I agree. I get scared in the deep end of a pool when I can't touch the bottom with my feet. That must be some kind of odd phobia

[–]a_fortunate_age 10 points11 points ago

I too get scared when I can't feel the bottom of the pool/lake/river when I swim. It sucks :(

[–]heartjuice 16 points17 points ago

Actually, I'm scared of the opposite as well and for a completely non-creepy reason.

I hate being able to touch the bottom and walking along the floor of lakes/beach water because I'm afraid if what I'll step on. Any sort of aquatic-wildlife that may harm me or I'm unsure of. Just weirds me out. Crabs, sting-rays, fish etc.

[–]DryZebra 11 points12 points ago

Me too. Except I'm afraid of both. I hate shallow because of rock fish. I hate the deep because Kraken. Pretty much anytime there is water, I'm uncomfortable.

[–]Evi1M4chine 7 points8 points ago

Even worse: Algae “tentacles” wrapping around my feet, and me getting stuck in some slings… Making it impossible to move upwards… and a wave every couple of seconds going over me, while I very slooowly suffocate and then drown…

[–]GeneralDisorder 0 points1 point ago

The key is not to panic. By the time you realize you're panicking it's probably too late.

[–]neverreadytoleave 9 points10 points ago

I have the same thing! I get panic attacks when I'm in any sort of open water, especially lakes and oceans but sometimes even deep pools.

[–]smellslikekevinbacon 2 points3 points ago

do you ever get scared zooming into the ocean on google maps?

[–]smbruck 3 points4 points ago

I know I do.

[–]Lairdom 12 points13 points ago

So what happens if you think about floating in space?

[–]Nillithwen 10 points11 points ago

Even worse :/

[–]Raelah 8 points9 points ago

I honestly love the idea of floating in space.... Alone... Nothing else around me for miles. Something I have never experienced and probably never will.

[–]SatyrMex 9 points10 points ago

I find that terrifying.

[–]coldvault 2 points3 points ago

Far more than miles, ma'am.

[–]jasontimmur 9 points10 points ago

It's still miles. Just a lot of them.

[–]Pyrelord 1 point2 points ago

and then die while entering the sun's corona best death ever

[–]senri 8 points9 points ago

Back in my younger days (about a year ago) the vastness of space really hit me one day while I was stargazing on a hill. I immediately broke down and began crying about my own insignificance and realizing how tiny I truly am. Then the vastness took a different turn into pure fear. Space is weird stuff.

[–]TLKoontz 0 points1 point ago

YES!

And, thinking about "forever" really scares the shit out of me, too. . . My head will begin to spin.

[–]blackmang 1 point2 points ago

I have a mild phobia of the deep ocean but for some reason the thought of floating around in space doesn't scare me at all; in fact, it appeals to me.

[–]Majordiarrhea 2 points3 points ago

I think I have the same phobia. I would rather float in space because there is nothing known out there that can eat you but in the ocean there could be something down below that you cannot see that would eat you if it was hungry.

[–]cheerbearsmiles 1 point2 points ago

Nothing known....doesn't mean there isn't something out there that could still eat you.

[–]sanctifiedaberration 1 point2 points ago

Surely you mean nothing will eat you . . . besides the ravenous vacuum of space . . .

[–]Skipperbta1 8 points9 points ago

This is irrelevant but I get extremely scared when I have to go back in a video game where I have already killed everything and I am all alone.

[–]Kwindecent_exposure 6 points7 points ago

There's a nosleep story about this with a emulated version of Mario. really.

[–]byeSpideR 5 points6 points ago

perhaps have a link to the story?

[–]jim888lu 3 points4 points ago

BIOSHOCK. All those creepy noises... had to run quickly and have my dog next to me.

[–]GeneralDisorder 0 points1 point ago

The first time I played the Suffering I played for three hours starting around 9PM. It was late summer so it was already dark by then. I'm sitting there creeping around, walking slowly and every single noise made me tense up.

