The Jak & Daxter trilogy and Ratchet and Clank games for PS2 made up my entire middle school gaming life. I never found all the precursor orbs in Jak 2 though. Also star wars battlefront and kingdom hearts are awesome. So many good games for PS2.

[–]Burnner 4 points5 points ago

Me too man, me and my cousins would play the hell out of all these games, I still have them and went back to play through all of them.. ah the nostalgia

[–]TheCrispyNinka 4 points5 points ago

You just mentioned all 4 of my favorite game sagas. Dude. Battlefront 1&2, Kingdom Hearts 1&2, Jak & Daxter/Jak 2&3 and all of the Rachet and Clank games. These were what gave me my love for video games.

[–]bfmGrack 2 points3 points ago

Starwars battlefront 2. You have no idea of the epic sniper wars I had with one of my friends. Then there were the occasions of YOU LOOKED AT MY SCREEN! Yes. We played split screeen, and you weren't allowed to cross the midpoint on the map. was epic.

[–]AngelixArch 0 points1 point ago

Star Wars Battlefront 2 was absolutely EPIC on PC :D I still remember playing it on my dad's old computer :3 Great game!

[–]leoropes 39 points40 points ago

Bought the HD collection and I was super excited to play these games again. 100%'ed Jak and Daxter no problem. Started Jak 2 and I got reminded fairly quickly why it took me all Christmas vacation to beat back in the day. Still a good game but, man, it did have some cheap deaths.

[–]Commisioner_Freeman 8 points9 points ago

The key to Jak 2 was learning how to do each section. Most of it is fairly straight forward but breaking the resistance members out of the prison (I learnt the best way to do this is to sprint through the first section doing spin shots with the blaster until you get to the room with the electric fence as they will stop spawning) and the final boss/ Metal Head Nest (Vulcan Fury spam your way to the boss and use the blaster and your dark Jak powers to get the boss to one section of health. As long as you don't do anything stupid you're golden from then on.) sections could be a total bitch if you didn't know how to do them. Having played this game a billion times though I'm fairly confident I could do it in a sitting but only because I know how to through years of replays. Fucking love this game so much.

[–]Scubastevey 4 points5 points ago

The final boss is the most fun part of that game IMO, but trying to kill reminded me why it took 6 hours and 2 rage quits to do lol...that and the fact that all i had was the red gun because I ran out of ammo after 6 hours of attempts...D:

[–]_Gingy 2 points3 points ago

The running out of ammo is what made the final boss so hard. I had the red gun only as well. I did manage to finally beat him. I haven't picked up the game since :/

[–]Commisioner_Freeman 0 points1 point ago

I hated that you lost ammo between attempts. The best tactic is to save at the start and to load the file between deaths. This replenishes your ammo. However if you make to the last section the game autosaves over your save file so you lose the ammo if you die no matter what. However if you make 2 Save files at the start of the fight you can still just load the file that isn't overwritten by the autosave. Your only other alternative is to go on what I like to call ammo runs. This is where you ignore any enemies and run around the map punching ammo crates until you have the ammo you need and then kill yourself so you can start the fight with full ammo and full health.

[–]KiXpiX 0 points1 point ago

Same story exept that I still haven't beaten Jak 2.

[–]dantegrin 20 points21 points ago

this game was my childhood sadly i never really saw it get much fame :(

[–]ViolentOctopus 2 points3 points ago

Sadly there isn't another Jak

[–]Nipponjudoka 71 points72 points ago

I never understood why this game has such a bad rap for difficulty. The designers in the videos in Jak3 even said "if you were one of the few to complete Jak2, well done".

Is there some insane uberdifficulty setting or was I just doing it a little better than most? It took me the same amount of time as any other games.

[–]rubelmj 42 points43 points ago

It wasn't super difficult, but it was substantially more difficult than Jak & Daxter. That probably threw a lot of people off, especially those expecting to run though open levels and jump on some bosses three times like the first one.

[–]TehMost 1 point2 points ago

The key to that one was jumping the gaps in docks instead of actually taking the corners. Made things much easier

[–]Eldryce 0 points1 point ago

Am I the only one that found Jak 2 infinitely easier than the first game? First one took me ages, and I never did 100% it.

[–]leaflard 35 points36 points ago

Their were just a handful of missions that took more than a few tries to get past. Like the one mission on the docks where you have to get to the other side while wave after wave of troops come in by ship, and if you touch the water you get shot by some orb thing and die instantly. Took me forever and a rage quit to get past that part.

[–]RMULE 21 points22 points ago

That dock mission was frustrating as hell. There were a couple of timed missions navigating around the city that were very unforgiving too.

[–]JohnnyKewl 0 points1 point ago

That fucking dock mission. I lost my shit when I found out all you had to do was slide jump the whole way down the pier or use Dark Jak to blow up the machine that instakills you in the water. Not to mention the developers didn't add checkpoints in areas that very much needed them.

