When the gif loads slower than the video consider it a failure.

[–]IZIEGY 7 points8 points ago

Thanks, I'm only on ADSL2+ and I don't want to sit here all night waiting for it to buffer. Cheers.

YT comment:

Does it hurt being stupid?

:D

[–]TanHuns45 113 points114 points ago

Am I the only one who wants to try this?

[–]katffro 79 points80 points ago

Make sure you use hydrogen, not helium! Helium's non-flammable.

[–]HoradricNoob 98 points99 points ago

What part of that aren't you getting, exactly?

[–]EndlessMajority 79 points80 points ago

Well obviously the core concept!

[–]ArsonParty 97 points98 points ago

[–]Minotaur_in_house 24 points25 points ago

I wonder why someone named Arsonparty is encouraging this form of science.

[–]ArsonParty 120 points121 points ago

[–]WombatDominator 22 points23 points ago

Brilliant followup.

[–]SanchoPandas 28 points29 points ago

2/2 very nice.

[–]orthag 2 points3 points ago

That child is planning something. It's probably murder.

[–]christianbrowny 0 points1 point ago

it took me way longer than i expected to find this

Oh god.

My sides, they're moving on their own!

[–]jtroeh00 19 points20 points ago

For the last time, the Excelsior is filled with non-flamable helium!!!!

[–]Stig101 15 points16 points ago

Why would anyone put a bomb on that thing? All you need is a static-y sweater and... Boom!

[–]fearofthesky 2 points3 points ago

I love that I get this comment thread. Don't know why it took me so long to watch the damn show!

[–]poorat -1 points0 points ago

Lana

[–]Grizeldabowski -1 points0 points ago

My boyfriend and I have only just started watching it. We're wondering that very thing.

[–]Xemeriba 0 points1 point ago

I feel silly but... Which show?

[–]Grizeldabowski 3 points4 points ago

Archer.

[–]scootter82 -1 points0 points ago

It's an airship!

But you can make your own hydrogen at home for (kind of) free with a battery and bucket of water.

[–]Melloverture 2 points3 points ago

whaaat? Details?

[–]K3TtLek0Rn 3 points4 points ago

Lol. Chemistry. Hydrolysis.

[–]power_of_friendship 1 point2 points ago

When you run a charge through water, (basically) you separate the oxygen and hydrogen in a process called hydrolysis.

Bubbles will form in the water that are fairly flammable (it's oxygen and hydrogen)

[–]vintermann 0 points1 point ago

I've heard that hydrogen fires are less dangerous (relatively speaking) than hydrocarbon fires, for some reason. Maybe to do with heat radiation and convection? More than half the passengers on the Hindenburg survived, anyway.

Probably not a good idea, still. Either way.

[–]zqwefty 0 points1 point ago

I'd assume hydrogen fires aren't as dangerous because hydrogen is so much lighter than air, so the flame goes up instead of out and dissipates rather quickly.

But i don't actually know for sure, just a hypothesis.

[–]Sean1708 0 points1 point ago

I think it's because it burns so quickly, there's a lot of power but not a lot of total energy. I could also be completely wrong.

[–]SchroedingersHat 1 point2 points ago

More energy per mass (the H bonding to O2 (and C to O2) is where a large portion of your energy comes from, by using H2 you cut out the energy needed to break the various bonds in the organic molecule), but it's much less dense, so I'd say lack of energy per volume is what makes it safer?

[–]prosnoozer 0 points1 point ago

No soot as well, the only product is water.

[–]acespace 26 points27 points ago

WARNInG: this is all dangerous and stupid and is for educational and nonpractical uses only. Don't do it. I am not responsible for anyone who does, whether succesfully or less so.

Did this recently. Get a glass jar and a large plastic juice bottle. Surgical tubing from glass jar into juice bottle then another out the top of the juice bottle. Fill juice bottle with ice and water until its above the level of the tube coming from the glass jar. Fill glass jar with aluminum and The Works or anything else that has large amounts HCL. Put balloon over the exit tube on the juice bottle. You now have a hydrogen balloon.

Here is a pic of my setup. Ocean spray bottle and jar of Borscht worked great :)

WARNING: DO THIS IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA AND KEEP AWAY FROM FLAME

[–]KennyLoggnsDngrZone 17 points18 points ago

I'm on to you, Mr. White.

[–]orangefly 5 points6 points ago

we have been doing fucked up shit for 5 years....CALL ME WALTER....!!!....

[–]KennyLoggnsDngrZone 4 points5 points ago

Alright, yo.

