Russian variant of John Doe is Ivan Ivanovitch Ivanov.

Ivanovsky is not a proper Russian Surname..it kinda feels Polish or Russian-Jewish.

[–]MadZ111 28 points29 points ago

Yeah. I am Russian and here name Ivan Ivanovich Ivanov is used on like credit card advertisements or when you go to something that requires some paperwork, lik visa office, they would have that name on sample forms with examples of how to fill them in. So Ivanov is Russian form of it and Ivanovsky is very Polish.

[–]K0TO 9 points10 points ago

Yes, I can confirm this.

I wonder what the reason is for the misconception that most Russian surnames end in -sky instead of -ov/ev?

[–]Den0702 1 point2 points ago

It's not a misconception, there are lots of Russians with surnames ending in -sky. Tchaikovsky and Dostoyevsky are probably the most popular ones. They might take their roots from poland though.

Actual Russian surnames end with -ov, -ev and -in.

[–]TheSonofMrGreenGenes 91 points92 points ago

Fucking amen. I hate how anime turned into shoestring budget productions with androgynous characters.

Poor budget on animation =/= bad anime. It could have poor animation but still be an amazing series.

Translation: John Johnson Johns (or John, Son of John, of the Johns).

[–]mogifax 87 points88 points ago

Close, but no cigar. Ivan Ivanovich Ivanov's Anglo equivalent would be John Johnson, Jr.

Ivanovich is a patronymic, meaning that his Dad's first name was also Ivan. Patronymics end with -vich for boys and -vna for girls.

Edit: a fellow redditor pointed out that Jr. can only be used if we're assuming his father's name was exactly the same, which means grampa's first name should also be Ivan.

Charlie Sheen's full Russian name would therefore be Carlos Ramonovich Estevez (Карлос Рамонович Эстевез)

Angelina Jolie's full Russian name would be Angelina Jonatanovna Voight (Анжелина Джонатановна Войт)

Edit: random edits. Also, the westerners 99% of the time get the accent in the patronymic wrong. The way westerners say it (with accent towards the end of the word) makes it sound like a Polish or Jewish last name. Russians place the accent on the second syllable -- i-VA-novich, not i-va-NO-vich. The accent from the original name is preserved. The father's first name was i-VAN, not i-va-NOv.

[–]dianthe 37 points38 points ago

I'm a Russian living in USA... I have to explain what a patronymic is every time someone asks me my middle name :(

[–]mogifax 15 points16 points ago

Oh man, I can do a solid 20 minutes of complaining on this. First, they should allow you to tweak the name however you want when you get your first travel passport. All people named Ivan Anatolievich Smirnov, Ivan Valerievich Ivanov, or Ivan Aleksandrovich Sidorov need an option to officially become Ivan Anatoly Smirnov, Ivan Valery Ivanov, Ivan Alexander Sidorov. It's completely useless to drag all the suffixes with you into every piece of paper your name will be stamped and laminated on.

Second, they need to stop trying to standardize all transliteration rules. As of recently, the herpa derps at the foreign ministry are forcing surnames like Yatsenko and Sokira to be written into the system as "IATSENKO" and "SOKYYRA" because -- don't you know -- the "ya" sound is ALWAYS written as "IA", and the Ukrainian closed syllable "i" sound is not sounding Ukrainian enough without the "YY". Tards.

I've seen people not allowed to board their plane because of one letter difference in tickets/documents. So dumb.

[–]dianthe 3 points4 points ago

Yeah the whole spelling thing can be a real pain.

I remember when I was little all of Russian last names had a French spelling in passports, then everything got switched over to English spelling resulting in a rather different latin letter spelling of my family's last name. I was too young to really remember if we had any troubles because of that, I just remember I had to re-learn how to spell my last name in latin letters which was annoying in itself... especially when you have a name as long as mine!

[–]mogifax 1 point2 points ago

Yes! I actually remember all the 'ya' and 'ye' sounds were written like 'ja' and 'je' ... "v" was "w", German-style. "Ts" was just "c". Ugh.

