Thanks for the repost! I shot all of these photos by using bulb mode on my Canon 5D Mk II with a 50mm lens. All exposures were different, as was the effect. Glad to see people enjoying creative photography!! Thanks again.

EDIT: Upon request, I can send you the full resolution photos of any one you select... It's too much work posting them all on Imgur, as each of them are about 50MB. Thanks again!!

The best show ever. Last year germany won, but this year China has a new pyrotechnic on their team and he boasts having some crazy new conceptual fireworks. I look forward to their performance on Saturday... but for now, tonight is Spain who is new to the competition!

Is the hexagon shaped projection's of each firework due to the camera lens?

Yep! The aperture / blades of the aperture that the camera lens is composed of will create this geometric shape from the light.

All you have to do is put your camera in Bulb mode, where you press and hold the shutter for as long of an exposure as you need. While the camera is exposed, turn the focus all the way from up close to infinity. It starts the explosion out of focus, and slowly brings it together to make this pointy ball effect.

Refocus your camera. (i hated myself with this comment.) I believe it is a long exposure (10 sec maybe) with focus tracking on. Nikon slrs' can do it easily. I might try it but I need to find some fireworks first.

Edit: Focus track is only available for video mode. weirdsun is right.

It's not really "refocusing", because you can't refocus with the shutter up. I'm think the term "focus pulling" would apply.

Why the hell not? If you have a focus ring on the lens (as is usual) it works independently of the shutter.

It is not focusing automatically, still. (I guess the subject is kind of automatic focusing.) What the photographer did was long exposure with manual focus change...

...the guy has a Canon 1D Mk II if I remember correctly, I would hope he knows how to manually focus it. Also, automatic focusing wasn't mentioned anywhere and his statement of "I refocused the camera during exposure" suggests he was talking about manual focus.

I don't see what zooming has to do with anything, and I don't know what "automatic zooming" would even be?

I assumed it is automatic. (yet, when I wrote that I was high.) Since the fireworks are too fast I would only be able to focus automatically. I guess(ed). (I am kind of ashamed that I make a living by taking photos.)

Because the shutter would be up and therefore blocking the view finder. Of couse you could figure out the focal length prior to taking the shot.
