"Generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission.

Ahh yes, one of the more trickier parts to building a PC. I had the same problem when it came to increasing my GPU. I decided to go with the i5-2500k for overclocking potential but it was too big to fit in the processor slot of the graphics card. With a hammer and chisel I carefully hacked away at the edges until is was a near perfect size. It fit fine with a bit of celotape but it didn't work. I have a feeling that I may have short circuited the MoBo with a static shock.

[–]Waive 156 points157 points ago

I almost did the same thing, but when I was installing more RAM on my computer (couldn't download more because my internet is shitty). The RAM square board wouldn't fit in, to I cut off a little bit of the RAM so the pin would enter in the right place, after that I just washed the old ones to use them again if I needed. Now both don't work and I'm a little scared because it may be a virus plese help

[–]DontClickItsMeatspin 78 points79 points ago

These are seriously two of the most painful comments I have ever read...

[–]ineedateam1 1 point2 points ago

I'v read worse

[–]Stompedyourhousewith 36 points37 points ago

i ran out of thermal paste when seating my cpu, so i used peanut butter cause it was the same consistency. I don't know why it won't work, and geek squad wont return my calls.

[–]encaseme 27 points28 points ago

Actually true story: I found a computer case while dumpster-diving at the computer-science building back in college. It appeared OK aside from some dents from being thrown in the trash, and it was heavy like it had everything in it, so I lugged it back home. Sure enough it wouldn't work right, it'd post but reset constantly. I pulled the heatsink off and... there was a (crispy, toasted) price sticker on top of the CPU die... Removed it and the adhesive residue, added a little thermal paste, and it was good to go. Gave the computer to my sister because she didn't have a good one.

[–]lawlhalla 1 point2 points ago

Apparantly also cheese is better than a bad thermal paste brand. Doesn't last long though.

[–]Afirejar 2 points3 points ago

Here's a fun story I read a few years ago: Some kid brought his computer to a shop because it didn't turn on. The tech immediately notices that it smells strangely like French fries. He opens the case and finds it completely filled with solid fat.

The customer later admitted to having read about suspending a computer in vegetable oil on the internet (for cooling) and decided to try it out. Using molten fat from a deep fryer instead of oil that's liquid at room temperature.

[–]Stompedyourhousewith 1 point2 points ago

...but does liquid fat work?

[–]Afirejar 1 point2 points ago

Vegetable oil actually works, fat just clogs the coolers and makes everything overheat.

I don't even want to know what thought process lead to this attempt to cool something with a deep fryer.

[–]Hu_dat 1 point2 points ago

No, you're supposed to use mineral oil. Its non-conductive.

[–]weetchex 49 points50 points ago

Delete your System 32 folder.

All will be well.

[–]kezza596 33 points34 points ago

Then run a magnet over it. It has to be in the same direction each time though or you could mess it up a little bit

[–]ripghoti 23 points24 points ago

Where the hell is the "Any" key? My computer doesn't seem to have one.

[–]arcusmae 18 points19 points ago

All this computer hacking is making me thirsty. How 'bout a "Tab"? Oh wait! The computer is starting!

[–]payne325 3 points4 points ago

Upvote for one of my all time favourite Simpsons references

[–]da1hobo 12 points13 points ago

[–]payne325 5 points6 points ago

I'm being milked for karma, yet I cant help myself. I must be an Easily Pleased Seal.

[–]GMan129 3 points4 points ago

fuck thats an old joke...

edit: to clarify, i meant that in a good way. gave me a nice bit of nostalgia

[–]ripghoti 2 points3 points ago

That's the main reason I said it, haha.

[–]MadLew 5 points6 points ago

When my PC gets slow i just chuck the components in with the dishes and give them a good scrub.

Some people suggest letting them dry but i think leaving them wet helps voltage timings etc.

[–]Sporkeldee 2 points3 points ago

Actually, I know a retired sailor who installed the first computers into aircraft carriers. They routinely washed motherboards in distilled water, and dried them in rubbing alcohol. Salt air is bad for electronics, yo.