[–]Pienix 2 points3 points ago

bitch

[–]Kaldeth -2 points-1 points ago

LO.

[–]furbiesandbeans 5 points6 points ago

It's actually only been 1 year in the show...

/melvin

[–]IanCal 2 points3 points ago

Or you could use electrolysis, and not have to use HCL.

[–]Carbon_Dirt 1 point2 points ago

I've tried that, I can never manage to trap the hydrogen that well though. I mean I'm only using 9V batteries routed with plated radio shack wire, so obviously I don't have the most industrious setup, but still. This setup seems easier, since Hydrogen is the only gas really being released in the mix so you don't have to separate them.

[–]iRaqTV 2 points3 points ago

Nice, looks like a portable meth lab.

[–]Kuusou 0 points1 point ago

You could also, just put works, and aluminum, in a plastic bottle, and throw it. It will explode.

Just like you have it there, I fill the works up to the top of the aluminum. But we did a lot of small balls, that worked best.

Very fun.

[–]zqwefty 0 points1 point ago

I do this from time to time. Also somewhat fun to leave the cap off and just watch the reaction sometimes.

[–]friedrice5005 1 point2 points ago

You should make a whole series of posts about how to do chemistry with shitty equipment. For some reason I find it hilarious that you built a gas extractor out of an old juice jug and a jelly jar.

[–]mackpack 3 points4 points ago

Inflammable means flammable?

[–]dirtydan 0 points1 point ago

What a country!

[–]Dstanding -1 points0 points ago

What the fuck, English.

[–]i_forget_my_userids 0 points1 point ago

You know... like when you have inflammation in your body... think like that.

Non-flammable is the word you wanna use.

[–]mackpack 0 points1 point ago

It's a Simpsons quote.

[–]i_forget_my_userids 2 points3 points ago

You're a Simpson's quote.

[–]Mad_Hatt3r 0 points1 point ago

That's unpossible.

[–]dabezian 4 points5 points ago

But helium is so fun

[–]maxxusflamus 5 points6 points ago

this is probably natural gas or propane. Usually hydrogen doesn't burn brightly like this.

[–]dj_picasso 3 points4 points ago

Hydrogen also doesn't make a bright yellow fireball when it explodes.

[–]Ezekyuhl 2 points3 points ago

Tell that to the Hindenburg!*

(Smarmy comments aside, I always thought it blew up- like huge explosion like, appears not.)

*After seeing how deep the rabbit hole that is YouTube goes,watching-several-airship-videos-andeventually-realizing-I-had-made-it-to-the-60's-and-space, it appears that the yellow flames of the Hindenburg incident are due to the fabric burning.

[–]edman007 0 points1 point ago

Or butane from the lighter in his hand.

[–]FreaksNGeeks 1 point2 points ago

Nonflammable, infammable, and unflammable, why are there three? - George Carlin

[–]Carbon_Dirt 0 points1 point ago

I find this comment infappable.

No, but outside and letting go of it. Backwards flying, firebreathing Dragon!

[–]You_Only_Live_Once 38 points39 points ago

WHY WOULD ANYONE DO THAT INSIDE?!

[–]ac3jc 28 points29 points ago

thats what she said

[–]Humble_Link_Guy 21 points22 points ago

[–]thesoupiest 11 points12 points ago

This made my butthole impulsively tighten. I think I subconsciously imagined fire spewing from it.

Well, shit. Now I'm just consciously imagining it...

ouch

[–]as_to_set_you_free 4 points5 points ago

oh internet. sigh

[–]jsting 0 points1 point ago

I ate some really spicy jerked chicken last night and this morning was unpleasant

Literally blew up in your face.

[–]SgtSausage 13 points14 points ago

Ohhhh the humanity ....

[–]SupermanV2 22 points23 points ago

I like how he keeps going to stick his face in it. Brave man. Stupid, but brave.

'Bravery is by far the kindest word for stupidity, don't you think?' -Mycroft

[–]hnrqoliv182 1 point2 points ago

  • michael scott

[–]angryfinger 4 points5 points ago

I believe he was trying to blow it out not stick his face in it.

[–]I_am_not_novel 5 points6 points ago

Somebody didn't learn from Hindenburg. Silly Germans.

[–]DirtbagAvenger 2 points3 points ago

Did he died?

[–]EchoSolo[S] 1 point2 points ago

He lived-ed.

[–]AllDay8517 5 points6 points ago

I want to know what he was trying to do?

