Does anyone know that the church doesn't shun gays? At least the catholic church doesn't. The catholic church views gays the same as single people and they view gay sex the same as sex out of wedlock. In this religion only a man and a women can be married, just like men can only be priest, and women can only be nuns.

[–]redbeardo 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, pretty much the Catholic church says gay people can exist, but never have a physical relationship ever.

[–]simbadweasel 36 points37 points ago

this must be a canadian protest

[–]vsTerminus 17 points18 points ago

I was going to say, these are just Canadians visiting Chicago. They probably aren't even Christians.

Sorry.

[–]omers 4 points5 points ago

I get the joke but for anyone interested it's actually from Chicago pride.

[–]Kennian 29 points30 points ago

i vaguely recall someone finding out this was a bullshit publicity stunt...

[–]alexomiotek 7 points8 points ago

Source?

[–]bullshit_throwaway 26 points27 points ago

[–]mr_pleco 6 points7 points ago

Yup, that's bullshit.

AND TO THINK I HAD SO MUCH FAITH IN THEM

Thank you for the proof though.

[–]wtf_ffs 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for that, it's easy to fall victim to an image, tugs at the pathos, always use critical thinking.

I'm surprised the other two were 4 months back. It seems like I see this on the front page atleast every month.

[–]frstv 1 point2 points ago

Did you try clicking the KarmaDecay link above? Because if you look you'll find you're pretty much right.

The bot above only mentions a few. I don't know what algorithm it uses to choose but it certainly isn't "most recent".

I'm also not sure it catches everything - pretty sure the last time I saw this was ca. 2 weeks ago.

[–]chase2020 1 point2 points ago

yup, the full karma decay shows that it has been posted 7 times within the "about a month ago" timeframe.

[–]rasputine 13 points14 points ago

Marin foundation is a strange organization that seems to simply tell each side of the "debate" whatever they can to get approval and donations. They apologize on behalf of christians, refuse to comment on whether gay is a sin, or whether gays go to hell. He touts an ex-gay man (married to a woman, has a child) and a gay priest (celibate) as good examples.

It smacks heavily of a hate-the-sin-not-the-sinner group, a pray-the-gay-away group, and a whole lot of we-love-donations group.

Here's a wee piece linked on an earlier posting of this: http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archives/2010/07/01/re-christians-protesting-at-pride

Another: http://news.change.org/stories/an-apology-that-lgbt-people-shouldn-t-accept

Some more: http://www.signorile.com/2010/07/more-of-that-false-prophet.html

Their site: http://www.themarinfoundation.org/

And what have you. These people don't deserve respect, it's a sham.

[–]LucianLutrae 4 points5 points ago

http://www.queerty.com/the-bbc-got-it-wrong-with-their-story-on-pro-gay-christian-andrew-marin-20110930/ I'm sorry, but your faith in humanity got dashed again. It seems that these are the sorts of Christians that still spew the equally harmful rhetoric of homosexuality being a "sin" and they use the "I'm sorry" as a bait and switch to attract GLBT folks.

[–]Weedman5000 2 points3 points ago

Reminds me when south park featured BP, and the guy was like, we're sorry. While he was holding kittens and such.

[–]InTheHamIAm 2 points3 points ago

Giving new meaning to "Christian Apologists"

[–]LibrarianKay 5 points6 points ago

Yeah, no. This has been posted before, and it was found out then that the organization behind it is just veiling the same crap that's sadly the "best case scenario" when dealing with most churches. (We love you! But we think being gay is a sin and terrible.) This was a publicity stunt, and in the end it's hollow and meaningless.

[–]wtf_can_i_be 2 points3 points ago

Nah bro they are faking it.

[–]yabigbabybbq 3 points4 points ago

Let's all find a way that we can still hate these people.

[–]tomjen[!] -4 points-3 points ago

It is pretty clear that they disagree with the bible about an issue, even though it is pretty clear what the bible has to say about it.

For that sin Adam and Steve was thrown out of paradise.

In other words these people are so inconsistent in what they actually believe.

[–]Pythosblaze -1 points0 points ago

I've seen this picture a couple of times now and it always makes me smile.

Christians who choose to focus on the "love" aspect of their religion can actually be pretty awesome people. I think we forget that some times.

[–]frstv 0 points1 point ago

Sorry to ruin your hopes, but they are far from "awesome people". Quite the opposite, in fact.

Maybe you should actually look into this group (others have provided links here, just scroll up).