I called Bullshit until he proved it by taking one of his sons' computers and doing it. Started just fine. I dont advocate this process, but it works.

[–]Platnium015 1 point2 points ago

The magnet will save your files.

[–]half_true 4 points5 points ago

that sucks that you couldn't download more RAM. i just downloaded an extra 4GB from this website so that i could play farmville. worked like a charm, and i saved $200!!

[–]jeep8790 -2 points-1 points ago

wait what? I cant really tell if this site is a joke or a really bad scam.

[–]camelCaseCondition 2 points3 points ago

It's a joke. Look at the company name/phone number.

[–]jeep8790 0 points1 point ago

thx

[–]Limiate 2 points3 points ago

You should have tried running your PC through the dishwasher. When mine got infected with a virus I ran it through a "Extreme Clean" cycle on "Sanitary Heat Dry." Computer viruses are tricky though and this one was water/bleach proof. Luckily Geek Squad was able to get me a new PC for only $2400!

[–]BootnyLeeFarnsworth 2 points3 points ago

What an idiot. Don't you know the only way to get rid of a virus is to dilute some Tamiflu into hydrogen peroxide and pour it on your hard drive?

[–]Limiate 1 point2 points ago

I tried airborne since it works for computer class teachers - right?

[–]lasserith 0 points1 point ago

Actually I hear acetone and hydrogen peroxide works wonders on most computer problems.

[–]R3DDIT5TALKER 0 points1 point ago

Is sulfuric acid any good?

[–]Tolin81 0 points1 point ago

Ah there is a website for shitty RAM downloads. I have been using it all day with no problems. Ram!

[–]thesplendor 8 points9 points ago

Hmm. Everything seems kosher. Were you building on thick carpet?

[–]relly100 18 points19 points ago

As a seasoned computer builder I have come to realise some 'tricks' when it comes to avoiding static shocks.

  1. Earth yourself by rubbing a balloon on your head. (Takes away all of the electricals)

  2. If you want to be taken seriously as a computer builder these are a must: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3T0Ml7Vth1w/Tu3hazSO7LI/AAAAAAAANEg/UF-7czF4uxc/s1600/Multi_Fuzzy_socks.jpg

  3. Always build your PC in an humid environment, such as a bathroom because sparks can't survive in humid environments. This also solves the issue of not having a reliable hard surface, who doesn't have tiles in the bathroom?.

[–]Hiyasc 10 points11 points ago

Change the third one to cold and dry and you're golden.

[–]Ninjasmooshr 7 points8 points ago

But there is a small chance a spark can actually survive in a bathroom. I say just build it submerged in the tub to be sure. There is nothing more humid than water.

[–]AddressOK 12 points13 points ago

If you say 'Tesla' 3 times while spinning in circles all static electricity will dissolve into the ether.

[–]TheMarshmallow -1 points0 points ago

I don't and I still don't have a hard surface

[–]SonicFlash01 3 points4 points ago

Computer hacking is tricky business but it sounds like you got this

[–]LegitMonkey 27 points28 points ago

I may of short circuited

[–]relly100 41 points42 points ago

Thanks for pointing that out. Amendments have been made. Keep up the good work!

You find an interesting new subreddit everyday.

Now I'm subscribed to waaaaaay too many.

[–]edwardly 46 points47 points ago

Because of the PCI Express specs, this card would still work - just at lower bandwidth.

Everyone seems to think otherwise. I've done this, except I purchased a riser, and cut the riser so that I could use a PCI Express x16 in a PCI Express x8 slot.

[–]skyride 33 points34 points ago

Given that the Dell Dimension 2300 is an incredibly old machine, I was guessing he was trying to squeeze it into an AGP slot, not a lower spec PCI-E slot.

Also, I have actually done what you are suggest before myself. If you're smart, you break the back off of the PCI-E 1x slot on the motherboard rather than attempting to cut the card.

[–]RedStill 2 points3 points ago

After seeing how many upvotes edwardly got, I'm not sure how many people here actually know what an AGP slot is

[–]incredulous_guy 6 points7 points ago

type of hedgehog, right?

