Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

I didn't realise that video had 720p... I am not very good at the youtubes.

Edit 1: My video editing software was not installed (recent OS reinstall) Give me a bit...

Edit 2: Frames extracted. Just finding the right ones to make a nice loop.

Edit 3: Almost done. Just looks like there's one frame making it look glitchy.

Edit 4: Uploading. It's a 14mb gif. I could easily make it smaller, but then you'd lose a bunch of quality. If anyone wants individual gifs/pngs, tell me and I'll upload them somewhere as a zip. Else I won't bother.

Edit 5: Turns out imgur doesn't like large gifs. Can anyone suggest a site that does?

Edit 6: (Too many edits...) Uploading to the googles now... hopefully this works, though it's going slow. I will report back when it's done.

Edit 7: Imgur, picasaweb, google+, and various other sites don't like the image. I'm uploading to mediafire and you guys can download whatever makes you happy.

Edit 8: Sorry this has taken so long. Here's a link to downloads for those that wanted them. I'd love to be able to hotlink and display the image in this post, but it just doesn't seem possible with any of the sites I found.

I just edited the post above with a link to a mediafire folder containing three files:

  • zip containing PNG files
  • zip containing GIF files
  • the resulting GIF

At the end of it all, it's pretty much the same as the OP but of higher quality.

Just seems to be Newtons Cradle with lights. As far as I can tell it is just an art project. The light/electricity doesn't actually do that, in case it had to be explained.

It's definitely not Newton's Cradle. There are little solenoids which push the lights on either end, you can even see them in the video. It's a clever piece of timing, but the time necessary for the mechanical force to be transmitted from one end of the bulbs to the other is far shorter than the time it takes for the filaments to begin to light up.

Of course it's not functioning like a newtons cradle in terms of the physics of the device, but I'm pretty sure that is what it is supposed to be imitating from a visual standpoint.

Which is why you account for the delay and start them lighting up a couple of milliseconds earlier. Power is transmitted from the wires connected to the bulbs, the solenoids provide the kick to give the Newton's cradle effect.

Probably not, doesn't look as though they're moving all that fast, maybe after a bit of time they would start to crack from the stress and then shatter.

What makes sense to me, purely speculation, is that the bulb which was the first to contact the series of bulbs would shatter. The parts of glass that are flung backwards from the impact would conserve momentum and the rest of the bulbs would most likely be intact. (could be wrong though)

It's also just flat out too slow. There's almost no (perceivable by the naked eye) delay between the impact and the opposite swing on a real Newton's cradle.

It would be a lot more convincing if they were able to speed it up a bit.

In XP, just set the image as background. In Vista & above, you'll need a program to make it animate. A bit of googling makes it look more difficult than it's worth.

See that little black box? Thats what pushes the light bulb away and when it swings back it sends a signal to the other black box that matches the speed of the light "flowing" through the bulbs in the center, then it pushes the other bulb away, rinse, repeat.

yes, you do. When you find the link (on reddit, digg, 4chan, etc) copy & paste it into the reddit search bar. If it's been posted, it'll lead you to the post itself. If not, it'll say "this hasn't been posted yet" and take you right to the submission page.
