Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

More photos of it burning. They are pretty epic.

HEY GUYS IM HELPING

[–]Seventyseven7s 48 points49 points ago

Stop it, Jarvan IV.

[–]fiercelyfriendly 155 points156 points ago

Hey guys I'm not going anywhere near that thing until I've got my fire pumps running up to pressure, and the monitors working properly.

[–]zyedy 239 points240 points ago

Alright Dr. Serious.

[–]snatchinyopeopleup 44 points45 points ago

Where do you get a phD in serious

[–]surprisepinkmist 26 points27 points ago

I bet some of the oil is still on fire. Notice he is in the oil slick.

is this him again? http://i.imgur.com/e8jan.jpg

[–]Roboticide 30 points31 points ago

Hard to tell really, but it could be our Little Fire Barge That Could.

[–]elonepb 31 points32 points ago

He's just filling up the ocean

[–]econymous 13 points14 points ago

Lot of water evaporated, gotta replace it unless you want salt flats

[–]mistaleak 5 points6 points ago

That's hilarious....but I was thinking he's spraying the dispersing checmicals that were used to help kill entire ecosystems disperse the oil.

[–]MechaCanada 94 points95 points ago

I didn't think it was a real photo at first! It looks too... epic to be real. Thought it was concept art or something.

[–]swandi 37 points38 points ago

Same here. It's such good quality and high-res... not often that a professional photographer is on the scene during an event like this.

[–]clee_clee 77 points78 points ago

I'm sure it was just some guy using Instagram.

[–]stinkytaco 17 points18 points ago

It's their new "Natural Disaster" filter.

[–]BHSPitMonkey 15 points16 points ago

... "Natural"??

[–]stinkytaco 13 points14 points ago

I actually thought a long time about that term. I was going to put "Man-made Disaster" filter, but it's both man made and disastrous to the natural environment. I didn't want to use just "Disaster" because it didn't have the same ring. I settled on "Natural" after some internal debate because it sounded better (probably because it's a more common term).

This tour of my thought process brought to you by me.

[–]fuckingcaptcha 4 points5 points ago

[–]diesel828 17 points18 points ago

Those boats are like trying to piss on a house fire to put it out.

[–]zyedy 2 points3 points ago

Holy muffins those are cool! We should cover the gulf in oil more often!

[–]Baby_Wayne 1 point2 points ago

That looks really healthy for the environment.

[–]crying_about_gfwl 2 points3 points ago

I dont see any fire hydrants, where is all this water coming from?

[–]chaddercheese 1270 points1271 points ago

This is comforting to see, considering I'm on her sister rig at this very moment.

[–]farewelltokings2[S] 550 points551 points ago

Well, be careful out there.

[–]Bromagnon 100 points101 points ago

never really seen any episodes of classic thunderbirds..what does FAB stand for?

[–]Bromagnon 25 points26 points ago

Ironically it never stood for anything.. it was just like 'all systems go/roger that'

FUCKING A BROHEIM!!!

'F.A.B., a radio acknowledgment used in the Thunderbirds TV series (equivalent to modern 10-4 meaning Fully Acknowledged and Briefed)'

was where it came from, but gerry anderson never explained a context for the tv series

[–]Aviatorloser 3 points4 points ago

So, that theme tune is going to be in my head all day. Dun duh duh dun!

[–]ILike4ChanShh 30 points31 points ago

Good thing you said that. OP was about to go smoke a cigarette in the ship's gas chamber.

[–]p222 51 points52 points ago

what's your contingency plan for escaping the collapsing rig?

[–]B118 90 points91 points ago

Oil rigs have one or more lifeboats to go to. Rather than be winched down into the sea, like a conventional lifeboat on a ship, these will free-fall in order to gain momentum so that on splashdown, it automatically propels the boat away from the rig. Then the engine can be engaged and can motor away to safety. Best clip I've seen so far of this.

[–]krackbaby 21 points22 points ago

That drop looks painful, though not as painful as burning alive

[–]blay12 26 points27 points ago

Well these guys seemed to enjoy it...