But honestly, I think most people didn't finish Jak 2 because it wasn't a particularly good game. Same with Jak 3.

[–]alexleafman 0 points1 point ago

Having recently played it, that mission is just as hard. But all the timed and racing mission were surprisingly easy.

[–]Omnipotentgrape 7 points8 points ago

That mission. I don't think I passed it. Time to get the PS2 out again.

[–]EmpyroR 12 points13 points ago

I respect your bravery, but pity your foolishness.

[–]ToraZalinto 9 points10 points ago

*PS3 HD collection

[–]Gamefreek 5 points6 points ago

Me and a friend both bought the HD collection to get some nostalgic feels, but could have been fine without this part. He only needed 2 tries, but it took me 3 FUCKING HOURS (including 2 rage quits) to get past this part. I celibrated getting past as if i had won the internetz, and saved as soon as possible afterwards. TL;DR: That part is a pain in the ass, never playing it again!

Edit: only hate that part, the rest of the game is good! (exept the mech missions, so...few...checkpoints....)

[–]leaflard 8 points9 points ago

None the less it was an incredible game in my opinion.

[–]Gamefreek 1 point2 points ago

agreed!

[–]TheRoboPenguin 2 points3 points ago

I remember that as my first ever rage quit. Hours and hours of repetition, only to have the game freeze as I touched dry land...

[–]Canas123 0 points1 point ago

I was stuck for a few hours on that mission when I first played the game, and I would get stuck on it for a little while whenever I wanted to play through a new save, but apart from that mission, there really aren't any missions you couldn't do in <5 attemtps.

[–]SlayerDudeMan 0 points1 point ago

That level was frustrating and fun as hell to complete.

[–]ElBagel 1 point2 points ago

This mission took me about a year complete. It was kind of ridiculous.

[–]feedjoecake 0 points1 point ago

I discovered if you hop on the hoverboard and time your L1 jumps right you can get the end without fighting a single enemy. You just have to make sure not to hoverboard into the water.

[–]c010rb1indusa 11 points12 points ago

For me the hardest part was just driving around the city without getting arrested. If you hit anything cops are all over you, plus I think you start the game with a high notoriety as well. I found getting from A to B a lot harder than the individual missions.

[–]ToraZalinto 2 points3 points ago

Which is why I hated the "Open environment that's really just a long ass hallway" that everyone seems to love about Jak II.

[–]uw_NB 7 points8 points ago

oh shit......... i actually spend 2 years playing this game since my parents didnt have money to buy us any other games :(..... cleared it at least twice with all the eggs and weapon and mode etc. Never heard anyone ever talk about this game so i have always thought that its just a very infamous game and its not a big accomplishment for clearing it twice T_T

[–]Commisioner_Freeman 7 points8 points ago

It was more that it had "That one level" type sections that could be really hard to beat if you approached them wrong. Collecting the Piece of Mar in the Slums is one that comes to mind.

[–]FishBonePendant 0 points1 point ago

The Red gun was never more useful than THAT level.

"Yay! I just killed the 20 snipers in font of me! But these rifles take too long to kill the twenty people right fucking behind me. How do I get all these guys of my back really quick?!"

[–]clouds31 4 points5 points ago

I found it hard because checkpoints were very scarce, so if you died you basically wasted 12 minutes.

[–]Vaelem 4 points5 points ago

This was probably why the second was harder than the third. The checkpoints in Jak 3 were very plentiful.

[–]FreeTopher 2 points3 points ago

I beat it when I was 9.

[–]R0bt0m 2 points3 points ago

Oh god the part where you have to jump up and rocks are randomly coming down from the top. That was some sadistic shit.

[–]InfiniteDeath 0 points1 point ago

Am I the only fucking guy around here who thinks Jak 2 wasn't hard and that Jak and Daxter was harder?!

[–]Riosan 1 point2 points ago

One mission in particular was literally impossible on Hero mode (the bonus super-difficult mode). It was really easy for you to unlock invincibility in Hero mode, but there was one mission where you had to sit in a rail gun and fire at moving ships, and enemies. Seems easy enough, after all, you're invincible, right? Wrong; the rail gun has its own health meter, and if it runs out, it blows up, and you're dead. In the normal difficulty, it's easily doable, but can be frustrating if you don't know where the enemies are. In Hero Mode, after about 8 shots, you're fucked. I've never beaten that mission.

[–]extra_23 0 points1 point ago

same her. The only thing I could never do, and still never do on the HD port, is get all the precursor orbs... fucking time trials and gun ranges...

[–]cable387 0 points1 point ago

I have to agree. I remember I beat the shit out of the game when it came out, and didn't find out it was supposed to be overly difficult until afterwards. It definitely had some tough parts (THE FUCKING DOCKS), but nothing a few retries couldn't fix.