[–]Pythosblaze 1 point2 points ago

I'll be honest. I haven't actually seen anything of these guys past the two photos doing the rounds on the internet.

I will have a look at those links you mentioned.

[–]Lots42 -1 points0 points ago

That reminds me; ever notice that many of those fundies that do spew hate are fit and toned? I'm not the best judge of attractive men, seeing how I like chicks, but seems like the more men are against being gay, the sexier they are.

[–]humanity23 -1 points0 points ago

Funny how you use that word "faith".

[–]BaronVonBondage 2 points3 points ago

No, not really, if you can differentiate between the meaning of the word and its religious connotations.

[–]humanity23 -1 points0 points ago

I understand the practical usage of it, I just wanted to point that out because I really despise that phrase. It's incredibly condescending because we're all part of humanity, and OP or anyone else is no better.

[–]PleaseEnd 1 point2 points ago

Faith in reposts restored

[–]Casual_Lurker1 0 points1 point ago

While it's nice that a few make an example of themselves -> "I used to be a bible-banging homophobe - Sorry!", they have no right - none - to apologize for the actions of others. The actions of the church itself, as a representative of the christian majority, is still liable for actions they have caused. As such, the church itself and its congressional leadership should be punished for, quite literally, ruining the lives of thousands of these men and women. However, should we so much as take a step toward this approach, I think that we'd find this apologetic group will perform a 180 to defend the very church they are apologizing for.

[–]plazma911 1 point2 points ago

If this was to restore my faith in humanity, it would have to have about 99% of all the Christians on earth in this photo. However, it is great that some people have come to their senses.

[–]BeerLaoMakesMeHorny 1 point2 points ago

I used to go into gay chats on AOL and ask if they masturbated while they pooped. I'm sorry.

[–]chigaythrowaway 0 points1 point ago

It seems like people like to bring up how Andrew Marin doesn't address yes/no question like "is homosexuallity a sin" or his comments to conservative Christians.

I hate to put a tall task forward, but if you read Love is an Orientation you'd understand better where / how he approaches the Christian LGBT community.

As a gay man (oh man that phrase sounds cliche) I've met / prayed with Marin. I cannot understand the ways people object to him - he's performing a really integral service and the LGBT community in Chicago supports him - at least - I haven't met any other LGBT people who have disagreed with his message, even after reading things from Dan Savage / The Advocate. The media seems to distort his message into much more sensationalistic "with us or against us" mentallity.

[–]smrzan 0 points1 point ago

Brought a tear to my eye!

[–]ChaosCon 0 points1 point ago

Why have they written all their signs in the past-tense?

I'm sorry for how the church treated you.

The church still treats homosexuals pretty poorly.

I'm sorry christians have shunned you.

Still shunning, too.

[–]davorzdralo 0 points1 point ago

I'm sorry too, but this image just screams: COGNITIVE DISSONANCE!!!

[–]DeltaX13 0 points1 point ago

This is "love the sinner, hate the sin."

[–]CrocodileGlue 0 points1 point ago

Are any other gays made uncomfortable by this? Like, if we just walked by them, would they cheer or something? Can't they just write a letter? More people would see it and less awkwardness would be wreakethed. I appreciate the sentiment (and maybe courage?) behind their gesture, but sometimes all this attention we're getting can be a little hard to take.

[–]Cenfre 0 points1 point ago

I know that they meant well, but for some reason it came out sounding like this for me.

[–]MrWaffle09 0 points1 point ago

[–]Tlingit_Raven -1 points0 points ago

Sorry, in the Book of Dawkins, Chapter Sagan it clearly states all religious persons are to be held with contempt, mocked, and ridiculed. Please review the texts for atheism before posting.

[–]horriblydishonest 1 point2 points ago

Yes some religious people are good. I would have to go with the saying that human nature can triumph over bigoted hatred any day. The problem is that when you are raised to hate it is a hard cycle to break. Religion while used as a device for control is not bad in itself as it can set up guidelines that help a society thrive and prosper. However when you warp twist and maim stuff that has been translated from language to language to language and it has lost all of its original meaning then you are left with a distorted view of ancient law that serves no purpose in present day.

[–]Thisisopposite[S] 2 points3 points ago

Couldn't of summed it up better myself, I don't have hatred for other religions I just don't understand how they come to certain conclusions!!

[–]blaghart 2 points3 points ago

Particularly when they come to a conclusion that is contradictory to their own message...

[–]Thisisopposite[S] -1 points0 points ago

& they haven't read their holy book once...

