points ago

YOURE RUINING MY CHILDHOOD.

[–]A_Polite_Noise 4 points5 points ago

No no, it's AWESOME. See, instead of being the farthest, smallest planet, Pluto is now the most famous Kuiper Belt object, and is like an ambassador to the furthest reaches of our solar system, like a scout who spends most of their time in the wilderness, solitary but pleased and at home amongst the uncivilized but capable denizens of nature, who occasionally comes towards bigger settlements to bring news of what goes on in the dark woods beyond. Pluto is like pre-Fellowship Aragorn.

[–]squigglycircle 2 points3 points ago

Size 22 Courier will do that to you.

[–]e30fern 5 points6 points ago

Most planets, except Pluto, which technically isn't a planet, follow the same path within 5 degrees of the same plane. Therefore, if you were to spread out the planets on their orbits so they all appear in our sky, you could connect them fairly easily and it would appear to be the same path. They follow a similar path that the sun follows, called the "ecliptic".

[–]bfogarty27 11 points12 points ago

no, everyone is just posting stuff from the other rovers since it's easy karma

[–]RzK 14 points15 points ago

I live on Earth!

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

hey, me too. :D

[–]Ottershaw 3 points4 points ago

[–]Mr_Quagmire 8 points9 points ago

Anyone know if there's a higher res version available? My quick search turned up nothing.

[–]scruffy01 12 points13 points ago

Isn't how the hell is Jupiter on the same side of Mars as Earth/Venus?

I guess it could happen but would have to be some weird ass alignment timing.

[–]RobinPerris 32 points33 points ago

Something like this?

http://i.imgur.com/lY4iu.png

[–]EnhancementShaman 40 points41 points ago

something like this (excuse dodgy paint drawing) http://i.imgur.com/bpjB3.jpg

[–]scruffy01 9 points10 points ago

Actually thanks for that. I couldn't make a clear mental image of how it would work though I figured it was possible, just unlikely.

[–]WMDistraction 1 point2 points ago

Have you used NASA's online application? I can't remember what it's called, but it is a real-time simulation of the Solar System and nearby stars. It's trippy as hell to play around with and get a true understanding of how objects move in our Solar System.

[–]i_shoot_rice_bullets 4 points5 points ago

I am guessing it is called "Eyes on the Solar System"?

http://eyes.nasa.gov/

[–]snowfencer 24 points25 points ago

As far as cool things I have seen on reddit today, this tops it. Space is fucking awesome!

[–]analrapistaccountant 23 points24 points ago

[–]AGAR_PLATE 1 point2 points ago

Beware the aligning of the planets!

[–]AcidicAndHostile 2 points3 points ago

I love this. It's so cool to see parts of the Solar System from different viewpoints.

Possibly my favourite is viewing Earth as a speck (pixel) of light through Saturn's rings in the Pale Blue Dot photograph.

[–]RAAIINN 2 points3 points ago

Are there clouds on Mars?

[–]dannyboi965 0 points1 point ago

Dah dah, dah, dah dah daaaaaah duh, dah dah DAH, DAHDAHDAHAAAAAAAAAAAAA

[–]miurabull 0 points1 point ago

wtf who took these pictures? source?

[–]onetimetyler 0 points1 point ago

That's an absolutely beautiful pure planet... let's move there and turn it into a dump.

[–]bassman2112 1 point2 points ago

All this picture needs now is Luke walking away after his Uncle's farm got decimated.

[–]kinneroth 0 points1 point ago

Every image of Mars before this point has gone over my head. All of the old pictures have never done it for me.

This is the first one to truly floor me. To look up, in vibrant color, and see the skyline from another planet is breathtaking, to say the least. It's so profound that we've found our way from one planet to another.

Fuck yeah, Science.

[–]treay61 1 point2 points ago

stop posting fake Curiosity photos ... go here for the real ones http://www.nasaimages.org/

[–]Wazowski 4 points5 points ago

Today at the top of reddit: Some CGI image that everyone upvoted because they assumed it was from Curiosity.

*golf clap*

Good job, morons.

[–]superatheist95 2 points3 points ago

all i could really say was "thats really fucking cool".

[–]logosfabula 2 points3 points ago

[–]oOfirestrykeOo 3 points4 points ago

The planets are aligning!

[–]Overeacting 4 points5 points ago

Is there a higher resolution version of this picture?

[–]yatpay 11 points12 points ago

You can view the raw images here: http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msl/multimedia/raw/

This image was not taken by Curiosity though.

[–]downvotemaster 1 point2 points ago

terribly fake. Reddit is so easy to dupe

[–]Husty 3 points4 points ago

Out of "Curiosity" who took that picture?

[–]Magikarparparp -1 points0 points ago

You are looking at the place where everything that has ever happened to you took place. Every person you know was born on that tiny dot, and almost all of them will die there. We are very small.

[–]achshar 3 points4 points ago

Yes, i have seen that Sagan video too.

[–]xilpaxim 3 points4 points ago

Actually it's fake.

[–]ellipses1 0 points1 point ago

How fucking awesome is it that only "almost" all of them will die there?

[–]BigTuna2010 0 points1 point ago

this i the coolest picture i have ever seen

[–]yatpay 1 point2 points ago

What took this image? I would guess Opportunity based on the landscape but I can't find anything confirming this..

[–]wheatacres 0 points1 point ago

I had a dream last night that Mars, Venus and Saturn were next to each other in the sky. They were as large as the moon, and Mars was like a mirror reflecting Australia. (I guess the dream was set in Australia.)

[–]HoistTheGrog -1 points0 points ago

I can explain this.......ALIENS.

[–]stferago 1 point2 points ago

We need a subreddit dedicated to pics from Curiosity. I would be all over that shit.

[–]Gartiksag 0 points1 point ago