[–]ice_freezer 2 points3 points ago

You don't tell. I've been assisting a man who wants a residence permit in Ukraine. Out of three times he crossed the border coming here they transcribed his surname from English into Ukrainian differently. Each. Goddamn. Time.

[–]lolodotkoli 3 points4 points ago

Amen me too

[–]mavriksfan11 3 points4 points ago

We have the same for Arabs, holy hell it sucks because everyone assumes that with a name that ends in "al-[insert literally anything here]" you must be a terrorist.

[–]mogifax 2 points3 points ago

that's good stuff

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

"Johnson" ("John's son") is a closer translation than "Jr." ("named after his father"), since the first name doesn't matter with "–son" just like "–vich".

[–]netoholic 1 point2 points ago

The "Jr." isn't a correct translation as there's no equivalent. For it to be correct, we have to assume his father also shared the exact same entire name as that is the convention by which "Jr." is applied to Anglo names. The rest of your information about patronymics is correct though.

[–]Cptn_Awesome 243 points244 points ago

Decendant of Anton Antonov Antonovich

[–]MadWombat 32 points33 points ago

Reverse order, true Russian would be Anton Antonovich Antonov

[–]wessubba 18 points19 points ago

Actually, the Russian middle name is called the patronymic with the suffix -ovich for males and -ovna for females. Thus, it can be inferred that Ivan is named for his father, Ivan.

[–]CoffeeIsMyConstant 0 points1 point ago

What about Milla Jovovich? Shouldn't she be Milla Jovovna instead?

(edit) Thanks RoFox for the explanation. TIL if I post a reply before checking out someone's wiki link, I'm gonna have a bad time.

[–]RoFox 7 points8 points ago

Jovovich is her last name, not her patronymic. From wikipedia: "Some South Slavic surnames (usually Serbian, Croatian or Bosnian) look morphologically identical to East Slavic patronymics, but do not change form between masculine and feminine: Milla Jovovich and not 'Jovovna'. In addition, these surnames cannot be contracted using the pattern described above, and generally carry the stress on a different syllable. Examples include Mikhail Andreyevich Miloradovich and Vladislav Khodasevich."

Vodka Vodkanov Vonkanonanonanavich

[–]Arthean 99 points100 points ago

Vonkanonanonanavich sounds like a damn sexy drink.

Also, it's own drunk test.

[–]DynamiteWthLaserBeam 33 points34 points ago

Oh, I've had one of those before turns out its just a 3 gallons of vodka

It's designed to kill anyone who drinks it and isn't Russian

EDIT: I'm not Russian and I'm dead

[–]Willyjwade 10 points11 points ago

I'm Russian and I'm also dead, but alas my death was due to the horrible syphilis not the Vonkanonanonanavich.

[–]Lusankya 2 points3 points ago

Hey, it beats the inevitable exile to Siberia.

[–]Dosko 2 points3 points ago

how do you order one after a few drinks?

[–]RafaDDM 33 points34 points ago

is he related to Vodka Drunkenski?

[–]gulpeg 7 points8 points ago

Cousin of Putin Puta Putinski

[–]wheresmyhouse 4 points5 points ago

Grandson of Yuri Yurov Yuronivich.

[–]bluegoon 10 points11 points ago

Demetri Demtrijev Demitrivnovskivetch...kapova

[–]solistus 15 points16 points ago

Well, Ivanovitch means 'son of Ivan', so his father's name is also Ivan Ivanovsky.

[–]nikchi 1 point2 points ago

From this may be able to deduce that his grandfathers name was also ivan, making the fathers full name, Ivan ivanovich ivanovsky.

[–]A_Breath_Of_Aether 9 points10 points ago

Not necessarily. The father's patronimic isn't known. All we can deduce is that the grandfather's last name is Ivanovsky.

[–]Soviet_Waffle 7 points8 points ago

Russian here, if he was a decendant of Anton Antonov Antonovich he would be

Ivan Antonov Antonovich

The middle name in Russian always refers to the father.

[–]SolomonGomes 22 points23 points ago

Any relation to Soda Popinski?