[–]skyride -1 points0 points ago

PC GAMING MASTER RACE™ (Established: 2010)

[–]Riddla26 4 points5 points ago

Honestly, this image is older than most of the internet. I think I first saw this on Slashdot back when Slashdot wasn't shit, that's how long ago it was and it was still a repost then.

[–]TooSexyForMyKayak 0 points1 point ago

geforce 7xxx series are old, but not ancient old if you know what I mean.

[–]SnuffyTech 0 points1 point ago

Hipster

[–]Riddla26 1 point2 points ago

No my friend, this was never cool, sadly. :-(

[–]Kasoo 14 points15 points ago

Exactly right; Tom's Hardware did this (with tape instead of cutting however) to test the PCI-E bandwidth:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/pci-express-scaling-analysis,1572-3.html

[–]hotdrop 4 points5 points ago

This! I was pretty sure it would work too so i was actually surprised he said it didnt.

[–]thelessineeded 4 points5 points ago

He said it didn't because he was a troll and that wasn't a picture of his own card.

[–]nope_cubed 38 points39 points ago

I just died a little inside.

[–]benjick 62 points63 points ago

Because of how fucking old this image is?

[–]Akaforty 31 points32 points ago

No, because it was posted to /r/gaming and got on the frontpage.

[–]theCaptain_D 17 points18 points ago

Interestingly, if you run out of sockets for ram, you can just grind up a new ram module and pour it in through the CD drive.

[–]Jailescape 16 points17 points ago

Or you can just download it...

[–]free_hats 10 points11 points ago

[–]hmc94 3 points4 points ago

Just wondering, what do you really download from there?

[–]Skylarity 4 points5 points ago

This is what happens. The download bar lasts about 20 seconds.

[–]Y2JisRAW 1 point2 points ago

Nice Windows logo on the taskbar ;)

[–]Skylarity 0 points1 point ago

Heh, thanks!

[–]piyokochan 1 point2 points ago

What is in the "Wha...wha?" folder...?

[–]Skylarity 1 point2 points ago

NEDM, Heyayayayaya, The Best 404 Page Ever, Extreme Ads, fanten.swf (From The Best 404 Page Ever), corgi.swf (Also From The Best 404 Page Ever) Egoraptor, OMFGDogs (Under the title: "Cross your eyes and do the Magic Eye thing"), Starfield (Tip: Scroll your mouse wheel), and last but not least, Stretchy Hand.

[–]mikerz85 5 points6 points ago

Dude! don't give out that link! There's only so much RAM to go around and I want some left for my next computer.

[–]trampus1 6 points7 points ago

RAM is our nations most precious natural resource.

[–]malenkylizards 3 points4 points ago

Oh c'mon...You wouldn't download a RAM.

[–]crilen 0 points1 point ago

Prove it.

[–]Americoma 0 points1 point ago

I just did.

[–]ldm314 0 points1 point ago

But indeed I would!

[–]malenkylizards 0 points1 point ago

lol, what is that? Some kind of third-party swap-space setup?

[–]ldm314 0 points1 point ago

Exactly. Before Mac's had virtual memory, it was a virtual memory implementation that also used compression. You did get more 'usable' ram but it was pretty slow.

[–]Invisible_Midget 1 point2 points ago

Much simpler.

[–]Jailescape 0 points1 point ago

Works a lot better too. I just downloaded some more onto my laptop & ohh my. It actually started to fly, literally.

[–]iaacp 5 points6 points ago

Ahh, I see we're back in 2006.

[–]dh04000 2 points3 points ago

This is reallllly old. I remember seeing this around 2006...

[–]stalkingstalkers 1 point2 points ago

When asked to evaluate the situation, the customer's brother stated that he "couldn't see the problem." He later updated that it began to work, but "cut off around the edges" of the screen.

[–]captainbiggles 4 points5 points ago

I remember this photo from ages ago. Still funny though. I feel for the guy, because not only did he end up looking foolish, he ruined the part entirely.