[–]NonPermissive 17 points18 points ago

He's trying to play with fire.

edit: to answer your question more thoroughly, he filled a balloon with butane or some other gas.

[–]bradleyg5 2 points3 points ago

I believe he's just trying to ignite the gas that flowing out the balloon, but when he goes to light it he sets the balloon plastic on fire as well. he's trying to blow it out but eventually the plastic melts, burns his finger, releases the tip, boom.

[–]NYRfan30 2 points3 points ago

Because putting methane in a balloon and lighting it on fire is the best idea.

[–]WazWaz 2 points3 points ago

Well what do you do with your farts?

[–]EchoSolo[S] 0 points1 point ago

I save mine in a jar and deposit them in the bank.

[–]fawker 0 points1 point ago

I could have watched the actual video 5-10 times while waiting for that to load.

I don't know why people front page this shit.

[–]Jackofhearts94 3 points4 points ago

SCIENCE BITCH.

[–]shortsack 2 points3 points ago

dammnit, jesse

[–]Ryuko 5 points6 points ago

His reaction is quite explosive.

[–]ac3jc 0 points1 point ago

he is having a blast

[–]ghostface134 3 points4 points ago

[–]RexVesica 1 point2 points ago

His experiment really was quite the bomb.

[–]Chutes123 0 points1 point ago

It seems like it really backfired though.

[–]blitzkriegpunk 3 points4 points ago

Looks like Kevin Rose.

[–]singletWarrior 0 points1 point ago

choke the snake damnit...

[–]th1nker 1 point2 points ago

I have to see the source video for this gif. All gifs have videos, don't they?

[–]EchoSolo[S] 1 point2 points ago

I'll try my best to find that today!

[–]SgtMac02 1 point2 points ago

[–]SgtMac02 1 point2 points ago

[–]sirukin 0 points1 point ago

I suggest using a ceramic nozzle to keep the heat from melting the balloon.

[–]Demonix_Fox 0 points1 point ago

I applaud him for keeping his cool after the end caught on fire.

[–]signious 0 points1 point ago

yah, playing with acetylene is a great idea

[–]angryfinger 0 points1 point ago

Does anyone have the video of this? Was he actually hurt or was it so fast that it just singed some hairs or something?

[–]MisinterpretingJokes 1 point2 points ago

Correct Maneuver: Twist the opening to stop the flow of gas, let gas out through a window once fire dies down.

[–]imperfcet 0 points1 point ago

I think that the balloon skin caught fire and it was all downhill from there.

[–]DrButtons 0 points1 point ago

My life in a .gif

[–]BigDogSmallCar 0 points1 point ago

Every time you think you've got something great it blows up in your face? Meet Zuko.

[–]Niqulaz 0 points1 point ago

Well that escalated... actually, that escalated pretty much exactly according to my expectations.

[–]El_Dumfuco 0 points1 point ago

Gif name spoiled it...

[–]adam_anarchist 0 points1 point ago

who reads link names when on r/funny

[–]El_Dumfuco 0 points1 point ago

Was on front page. Besides, my focus just slipped, so I didn't deliberately read it. It was inevitable

[–]Max_Groinpunch 0 points1 point ago

There's nothing better than to begin one's day watching a moron blow himself up. Wonder if his eyebrows have returned?

[–]tonyh322 1 point2 points ago

...it blows up! 1300 karma!

[–]MirthSpindle 0 points1 point ago

I like how he bounces back.

[–]Ross_is_Sauce 1 point2 points ago

Everytime I see a .gif involving fire on reddit I think to myself, that's about to explode in their face.

[–]sumraunchysmell 0 points1 point ago

yes

[–]EchoSolo[S] 0 points1 point ago

Up voting all puns!

[–]lBlackFishl 0 points1 point ago

As I was watching this I was kind of like, "Didn't we do that in high school? No.... it was something similar... I think the balloon is supposed to..." And then BAM! Comedic timing.

[–]Slingray120 0 points1 point ago

Story of my life, man. It always blows up in your face just when you think it's going your way.

[–]gr33nss 0 points1 point ago

No joke on the fourth of July I attempted something similar to this except in my intoxicated state of mind I though it would be a good idea to tie the propane balloon and ignite it with a lighter and can of axe. I ended up burning off half the hair on my right arm, my beard, and I had to get a hair cut because it was singed.

[–]bonnielovesclyde -1 points0 points ago

Science: It's not for everyone.

[–]EchoSolo[S] 0 points1 point ago

Wow! That really blew up unexpectedly! Thanks y'all.