[–]Harry_Hardlong 0 points1 point ago

There is 2 missions that I remember being exceptionally difficult. One where you had to hit these switches that where surrounded by mines in a lake located in the center of the city. And another where you had to beat Erol in a race through the city.

[–]Skimmerlit 0 points1 point ago

I beat it when I was six or seven. Beat Jak III and original too. Jak II was my first free roam game, and many fun times were had with it. Beat all of the Ratchet and Clanks that mattered save the first too.

[–]timth3troll 17 points18 points ago

I picked it up a few months ago, and I'm still stuck on one of the sewer missions where those three guys are following you. Fuckin' Metal Heads...

[–]daykonbacon 3 points4 points ago

its the sweeping death beams isnt it... those fuckers killed me for 2 days straight.

anyways, for the 1st 3, just learn the timings for thier sweeps, hard, but not too hard to get past without losing health. for the 2nd 3, hoverboard over the ramp directly behind the 1st 3. this way you can come round behind the 2nd pair and they wont realise till your up thier ass with that yellow gun.

after that theres a big wave of mh's to kill ( i recommend saving dark jak for this, 1 dark bomb will sort out most) and then gun down the rest with the vulcan

[–]timth3troll 2 points3 points ago

I will try this tonight after work, and let you know how it goes. You just made me a happy bastard.

[–]therealdemonssouls 0 points1 point ago

I had a glitch for a whole day where one of the followers would not appear. I reloaded several times and finally just shut off th eps3. When i restarted the system, that douche finally decided to show up. That was a pretty hard part. But most of the time, it was me struggling with the controls. I gues I just don't like how naughty dog makes controls (neither J&D or Uncharted controls work with me)

[–]brockm20 25 points26 points ago

Oh god the ragequit.....honestly the only game that has had me yelling at the top of my lungs multiple times

[–]suttert[S] 49 points50 points ago

The dock level where you have to get from one end to the other. You're getting ambushed the entire time.... that level will haunt my dreams forever

[–]Bubbabeba 21 points22 points ago

Hoverboard is very useful there. Fighting is useless on that mission.

[–]synthesezia 18 points19 points ago

+1 for the Hoverboard tactic. I got the perfect line through that entire section and done it on my 4th try or something.

[–]byobguy 12 points13 points ago

I never finished this game because of this part.

[–]DrShithead 4 points5 points ago

Yep.

[–]hytonight 1 point2 points ago

i killed the sub in the water with dark jak's ground smash move. i had to restart the entire game to get back to that mission with full dark eco though.

worth it.

[–]Gringuito 2 points3 points ago

Found this out the hard way after about 2 hours. Resistance is futile.

[–]Commisioner_Freeman 0 points1 point ago

I've used that tactic before. Can fuck you up pretty bad if you fall of the bridge. I went through it long jumping and using the blaster jump spin shot (as I like to call it. X, O, R1 with the blaster I believe) to take out enemies coming from behind.

[–]megajak 5 points6 points ago

The part where you have to protect the device at the end while samos floats it over to the hover car made me rage so hard.

[–]WindSandStars 6 points7 points ago

Is that where the oracle statue was? Because I actually sat there for about 30 minutes as a kid waiting for the waves to end, fighting them all off. I never realised you could just run until about 500 tries later.

The rest of the game isn't exactly difficult but it was really punishing when you died as you'd be thrown so far back every time. The animation/design was incredible, though. Still is. I wish Naughty Dog would come back to the series.

[–]ZeepaAan 3 points4 points ago

If I remember correctly, a good way to beat that was to punch and use the scatter gun and just repeat until you were through.

[–]EazyHB 2 points3 points ago

I wanted to kill somebody in real life anytime I lost in that mission.

[–]Thom0 0 points1 point ago

Fuck that mission, If I couldn't use Dark Jak I dont think I could of beaten it.

[–]blabbers10 11 points12 points ago

At least there were none of these

[–]TheCrispyNinka 5 points6 points ago

DUDE FUCK THOSE THINGS OH MY GOD

[–]bigfishh 1 point2 points ago

Wait ... maybe you mean just THIS fish, but I'm fairly sure that these fishes existed in j&d2 too. :)

[–]Eldryce 1 point2 points ago

My cousin, to this day, is terrified of water in video games because of this fish.

[–]Dominus-Temporis 1 point2 points ago

No, you just automatically got shot and died for falling in water.

[–]Toastfighter 1 point2 points ago

That and the fucking eel from Mario 64 are why I hate water.

[–]BearJ00 24 points25 points ago

i know that feel man

[–]emsowns 16 points17 points ago

Jak and Daxter: Precursor Legacy - Oh this is cool, and that, and those.

Jak II - FUCK SHIT FUCKING FUCK THIS DOCK LEVEL!