After about 30 minutes in I settled in for a super creepy ride. Every time a new type of enemy came up I went right back to tensing up around every turn. If you've never played The Suffering (first one) they introduce new enemies for about the first two hours of gameplay.

So I'm sitting there watching the intro, knowing roughly what I'm getting myself into (a survival horror game). I'm thinking, "shit. These graphics are pretty good. Not Doom3 good but good."

Then the (SPOILER AHEAD) when the intro stops and the earthquake happens you see the flash of monster tear open the cell door and something kills the other guys one death row...

By that point I'm thinking "holy fucking shit. I... Wow." Bear in mind I was pretty stoned at the time and wearing headphones and by that time my cat came in touched my arm. I jumped. Not gonna lie. I jumped then realized it was the cat... Gave her love then played more of the game.

I probably took a smoke break about 20 minutes in to refresh my buzz and was right back to the "holy fucking shit" mode.

I also played Doom3 for the first time in the dark while high. It was more awesome than The Suffering first time through.

[–]EchoBlomp 2 points3 points ago

Actually, I also share this phobia. It's typically described as Bathophobia, or fear of depths.

[–]thislittlemonkey 2 points3 points ago

Here is a whole list of water associated phobias.

[–]casey825 0 points1 point ago

TIL what one of my phobias is called

[–]HawkUK 1 point2 points ago

Is it something like a fear of heights? Heights in air scare me a bit, but as I float just fine in water, I love it. No fear at all.

[–]ASkinForDancingIn 0 points1 point ago

[–]HawkUK 0 points1 point ago

Yup. That's scary. Could possibly do that if I had a harness...

[–]GeneralDisorder 0 points1 point ago

My daughter is 4. She's deathly afraid to try swimming. No idea why. She loves playing in the water. Once her feet can't touch, game over. She locks up, panics and starts to sink.

We bought her a float-vest thing... still no way in hell. I was pretty disappointed in myself for not teaching her to swim at an earlier age. Then again, poverty sucks when there are no free public pools for many miles.

[–]FullMoon1108 0 points1 point ago

I also have the aquabottom-phobia

[–]jim888lu 0 points1 point ago

The opposite of claustrophobia, [agoraphobia].(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agoraphobia)

[–]jim888lu 5 points6 points ago

After 3 years of being on reddit, I still don't know how to place a link in a word correctly...

[–]ResilientFellow 1 point2 points ago

Lol, you highlight a word, click link, and paste the address.

NSFW!

[–]Omegaman2010 6 points7 points ago

Yet again, Reddit proves that [NSFW] isn't always a good thing.

[–]ResilientFellow 2 points3 points ago

Ha Ha =D

[–]jim888lu 2 points3 points ago

TIL... hahaha

[–]jubjub2184 1 point2 points ago

Why didn't I believe you..

[–]wzmk2 1 point2 points ago

Nice trolling, sir, nice trolling.

[–]ResilientFellow 0 points1 point ago

I do try, on occasion.

[–]Evi1M4chine 1 point2 points ago

Use RES, mark a word, click on "Link" above, enter the URL, done.

You will then see it, and you can just type it yourself the next time, for added speed.

Although the Reddit syntax is seriously fucked up. Nearly as bad as Wiki syntax or Typoscript. Y U NO USE PLAIN OLD HTML? Or at least let me use it.

This way, I can’t even use emphasis markers inside words (the “si” should be fat)… or use stars like (←invisible star) or (←invisible star) where I like… or use the caret (here is where the caret should be visible→)←this bracket is supposed to be the closing one properly. It always becomes a horrible mess, because of in-band signaling.

Let alone the total joke of not being able to make a simple line break. Which is not the same as a new paragraph. And can not just be collapsed, since it contains structural meaning.

[–]jim888lu 0 points1 point ago

I'm slowly getting there... for now I got the link action down.

