You know actually I spend a lot of time figuring out how commenting "works", and there are a few scenarios with this.

1.) Pulling your buddy out of the mud. It's not that hard to respond to a comment getting down voted with at least half assed reasoning as to why that being down voted is dumb. Usually this results in some "sling shot" points as the original comment will go from negative to pretty high usually quickly.

2.) The sacrifice play. You can also respond to the comment with explaining WHY this got down voted and exactly how them doing so makes them predictable and a hive mind. You don't actually have to explain if the down voting is justified or not, it will fall on deaf ears since you are not really going to be on their good side. This will land you down votes (usually -10 or so), but will usually propel the original comment high.

3.) The full retard. This one is obvious. if you respond to the original comment in an insulting manner AND don't explain why you disagree with his down votes very clearly, you both will be shot down.

Sounds like a bunch of hogwash, but this theory rarely if ever fails.