[–]DoctorJoeseph -1 points0 points ago

No, he didn't, it still works.

[–]ABusFullaJewz 1 point2 points ago

It SHOULD work, though he probably damaged the card in the process. Otherwise, it should just run as x8 instead of x16

[–]Riddla26 2 points3 points ago

No, it doesn't work, because this is such an old image that he was trying to fit a new-fangled PCI card into his AGP slot which motherboards don't even come with anymore.

Sufficed to say having read the original thread on the forum this was posted to way back when (circa 2005-ish), it really didn't work.

[–]DigbyCaesar 18 points19 points ago

reposting of a repost of a repost of a repost.

It's too late for that now. They're everywhere

Edit: English lesson for me

[–]Vulthuryol 1 point2 points ago

I am so sorry to do this, but "They're*"

[–]Timmybee[S] 10 points11 points ago

That's ok. I learn English on reddit.

[–]Geminel 3 points4 points ago

There are far worse places my friend. Kudos.

[–]vincent118 4 points5 points ago

Really cuz I'd give their friend a high-five, he's kind of a dick but anyone too stupid to realize that cutting off a piece of their graphics card to get it to fit shouldn't be upgrading or building their own comp anyways.

[–]ArmoredBlood 0 points1 point ago

I read that in coach hine's voice.

[–]Timmybee[S] 0 points1 point ago

edit: Fixed incorrect spelling

[–]Soupster1234 0 points1 point ago

Whats with all these reposts?

[–]mrafaeldie12 0 points1 point ago

Why is this on /r/gaming? Oh i see, its because of the ultimate pc master race circlejerk.

[–]vicwolfe -1 points0 points ago

fuck fuck fuck. FUCK.

[–]munge_me_not -1 points0 points ago

Kind of like when you need a triple A battery and all you got is a broom.

[–]superman-ish 0 points1 point ago

I used to sell computer memory for a living and you have no idea how many people did this kind of thing. The original iMac took SO DIMMS and someone tried putting one into their video memory slot. If you are not familiar with this the difference is maybe a centimeter. So this guy actually tried using a rubber mallet to RAM it into place (see what I did there?) Suffice to say he destroyed his computer and then tried to blame my company.

[–]Kiyiko 0 points1 point ago

This works for PCI-E cards ^_^

[–]KishCom 0 points1 point ago

hah! I knew a guy who did this with an EISA video card trying to fit it in an ISA slot.

Man... that must be close to two decades ago now!

[–]Cactusgun 0 points1 point ago

I put my power supply in the dryer to give it more volts by using the static in the dryer.

[–]ElectricSistaHood 0 points1 point ago

Recently, /r/gaming has been a snake eating its own tail. Re, followed by post.

[–]TehKazlehoff -1 points0 points ago

i couldn't figure out what the hell he supposedly cut off. until i finally clued in about 2 minutes later he was talking about the PCIe connector.

IMO this is a troll. no way someone is THAT stupid.

please lord, don't let it be possible for someone to actually be THAT dumb.

[–]midwestgator 1 point2 points ago

I work for a networking company that sells (high end) server based networking appliances.

We got a call this week from a customer that said their NIC card was shorting out the motherboard.

It turns out they did this... Cut off the extra pins on the PCI-E/X (we use both) connector to try to make it fit in an incorrect slot.

[–]PeabodyJFranklin -1 points0 points ago

I have a couple of PCI-X 133 Intel Pro/1000 dual port cards I've pulled from salvage servers, that work just fine in regular PCI slots, with a bit of card hanging off the end. This way you get 2 native ESXi compatible NIC ports without my mucking around with oem.gz files. Sure they won't both run full bandwidth, but they'll work fine for a virtualized router.

Now for the ugly part..when the extra won't fit in the available space, I cut it off. I've used nippers, and most recently just pulled out my tin snips. They make quick work of the fiberglass connector. :-D

Edit: PCIe can do this too, you just have to wire the card, or the port, to tell it what speed to run at. Bitcoin miners do this to slot another giant GPU in 1x PCIe slots.