Jak III - What the hell is going on? Oh I'm supposed to race now?

[–]megajak 13 points14 points ago

I remember thinking that Jak 3 did wasteland racing and fighting way better than Rage while I was playing it recently. graphics were nothing compared to Rage but it was loads more fun.

[–]MrIste 2 points3 points ago

That's because Jak 3 had much more open environments for your vehicles. I didn't play too much of Rage, but all of the driving areas just felt like regular roads.

[–]thomasowns 16 points17 points ago

I suddenly want to play the entire jak series again.

any love for Jak X combat racing anyone?

[–]Will_billy 4 points5 points ago

Yesss, that is still my favorite racing game ever

That mission where your weapons crapped out was freaking hard

[–]Eldryce 2 points3 points ago

Jak X was actually really good. Not as good as the predecessors, and obviously a completely different style of game, but I still play it sometimes.

[–]CookedPork 7 points8 points ago

I only found one part difficult.

"No Sig, stop running into their attacks. I can't protect you if you keep running out there. SIG STOP IT! I SWEAR TO GOD! Know what? Fuck it, I'll go down there beat their asses and the let Sig come down and do his th- oh, he died..."

[–]rubelmj 12 points13 points ago

If Sig wasn't voiced by Phil LaMarr I would've gotten tired of his shit in that mission.

[–]CookedPork 0 points1 point ago

...I just remembered, he IS voiced by Phil LaMarr...

[–]Flukie 10 points11 points ago

I was fairly young when I got this and I beat it without too much hassle, hell I even got all the orbs, on this and Jak 3.

I was a Jak o maniac.

Same went for R+C, new game +'ed the shit out of that.

[–]Solisau 7 points8 points ago

The mission where you had to go and do the pick-up and drop off of the informants or whatever for the Syndicate... That and escorting Samos were easily the hardest parts of the game for me... I felt like a god when I finished it.

[–]FishBonePendant 0 points1 point ago

That thing at the end with the ballon? FUCK THAT

[–]Philthey 3 points4 points ago

It's been about seven years since I last played it, so this might be fuzzy: The mission that made me quit was the one where you had to blow up five hoverships, or something to that degree. I could always destroy two or three, but never all five.

[–]omegazero99 1 point2 points ago

That mission made me quit playing the game for months. It was so hard because you pretty much had to run away after killing each one, leading to the player slowly losing health with each run.

[–]FishBonePendant 0 points1 point ago

Really? I found the best thing was to hurry and kill the first two hellcats as fast as possible with the vulcan barrel and then red gun your way to safety. (Protip, hiding under a house in the docks is a garunteed way to ditch the KG)

Then slowly picking up more ammo while searching for one of three seater rides. You can start shooting down the hellcat until your ride gets pretty beat up then charde the hellcat and jump off. If your ride is damaged enough it'll blow up the hellcat.

[–]LarryTheSatelliteGuy 5 points6 points ago

Oh i used to love that fucking game, I would give my little brother the 2nd player controller and tell him that he was daxter. It took him until the 3rd game to figure out he wasn't controlling anyone.

[–]AndyDaGhost 1 point2 points ago

I DID THIS ALL THE TIME OMG, and same with Clank on Ratchet and Clank.

[–]BananaPeelPants 5 points6 points ago

I wouldn't call the game hard, my beef with it is evil checkpoints.

I remember having to repeat large sections because of one problematic bit later on, and last time I played before the final ragequit I started a tough mission but it autosaved to its beginning, basically forcing me to complete the mission or to go to hell.

[–]mashakosha 3 points4 points ago

This. This was the single most frustrating part of the game, its god-awful checkpoints. The amount of times I just dropped my controller and stared at the screen intently, damning it to hell for the absurdity of the tasks it asked us to do in one go. Also, minimal health pickups, which REALLY annoyed me. Every crate was a ray of hope, smashed when you cracked it open to find yet more scattergun ammo...

[–]Pypogaming 9 points10 points ago

never played Jak was more of a ratchet and Clank kind of guy.

[–]rubelmj 12 points13 points ago

They tend to get lumped together because they're both Playstation shooting platformers and Naughty Dog and Insomniac have a mutual respect for each other. Hard to go wrong with either one, honestly.

[–]Commisioner_Freeman 7 points8 points ago

Also the R&C series (at least the PS2 ones) were built on a modded version of the original J&D game engine.

[–]Fornlek 3 points4 points ago

Not to mention there are billboards of R+C in the Jak games and vice versa.

[–]tehgama95 1 point2 points ago

Im pretty sure in one of the ratchet games, there is a painting of Daxter in his apartment. Found it.

[–]Beavers_Build 3 points4 points ago

I was not prepared for you to be so right.

[–]synthesezia 3 points4 points ago

There was a part outside of the city which was up a huge cliff straight out the door, one mission had you defending a landing zone or something against a load of enemies. I remember that part being really bad.