[–]alphazero924 0 points1 point ago

The answer to most of your problems is just using the escape character, which is a \ on reddit. However, your first complaint is answered by the fact that [link text](link) is a lot easier than <a href=link>link text</a>, and your last is answered by putting two spaces before hitting enter which is, again, a lot easier than the html alternative of </ br> or whatever it is now (I haven't done html in a while).

[–]smellslikekevinbacon 1 point2 points ago

not if he was saying the opposite of claustrophobia

[–]jim888lu 0 points1 point ago

Yep, could be either. But it doesn't seem like Nillithwen is scared of the actual water, but more of the vast, open feeling of the ocean or swimming pool.

[–]FireandBlood90 -1 points0 points ago

The fear of being classified as an aquaman fan

[–]persistent_illusion 1 point2 points ago

Agoraphobia is a little more complex than the etymology would suggest.

[–]dissident93 1 point2 points ago

actually this would be kenophobia

[–]Evi1M4chine -5 points-4 points ago

Another case of Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness.

In plain English:

  • fear of places (“agoraphobia”)
  • fear of being shut in (“claustrophobia”)

(Because place fear and shut-in fear aren’t really the English way, are they?)

[And I’m not even a native speaker. I just can’t stand when people try to elevate them by using pointlessly foreign and complicated words, because of their god complex.]

[–]jim888lu 1 point2 points ago

God complex seems a bit harsh.

Big words and reddit, you should get used to it. No one is trying to "elevate" themselves. I learned something new today, and hopefully someone did too.

Now I know that I can use sesquipedalian loquaciousness when I want to sound like a douche too.

[–]dissident93 0 points1 point ago

i thought it was a pretty common word?

he's wrong anyways, the phobia is called kenophobia

[–]crash_over-ride 12 points13 points ago

there's probably a fuckton of Oceanic Whitetips just out of camera range.

[–]TALegion 18 points19 points ago

This. Fear of, "open ocean," is pretty irrational, because there's never, "nothing." It's just a matter of how far you can see. It's like being in the woods in pitch-black night. It might feel like you're isolated, but you're probably surrounded by a bunch of other things. Just hope that you see them before they see you...

[–]Halbruder 21 points22 points ago

This doesn't make me feel better.

[–]-Nikolaus-[S] 4 points5 points ago

Now I'm more freaked out!

[–]FriesWithThat 11 points12 points ago

It's not even a matter of seeing. The moment you enter the water ocean currents start carrying the traces of your scent miles away to creatures that have evolved to sense smells in mere parts per billion. It's not unusual for sharks to still show up days after a shipwreck following the scent of oil in the water. Not to mention how well sound travels in water and unless you're Michael Phelps, you probably sound a whole lot like a struggling, wounded animal.

[–]TALegion 3 points4 points ago

Yeah, sharks are the probably the best example.

God forbid you're bleeding, they can literally smell you from 1-2 miles away... That shit cray.

[–]GeneralDisorder 0 points1 point ago

I see this come up occasionally and also see it corrected occasionally.

To be clear, a shark has a sense of smell that allows them to pick up a single drop of blood in parts per billion meaning when the blood from a wound enters the water it can travel as far as 2 miles without being too diluted for the shark to smell. They can smell blood from their prey at up to 2 miles from their prey but cannot smell blood from their prey 2 miles away from blood (as TALegion mentions in a reply below).

[–]jasontimmur 1 point2 points ago

I thought sharks could only metaphorically smell you.

[–]Ram1r3z 1 point2 points ago

Nope, they have super noses. Shit's scary.

[–]TALegion 0 points1 point ago

As Ram said, they have unbelievably powerful noses. Some of the most extreme species can smell a drop of blood about 1.5 miles away. They also have a sixth sense that allows them to feel the electricity given off by your body whenever you move. That's why people say to not move (if you can't get to safety, obviously) when a shark's nearby.

[–]jasontimmur 0 points1 point ago

It was a joke.

[–]lazycyclist 0 points1 point ago

Go on...

[–]ResilientFellow 2 points3 points ago

Fears don't have to be rational.