[–]midwestgator 0 points1 point ago

yup, some cards can be modified and still be functional.

This customer didn't seem to know what they are doing or else screwed it up. We don't care, just don't call us when you screw it up... they did...

[–]Estarrol 0 points1 point ago

Well being a tech noob here, what exactly did he do wrong here? from a glance I can't tell.

[–]Seraphite 0 points1 point ago

He cut his fucking computer.

[–]Bmandoh 0 points1 point ago

if this is real they deserved it.

[–]00OO00 0 points1 point ago

I had a friend who did that with RAM for a PowerMac 8600. There were two banks of memory slots and he luckily only blew out one of them so the computer was still functional.

[–]Spjoon 1 point2 points ago

I remember when I was putting together my first computer the processor cracked when I tried to close the lid and the little lever that was necessary for holding the processor in place wasn't even close to the thingy I was supposed to attach it to.

So I checked and double checked the MoBo and the processor. Maybe I bought ones that didn't match or something. Nope, everything was in order according to the information provided on the boxes.

So as a last resort I called my friend who started building computers when I was messing around with Legos. He said "You got to press harder!" to which I replied "Are you insane?"

Anyway, I grew some balls and forced the lever to close accompanied by a soundtrack of nightmares my processor made. 100% sure I've ruined it I assembled the rest of the computer and pressed the power button. SUCCESS!

Never been so scared before.

[–]Terr_ 1 point2 points ago

I've built my last three or four machines, and firmly seating the processor still creeps me out, every single time. (For heatsinks, it depends a bit on their design and retention system.)

[–]Spjoon 0 points1 point ago

I've built three by now. Theres two things that always happen. I get a mini heart attack when attaching CPU to MoBo and i cut myself with the metal part on the backside of the computer case when making room for video card.

[–]Terr_ 0 points1 point ago

I think the latter varies depends a lot on how much you sink into the chassis.

[–]jtypin 0 points1 point ago

  1. Nothing to do with gaming in the least, this belongs in the computer section.

  2. This post gets me every damn time, it's a legend on the big computer forums, If you hunt around you can actually find the original post and all the reactions. Many many lulz.

[–]ProNewbie 0 points1 point ago

I want to find this person and is friend and slap them both

[–]pmille31 0 points1 point ago

I'm reading these comments, scared out of my mind, then I realized these people are joking... That was a close one ladies and gentlemen.

I need to give my GPU a hug

[–]VictorDUDE 0 points1 point ago

Nvidia 9800 GTS? can't really see

edit: its GTX, clearly

[–]ailee43 0 points1 point ago

oddly enough, this does not kill the graphics card. The other way to do it is to chop off the back stop on your 8x slot.

[–]crickem_nigfops 1 point2 points ago

RE: Fw: FWD: Fw: Fwd: Fwd: FW: fwd: FWD: FW: Fwd: Fw: lel XD!!!!!!!!11!

[–]forbestalley 0 points1 point ago

This post literally infuriated me.

[–]OrderInTheChaos 0 points1 point ago

I have never been angrier at something stupid for no reason in my life.

[–]super_INEK 1 point2 points ago

For everyone crying over the stupidity. If he had done this right, the gpu would still work. If you know which pins are responsible for the 8X PCIE you can cut the rest pieces (mostly pc reviewers just tape the pins for test purposes) and it will still work.

[–]AxeManActual 0 points1 point ago

Generally if things don't fit, you just need to whittle them down a bit. Or glue the corresponding geometric shapes to them.

[–]noble8301 1 point2 points ago

I think this was the first image Al Gore posted on the internet shortly after he invented it.

[–]MJZMan 0 points1 point ago

I dunno, call me crazy, but even though you CAN cut a card and have it still work, isn't it far easier to LOOK SHIT UP BEFORE YOU BUY? That's where the stupid comes in. Dumbass here just buys any old fucking card and THEN asks about fitting it? Come on, that's amazingly stupid, no matter how many lifepro type tips are out there for cutting & modding a graphics card.

[–]BillyEffingMays 0 points1 point ago

And instead of helping the poor fool we all point and laugh at him. PC master race at its best.