[–]SilverTM 4 points5 points ago

That doesn't seem to be as rough of a ride as I imagined it to be. I'm also impressed at how well it works at getting the boat away from the rig. Very clever.

[–]ed1w2ard 2 points3 points ago

You have to wear a body harness with straps around your forehead to keep your neck from snapping during the water impact which is pretty much like getting hit by a truck. Did a safety training course once, the nighttime-underwater-helicopter-escape was peanuts compared to this.

[–]Kongbuck 100 points101 points ago

I would imagine that it would be diving for dear life off the side.

[–]XyploatKyrt 181 points182 points ago

Jumping, climbing or abseiling from the collapsing platform is prohibited as it may result in severe disability compensation which is more expensive than bereavement compensation. You are reminded that it is company policy to stay on the platform and await rescue. Failure to comply will be interpreted as your voluntary renouncement of any insurance or compensation entitlement. This does not affect your statutory rights.

[–]WallyAnti 118 points119 points ago

Reminds me of this:

Yossarian: Is Orr crazy?

Dr. 'Doc' Daneeka: Of course he is. He has to be crazy to keep flying after all his close calls he's had.

Yossarian: Why can't you ground him?

Dr. 'Doc' Daneeka: I can, but first he has to ask me.

Yossarian: That's all he's gotta do to be grounded?

Dr. 'Doc' Daneeka: That's all.

Yossarian: Then you can ground him?

Dr. 'Doc' Daneeka: No. Then I cannot ground him.

Yossarian: Aah!

Dr. 'Doc' Daneeka: There's a CATCH?

Yossarian: A catch?

Dr. 'Doc' Daneeka: Sure. Catch-22. Anyone who wants to get out of combat isn't really crazy, so I can't ground him.

Yossarian: Ok, let me see if I've got this straight. In order to be grounded, I've got to be crazy. And I must be crazy to keep flying. But if I ask to be grounded, that means I'm not crazy anymore, and I have to keep flying.

Dr. 'Doc' Daneeka: You got it, that's Catch-22.

Yossarian: Whoo... That's some catch, that Catch-22.

Dr. 'Doc' Daneeka: It's the best there is.

[–]Unidan 28 points29 points ago

WEIRD FAMILY FACT:

My mother has never read Catch-22. I was reading it for high school once when she noticed the author's name on the cover. She said that my grandfather flew with Joseph Heller in the war.

I, of course, was completely blown away, which is when I found out that she had never read his book, simply that she knew that my grandfather had told her that he'd been in the same plane as him in Italy.

[–]urnlint 38 points39 points ago

I started that book, but could not get into it. Am I missing out? Perhaps I should try again now that I am older.

[–]Anigtimat 26 points27 points ago

You should. Don't read it for a narrative, read it for the perspectives. It's a world where each character can fairly claim to be the only sane one.

[–]larsdabney 10 points11 points ago

"Don't read it for a narrative,"

Crucial piece of advice there. I got very frustrated from not being able to figure out what the hell the plot was for the first half, until I realized there wasn't one. Once you start looking at it as a string of connected character vignettes, each making a unique statement about war, it gets a lot more enjoyable.

[–]moarlongcatplox2 46 points47 points ago

You should. Probably one of the funniest novels I've ever read. Funny in a dark, horrible way, akin to Dr. Strangelove.

[–]shahid1618 17 points18 points ago

I totally get why it's hard to get into - the style is pretty different than usual. But it is absolutely worth it - it's one of the books that deserves its place in the top X books lists. It manages that rare trick of being roaringly funny and eye-wateringly sad, often at the same time.

"Ou sont les neigedens d'antan?"

[–]MadtownLems 4 points5 points ago

Same. Twice. Got a trip next week and need a book, maybe this'll be it!

[–]blackrug 4 points5 points ago

I read on third try. Now its one of my dearest books. I don't remember any other book I had so much fun and laughs with, real gem.

