Now that's classy

[–]Bigwood69 14 points15 points ago

You should post this over at r/oldschoolcool, they'd really enjoy it.

Man, a lot of stupid comments. Anyone who has ever taken an African American History class can tell you how monumental a picture like this actually is.

Thank you very much for sharing.

Edit: Briefly I'll explain why. The African Diaspora caused millions of Africans to be sold into slavery, many of them making it to America after a grueling trip best and most hauntingly illustrated in the movie Amistad. Slavery was abolished in 1865. Nearly 100 years later we have this man, back on the continent of his origin playing an instrument also in the continent of its origin.

Not to mention it's a really fuckin' cool photo

Dude, she's his wife. Of course he didn't.

[–]irawwwr 5 points6 points ago

I wish someone could turn this into a facebook cover photo.

You too can turn this picture into a facebook cover photo.

  1. Save picture
  2. Upload it as your facebook cover photo
  3. Reposition the photo to your liking.

[–]irawwwr 1 point2 points ago

Awesome. Thank you. I was trying to change the size of the photo to the cover size, instead of uploading.

Your Olympian is going to destroy Louis!

[–]friedrice5005 18 points19 points ago

Not to mention how influential musicians like Louie Armstrong were not only to Black music, but to American culture even today. He was an amazing player and you can still hear his influence in modern music.

We know you're just being a Dick, but try tracking the death of black jazz with the advent of the War On Drugs and the rise of the awful mainstream black music you hear today (which I presume you're poking fun at). It is iluminating.

I admit I don't have the right to call it awful, with such things being a matter of taste. But as a black composer/musician this is something I think about every day.

[–]alienproxy 0 points1 point ago

No. We have all the time in the world.

[–]Argyle_Raccoon 11 points12 points ago

For anyone who's interest, or honesty anyone who hasn't heard them before go listen to his hot fives and hot sevens recordings. They're from his first band that he led and some of the most influential pieces of American music ever are on them. Also they're fucking awesome, I'll be your big butter and egg man!

[–]jlking3 3 points4 points ago

Louis Armstrong was the first pan-accepted face of jazz music. While Buddy Bolden might have been more influential in the creation of what we know today as jazz, unfortunately no recordings exist of Bolden's playing. Armstrong helped define "authentic" jazz music with his imaginative improvisations (that did not always follow the melody) and a distinctive unique singing voice.

Most people today only know Armstrong for "What a Wonderful World" which is on the B-list of most 50s-60s format radio stations, and maybe from Scatman John's "Everybody Jam" which pays homage to Armstrong, especially in the video which features a Louis look-alike.

That's a shame, because the early stuff with King Oliver is important music to keep in the public consciousness. And to this day I adore the version of "When the Saints Go Marching In" that Danny Kaye and Armstrong did: exceptional musicality all around.

It is customary to link the thing you want people to click.

Anyone who has ever taken an African American History class

I haven't.. I'm so ashamed!

[–]SnailHunter 1 point2 points ago

For the small minority of us who haven't, can you explain why it's so monumental?

[–]ElPatreeecko -1 points0 points ago

Lighten up, bro.

[–]wh0418 8 points9 points ago

This picture is rather incredible, thanks for sharing.

[–]cat55 7 points8 points ago

this was his last wife... Lucille. what a striking image.

[–]Jwats96 11 points12 points ago

This made me smile more than anything I've seen in a while

[–]FluttershyIsGod 3 points4 points ago

Louis Armstrong is the man.

[–]ThePeaches 5 points6 points ago

Adore this picture. It just has a gorgeous old school, true love, musical joy about it!

[–]aBlueKiwi 4 points5 points ago

So romantic...

[–]mcgruppp 3 points4 points ago

what an amazing photo... any background on it?

[–]Vitalstatistix 32 points33 points ago

The Sphinx, most notably.

[–]aSimpleMan 4 points5 points ago

Damn, Louis musta gotten some that night no doubt.

[–]FaceRockerMD 5 points6 points ago

He's making her a little.... horny...

[–]ElPatreeecko 2 points3 points ago

I like to imagine that he's playing some tripped out, Arabic sounding, Bitches Brew type shit in this pic, but that is probably not at all the case.