[–]mathius123 0 points1 point ago

This is why I will always have a job.

[–]shenanigans19 1 point2 points ago

[–]derpandlurk 0 points1 point ago

this repost is so old, you can easily trace it back to /g/

[–]michaeldcurry1 0 points1 point ago

Shit, this is fucking old. I must have seen this picture about 18 months ago, and even then, I was behind with it.

[–]ZapActions-dower 1 point2 points ago

Houston, we have a repost.

[–]0rangecake 1 point2 points ago

What a great repost!

[–]Bosticles 1 point2 points ago

People bitching about reposts need to shut the fuck up. Seriously, just down vote it and move on. I haven't seen it yet and I was amused so I upvoted. If it really is as well known as you say than eventually it will be buried, but if it isn't than you are in the minority and need to stfu and let people enjoy reddit. Not everyone has achieved elite internet browsing status.

[–]-TheDoctor 1 point2 points ago

I'm the Doctor, I have achieved elite everything status. But I still had not seen this post until now.

[–]Dkeh -1 points0 points ago

Laughed uncontrollably at this thread at work.

[–]M374llic4 0 points1 point ago

Older then a brontosaurus cock.

[–]exteras 0 points1 point ago

The best part about the comments in this thread is that nearly everyone thinks the friend was wrong. He's not, technically.

It kind of proves the point that reddit is full of people who pretend to be smarter than they actually are.

[–]cdhfrog 0 points1 point ago

That is for PCIE cards, now everyone is smarter than they actually are?

[–]toadwarrior 0 points1 point ago

A severely old stupid repost. You must feel proud.

[–]X-Craft -1 points0 points ago

Wow, he totally wasted that seven year old AGP graphics card...

So since when a GPU related to /r/gaming?

[–]ElagabalusCaesar 1 point2 points ago

Generally, /r/hardware is reserved for serious discussion, not gamer culture

[–]V2Blast[M] 0 points1 point ago

It's not, at least in this case.

[–]eric0rr 0 points1 point ago

wat?!

[–]-TheDoctor -2 points-1 points ago

Translation: "Herp derp, I know nothing about PC gaming."

[–]V2Blast[M] 0 points1 point ago

This post is not directly gaming-related.

[–]-TheDoctor 0 points1 point ago

Still. Inadvertently it is gaming related.

[–]V2Blast[M] 0 points1 point ago

"Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

[–]-TheDoctor 0 points1 point ago

then remove the post. you obviously have no problem with it or you would have removed it already. if you feel like it isnt gaming "related" enough to have a place on this subreddit then get rid of it.

[–]V2Blast 0 points1 point ago

I already removed it.

Removed posts can still be seen if you have a link to the thread (such as the one provided by this reply).

Further proof that /r/gaming is full of PC fanboys. Let me post a picture of my mice, that relates to PCs so therefore it relates to gaming, easy karma!

[–]-TheDoctor -2 points-1 points ago

the 9800 GTX is a GAMING grade graphics card. on the highest end of the spectrum at the time of it's release. That's why this falls into the category of GAMING, whether or not its on PC or console. also, news flash, consoles have the same types of hardware in them as PCs do, just at a lower cost because they use cheaper components. an XBOX is basically a computer with only one main function. gaming. a Home Desktop Computer has multiple main functions such as gaming, as well as coding, web browsing, video editing, photoshop, etc. etc. the pictures of mice people post here are almost ALWAYS gaming mice. so, naturally, that falls under the gaming umbrella.

and don't get hypocritical by calling us all PC fan boys when you are doing nothing but being a console fanboy by posting that.

[–]Faceless_Troll 1 point2 points ago

Okay, your "PC Master Race" is better than everyone else and always will be. You win. And when did I say I was console fanboy? If this is what /r/gaming has become, then I don't want to a part of it.

[–]-TheDoctor -1 points0 points ago

it's called inferring. i can infer you are a console fanboy because of how you constantly put down anyone who condones PC gaming. i never said PC gaming was better, all i did was lay down the FACTS.