[–]ThatGuyNamedRy 3 points4 points ago

Anything related to racing or the jet board made me cry girly tears.

[–]FishBonePendant 0 points1 point ago

Once you learned how to use the shortcuts in the speeder races you could beat them in one or two tries

[–]ThatRedHairedGirl 4 points5 points ago

I remember me and my friend playing this when we were in like middle school or something. Good times.

[–]CoriJane 4 points5 points ago

I was able to beat the vanilla game eventually, but I still haven't beat hero mode, the tanker mission is just impossible.

[–]MontanaTrev 4 points5 points ago

They should do a new Jak for PS3. unless they are already and I haven't heard of it yet.

[–]Csquared87 1 point2 points ago

I think Naughty Dog has said they would like to, but they don't have the resources to do both Jack & the Uncharted series. I was kinda disappointed by that- I would definitively play a new J&D game over a new uncharted.

[–]flower1988 5 points6 points ago

The driving around town drove me crazy the most(cars seemed useless in missions). but now that i am older I want to retry to see if i am any better :/

/Fuck i want a ps2 >_>

[–]TheCro 2 points3 points ago

They had some fucked up checkpoints too.

[–]Taconomicon 11 points12 points ago

Sure this one was tough, but it was worth the trouble. By far, the Jak and Daxter series is my favorite. So many awesome memories.

[–]EndlessMajority 8 points9 points ago

The third one didn't really live up to the difficulty of its predecessor.

[–]roushimsx 16 points17 points ago

But it was a substantially better game than the second

[–]rubelmj 11 points12 points ago

Jak 3 had better gameplay balance in terms or both difficulty and variety, and less pointless back and forth between missions. Jak II was so radically different from anything Naughty Dog had done that they were bound to make a few slight missteps. I feel Jak II represents a turning point for them and is the middle ground between Crash Bandicoot and Uncharted.

[–]roushimsx 5 points6 points ago

I don't see it as a linear evolution really. Crash was a straightforward platformer with little ability to explore. Jak added an exploration element, while Jak II added vehicles, restructured to a hub city design, and shooting mechanics. Jak 3 reworked the driving, changed from a city hub back to an open world.

Uncharted moves back towards Crash's linearity while advancing the shooting to incorporate cover mechanics and the ability to actually aim on the y axis. Granted, the encounter design and cover system of Uncharted were rudimentary and broken, but the story, characters, and graphics were executed well enough to help gloss over that. Uncharted 2 was to Uncharted what Jak 3 was to Jak II.

I do like how they've expanded their horizons and continued to grow in different directions, but their initial stabs at incorporating new ideas always seem to be seriously flawed. In Jak II's case, the paper thin script and immensely unlikeable main character hampered the game and only made its core flaws more evident.

[–]theresistor 5 points6 points ago

In Jak II's case, the paper thin script and immensely unlikeable main character hampered the game and only made its core flaws more evident.

I actually like Jak II's plot much more than Jak 3. The former clicked for me, while the latter really felt tacked on.

[–]WindSandStars 4 points5 points ago

2 wasn't difficult, just frustrating.

[–]Ozzertron -1 points0 points ago

They never do, do they.

[–]ACardAttack 2 points3 points ago

I agree, I got to a race through the city or something, twice, and I could not beat that race and gave up :-(

[–]NixFinn 3 points4 points ago

Ah, Jak II one of my favorite games ever. Still hoping for a new chapter in the Jak series (Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier does NOT exist in my universe!)

Edit: Am I the only one here who played through the whole game in one sitting the first time I played it?

[–]mashakosha 2 points3 points ago

Second. TLF doesn't exist. Everyone I know doesn't consider it canon in any way, shape or form. I could write an entirely new post about what was wrong with it, but I won't bore everyone with what is already known.

[–]ragingpuck 1 point2 points ago

Part of me still wishes JakII was Jak and Daxter II: Sans weapons

[–]pantless_pirate 2 points3 points ago

This is an extremely underrated game series. Great story line, awesome game play, and always some new in each game to keep you interested. I don't know if you've played Jak 3 yet but prepare to have your mind blown at the end!

[–]TheRoboPenguin 2 points3 points ago

I never made it past the part of the game where you have to go hunt down the invisible baddies in the forest.

[–]yoryan 2 points3 points ago

The problem with this game is the difficulty spikes in the most random moments. You could be doing a mission that a blind person could do and then bam! you're spending a hour or two doing that hoverboard race through the city. I will never replay this game because of that mission or the one mission at the slums where you have to survive wave after wave of police enemies.

[–]Aliienate 2 points3 points ago

there's that one fucking mission where you are daxter and you need to pacman the shit out of these weird node things... holy FUCK i raged so hard i broke 4 controllers. does anyone remember this level?

