I actually find that the 40-something and 50-somethings type reasonably well because they took typography classes in high school; typewriters were still pretty frequently used before the widespread use of PCs. What they aren't so deft at, however, is using the keyboard to interact with the GUI at all. They use the mouse for everything, and their clicking/movement is so slow and deliberate it drives me absolutely insane.

[–]cheezgear 12 points13 points ago

I've noticed that too. They always tell me I do everything really fast compared to them (like a 1 hour task for me takes them 3 or 4)...it makes me wonder about how much productivity would go up if they didn't use the mouse so often.

[–]toxilium 1 point2 points ago

They just don't understand hotkeys. Completely foreign to them for the most part, unless they have used specific software for quite a long time.

This is how my boss transfers files between folders. Select file, move mouse to edit menu, move down to copy, navigate to other folder in same file manager window, edit, paste, navigate back to source folder and repeat.

[–]DevilMirage 4 points5 points ago

You have my sympathies

[–]SanchoDeLaRuse 5 points6 points ago

I got to "Select file, move mouse to edit menu" before it was too painful to continue.

Stay strong, my friend. You're almost at the finish..

[–]jump_the_snark 2 points3 points ago

Ouch

tl;dr

[–]pour_some_sugar 1 point2 points ago

I remember seeing paralegals do document editing 10 years ago using hotkeys to edit documents at such speeds it was dizzying to watch them do it.

What I tend to see most in people these days (young or old) is them using that annoying two-finger hunt-and-peck method.

It's so slow it drives me nuts! I don't know how they can stand it.

[–]RetepNamenots 4 points5 points ago

That isn't what typography is... [/pedantic amateur typographer]

[–]Anemona_anonima 5 points6 points ago

Yes, but I've noticed something else. Because some people are so used to typewriters and typewriters in my experience require a harder push from the fingers than a keyboard, they actually type as in the gif, with effort, with hate, making a lot of noise.

[–]RyanFuller003 0 points1 point ago

I'm a pretty loud typer myself, mostly because I'm doing it fast. Never used a typewriter, though.

[–]Anemona_anonima 2 points3 points ago

I'm a pretty fast typer myself, but silent. It may be the keyboard. This is mildly interesting. Edit: and I used a typewriter, studied mechanography.

I have a theory on people not used to using a mouse. They just have one more step between their thought and the on-screen action. Us Internet folk don't have to think about using the mouse - we just think what we want to do with the cursor and it just happens, so to speak - just the same way I don't have to think what muscles to contract in my hand when throwing a ball. People with little experience with a mouse have to do this consciously - they must think about how they need to move the mouse, so that the cursor moves the way they want.

Speak for yourself, sonny.

Some of us used computers before there was such a thing as a GUI.

I'm sorry sir, I'll get off your lawn now!

Really though, I love my coworkers anyway; they might be frustrating at times, but they're usually pretty grateful when I give them tips and it's nice when IT advice is appreciated instead of rebuked.

To be fair most people my age do exactly like you describe. I'm one of those guys that learned TRS-DOS when I was 13 somewhere around 1981 or so.

[–]RyanFuller003 -1 points0 points ago

Well. You're 18 years older than I, and I pretty much grew up with Windows 3.1 and then '98, so I'll grant you that.

I never really learned how to use too many keyboard commands until 2010 when I was promoted to an IT job, though.

Being 47 and having an office management background for over 25 years... I can not only type 10x faster, but hot key like a boss. Suck it, punks.

[–]workpuppy 2 points3 points ago

This. Typing was a required skill for a lot of people in the old days. Just because everyone didn't have to type doesn't mean that the people who did couldn't beat your ass like a drum.

[–]youcantexplainthat00 2 points3 points ago

Even people who don't use home and end drive me crazy.

[–]fotoman 2 points3 points ago

crtl-a, crtl-e

[–]spundnix32 1 point2 points ago

Haha. To the top of the comments with you. And get off my lawn!

[–]WitchDr 27 points28 points ago

I'm 43 and I use hotkeys so you kids can all go to hell.

[–]midnightauto 4 points5 points ago

people our age grew up with hot keys as our old computers didnt have a fuckin mouse

[–]DeFeet 7 points8 points ago

Our whole office got mechanical keyboard, and when we type like this is sounds like gunfire, the whole office is like a warzone.

[–]cheezgear 12 points13 points ago

Slow it down and make the backspace key the most used key.

[–]magicbullets 8 points9 points ago

"HOW DO I TURN THE CAPITALS OFF?"

[–]Reilly149 10 points11 points ago

"ITS OK I HAVE A TOOL BAR FOR THAT"

[–]kaede1s 3 points4 points ago

"WHICH TOOLBAR WAS IT AGAIN?"

[–]Reilly149 3 points4 points ago

"I THINK ITS THE ONE THAT CAME WITH THE SMILEY FACES"

[–]kaede1s 2 points3 points ago

"I OPENED A PAGE BY DOUBLE-CLICKING A LINK AND NOW IT SAYS MY COMPUTER HAS A VIRUS. CAN YOU DELETE it for me? By the way I found out how to turn the capitals off."

[–]SanchoDeLaRuse 0 points1 point ago

JUST HOLD DOWN THE SHIFT KEY WHEN YOU TYPE like this.

[–]jump_the_snark 4 points5 points ago

Hotkeys are for pussies. Autocorrect and macros, bitches.

[–]almostnormal 3 points4 points ago

Old guy here. I touch type, but don't know a single hotkey trick.

[–]NotEntirelyUnlike 0 points1 point ago

Even better on a conf call when they will not mute their lines.

[–]fondupot 4 points5 points ago

my boss still uses hunt and peck....how...just how...

[–]Speed_Bump 0 points1 point ago

I know guys who have been coding for 30+ years who type with two fingers on each hand. And while it looks like hunt and peck they can probably out type most people 30 years younger than themselves.

[–]laythor 1 point2 points ago

i still vividly remember the typing class my parent's sent my sister and me to when we were still in grade school.

[–]AliasUndercover 1 point2 points ago

I type just like that...what about it.

[–]pinguinxxx 1 point2 points ago

I was creating my own hot keys on Prodigy* on an 80286 back in the 80's punks!

[–]hilariouspicard 0 points1 point ago

...every person in my office knows how to type. Fuck me, right?

[–]otherworldsthanthese 0 points1 point ago

I'm 26, type like an idiot, but generally hit 79wpm in testing.

I type with all the fingers on my left hand, and one finger on my right. Used to be 1 and 1, but a wrist injury forced me to type correctly with my left. I can only hope one day i hurt my right wrist and can become normal.

It's just so hard to slow down and force my right hand to do it properly, especially when most of my job involves typing.

[–]ChriSoccer13 1 point2 points ago

Anyone know if this from "Ace Ventura"?

[–]Arcturisthebear 4 points5 points ago

It's actually from Bruce Almighty.

[–]ChriSoccer13 3 points4 points ago

Thank you kindly, sir. I've never seen it before; is it worth watching?

[–]Arcturisthebear 5 points6 points ago

I thought it was good; it had Morgan Freeman as god, after all! Probably worth watching.

[–]ChriSoccer13 2 points3 points ago

Arrgh! Off to the seas of the interwebs to be doing some pirating. Thanks!

[–]cdcformatc 1 point2 points ago

It's actually worth paying for, if that is an option.

[–]Blue_Bi0hazard -1 points0 points ago

lol far too fast.