[–]kpanzer 17 points18 points ago

Isn't that Bald Bull? Soda Popinski is more.... well, pink-o.

[–]SelectaRx 16 points17 points ago

Funfact: Soda Popinkski's original name was Vodka Drunkenski. Apparently, Nintendo thought the most controversial aspect about him was his name and it's relationship to alcoholism.

[–]imbored53 13 points14 points ago

Despite all of his dialogue being clear references to alcoholism... Even a 6 year old me could tell what was supposed to be in that bottle. And while were on the topic of controversial, what was the deal with Piston Honda's Japanese.

[–]viepro 11 points12 points ago

Honestly, if you got hit in the head for a living that's probably all you would be able to say as well.

[–]SelectaRx 5 points6 points ago

Brain damage, I'm guessing.

[–]roguemenace 4 points5 points ago

Ya, Popinski has pink skin and wears a red speedo.

SOurce: Youtube

[–]Potater757 2 points3 points ago

That's not Popinski, that's Bald Bull. When you google "soda popinski" the majority of pictures on the first page are of popinski, you should've been able to see the difference. You had one goddamn job.

[–]qwak 7 points8 points ago

Actually, the middle name Ivanovich is a patronymic. Ivan is actually named after his father.

If this was Ivan's daughter, then perhaps she would be named Ivana Ivanovna Ivanovskaya, which are the feminine forms of the patronymic and family name - at least as best as i can suggest given that i only know a bit of russian. (see wikipedia if you're interested).

Also, for the sake of completeness, names ending in 'sky' are often Polish rather than truly Russian.

[–]cauchy37 2 points3 points ago

Names that end with -ski, -cki, -dzki, -sik, -cik are of Polish descent, connected with Szlachta (or Nobility). (Source)

[–]Walletau 0 points1 point ago

Not quite.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

My name's Anton...

[–]dianthe 0 points1 point ago

*Anton Antonovich Antonov

Antonov is the last name, Antonovich is a patronymic :P

[–]Vaynax 11 points12 points ago

Ivanovsky is Polish. You want Ivanov. Ivan Ivanovich Ivanov. THAT is the most Russian name ever. Or perhaps Владимир Владимирич Владимиров. In Russian the first name is normal, the middle name is always your father's name + 'ich' at the end, and your last name ends in ov/ev for males and ova/eva for females. You can see Cptn_Awesome and I_REMOVE_COCKS are doing it wrong: having mixed up the middle/patronymic and family names.

[–]NakedMarshall 29 points30 points ago

Ivan ivanovitch is the russian equivalent to John Doe

[–]wolf550e 22 points23 points ago

John Johnson Jr.

[–]Terr_ 3 points4 points ago

John Doe Junior?

('Cause the middle name refers to the father's given name, so Ivan, son of Ivan, etc.)

Ivanov is a more Russian name than Ivanovsky

[–]gloilin 22 points23 points ago

Ivanovsky? Sounds Polish.

[–]Soviet_Waffle 15 points16 points ago

Yep, the Russian version would be just Ivanov.

[–]crapfoodpants 6 points7 points ago

Confirmed. Ivanovsky sounds a bit Jewish actually.

[–]Soviet_Waffle 2 points3 points ago

Jewish would probably be like Ivanman.

akin to:

Saharov -> Saharovich -> Zukerman

[–]Doc88 10 points11 points ago

Absolutely not. Polish have more of the Sh sound in their vocabulary.

[–]MadWombat 16 points17 points ago

And more stringed consonants. Grdzhemilski or Strpvetzki

[–]theodrixx 6 points7 points ago

Gesundheit.

[–]Shanhaevel 5 points6 points ago

Polish here. It does sound Polish, we're Slavs after all and some of our surnames overlap actually. Truth is, if you guys learn one of these: Polish, Russian, Czech, Ukrainian, Belorussian or Slovak you'll be able to communicate all around here. There's also some Slavs down to the South, like Serbs and Bosnians, but truth be told I never heard them speak, so I have no idea how far are they from our language here. Back to the topic: I mean, it may or may not be a native name to our lands, I'm not into that kind of research, but you'll definitely find a lot of Ivanovskys in Poland. Not to mention all the Kowalskis of course. Along with the one from Killzone, who I am proud of as a true gaming patriot. Did that sound weird?