[–]SheppyD 6 points7 points ago

Its a difficult book to read, because there isnt much of a moving plot. just funny circumstances. take it a chapter at a time, and have other books to read along the way. Definitely happy I finally finished it.

[–]db0255 11 points12 points ago

That is the best book.

[–]Kongbuck 15 points16 points ago

To be fair, it does look like it's a long way down. The entire platform isn't on fire, so it is probably advisable to wait for the rescue ships than plummeting to your death (or serious disability, which means death in the water).

[–]phqu88 16 points17 points ago

I'd be more concerned about the debris below...no telling what's under there at that point.

[–]redrhyski 28 points29 points ago

I'd balance it with "there's fire here, and that's bad"

[–]swuboo 15 points16 points ago

On the other hand, flaming oil floats. My friend's grandfather swears that not knowing how to swim was the only reason he survived the loss of his destroyer during the War.

The ship didn't quite sink all the way; the relatively few guys who stayed on board were rescued, but most of the ones who went into the water died there when the fuel caught.

[–]Concubicycle 15 points16 points ago

So you're saying... assume the party escort submission position?

[–]Backstop 27 points28 points ago

Now read this in GLaDOS's voice.

[–]micronaught 19 points20 points ago

I read everything everyone types here in her voice.

[–]Guy_Dudebro 9 points10 points ago

Jumping off a platform will almost certainly kill you, whether from the impact, impact plus drowning, plain-old drowning, or exposure.

These things have lifeboats. Use them.

[–]p222 68 points69 points ago

incidentally, that's the same thing people do when they want to off themselves

[–]ephoric 4 points5 points ago

http://www.fassmer.de/ I believe that rig had lifeboats manufactured by Fassmer. I'm not sure if they run the life rafts (inflatable) that are davit lowered or if they use free fall lifeboats. There was no failures by the lifeboats/rafts.

Video of a raft, these can be inflated on the rig and hooked up to a davit to be lowered to the water. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkg4VVlOMYg

Video of free fall lifeboats. Safer than the davit launched, but still I'm not a fan. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjtIIbucI_o

Keeping it real on the Deepwater Nautilus. Question. After the collapse/sinking of Horizon was it determined if it was due to structural causes and was there any modifications done to Nautilus?

[–]geusebio 86 points87 points ago

I think it was a case of "it melted just a bit" like most things subjected to a billionty joules of energy in the form of heat

[–]piporpaw 77 points78 points ago

Highly technical. Not Jargony. 10/10 would read again.

[–]redrhyski 6 points7 points ago

It must be said that is pretty close to the truth. Most stuff will fail when a gas explosion is under their ass.

[–]nordicapollo 52 points53 points ago

Offshore structural engineer here. I can confirm this. The vessel's structure performed brilliantly and lasted well over a day of exposure to intense heat. But a billionty joules is just too damn much.

[–]shstmo 3 points4 points ago

I'm studying ocean engineering. Mind if you give me a quick rundown of what you do/what part of the world you live in? :)

[–]BeowulfShaeffer 2 points3 points ago

Admit it - you just re-used this comment from last time when someone asked you why the WTC collapsed.

[–]wavefunction84 22 points23 points ago

If Michael Bay has taught me anything, it's to run and jump off in slow motion if such an explosion occurs. Don't worry, the fireball won't actually catch up to you.

[–]BeowulfShaeffer 9 points10 points ago

And whatever you do, do not turn around to look at it.

[–]handelsbar 6 points7 points ago

Helps to have an American flag waving in the background too.

[–]NonSequiturEdit 3 points4 points ago

Also, you will totally survive hitting the water no matter from what height you jump.

Is it weird that I really liked your version? Bay might be onto something with the color scheme... though I know Battlefield very obviously does this.

[–]bang0r 8 points9 points ago

It's not only Bay who does this, it's basically 70% of the hollywood industry. Michael Bay is just like the evil maniac of overusing Orange-Blue contrast. Human lives. Let's not forget the natural toll.