[–]TALegion 0 points1 point ago

I know. Sorry, I probably should've worded that differently. I meant to say something along the lines, "Nothing, to me, seems much less scary than if there is something around you..."

[–]ResilientFellow 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I gotcha, I just wanted to point that out.

[–]SatyrMex 2 points3 points ago

Thaks, I did not want to sleep tonight.

[–]Yggdrazzil 2 points3 points ago

Actually that is what I'm afraid of. Not the emptiness, but the idea of what kind of monster might be lurking just out of sight.

[–]jasontimmur 2 points3 points ago

but you're probably surrounded by a bunch of other things.

And they are all terrified of you. That's kind of comforting.

[–]a_tension_center 9 points10 points ago

That's exaxtly how I felt when I swam above the Marianas Trench. It's a humbling thought when you realize that there's more than 6 miles of water beneath you.

[–]Bwomper 0 points1 point ago

I was okay with this thread until now.

Fuuuuuuck that. My stomach is trying to crawl up my spine just thinking about it.

I'mma go find some pictures of cutethe cats doing weird stuff and try to think about anything but swimming.

[–]riceburner117 11 points12 points ago

http://www.damninteresting.com/the-call-of-the-bloop/ This is where my fear of open water came from. Still terrifies me every time I think about it.

[–]Doviwyn 19 points20 points ago

I like the vast, open spaces under the ocean. It's sort of beautiful knowing that your body is the only tangible thing around.

[–]goforce5 33 points34 points ago

that you know of...lol

too many terrifying experiences here:

  • When I was about 12 years old; I was out surfing in Northern San Diego and wanted to go out further than anyone in the water... Seemed like a great idea at the time; until I turned around and saw a fin hanging out about 10 feet with a huge brown // black body underneath... I start paddling back to the beach almost shitting myself and crying... It turned out it was a dolphin but holy crap that was ridiculous...

  • Age 16... I'm out underwater hunting with my dad for octopus and anything I can actually catch out in the Mediterranean. There are these cliffs underwater where we used to go where it gets insanely deep all the sudden (sometimes you can't even see the bottom)... Well anyway I dove down to check out this really crazy sea urchin I spotted... It was WAAAY bigger than the other ones in the area: purple with white tips. On my way back up, I am pretty much hugging the cliff and come face to face with an eel... PIC of type of eel in that area So as I'm slowly going back to the surface I come a foot away from that thing, with a mask magnifying it to look like Gyarados... I dropped my spear, took off the weights around my belt, and bolted back to the boat yelling some more...

Nothing really "harmful" but definitely scared now

[–]czarsmackey 2 points3 points ago

In case you or anyone else is wondering, that's a moray eel.

[–]morningsaystoidleon 2 points3 points ago

Thanks for sharing, I love stories like these.

[–]TALegion 2 points3 points ago

Eeels are the creepiest motherfuckers in the world...

[–]retronomicon 8 points9 points ago

But what you don't see here are millions of tiny planktons in the picture

[–]Anaphase 7 points8 points ago

You wouldn't like space.

[–]phytzee 11 points12 points ago

but, but no sharks in space right?

[–]TALegion 8 points9 points ago

Space sharks, the new era of fear...

[–]IanL27 2 points3 points ago

Don't worry, upon entry they burn up in the atmosphere and all that is left are some charred remains and sometimes nothing depending on the side. The government taught us these are actually meteors/metiorites. But we know the real truth behind it all.

[–]phytzee 0 points1 point ago

(shudder)

[–]jasontimmur 2 points3 points ago

Candygram!

[–]phytzee 0 points1 point ago

i'm not letting you in

[–]MeltBanana 0 points1 point ago

The thought of floating through space pleases my mind...open ocean does the opposite.

[–]Jaketh 6 points7 points ago

Not entirely empty...

[–]UnknownUser404 20 points21 points ago

It's not empty, it's full of water.

But seriously, large open bodies of water freak me the-actual-fuck out.

