A guy who works on jets here:

The cowling coming off an engine would pose a relatively minor problem with aerodynamics. All the loose parts were behind the engine's intake, so there will probably not be any FOD damage to the fan, compressor, or turbines. I am sure there is some structural damage to the flight surfaces (left side leading edge, possible flaps, possibly horizontal stabilizer) , but nothing that can't be fixed relatively shortly.

All that aside, I am 100% positive that someone lost their job for not latching the cowling closed on the bottom. There are typically three latches that hold this cowling closed, and the fact that both the maintenance staff during their inspection, and the pilot during their walk-around missed this glaring error is beyond me. The aircraft will be fine, but must be landed immediately.

edit: englishing better nows

edit2: I should clarify. By "a guy who works on jets" I mean "A guy who works on aircraft". I am not an engine mechanic.

[–]straighttoplaid 8 points9 points ago

Another engineer for a major turbine manufacturer chiming in. The biggest danger here is to stuff like the oil lines and electrical wires. They could have gotten whacked when the cowling peeled off or the high velocity air could cause them to vibrate enough that they could fail. That being said, the likliehood of those things occuring is relatively low and the engine would most likely continue to run well until the plane made it onto the ground. Engines have encountered much worse and continued to run.

[–]daysi 1 point2 points ago

You've been here 8 days, you can't even confirm that the sky is blue on a sunny cloudless day.

[–]Hid3nka 2 points3 points ago

Another jet mech here! I third that motion

[–]jjjmiahh 0 points1 point ago

how is this now upvoted enough?

[–]Mikey-2-Guns 13 points14 points ago

Also, all air transport pilots are trained and perfectly capable of bringing their aircraft to a safe landing with one engine out. If they couldn't then they wouldn't have their jobs.

[–]Rednys 6 points7 points ago

Well it's still possible that the latches were damaged or the hinges at the other securing point were damage and they let go. It's not always someone being an idiot, just most likely.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

I would not put poor maintenance outside the reach of airlines.

[–]Rednys 5 points6 points ago

Huh? No one in their right mind would put it out of reach of airlines. Almost all aircraft incidents are either pilot or mechanic induced. Very few are actual freak conditions and could not be prevented.

[–]omanboard 21 points22 points ago

A voice of reason - hah. Good on you. How do you like your job?

[–]LettersFromTheSky 97 points98 points ago

How do you like your job?

He just got fired for forgetting to latch the cowling. ;)

[–]zafuinthebigtop 4 points5 points ago

Perhaps it was you who forgot the latch. I'm onto you LettersFromTheSky

[–]omanboard 2 points3 points ago

I've seen CSRs smash the gate into an open door and almost tear it off - causing a flight cancellation and thousands of dollars in repairs. I hope they would just put out equal blame on a torn-off cowling (checks were not done properly, it seems - by maint., ground, or the pilot(s) hah).

Oh, and the person who ripped the door off (more or less) was let go that day. Eh...

[–]Irishpilot84 7 points8 points ago

The girl who put he jet bridge directly below our open cabin door with a malfunctioning "jet bridge auto-level" got fired too. Door was bent to shit after the jetbridge tried lifting the entire airplane by the door.

[–]omanboard 5 points6 points ago

Oh man...I've seen some pretty stupid things happen. We once witnessed a pushback go rogue over the bar and hit into the nose of an aircraft. Massive investigation that lead to the airport saying, "Don't use old WW2 shit as pushbacks."

[–]Snackleton 10 points11 points ago

No idea what that means but I'm never flying again.

[–]omanboard 10 points11 points ago

Aircraft don't reverse under their own power when they push back from the gate. Basically, there's a truck of sorts at the front of the aircraft with a giant metal bar and pushes it back.

During the initial stages of prep, the pushback vehicle will hook up to the aircraft via the bar. I've seen horrid things happen - the worst being the vehicle's brakes not actually working and the damn thing throwing itself forward into the aircraft.

But don't worry, it rarely happens. It's about as common as mid-air collisions - erm...yeah, move along.

[–]nazbot 4 points5 points ago

Yes, I know some of those words.

