My dad's going back to college after 30 years to earn a masters in ee. He says it's one of the best choices that he's ever made.

[–]RandomPratt 10 points11 points ago

As someone who went back to University 15 years after dropping out do a Masters and who is now lecturing at that very same University, I can concur that your father has, in fact, made an excellent choice.

[–]zen_nudist 2 points3 points ago

I suppose you finished your Bachelors before starting the Masters, right?

[–]RandomPratt 16 points17 points ago

Actually, I didn't.

I was accepted into the Masters program on the basis of my work history - 15 years' experience in the field that I was working towards getting a qualification for, as I was finding it all but impossible to move up the ladder without a qualification - and didn't fancy spending 8 years (part-time) getting a communications degree that would be obsolete by the time I was done.

so I spent 1 year working full time and going to uni at night, three nights a week, while helping my wife look after our brand-new child. it was very hard work, but we all got through it and now I'm a lecturer (part time), while working full time in another part of the university, applying the postgraduate skills I teach (and was taught) through my degree.

I'm as busy (if not busier) than when I was studying, but it's been a huge boost to my career - I'm looking at starting a Doctorate in the new year, and moving full time into academia.

not bad for someone who dropped out of university aged 24.

[–]helloryan 1 point2 points ago

Mad props to whomever can support a family, work, and go back to school part-time simultaneously. I was always amazed at some of my classmates who had a schedule similar to this

[–]RandomPratt 1 point2 points ago

thanks... but, really, anyone can do it.

plan out a schedule, make sure there's enough time in it for your family, and be prepared to give up a few things that you've probably been wasting your time with.

I was amazed by them as well. We had one woman who was married with three kids, and worked in her old job part-time. She never missed a class, and was one of the best in the class. We found out later on that her youngest was four months old, and she decided to do it on unpaid maternity leave.

Stopped everyone bitching about having a ten a.m. class- she'd already done a full days work and the grocery shopping. Boy were we grateful.

[–]zen_nudist 1 point2 points ago

Kudos to you, man. Congratulations and good luck.

[–]morto00x 4 points5 points ago

The cool thing about EE is that the master's is actually easier than the bachelor's. Mostly because you can focus on learning what you actually like and find relevant, rather than trying to understand all the branches in EE (robotics, hardware, power, RF, etc) at the same time.

[–]frbastiat 0 points1 point ago

This is awesome to hear. I'm taking my GRE tomorrow to go back for my AE masters after being out for about 5 years.

Pro tip: Browse by top of the hour, make shitty puns. One of them will win. Comments at the top are slightly sticky, they tend to stay there. People usually only see the top comments, if your shitty pun is decent enough you'll get a nice enough percentage of upvotes. With the large audience you can cash in all of that karma.

[–]jackthedog 23 points24 points ago

When I first went back to grad school, one of my professors gave a little mini-lesson about "gutting a book." She essentially told us that while they might assign a book or two a week, most professors don't actually expect students to read the whole book. This article just about sums up what she told us.

[–]zen_nudist 4 points5 points ago

Now I'm reading up on Derrida, thanks.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

Derrida's a bitch. All about dat young Deleuze & Guattari. Baudrillard and Zizek are fun. Butler is a crazy bitch with some pretty cool shit to say about language and the state.

Foucault and Sartre are obviously mandatory to be considered a human being.

[–]electricalaggie 1 point2 points ago

[–]jdmf87 0 points1 point ago

Center substitution! Fuck yeah!

[–]devilrobotjesus 3 points4 points ago

so pretty much everything any halfway competent sophomore already knew?

[–]jackthedog 4 points5 points ago

I'm not sure if it's a matter of competency. As an undergrad I always felt compelled to read every book front to back and take diligent notes. I don't think that I'd consider myself incompetent because of this. Admittedly, time management wise it wasn't the best approach.

[–]TheGoomba 2 points3 points ago

People open the books?

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]TheGoomba 2 points3 points ago

Computer Science was my major as well and I PURCHASED tons and tons of books. Read very little. Funny thing is I've bought and read 3 books (Design Patterns, Effective Java, SQL) in the last month and read them by choice. Since graduation I can't get enough of reading and learning new langauges and concepts. It's strange. I'm also noticing that every professional I've met since graduation has this same design patterns book I do.

[–]HyzerFlip 0 points1 point ago

I'm guessing you didn't have to work as an under grad?

Having worked full time+ throughout my college career I simply didn't have that kind of time.

Don't get me wrong, given the chance to do it over I would have figured out a way to get financial aid or something, even if that meant waiting until my parents income no longer mattered.

[–]jackthedog 0 points1 point ago

I worked part-time as a waitress and received financial aid loans (which I am still paying off).

[–]HyzerFlip 0 points1 point ago

My parents income was always considered, but they had no money either.

I worked overnights then went to school during the day. Sucked

[–]HyzerFlip 1 point2 points ago

I wouldn't have gotten through my under grad without doing this... How others do is beyond me.

[–]WeavieStunder 1 point2 points ago

Would this method work on textbooks?

[–]jackthedog 0 points1 point ago

I'm afraid I really have no idea if this approach works for the textbook format. The reading that I've done in grad school has consisted of mainly monographs and journal articles/essays.

[–]omgitsjo 0 points1 point ago

I wonder if this technique holds true for someone getting a PhD in machine learning.