[–]phytzee 6 points7 points ago

totally freaky that there are animals in the ocean that never touch anything but open water. no hard surfaces, no other animals, no land. i don't like open water.

[–]GeneralDisorder 1 point2 points ago

When whales die their bodies often don't float to the surface. Instead their bodies sink down to what's known as the abyssal plain. This would be so deep that the light from the sun doesn't reach.

I'm glad I'm not a whale.

[–]phytzee 0 points1 point ago

abyssal plain. i wonder if it would be like sitting in that sound proof room that drives everyone crazy after 20 minutes. i too am glad i'm not a whale.

[–]darkreality20 4 points5 points ago

OP: What about the sky?

I think the thing about oceans isn't just the flat dimensions you can see, but the actual depth. You know that trench in the Atlantic is six miles deep. Can you imagine?

But when we fly, typical airlines coast at around 36,000 feet, or so (It's been a few years since I flew). That's 5-6 miles. The sky has the same depth -- more or less. And if you want to perceive the actual depth of the sky, lay on your back outside. It's almost intoxicating.

I think space would have to be the worst. Sky is just up, the ocean is basically down. In space you can have six miles of nothing all around you -- or much more. Any episode of Star Trek, Stargate, Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, whatever, when they're out in the middle of f&%king nowhere and they lose power (only to be saved at the last minute, LOL) it gets me thinking.

No fear on my part. Just contemplation.

[–]-Nikolaus-[S] 0 points1 point ago

I get that similar gut feeling when floating and looking at the sky. When your mind comes untethered from earth, it's always unsettling.

[–]vonReimo 3 points4 points ago

Kenophobia.

[–]TexMexxx 4 points5 points ago

whats with the "sheer emptiness of the sky"? Why does nobody freak out because of this?

[–]NeroJoe 7 points8 points ago

Visibility.

When you're swimming in the ocean you have no idea what is nearby.

[–]enderxeno 5 points6 points ago

Not many things can maneuver that well in the sky too. Not many killer birds. But there's tons of dangerous sea shit. And they all move better than you.

[–]wzmk2 2 points3 points ago

Because we are sucked on safely by planet earth?

[–]naboobies 3 points4 points ago

I find that comforting. I love thinking about space and how vast it is and how meaningless and small we are in comparison. It's so relaxing. =

[–]GeneralDisorder 1 point2 points ago

Yes. I suppose it could be a relief knowing that everything we accomplish in live and everything we experience essentially becomes meaningless when compared to the vastness of space.

[–]naboobies 1 point2 points ago

Exactly! It's soothing.

[–]Yggdrazzil 2 points3 points ago

Saw the picture before the caption.

instant sweat on my back, hairs in my neck up, etc

This is the stuff of nightmares.

For clarification, this is why.

[–]squeeeeenis 4 points5 points ago

Dood, my heart drops every-time I see an image like this, I have no Idea why.

[–]U4IC 2 points3 points ago

I know its like everything in the ocean stops what there doing and looks at you...... Freaks the fuck out of me...

[–]readingnow 2 points3 points ago

That is terror

[–]NeroJoe 2 points3 points ago

OMG one of the most eerie feelings of all is to tread water and only see gloomy darkness below.

[–]Firerange 2 points3 points ago

This Scares the shit out of me, literally to a point i'm shaking. people who have this open water syndrome should NOT click the link. it's a free dive into the "blue hole"...seriously, i'm warning you. it scares the shit out of me.

[–]sweet_sparrow 0 points1 point ago

Nope. Fuck everything about that.

[–]serosis -3 points-2 points ago

Video is fake, says so in the description.

[–]Firerange 1 point2 points ago

it says it's a project. also who cares if its fake, i'm just trying to get the point across of this.

[–]turtletots 3 points4 points ago

Oceans? Empty?

[–]Raelah 0 points1 point ago

My first thought

[–]lotus_leaf 1 point2 points ago

This. I don't know why you're being downvoted. The ocean is far from being empty. It's filled with wondrous creatures that we never get to really appreciate because we're land-mammals.