[–]Discord_agent 0 points1 point ago

I'm glad one small group of people are sorry their religion doesn't like gays.

[–]ucofresh -2 points-1 points ago

That is truly awesome. Much respect for those people.

[–]Splarnst -2 points-1 points ago

Where are the signs saying…

“Sorry for believing in magic without evidence”?

“Sorry for promoting fairy tales about heaven that diminish life on earth”?

“Sorry for validating the hate on the other signs”?

[–]Thisisopposite[S] -3 points-2 points ago

That played out better in your head right?

[–]Splarnst 2 points3 points ago

People make half a step. Whoopty-do. That doesn't "restore" my "faith" in anything.

[–]cummyface -3 points-2 points ago

But you still believe in all that other make believe crap.

[–]ableom -5 points-4 points ago

Would you ever show someone this picture in person and as you are handing it to them say "Faith in humanity restored"? No, because you'd sound like a giant idiot.

Unless you are a giant idiot.

[–]aflarge 0 points1 point ago

While I appreciate the sentiment, apologies are only slightly more effective than prayer. If you're willing to rally for something, why not do something useful? Actively work to fix the problems in society rather than apologizing for them.

Also, I don't condone apologies on behalf of other people.

[–]Negro_Napoleon -2 points-1 points ago

This is why I think religious moderates need to be called out more:

This is my MAIN problem with /r/atheism lately.

Whats up with all this undue praise for religious moderates?

All of these are threads that they're getting all this praise in just for being religious moderates.

Its nothing new. Why does /r/atheism love to act like people are automatically off the hook for being progressive, when thats not the point.

They want to NOT kill gays or women? Thats great!...now how about you stop invalidating religion at the same time you try to support it. Its not helping anyone.

Its incredibly annoying.

Religious moderates are starting to become as bad as the fundies.

Why?

They don't recognize their own cognitive dissonance.

It should not be allowed for them to reject and declare parts of the bible as metaphor or mistranslations and simultaneously adopt other parts as literal and inerrant...while proclaiming that the book itself is infalliable.

Fuck.

That.

Religious moderates are in the same lot as the fundies. At least the fundies are predictable because if its in the bible/quran, they believe it.

The fundies have a set of rules they follow and its easy to distance yourself from them.

The religious moderates on the other hand will swing too and fro. They don't know which issues to separate themselves from. '

The liberal christians are even worse. They support gay marriage and equality...but then they don't even realize that many parts of the bible are DIRECTLY against that sort of ideology.

They want props for being "nice people" and doing "nice things"...but don't even realize that them still legitimizing their "faith" and "belief" allows the very things they're combating to be perpetuated and reinforced.

By them being religious, they're encouraging the same behavior they're combating.

Saying "i'm not that bad" is not helping anyone. If you're a religious moderate you are in the same bag of crazy bullshit as the fundies...they just want to choose their wording to make themselves seem less controversial.

http://livinglifewithoutanet.wordpress.com/2009/01/25/moderate-religion-two-lies-in-one/

Being a religious moderate is the biggest lie in any concept of theology out there. There is no such thing and any reference to such a concept should be chastised and ridiculed.

You want to preserve your autonomy and freedom? Don't join a religion that prevents you from adopting contradictory views then act like you have the authority or cognitive superiority to reconcile two completely contrasting ideas.

I get pretty tired of /r/atheism voting up people who want to show us images of christians "doing right" or hugging the balls of buddhism and all other sorts of illogical positions on reality.

If you support any claim with either unsubstantiated evidence or supernatural mysticism, you are in the SAME boat. It doesn't matter how extreme or how literal.

Stop promoting the ignorance of moderates and masking it as tolerance.

You want to say you're better than the people who actually and actively seek to "take rights away from others" because of what the bible says, but then defer to the bible to make other decisions and influence your life?

Bullshit.

Its all or nothing.

Its funny how religious moderates KNOW to adopt the generally "good" stuff and ignore the "bad" stuff...but they don't realize that they've already made that decision. On this accord they could technically ignore the good stuff in the bible and continue living as a religious moderate.

The point is that being a religious moderate is NOT the same as being a good person.

What also bugs me is when they don't want their religion in government. It says to me that their religion isn't even valid enough to be implemented as the law and they know it. They're OK with admitting that their religion is pointless when it comes to legislation.

For context: "The Negro's great stumbling block in the drive toward freedom is not the White Citizens Councilor or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to order than to justice."