[–]makinglunch 1 point2 points ago

neither was i my friend, neither was i

[–]GentlemanPunk 1 point2 points ago

I 'spose it was heard at times, but I don't think it was that hard.

[–]TheGowans 0 points1 point ago

One of my favourite games from when I was a kid, think it was only a few choice missions that were particularly hard though :/

[–]PeaceSentinel 0 points1 point ago

I love the part where you have to defend young Sage in the forest. I can't remember all the hard parts of this game but I remember the Baron Praxis boss and the Kor boss. Shit was awesome.

[–]NotNorthD 0 points1 point ago

I don't know why....but I was terrible at the swoop bike races.....

[–]sfpballer11 0 points1 point ago

I used to always run out of ammo. I beat the original Jak and Jak 3 with no problem , but damn Jak 2 took me forever.

[–]BrotherBrah 0 points1 point ago

I played it a year or two ago. I didn't find it too hard, but there was one part I had to use an exploit to beat. You're on some walkways over water in the city, and army guys are dropping form ships -everywhere-. You try to get through them as they shoot at you from every angle.

Protip: Gather Dark Power and smash the turret in the water that should technically prevent you from swimming away.

[–]Sir_Newty_Newt 0 points1 point ago

Running around the fortress thing with the viewpoint of the security tank was a killer. Especially as it was instant kill...

[–]Beanbaker 1 point2 points ago

What? I remember beating this game a lot of times. I loved the Jak&Daxter series and never really had an issue with the difficulty. Then again, I wasn't a really intense gamer then and would only play for around an hour at a time. Oh, when I would go outside. Heh

[–]boonie_redditor 1 point2 points ago

Only have one good hand... ragequit this thing after first little tank thingy in first area, cuz I couldn't get past it using just one hand on the controller. (Partial) hemiplegia sucks. Was fun up to that tho.

[–]Shiningthumb 1 point2 points ago

THAT FUCKING DOCK LEVEL!Oh i can feel my young rage seeping back to me.

[–]jackolantern_ 0 points1 point ago

Its fun though

[–]krakow13 1 point2 points ago

I hate racers. I really dislike racing games. I can slice, dice, and shoot competently in most games, but give me a racing game and all I see are game over screens. In fact, put a racing game in my hand and it pretty much spontaneously combusts on contact.

So while I loved the first two thirds of Jak II, the part of the game where I have to race through the city, following a preset path, with only a slight margin for error, has made me step way from the game for more than 7 years after I first started playing it. Anything else in the game I could easily handle, but that damn racing segment...

[–]Buttroses 1 point2 points ago

This right here was my first GTA game.

[–]MrIste 2 points3 points ago

I think that's one of the reasons for its popularity. When people were too young to play Grand Theft Auto because of the prostitutes and violence, they went to Jak instead and got a similar experience.

[–]Buttroses 2 points3 points ago

Yeah that's how I felt playing it, but I really did like the actual storyline as well.

[–]DyckJustice 0 points1 point ago

This was my first ps2 game, and I didn't really know any better in terms of difficulty. I played it through multiple times but my first play through took me a couple months if I remember correctly. To this day it is one of my favourite games.

[–]BubblegumBalloon 0 points1 point ago

Really? I found the game pretty easy for the most part. The only mission I found hard was the onrails turret mission.

[–]Rixxer 0 points1 point ago

Dammit you guys, now I want to play this game again... I don't have it or my PS2 anymore, is there some other way to play it?

[–]lolslowking 0 points1 point ago

I beat this game when I was 9 or 10. Was it really that hard? I don't remember having that much trouble with it. The hoverboard tricks were hard for me though, that I remember.

[–]demonboya 0 points1 point ago

For me it was the combination of the dock, and then you have to do the metal head smash mini game that took forever and was impossible. I was overjoyed when I finally beat that part.

[–]sorrowfulsnowleopard 1 point2 points ago

The metal head smash game was the best. It got to a point when I had a copy of the game that I'd come back to it JUST to play that mini game and try to beat my high score.

[–]FrenchSilkPieIsYummy 0 points1 point ago

It took me quite a while to beat at the time and I definitely got stuck a few times but I had no idea everyone else was struggling.

my childhood GTA.

[–]SlayerDudeMan 0 points1 point ago

I didn't even know how difficult this game was for some people since I managed to complete it quite a number of times.

[–]mxraider2000 0 points1 point ago

that one mission half way through the game that was after you got the dark power in the hut....EVERYBODY IN THE ENEMIES BASE just has to be waiting for you....so many game over screens.....too many

[–]jake239 0 points1 point ago

I forget what your supposed to be doing in this one mission but you have to deliver a package across town or something and it's painfully impossible.