[–]YaoSlap 21 points22 points ago

Seriously, how many precious gallons of oil did we lose?

[–]eyecite 17 points18 points ago

more than 11 gallons, very sad.

[–]originul 2 points3 points ago

Every day I lurk on reddit until a comment makes me laugh hard enough to make a reply and then I login. You weren't first today, not even by a long shot, but keep making comments like that and one day you might be.

[–]RoboticWang 8 points9 points ago

I would gladly give up 11 human lives (that I don't know) in exchange for 11 gallons of oil. That shit is getting expensive.

If I knew the people, it would have to be least 34 gallons of oil.

[–]The--Stig 6 points7 points ago

Ban the ocean.

[–]TheNev 194 points195 points ago

Funny story... The professional oil rig firefighters (private industry) were not called out. They were consulted. They pleaded with the coast guard to not douse the thing with water because they were going to sink it. They said to use foam.

But since no private agency tells the government what to do (without huge sums of money being donated, that is), the government sank it and actually compounded the problem.

[–]AsskickMcGee 123 points124 points ago

There was also a Dutch team of technicians with their own oil spill cleanup ships. They volunteered to come over and begin operations immediately, but the people in charge of the mess insisted that it only be US workers that handle the mess. So the Dutch had to train entirely new guys to use their very precise equipment, wasting time and productivity.

[–]TheNev 29 points30 points ago

Union work, brother!

[–]fullahead 19 points20 points ago

complications of the Jones Act, brother!

Seems to me they could've made an exception...

[–]neverendingninja 7 points8 points ago

I wish they would have. It ruined my local economy for a solid year, and ruined my sons first summer before school started.

I live half an hour from Gulf Shores, Al.

[–]ohgodwhatthe 20 points21 points ago

Look at this 1%er, well off enough to even have his own local economy

[–]AsskickMcGee 3 points4 points ago

Yeah, I don't think it was a Union thing. It was more that the Jones Act required certain things to be done my American citizens, but the equipment offered by the Dutch was complicated machinery, not just a boat that a common sailor could steer.

It was extra silly considering that the intent of the Jones Act was to prevent shipping companies from dodging US tax and labor laws by hiring cheap (or forced!) foreign labor back in the 1920s. It had nothing to do with volunteered foreign aid for disasters.

[–]uncleawesome 20 points21 points ago

Its cute though, seeing those little boats with their little water hoses trying to put out that massive oil fire.

[–][deleted] 25 points26 points ago

Can you elaborate on this, or do you have a source?

[–]phqu88 61 points62 points ago

Don't put out oil fires with water?

[–]viddles 23 points24 points ago

He could do an experiment!! Take some oil in his kitchen and get it really hot, then set it on fire and splash some water on it to put it out! Hazar!

[–]TheNev 6 points7 points ago

for science!

[–]goatsonfire 8 points9 points ago

While true for a grease fire in your home, that actually isn't the reason here. Using water didn't sink it because it was an oil fire, using water sank it because it was floating and they flooded it with water.

[–]TheNev 8 points9 points ago

[–]nasdreg 4 points5 points ago

The ships in the photo aren't trying to put out the fire. They were instructed to apply cooling water only, meaning spray the structure with water to cool it down and stop it melting so much.

[–]jaxcs 9 points10 points ago

Is this anecdotal or do you have a source? Can you show that they had foam but declined to use it?

[–]BP_Claims 101 points102 points ago

I am the Director of BP Claims for a major law firm. Would anyone be interested in an AMA? (Throw away account)

[–]Kamarunga 27 points28 points ago

Well yes I would like an AMA.

I am interested in how many claims people filled and for which amount

[–]BP_Claims 31 points32 points ago

As of August 8th (today) there are a total of 35,352 claims filed and another 11,726 in progress. 28,000 of that total are between Florida and Louisiana alone. 35% are for individuals, 24% for business, 12% for Commercial fishing, the rest are for VoO, Property, Subsistence and Medical claims. The average claim is for $10-30k.

