The way its worded, you would need more than one llama.

I would know. My name's Jose

[–]AyChihuahua 5 points6 points ago

I can confirm this.

[–]Zondraxor 7 points8 points ago

He could have said "Como se...".

[–]josekristiano -1 points0 points ago

no because then they would be asking like "what's his/her name?" not "what's your name?"

[–]Lazar_Taxon 5 points6 points ago

"¿Cómo se llama Ud.?" would work.

[–]AA72ON 0 points1 point ago

Sí, me pregunto si Jose realmente hable español.

[–]josekristiano 0 points1 point ago

but they didn't write Usted...

[–]t_hab 2 points3 points ago

Or they would be asking somebody politely.

[–]josekristiano 0 points1 point ago

they would would need "usted" at the end or at the beginning.

[–]t_hab 0 points1 point ago

Not necessarily. If you are speaking to somebody, it can be understood from the context. You would only need to specify the pronoun if the context was confusing, but that's just as true for "usted," "ella," "el," "esto," or any other subject.

I admit that in most contexts you would specify "usted" if you were using as "you," but that doesn't change the fact that the picture would be grammatically correct if they changed the word "te" to "se."

[–]josekristiano 1 point2 points ago

I never said it was grammatically incorrect. What I was trying to say is if it were changed to "se" then they would be asking not our name but for someone else's name.

[–]t_hab 0 points1 point ago

And I'm saying that it could be asking for either, depending on the context. If I am in a business meeting and I shake a new colleague's hand, and ask '¿Cómo se llama?' or '¿Cómo se llama usted?' the same thing will be understood.

I agree with you, however, that in most cases you need the context. Normally you would add the name, noun, or pronoun at then end, whether it is usted, él, esto, or whatever, to avoid confusion. If I were in that same business meeting but shaking hands with somebody I knew, and I asked '¿Cómo se llama?' my colleague would have no idea who or what I was talking about.

[–]josekristiano 0 points1 point ago

We're not in a business meeting. Your point does not apply to this situation. Good Day, sir

[–]t_hab 0 points1 point ago

I'm pretty sure it does. The image itself has no context. You said that '¿Cómo se llama?' can't mean 'What is your name?' and I showed you, with a concrete example, that it can.

Good day.

[–]Bill_Clintons_Choad 0 points1 point ago

[–]Ragnalypse 22 points23 points ago

Me llamo el sombrero matador luchador chupa-cabra. Soy uno hispánico autentico, de verdad absolutamente, sin duda. Es cierto.

Arriiiiiibaaaa tacos.

[–]SpelingTroll 8 points9 points ago

"Yo soy el matador paraguayo. Estoy aquí para matarte."

"¿Para qué?"

POW POW POW!

"Paraguayo."

[–]TomHardon 1 point2 points ago

spanish

[–]AnaBackwards 1 point2 points ago

That was pretty funny, I must admit.

[–]SpelingTroll 1 point2 points ago

The man is in his sofa reading a book, safe from the storm outside and thankful for the warmth of the fireplace. Suddenly, someone kicks the door open. Amongst the freezing wind and sleet he can barely discern a dark tall figure in the doorway. The stranger is holding a gun. He speaks with a heavy foreign accent:

"I've walked two thousand miles to kill you"

The man retorts, aghast:

"TO WHAT?"

POW POW POW!

"Two thousand miles."

The strange man blows the smoke from the barrel of the pistol, spits on the floor and walks away.

[–]AnaBackwards 1 point2 points ago

Hahaha, thanks! You kind of read my mind, I wanted to find a way of telling the joke to an English speaking friend. Upvote for you.

[–]pacofvf 1 point2 points ago

That doesn't make any sense, is just like writing random words at google translator

[–]Ragnalypse 0 points1 point ago

Hispanic I take it?

Most Americans see those as random mexican names for things, not words.

Matador = guy who fights bulls, not killer.

Sombrero = that huge mexican hat, not any shade-providing hat.

Luchador = a mexican masked wrestler, not a fighter.

Chupa-cabra = a mythical beast, but they don't see it as "goat sucker."

[–]pacofvf 0 points1 point ago

I meant that the way you used those words makes no sense, matador means killer no matter in what context you are using it, if you use it in a bull fighting context, it means that you are a bull killer, that's why we use "torero" for bull fighter. Sombrero just mean hat to us(spanish speakers), a mexican hat is called "sombrero mexicano", it depends where are you from, for me when I imagine a hat or sombrero I imagine a cowboy hat, and actually that hat is the most used in Mexico. Luchador and chupacabras... ok those are "mexican" words, and the rest of your sentence would give a spanish grammar nazi a heart attack.

[–]cjj2412 5 points6 points ago

That was all I could think about in the high school spanish classes.

[–]Ragnalypse 9 points10 points ago

Grassy ass for your opinion.

[–]LeftoverBoots 0 points1 point ago

Lololl reminds me of this teacher I had who we called profay. Short for professora. She used to say that all the damn time, and we were all pretty sure she went home everyday and smoked a bowl.

[–]El_Dumfuco 1 point2 points ago

"cómo te llamas"

"cómo se llama"

Pick one.

[–]TYBEEEZ 4 points5 points ago

That's incorrect. If u are going to use "te", it's llamaS. If u would've said "se" instead, then okay jajaja but ya it's incorrect... Sorry:/

It's a legit last name, a friend of mine has it. He's doing well for all I know.

[–]dhicks3 1 point2 points ago

See, English speakers love it because it means silly llama fun to them, but Spanish speakers like it because it really means flames.

[–]oskillator 0 points1 point ago