[–]iiSaviour 0 points1 point ago

On a side note, /r/jakanddaxter

[–]Chanzlyn 0 points1 point ago

I remember playing this game when it first came out and my brother and I had a blast. I just got the HD remastered edition and started playing again and I was going 'HOLY SHIT, WHY CAN'T I DO THIS? WHAT IS GOING ON? OH MAN, HOW THE FUCK AM I SUPPOSED TO DO THAT?"

It is insane how some of the missions are just a bit too difficult but I eventually beat it. Jak and Daxter 1-3 is hands down one of my favorite games, ever.

[–]WaffleKnight-Xtreme 0 points1 point ago

I thought i was a good driver, but then i played Jak II.

[–]Bobtailedreaper 1 point2 points ago

Best game series in the history of man. Back when video games were all about the fun not realism. Didn't really find this game that hard even as a child.

[–]Tsunami3000 0 points1 point ago

Honestly the only hard part was the final boss, where i used up all of the blue bullet machine gun rounds and accidentally fell into the pit for the killing blow. then had to restart with the single fucking shot yellow bullets only. as i ran out i had to finish him with the red shotgun like rounds. i feel badass for being in 4th grade beating it.

why are the new generation of gamers so shitty? i was stomping people at mario kart when i was 4, and my stepsister cant even beat the first boss in sonic 2....shes 10

[–]Punkster110 1 point2 points ago

No one was ready.

[–]Fautlen 0 points1 point ago

Absolutely LOVED this game! I played that thing to death and back when I was in middle school and high school.

I will say that the difficulty curve in the game was a bit on the wonky side. I remember spending the better part of an afternoon trying to get past a part where Jak fights his way out of the docks in the slums. Crimson Guard where everywhere with guns and flying bikes and jet packs. By the way Jak can only take 4 hits.

Have fun with that.

Still a great game.

[–]tittyfister69 0 points1 point ago

I remember years ago, my brother and I would take turns playing certain missions. Chances were if one of us failed, the other could manage to get through it relatively easily. We did this method with a couple games. But this was the only game that caused us both to ragequit so hard.

[–]ElmoTheNefarious 0 points1 point ago

A lot of people are mentioning the mission on the docks right after you get the Vulcan Fury...am I the only one who had no trouble with that mission? I actually kinda loved it. The trick is to have absolutely no hesitation, just go full Rambo if anyone so much as breathes at you, then move quickly. Takes a few tries, but I honestly enjoyed it.

The missions that got me to ragequit...Orim's test where you have to hit the symbols got me to give up for a bit, but now I don't have much trouble. Ragequit once or twice in the first fight with Praxis because I kept accidentally rolling off the roof. Definitely had trouble with the races, but can I just take a minute to say that the racing AI was incredibly good? Also the last boss fight with the Metal Head Leader was tough, as it should be. Beating that game felt triumphant.

But seriously, the racing AI...if you raced it on the highest difficulty it would use certain shortcuts it wouldn't use on lower difficulties. But if you went to a lower difficulty and used one of those shortcuts, the next time around it would use it too. That impressed the fuck out of me.

[–]LiveChaz 0 points1 point ago

I gave gallons of blood, sweat, and tears in order to beat this game as a ten year old.

[–]RFswitchBlade 1 point2 points ago

I was not prepared for anything in this game, it was so different than the first.

[–]Mahagna 0 points1 point ago

I don't think the game is really that difficult. But... the checkpoints are fucking horrible, usually forcing you to repeat a whole level.

[–]Walrusjim 0 points1 point ago

I had to glitch into this ditch thingy to beat the final boss.

[–]9r3y 0 points1 point ago

This game was awesome. Felt epic beating it.

[–]authentic_trust_me 0 points1 point ago

It was one of my most memorable PS2 games, and while it was harder than JakI, it wasn't that hard...considering how much of an idiot I am.

[–]wheat64 0 points1 point ago

I beat this game but Its hard for me to remember the difficulty of it....dunno.

[–]neveragain1337 0 points1 point ago

The only thing i ever did in this game was steal cops' hovercrafts and fly around shooting people.

[–]sportsfreak1034 0 points1 point ago

After reading the comments, I feel much better about beating this game

[–]Whywipe 0 points1 point ago

The only reason I didn't beat this game was because the last level scared me.

[–]Sea-Salt 1 point2 points ago

My playthrough of that ended when I couldn't get past this one timed mission. Think it was about getting to the coliseum in less than 3 minutes? Yeah, good luck getting progress when cops are all over and want to execute your ass for tapping them.

[–]Andinator 0 points1 point ago

Got the hd collection. Game was great but man the handeling of the vehicles was just awful.

[–]CrypticPhantasma 0 points1 point ago

Really fun games. I beat Jak 2 and 3, but not the original.