[–]bassetmaster 4 points5 points ago

do you feel personally that every one of those claims were legitimate?

[–]BP_Claims 11 points12 points ago

No, of course not, but many will get rejected. The ones my firm is filing are legit.

I'm no expert but this rig is not something that is attached to the ocean floor with thick steel columns. It is floating on water tight pontoons that are manufactures out of steel plates and sheets that will be ineffective if their "water-tightness" is compromised.

I'm not claiming anything other than that is a false analogy.

[–]friednoodles 4 points5 points ago

Plus this is over water! Don't even make sense. Fire don't mix with water!

[–]Youlikeniggerdicks 3 points4 points ago

I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but can you explain that to me? Steel does have a very high melting point.

[–]wawin 12 points13 points ago

steel doesn't need to be at full melting point for it to lose it's structural strength. By losing only a fraction of it's strength, the structure can be severely compromised.

[–]l30 14 points15 points ago

But 'splosions.

[–]I_FISTED_MY_GRANDMA 12 points13 points ago

An' shit.

[–]Pfeffersack 2 points3 points ago

You of all people must know.

[–]shuxkcds 39 points40 points ago

This isn't real. This can't be real. Is this real?

[–]Funmachine 74 points75 points ago

More commonly known as the BP Oil spill, in the gulf of Mexico.

[–]Uriah_Heep 28 points29 points ago

Actually, thanks to lighthearted, slickly-produced propaganda in the form of television advertising, BP's name is now associated with happiness, increased Gulf Coast tourism and Olympics sponsorship. This is just the Deepwater Horizon spill now.

[–]watsoned 14 points15 points ago

Unless you live in an area that was affected. Trust me, plenty enough people here still bristle when they hear BP or see their logo. So we still consider it the 'BP Oil Spill'.

[–]neverendingninja 3 points4 points ago

I still won't knowingly by BP fuel. It may not make a huge difference, but the way it was handled sickened me. The public boat launch just down the road from my house was converted into an operations base for Mobile bay, and every day I would see fifteen to twenty guys show up and sit all day long. They rarely went in the water.

They had security guards and all. It seemed like they were just trying to give the impression they were making an effort without really doing what they should.

The local gas station that had been open for twenty years went out of business that summer due to a lack of business. I never see Ms. Laura anymore, who had been selling me snacks since I was five.

[–]greenyellowbird 13 points14 points ago

Even though it looks like a scene from Battleship, unfortunately, its real...and depressing.

[–]sassi-squatch 4 points5 points ago

I remember reading that due to the spilling oil, it was difficult to remain anywhere near it, the oil was fouling the air to such an extent as to make it difficult to breathe.

The photos are incredible. I wonder how awful it sounded as well. Twisting steel only a mile or so away.

[–]ryder77 4 points5 points ago

Dammit Cloverfield! Stop destroying shit!

[–]pixartist 15 points16 points ago

Awesome. And horrible at the same time. Poor ocean :(

[–]shizzla 22 points23 points ago

Poor us!

[–]catcard 8 points9 points ago

Hey, downvoters, shizzla is kind of right here. First off, we depend upon the ocean for a great deal, and so negative effects on the ocean can turn into negative effects on us, given time.

And the oil spill was a catastrophe for ocean life, but it also wreaked havoc on the surrounding states' economies, especially Florida. Florida is a vacation/retirement state, and the oil spill absolutely decimated people's desire to come here. The amount of restaurants and hotels that shut down because they normally depended on the summer tourist boom was staggering. Even now, renewed interest in vacationing in Florida is only just starting to gain some really good momentum.

[–]jong316 7 points8 points ago

lol, is it just me or does spraying water on that seem redundant at this point?

[–]Monkeychimp 5 points6 points ago

Exactly what I thought. The little boat with the deck mounted Super Soaker in the 5th pic made me chuckle.

[–]mysockinabox 1 point2 points ago

Never forget.

[–]eyereport 2 points3 points ago

Forget what now?