[–]_UsUrPeR_ 9 points10 points ago

For the record, I do not work on civilian aircraft, but if you've seen one high-bypass turbofan, you've seen them all.

[–]makemeking706 6 points7 points ago

Voice of reason? He/she just said that the aircraft needed to be landed immediately. I would take that as a reason to be concerned.

[–]hobbnet 4 points5 points ago

Probably needed to be immediately landed to avoid freaking people out for the duration of he flight...as well as liability concerns.

[–]straighttoplaid 4 points5 points ago

In all likliehood the engine would have continued to run fine. However, when you're that high off the ground you take as few chances as possible. You get the aircraft on the ground ASAP to make sure everything is OK rather than just crossing your fingers and hoping.

[–]lurky_mclurkenson 8 points9 points ago

While your professional explanation certainly makes is sound reasonable safe, if I am ever on a plane and I see that, I am still going to start screaming "Holy shit we're all going to die!!!" and then grab the liquor cart and barricade myself in the kitchen/galley. Of course, maybe I just have a drinking problem.... Edit: typo

[–]HittingSmoke 7 points8 points ago

As long as you keep serving up the drinks, do what the fuck you want. I'm riding this pony into the ground and if I'm not lucky enough to be splattered on impact, I don't want to be limping away from this shit sober.

[–]IAMAHIPO_ocolor 22 points23 points ago

A buisnessman is on an airplane heading to Ontario from New York. Suddenly, he hears a loud BANG. The pilot's voice comes on over the speakers. "Folks, one of our four engines has malfunctioned. It will take 5 hours to reach our destination now. We are sorry for the inconvenience".

Another few minutes pass, and, again, the man hears a loud mechanical rumbling. He sees the smoke coming out of one of the starboard engines. The pilot comes on the speaker again; a bit of nervousness in his voice. "Folks, our second engine has blown. We are very sorry about the delay, but it will take 7 hours to reach Ontario".

Ten minutes later, once again, the man hears a screeching and twisting of metal. He sees the last starboard engine completely fall off. The pilot turns on the speakers. "F-folks, we are very sorry, but it will now take 10 hours to arrive at Ontario. Again, we apologize for the inconvenience." The pilot is apparently very shaken, and the people in the airplane seem very nervous.

The man looks very frustrated. A fellow passenger, looking very scared, asks him whats wrong. The man turns to the passenger, looks him in the eyes, and gruffs, "If any more engines blow, We'll be here all fucking night!"

*Edited because I'm an idiot.

[–]whynotslc 38 points39 points ago

I'd be pretty concerned that, for some reason, I'm London-bound when the plane I boarded was headed to New York.

[–]zackks 16 points17 points ago

Haha. Lose an engine between Ontario and New York...Divert to London.

[–]omanboard 12 points13 points ago

If it was between Ottawa and NYC, then London, Ontario would be a great place to land. Sort of...not really.

[–]0xbeef 2 points3 points ago

London is in Ontario... they have an airport. I've landed at it.

[–]IAMAHIPO_ocolor 3 points4 points ago

[–]slackwaresupport 100 points101 points ago

no.. it is just a dust cover.

[–]rofl_pilot 59 points60 points ago

Exactly, the engine cowling does not provide any essential function for flight. Even if it did damage the engine when it came off, a modern airliner can still land safely with one engine out of commission.

[–]no_name_racer 34 points35 points ago

Boeing designs their planes to be able to fly wit the top of the passenger compartment sheared off.

[–]Fantasysage 24 points25 points ago

People have no idea of how comically safe planes are.

[–]Etiolated 2 points3 points ago

We do. . .its just that a falling death is one of the more unpleasant ways to go. ie car crashes kill you fast

[–]scorpion347 6 points7 points ago

Falling doesn't kill you... the sudden stop does.

[–]DaywalkerOG 8 points9 points ago

Just saying, most planes could probably fly under this condition. As long as the engines and wings are fine, the ability to produce lift is unaffected. Safely however...

[–]Mr_Storm 6 points7 points ago

They should just keep goggles and flight caps underneath the seats, right next to the life jackets.

[–]Taikunman 2 points3 points ago

Aircraft don't require the lift generated by the entire wing surface to fly, there have been cases where large sections of wing surface have been damaged/broken off the aircraft and it can still maintain flight. Even a full engine failure in this condition is not necessarily lethal.