[–]jlking3 1 point2 points ago

He may not be playing at all, and just posing with the trumpet. If he is playing, I'd like to think that he's playing something like "Ain't Misbehavin'."

[–]ElPatreeecko 0 points1 point ago

OR.... maybe he was never even there at all and this is some sort of conspiracy.

[–]jlking3 2 points3 points ago

Practice for the moon landing.

[–]technikalgaming 2 points3 points ago

This method of playing the horn has been passed down the Armstrong line for generations.

/pose

[–]21XX 1 point2 points ago

Oh no, did Louis Armstrong just take off his shirt again?

[–]dickspace 1 point2 points ago

Wearing a suit in 110 degree desert heat? Man the old days were wacky!

[–]ElPlacebo 1 point2 points ago

Can't like this enough.

[–]CupHalfFull 1 point2 points ago

This picture is about a man and his love for his wife. I have listened to Louie Armstrong for 50 plus years (thanks mom) and can tell you he puts his soul and heart into his music. Play his music and look at this picture, you can feel it.

[–]LudwigLobsters 2 points3 points ago

This picture isn't just about a man and his love for his wife. It's about a man who's so filled with love and joy that it seeps out of every possible orifice on his body. Louie was a force.

[–]CupHalfFull 1 point2 points ago

And will always be a force.

[–]Toshiro_Mifune 1 point2 points ago

Aww she's cute.

[–]Matt_McT 0 points1 point ago

Good ol Satchmo showing that a true musician uses their talent for more than just recording CD's. One of New Orlean's finest.

[–]justonecomment 0 points1 point ago

Why did I read that as:

Lance Armstrong pays for his wife in front of the Sphinx.

[–]Relient-J 0 points1 point ago

dat Cosby face

[–]Gnisufnoc 0 points1 point ago

World class cyclist, winner of several Tour de France's AND he can play the trumpet (not to mention turn into a black guy?!)

What can't this man do?

[–]KoreasGotSeoul 0 points1 point ago

It must have been a fucking hot day to be wearing a full suit.

[–]bellcom 0 points1 point ago

[–]iwasapolygon 0 points1 point ago

Thanks, OP. Finally a pic on r/pics that sort of makes me want to rescubscribe!

xpost to r/oldschoolcool!!!!

[–]Mrdigitdale 0 points1 point ago

True love is playing an instrument in 110 degree weather in a black motherfucking suit.

[–]Muffanzo 0 points1 point ago

This picture has been passed down the Armstrong family for generations.

[–]BigColton87 0 points1 point ago

Isn't this a repost? I saw this on r/pics months ago...

[–]closetedskeleton 1 point2 points ago

Cot damn that's love...*swooon

[–]cobraface 0 points1 point ago

Dat horn angle... Love to see a professional

[–]Yid 1 point2 points ago

Louis Armstrong was a diamond Giza.

[–]JushiBlue 0 points1 point ago

Is the sphinx really that small or is it just far away?

[–]Chairboy 2 points3 points ago

I don't know what you mean by 'that small' because 'that' isn't a unit of measurement with which I'm familiar, but yes, the Sphinx is kinda smaller in person than my imagination had portrayed it.

Still amazing, though.

[–]JushiBlue 1 point2 points ago

I know it wasn't specific, but it doesn't look more than 10 foot tall in this picture. I have never seen it but I thought for sure it is bigger than it looks in this picture.

[–]Chairboy 1 point2 points ago

It's certainly taller than 10ft, you must be seeing a trick of perspective.

[–]21XX 0 points1 point ago

You might be confused because it kinda looks like his wife is sitting on the sphinx's arm. This is definitely not the case. Looks like a small wall that is just blending into the background, which happens to be the sphinx.

[–]anonymousHacker -1 points0 points ago

Thank you very much for reposting

[–]LameassNo1 -2 points-1 points ago

I also tried this, but i only have a vuvuzela. It didn't go that well. Guess you have to be famous or something to be truly appreciated by the ladies.

[–]BeerPowered 1 point2 points ago

I tried strumming random chords on guitar and swearing out loudly. Ladies liked that and then left.