[–]drakenkorin13 3 points4 points ago

Why are they spraying it with water? Seems like the most futile effort of all time. "WE CAN SAVE IT! WE CAN SAVE IT!!!"

[–]fultron 2 points3 points ago

This will get buried, but I was just reading about the Piper Alpha rig that burned in the North Sea in 1988.

A pump was switched on without a safety valve, and the resulting explosion and fire killed 167 of the 228 men on board.

Here's video from a firefighting boat during the event. At this point men are still on the rig. In fact months later they recovered the galley section from the ocean floor, inside they found the bodies of 87 men who had taken shelter when they had nowhere else to go.

Another video from the BBC 24hrs after

Found some photos:

Underneath the rig

Night falls

Before and after

Months after

Deepwater was a more serious ecological disaster, but one cannot discount the impact of knowing that this rig burned so hot that steel supports melted, with workers still trapped on board or jumping 20 stories to the water below.

[–]turbofucker 1 point2 points ago

Fuck it, let's go bowlin.

Needs the creepy smiling fire girl in the corner of the picture...

MEMORANDUM FOR: All NOAA Employees

FROM: Lois Schiffer NOAA General Counsel

SUBJECT: Reminder: Outstanding Litigation Holds

To All NOAA Employees --

This is one of our regular reminders about your responsibilities with regard to documents subject to litigation holds. I want to remind all NOAA employees and contractors of outstanding requirements to retain documents and other information and evidence (including e-mails and other electronically stored information) related to several cases. Do not delete, destroy, overwrite, or throw away any of this information or evidence related to these matters. Once the litigation hold has been lifted, you should retain the documents in accordance with NOAA’s normal document retention requirements.

The attached table provides the list of active and recently lifted litigation holds for our agency. Please review the list to determine if you have any information or evidence that is subject to a litigation hold. Updated information will be provided to you on a routine basis.

If you have questions about your obligations, please contact the NOAA Office of General Counsel by emailing our litigation hold help desk and adding the litigation hold tracking number related to the specific litigation hold (identified in the attachment to this message) to the subject line.

Thank you for your continuing cooperation.

Lois Schiffer

...

All hard copy and electronic documents and information and tangible things in NOAA’s possession, custody or control that are potentially related to the DEEPWATER HORIZON event, regardless of whether the information was in NOAA’s possession, custody or control before or after April 20, 2010. This includes information you possess if you worked on the NOAA response to the DEEPWATER HORIZON Event in any capacity; OR if your work has ever focused on one or more aspects of the atmosphere, waters, species, or other natural resources in, under, or using the Gulf of Mexico at any time of the year; OR if information in your possession, custody, or control focuses on one or more of the aspects listed above, or might otherwise be relevant to pre-spill conditions. With respect to electronically stored information, it is imperative that such information be maintained and preserved in its “native” format.

Pointless, but relevant. Mostly it bothers me that it's implied that some of the more important information could be destroyed under non-litigious circumstances.

It's a shame we didn't let the Dutch/Norwegian clean up crews in on this mess. They have the most advanced oil-skimming/filtration technology in the world. I remember them interviewing a captain and he said they could filtrate the water and reduce the pollution by ~90% (~10% would re-enter the ocean) if they got to it soon enough. Apparently the Obama administration didn't allow them to do it because pro-Union Jones Act restrictions even though they had the ability to waive it. Instead we just did nothing for three months. Any clarification on this would be nice. I don't claim to be an expert.

[–]malmac[!] 2 points3 points ago

I know it isn't the popular opinion, but I see this as a sad failure of our technology. We are after all human beings, possibly the only sentient life in the universe - possibly. Every single one of us has used and depended on the production of oil for our entire lives. Take it away, right now, and every single aspect of modern life, all of it - transportation, medicine, food supply, communications, entertainment, every city great or small, all of it - disappears and we, those who are left, anyway - return to the stone age. There is simply no way to replace it at the present time, and it means far more than just gassing up your car.