[–]cu0 2 points3 points ago

This sound Czech-like.

By the way Polish Ivan is Jan and this translates to John.

[–]Icanhazcomment 0 points1 point ago

Sounds Serbian to me.

[–]PockyFox 4 points5 points ago

Detective Conan!?

[–]ohcumgache 7 points8 points ago

I personally know a guy named Ivan Ivanovich Ivanov.

[–]txn9 16 points17 points ago

names that end with sky are mostly of polish decent. my dads being ninovsky

[–]ineedmoresleep 7 points8 points ago

yes, and of course there can't be an overlap between polish and russian names. nevermind that they are both slavic and all...

[–]txn9 10 points11 points ago

each slavic country has its last names that look alike. for Poland it is sky. Russia has many rovs. ukrainians are chko, nko. im just saying that yes names can mix but if you're a russian with a name of sky you are most likely of polish decent or a polish man with a name like horoshko you're family at a point was in ukraine...

[–]dianthe 4 points5 points ago

Yep, I'm Russian but my maiden name is actually of Belorussian decent as it ends in "nko". My mom had a typical Russian maiden name ending in "ova". I think people from Slavic countries are much more aware of these differences than Westerners because to Westerners all of our last names sound the same. I always knew my last name wasn't Russian when growing up because it was actually quite unique in St. Petersburg, very rarely have I met other people at school whose name ended in "nko" or "chko".

[–]snackburros 3 points4 points ago

Ski/skii/sky/skiy is a name indicating "from a place" so theoretically it can be from anywhere in the former Russian Empire and Eastern Europe. The ov/ev/in form is really just a shortened form of the former. Neither is specifically indicative of place of origin like enko/ych is indicative of Ukrainian origin.

[–]cu0 4 points5 points ago

You're right. Note, that the -ski suffix is most popular in Poland. That's because most Polish noble's names is ending with it. After ground giveaways by tsar peasantry often used this suffix by remaking their own surnames or they used the whole nobility's names. And that's why almost every Pole has -ski name. Russian nobility often had -ov endings, for example Romanov, but Shuysky. Ruthenian nobility was rather small and then unificated with Polish, so it's rare to hear Ostrogsky or Wishnyovetsky names on Ukrainian or Belarusian streets.

[–]daaaamngirl88 3 points4 points ago

Or Jewish. Russian Jew here with sky at the end of my last name.

[–]Evanescene6 18 points19 points ago

Boris Borisov Borisovich

[–]daaaamngirl88 3 points4 points ago

In Russia your middle name is always your fathers. They wouldn't even say your last name, just your first name followed by your father's name. So it's actually common to have two of the same names if you were named after your father.

[–]dabezian 1 point2 points ago

But what about my friend Dmitri? Dmitri Dmitri Dmitridev. Most common name in all motherland.

Actual lines from Peter the Great, (1986) starring Maximillian Schell:

Drunken Emperor Peter, wandering the empty halls, to midnight shift palace guard: "So tell me, what do the ordinary people think about Mother Russia? What do you think about Mother Russia, Ivan Ivanovitch?"

"Honourable Emperor, my name is not Ivan Ivanovitch."

"Do you ever actually think about Russia, Ivan Ivanovitch?"

"Honourable Emperor, my name is not Ivan Ivanovitch."

"Do you ever actually think at all, Ivan Ivanovitch?"

"Honourable Emperor, my name is not Ivan Ivanovitch; Honourable Emperor, my name is Stefan Stefanovitch."

For John Doe there is also "Vasya Pupkin". Use that name when you want a generic russian name. (vasya is the shortened form of vasiliy)

It's a common trope in Russian literature to have names like this...usually with some sort of word play involved too.

It's a standard misconception/prejudice, but -sky/-ski aren't common in Russian last names.
