I've been thinking about just having our own status indicator in the sidebar (who reads that? hah). It shouldn't be too hard to do - the only difficult part would be updating the sidebar (which is one API method I've not tried yet).

What about an external script that would update an image every five minutes or so? Kinda like Minestatus status images or ones commonly used in forum signatures.

I originally had diamonds/coal there for a placeholder, and then pumpkins/jack-o-lanterns, but then when I implemented it, redstone lamps became obvious. :)
