I once tried to play a GameCube emulator with a PlayStation 3 controller that had to be mapped to XBOX controls in order to interface with the emulator. Boy was that a clusterfuck when the game asked me to press a button. Never again.

It's enough to go from 360 to PS3. Last weekend I played Lollipop Chainsaw on the PS3 and Deadly Premonition on the 360 - FUCK QUICKTIME EVENTS. I had to do the same checkpoint in LP 3 times because I fucked up the X.

Cross, Square, Triangle, Circle. These are PS's official names for their buttons.

If I can find it later, or if anyone is less lazy than me, there are reasons why these shapes and colors were chosen.

Circle and cross are used in Japan to signify "yes" and "no" respectively (or right and wrong, depending on the context), triangle I think was supposed to be for alternate viewpoints IIRC and I don't remember what square was for.

Edit: Found the article.

"Other game companies at the time assigned alphabet letters or colors to the buttons. We wanted something simple to remember, which is why we went with icons or symbols, and I came up with the triangle-circle-X-square combination immediately afterward. I gave each symbol a meaning and a color. The triangle refers to viewpoint; I had it represent one's head or direction and made it green. Square refers to a piece of paper; I had it represent menus or documents and made it pink. The circle and X represent 'yes' or 'no' decision-making and I made them red and blue respectively. People thought those colors were mixed up, and I had to reinforce to management that that's what I wanted."

I grew up as a Nintendo kid and could have used the NES and SNES controllers in my sleep. Nowadays I play with a 360 Pad on my PC... you have no idea how hard those quicktime events are for me.

I don't think I ever memorized the A/B button positions on NES growing up, nor A/B/X/Y on SNES—I think I'd just learn which buttons did what contextually and memorize them on a game-by-game basis.

Then, on PS1, I guess things like QTEs forced me to memorize the X/O/Square/Triangle button locations.

Now, even though I play almost everything on Xbox 360, I still internally think about the controller as though it's a PS1 controller - things like "hit triangle to reload." Since my brother and I grew up playing the same games on the same consoles, I guess he inherited this problem too. When playing 360 games together, we both call the buttons by their PS controller equivalents.

I use an Xbox 360 controller for PC gaming, and so do many others since pretty much every game supports it.

Depends on the game type/genre. No one uses a 360 controller with an FPS or an RTS/MOBA on the PC

Not sure why, but I've always been able to mentally compensate. Then again, I play a lot of emulated SNES games on a Sony controller, and play controller based games with Microsoft inputs for the same.

The only controller I have problems compensating for is the Gamecube, probably because I never owned one, so don't have enough experience with it to mentally map the buttons.

As a gamer who's played on play station consoles since ps1, for me, I refer to all "lower" buttons as X, regardless of console.

When my gf plays 360 with me, I just call out the buttons as if it were a ps3 controller and she understands what I mean faster than memorizing the Xbox layout.