As someone who is currently in grad school, one tiny piece of advice: read. When they give you an article to read and say something like, "Read X and be prepared to discuss it on Wednesday" read it, and BE PREPARED TO DISCUSS IT. Otherwise, you'll be sitting there looking like an idiot who didn't bring anything meaningful to class. Other than that, good luck, and have a blast!

[–]zyxwvutsr 13 points14 points ago

Unless you have a real concentration. Then you spend your time learning instead of discussing things.

"So zyxwvutsr, how do you FEEL about Reynold's transport theorem? What do you think he was trying to express?"

"Well I think it's...wait wait wait, wtf is going on here."

[–]Tezerel 14 points15 points ago

Just say what I said all throughout the modern art section of art history: "I feel doomed yet slightly aroused."

[–]Bladewing10 0 points1 point ago

I'm thinking of going back and getting a Masters (or more) myself and that whole 'have some fun' thing really eluded me during my undergrad and now I really regret it. I suppose I'm partially going back to try to regain some of that lost time, but I'm guessing I'm not going to be able to dick around as much as I did during my undergrad. Either way, balancing school and social life is something everyone needs to figure out how to do.

[–]amaefm 0 points1 point ago

Funny story: After driving from MI to Boston, MA and talking about this particular scene of Workaholics earlier this year my friend and I met Ders in Boston Common. Was quite a coincidence if I say so myself.

[–]lnatx 0 points1 point ago

Agreed! Just took a GMAT practice test and realized I forgot how to do ALL math without a calculator. Time to study? again...

[–]Wonder1and 1 point2 points ago

Post grad looking back, books are ten percent of the challenge. They are mearly a container of facts and filler. A few real challenges you face will be quickly picking up what components of the text are worth your time, how to immediately apply what you are learning in the real world, and how to best develop your network. I recommend MBA students volunteer to lead any group they can during their time. It will be one of the few times you can hone those skills without risking a pink slip.

[–]J_Jammer 0 points1 point ago

[–]planification 0 points1 point ago

Protip: Grad school readings usually consist of a couple hundred pages of PDFs, and relatively few books. The readings often reflect current scholarship, and would be out of date by the time someone bound them into a book. Get an e-reader so you don't have to print everything.

I'm going back to college for a second bachelor's. Fortunately its been almmost back to back college, unfortunately this one isn't a consecutive higher degree, unfortunately I have to take freshmen level classes, and fortunately/unfortunately I'll be in class with 17-19 year olds lol

[–]PrivateIdahoGhola 1 point2 points ago

I'm doing the same now in pursuit of a STEM degree after a pointless English major that I did long ago. School now is so much easier now than it was when I was 17 and a freshman.

So its kind of amusing to see the 17-19 yr olds getting caught up in all the bullshit that you can just float over as an older student. This bit of easy amusement, and the fact that it's really easy to keep ahead of them, is making classes with them tolerable.

[–]dwkfym 1 point2 points ago

Very cool, I'm going for Electrical Engineering; same boat as you. I don't know if its going to be easy keeping ahead for me. I haven't done any sort of math in 7 years. Its gonna take me almost 4 years. I'm going to have been in college for 10-11 years.. lol

[–]SaulTNNutz 0 points1 point ago

When I went back to get my masters I didn't buy a single required textbooks for any of the classes. I pulled a 4.0. 5 years later, I still tease my wife (we met there) who spent hundreds on the textbooks and earned a 3.95

Depending on your major and what type of program you're doing (MBA/Engineering), you're probably going to have night classes and be ushered in one building where they stack all graduate students.

I rarely saw the young'uns (freshman to senior) unless I went to the library.

I felt so old being around them...

I bought all the required books in my first semester. Big mistake. 2 of the books weren't even used, one wasn't even fucking opened all semester. Why the fuck were we asked to spend stupid amounts of cash on obsolete books if we aren't even going to use them? So for semester 2, I didn't buy any of the required books until the fucking prof used it in a lesson. That is my story.

[–]Atom_Smasher 0 points1 point ago

[–]iamtheowlman 0 points1 point ago

You poor bastard, you have my sympathies.

If you've only done college before, it'll be even harder adjusting to university. Here's some pointers from a guy who went through a similar situation.

1) Throw common sense out of the window. Seriously, just do it. It will only hold you back here. Watch what the other students/teachers are doing and copy them, even if it seems totally arbitrary and stupid- doing it the logical way will not work here.

2) try to find out if you really, actually, truly need those books the professors are telling you to get. Ask students that have taken te class before, because chances are, the books are optional.

3) if you really do need them, see if you can get them on Coursesmart- generally 50% off the cover price, and they're electronic rentals, so if you only need them for 1 semester, you're golden.

4) Get a laptop. If you have a decently working one, great! If its 8 years old and can barely power up Windows, get a new one. It will save you enormous headaches because of step 5.

5) if you don't already, get a Dropbox account and save all your files to it, in a separate folder for each class. If you write faster than you type, then write out your notes, scan them into your comp, and save to your Dropbox. That way, if all else fails, your notes aren't lost.

6) Make friends with the professors if at all possible. They are not like your college professors, who (hopefully) have real-world experience in the industry (or any industry).

They are some of the most arrogant, pompous jerks you will ever hope to never meet again, but you will not change anything by opposing them in private or in public. The reason they are still there is because they are more securely seated than a barnacle in the underside of an oil tanker- you will not make them see reason, no matter what you do.

Think that about covers it- don't let the workload get you down, because there's a lot of it (especially Master's), and you've been out of the game long enough to get rusty.

My account is always open if you need a friend.

Good luck, my friend.

You'll need it.