[–]froop 16 points17 points ago

[–]no_name_racer 9 points10 points ago

That's actually why they do this.

[–]danblee 2 points3 points ago

And it's why they suggest keeping your seatbelt on at all times. The only death in this incident was a flight attendant that was blown out of the plane.

[–]derrtydenim 2 points3 points ago

Fuck. Imagine the fall back to earth...knowing you're going to die. gulp

[–]slackwaresupport 4 points5 points ago

you can land a plane with no engines.. gliders..

[–]TubbyandthePoo-Bah 11 points12 points ago

The Gimli Glider.

[–]Gimli_The_Dwarf 15 points16 points ago

Guy screws up the landing gear - is it "Bob's spark fest"? No. Someone doesn't fasten an airvent correctly - do they call it "Fred's Aloha Airlines Sunroof? Nooooo...."

But I fuck up the fuel calculations one time...

[–]A_Fistfull_of_Data 8 points9 points ago

Upvotes for beating me to it!

Gimli Glider

[–]ICantKnowThat 20 points21 points ago

You can land a glider with no engines...but landing a jumbo jet with no engines might be a tad bit more difficult. Their designs are dramatically different, especially the aspect ratios.

[–]no_name_racer 7 points8 points ago

I know from working at ups all the planes at the facility i work at they are 747's and I believe they have to be going at least 150mph to land properly.

[–]Hypnotoad2966 8 points9 points ago

It's easy to keep a jet at 150mph as long as you're high enough and close enough to the runway. A 747 can stay up in the air around 20 minutes and go 80 miles or so if both engines stop at 35,000 feet, and even if you're more that 80 miles from a runway there's still a good chance you'll be able to find a landing strip, a river, or just a flat area to land.

[–]SexualArtillery 0 points1 point ago

actually it change aerodynamic characteristic and hurts fuel efficiency.

[–]captainhaddock 2 points3 points ago

"Ladies and gentlemen, I'm sorry to announce that we've lost an engine, and as a result, you will all be levied an extra $50 fuel surcharge."

[–]shuffs 2 points3 points ago

I would be more concerned with the damage (if any) to the wing when the cowling flew off.

[–]Woolbull 21 points22 points ago

Did the man on the wing wave at you?

[–]PittsburghStruK 14 points15 points ago

"THERE'S SOMETHING ON THE WING!"

[–]GovernmentOfficial 1 point2 points ago

I know I had a mental breakdown. I know I had it in an airplane. I know it looks to you as if the same thing is happening again, but it isn't. I'm sure, it isn't.

[–]kukluxknievel 31 points32 points ago

simple explanation

[–]windy444 5 points6 points ago

Yup. That's William Shatner too.

[–]tophermeyer 5 points6 points ago

I prefer to think of that character is a time traveling Captain Kirk who chased that beast onto the wing of the plane in order to make sex to it.

[–]Elivictus 8 points9 points ago

Gremlins?

[–]reverandgreen 6 points7 points ago

that was anakin skywalker's view and he didnt give no shit

[–]fapsauss 4 points5 points ago

Any decent pilot can set that thing down with 1 engine. That being said, that engine is more than likely still operational.

Is it repost time again?

[–]sqWADooSh 3 points4 points ago

Propulsion mechanic at Boeing here. This is definitely cause to land the plane at the nearest airport (which I'm sure is what happened). As Usurper stated this is caused by someone forgetting to engage the latches of the cowl. The good news is that I can see that all the cannon plugs, wiring, and other vital parts of the core are still attached. It would appear to be purely skin damage. There is however some damage to the strut as well (the thing that attaches the engine to the plane and feeds the power from the engine's generator to the rest of the plane). This kind of thing should never happen. Its likely that the engine was recently serviced, and the latches were not all engaged. As scary as it does look though there is little to no chance this is going to cause the plane to have any problems safely landing. We think of everything when we build our planes. This included.

[–]whileyouwereliving 4 points5 points ago

I know that one broken engine isn't enough to bring the plane down, and therefore I wouldn't be........

Fuck that. I would shit my pants.