[–]bfmGrack 0 points1 point ago

....... I beat this game as a kid.... I don't remember it being THAT bad.... I remember a mission with daxter on a fucking missile, or was that jak3? P.S. Are there any emulators that play this game? I really want to play it again

[–]bigfishh 0 points1 point ago

I never actually finished J&D1, but two appeared to be easy for me. Probably due to the radar code that kept telling me what to do, I kind of got bored at J&D1 because I often never knew what to do. My favorite is surprisingly J&D3 though. 2 was pretty fucking amazing, but I like how it all kept going! :)

EDIT: And I FUCKING HATE the fact that these j&d games just won't work on ps emulators. :( I do not own a ps2 anymore.

[–]unitedporcupines 0 points1 point ago

I remember when I first played this game there were certainly some difficult missions, including the mission where you have to shoot down 5 new hellcats, fighting your way out of the slums against wave after wave of guards, shooting down all the flying guards on the rail shooter section, racing Erol in the city before the last race, escorting the sages and the time machine in front of the stadium, and especially the final boss. I guess the fact that I recently replayed it shows how good the game is despite it's difficulty

[–]BillyBobber23 0 points1 point ago

The game was but what bothered me the most was the amount of checkpoints per level

[–]dannimann 0 points1 point ago

It may look like there's 8, but in reality you only get 4 hitpoints.

[–]Lily247 1 point2 points ago

The only reason I want a PS3 is to get the HD collection.

God this trilogy is fucking great. So many memories of playing and watching my brother play. (And the awesome decision of my brother to play Jak 3 before Jak II) xD

[–]Titan67 0 points1 point ago

All of this is making me remember the state of disbelief I had when I finished this,"Wait its over? Did I really just beat it? OH GOD YES!!!!" Went through three "I'm done with this crap" quits, one little cousin deleting the save when about halfway done, and the perpetual feeling of games today,"This is too easy."

[–]Andrew0085 0 points1 point ago

I never got past the part where you first get the blue gun, or something like that. It's been a while.

[–]spongemonster 0 points1 point ago

Still not as hard as Shinobi.

[–]AcidCH 0 points1 point ago

What? I finished this when I was 8. Was one of my childhood classics but I dont remember it being hard...

[–]lamer5799 0 points1 point ago

I miss these games. I had jack and jack2 until about 3-4 years when we moved and lost them. They where fun as all hell

[–]PLestad 0 points1 point ago

Strange, I never had problems with this game. Completed it twice or so with some dificulty in some areas but overal a casual game.

[–]JizzCreek 0 points1 point ago

This was my favorite game when I was 10 years old. It made my childhood. I have no memories of difficulty being a problem, which is odd, because I kind of suck at video games in general.

[–]Verx 0 points1 point ago

ahh my childhood :)

[–]baconbytes 0 points1 point ago

Shit man, that first boss where the guy throws fire tornadoes at you? Nightmares. Also, that one timed mission where you have to race from one side of the city to the guy's house in like, 2 minutes? ARGH.

[–]anonymouscookie 0 points1 point ago

Oh my god, I remember how epic it was when I finally unlocked the hoverboard to use whenever. Never thought it would happen, and when it did my friend and I started yelling about how awesome this game was.

[–]Biub_Pocket_Tanks 0 points1 point ago

This was my very first Playstation 2 game, and the first platformer I'd ever played. I played it and beat it, only afterwards hearing about how hard it was. Hearing about how difficult it was, how people would rage quit... man, felt good to know that I was actually good at something, even if it was something as silly as this video game.

[–]Reeeeeen 0 points1 point ago

Is it because of the vehicles that handle like a turd with wet paper wings?

I just finished the collection and the driving parts of 2 were my most hated.

Loved everything else

[–]jaketheripper66 0 points1 point ago

It was hard as fuck when it came out(I was young), but I'm replaying it now and it isn't terrible. Then again, I got the platinum trophy on Dark Souls. I don't find many things hard now.

[–]mike0698 0 points1 point ago

I was in second grade when that game came out and the only think I remember being hard was when you had to beat the clock trying to get to one part of the city early on in the game.

[–]JediDalek 0 points1 point ago

It was the hardest game ever on my first run. Now I could practically finish it in my sleep. That section where you have to fight your way out of the docks area remains forever maddening, though. Haha.

[–]thor0711 0 points1 point ago

Best game of my teenage years.

[–]x_zer0_x 0 points1 point ago

Some of those driving sequences are pretty rage inducing.

[–]SuperBeast4721 0 points1 point ago

Comment about hoverbike missions.

[–]VGPowerlord -1 points0 points ago

After playing Jak and Daxter... I was not prepared for how crappy Jak II was.

[–]MorningForest 0 points1 point ago

I had to buy a strategy guide -.-. Gun fight in the slums, you know what i'm talking about.

[–]warthog15 0 points1 point ago

I remember yelling at this countless times, "What's your problem with checkpoints Naughty Dog!?!?!?!"