[–]Scrial 2 points3 points ago

I think I would try to identify the different parts, now finally visible.

[–]DoktorKruel 2 points3 points ago

"Right dere's yer prob-lum."

[–]LukeTheSheep 0 points1 point ago

No, i trained for a year to be an engineer, one part was looking at how rolls Royce put those things together and looking at tests they do, those things are pretty f'in tough ill tell you what.

[–]casey825 2 points3 points ago

Yes. What does this say about the people who checked the plane that I am sitting in? Are THEY currently at 30,000 ft evaluating their accuracy?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

[–]Fizzlestick 0 points1 point ago

why would you board a Russian jet? didn't your mother teach you anything?

[–]folie1234 2 points3 points ago

Must've forgot a few screw. Not worth landing, can send someone with a screwdriver on the wing to fix that!

[–]Gimli_The_Dwarf 1 point2 points ago

The FAA actually have a classification for aviation incidents coded "TFOA": "Things falling off aircraft"

[–]kempomaster 1 point2 points ago

no, cause its a repost from like three days ago

even these jets are able to land with just one engine. a lot of safety precautions are taken and make it so that the plane is overcompensated in everything.

[–]mackinoncougars 0 points1 point ago

no, I would be an engine.

[–]QballDude 0 points1 point ago

Well... there's your problem.

[–]Metalock 0 points1 point ago

According to snopes, this actually serves no danger to the airplane.

[–]poccnr 0 points1 point ago

[–]el_padrino -1 points0 points ago

[–]MadeUpStoryTeller 0 points1 point ago

There's a man on the wing!

[–]jocarbart 0 points1 point ago

No.

[–]polonium269 0 points1 point ago

oops.

[–]TranquilxInsanity 0 points1 point ago

Okay despite the voice of reason by Usurper, I prolly would just return to my book and ignore everything, and everyone till we landed. Worst outcome = crash. Best outcome = finishing my book.

[–]CBruce -1 points0 points ago

There's...something...off...the wing. Some...thing....off the wing.

[–]drhugs -1 points0 points ago

I'm pretty naive. First time I was sitting behind the wing and saw the thrust reversers deploy, I thought the engine was falling apart. Good thing we were pretty close to landing anyway.

[–]CompletelySarcastic -1 points0 points ago

No.

[–]McCat416 0 points1 point ago

See that big white harness? I build those everyday at work, kind of cool to see it in perspective on a plane.

[–]Sweet_Thang 1 point2 points ago

[–]Greg1215 0 points1 point ago

Nope...finally, a plane that looks like a podracer!!!

[–]jonnytylerterry 1 point2 points ago

you have to fear death... in order to rise.

[–]InvalidZod -1 points0 points ago

I wouldnt be worried about any sort of mechanical failure but I would worry about where that debris is flying and how it would affect the aerodynamics of the plane

[–]eatyouout 0 points1 point ago

yes

[–]icameforthecookies -1 points0 points ago

Time to land...

[–]airbreather02 0 points1 point ago

I wouldn't be so worried about the engine as there is more than one on the plane. However, that wing looks fucked up and you need both of them, no matter what...

[–]Defcon458 0 points1 point ago

Would I be scared?! I'd be shitting my fucking pants.

[–]Mixin_Up_Yer_Crayons 0 points1 point ago

All that cowling is an extra fee now. . .

[–]UnfortunateCakeDay 0 points1 point ago

You survived, don't worry about it.

[–]Dominoes282 0 points1 point ago

Did you know that the cowling loose in that picture is just decorative, only used so that passengers don't lose thier minds? Not really integral to the connection of the engine to the wing.

[–]DazPatrick 0 points1 point ago

TFOA!

[–]Bitingsome 0 points1 point ago

I would be slightly worried that it would shear off a bit during landing and then at that rather critical point mess up the manoeuvre.

[–]usmcpilot 0 points1 point ago

I can fly. I'm pilot.

[–]wutangswordstyle 0 points1 point ago

[–]PediatricLemon 0 points1 point ago

No. Because I've had like 5 years to be desensitized to this pic.

[–]Thedevilinsidemne 0 points1 point ago

Somewhere a aircraft mechanic got fired.