[–]tehkoal -1 points0 points ago

Agreed!

[–]Ace1999 1 point2 points ago

Got Jaws?

[–]RowdyMrBaute 0 points1 point ago

it scares me when i watch deadliest catch, or see the perfect storm. To know just how big something like that is, the feeling of being so small freaks me the fuck out.

[–]foursecondpin 1 point2 points ago

You are swimming a giant dish of Whale Shark, Basking Shark and Megamouth Shark food.

[–]___Alex___ 5 points6 points ago

I thought Whale Sharks were harmless and that you could actually ride one if you wanted to, no? :o

[–]Ram1r3z 2 points3 points ago

He means plankton. You are swimming in plankton.

[–]___Alex___ 0 points1 point ago

I didn't catch that, I read it wrong. My apologies!

[–]Ram1r3z 0 points1 point ago

It's okay.

[–]___Alex___ 0 points1 point ago

Happy Cake Day, by the way!

[–]cheerbearsmiles 0 points1 point ago

In theory, yes, but they're still rather large. One swipe of the tail into your side would probably end you.

[–]___Alex___ 0 points1 point ago

That is true, but at least they don't go after people normally... That would be horrifying...

[–]morningfog 0 points1 point ago

they're not empty you know, they're full of vast amounts of creatures. Right beneath you.

[–]saveface 0 points1 point ago

My greatest fear

[–]Evi1M4chine 0 points1 point ago

x-post?

How??

[–]DBH114 1 point2 points ago

Just remember, when your out in the middle of the ocean your never more than 6 or so miles from land at the most. Of course it's under all the water but it's still there.

[–]Raelah 0 points1 point ago

But oceans aren't empty. You're surrounded by so much life it's creepy! Whether you see/feel or not. For me... The idea of not knowing what's around me freaks me out

[–]YummyCultist 0 points1 point ago

[–]LnRon 1 point2 points ago

This is why I am scared of water, there is so much of it, its overwhelming. I think I wouldn't be scared about tropical areas, but I havent been to one. Just cold, large areas of water freak me out.

[–]metalmasterloz 1 point2 points ago

I used to be afraid of the deep blue, so I took up scuba diving a year ago. Now = not afraid, just intrigued. Went diving in the red sea up to 100ft depths, staring into the blue is amazing. You knew the sea floor was up to 1km below.. But the depth just wasn't an issue anymore. I would recommend scuba to anyone who's afraid of deep, open water. It worked for me! Pic Related

[–]anthonyisageek 1 point2 points ago

We know less about our own ocean, which covers 71% of the earth, than we do space. Relevant because both are vast voids, in similar but different senses.

[–]serosis 0 points1 point ago

I am freaked out by the exact opposite, the ocean is not as empty as you think it is. Does not stop me from frolicking in the waves but once I see something I do not want to see I run out of that water like I am about to die.

Then I go back in and repeat the process. How else am I suppose to face my fears?

[–]KaylaAnne 1 point2 points ago

This is my desktop right now, no joke. Perfectly illustrates how life makes me feel right now...

[–]twarmus 0 points1 point ago

Dude this is awesome. I wish you had made it larger so it could be used as a screen background!

[–]AvesAkiari 0 points1 point ago

As a registered diver, I have looked at this with my own eyes. I can tell you I have never seen anything scarier than looking off into some blue void. Anything could come out at you. ANYTHING. My mind had me think of giant sharks, and what else, which I have a fear of. Quite unpleasant.

[–]Knocturne 0 points1 point ago

How eerie. I would be shitting myself..

[–]hquarterz 0 points1 point ago

We could fill the empty space with sharks if you prefer

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

the thing I fear the most is being eaten by a giant squid. you are just swimming along then this huge tentacle shoots up from nowhere and wraps around your leg and begins pulling you down into the darkness. the pressure builds in your skull each second that passes and then the beast wraps itself around you and its like trying to fight your way out of a 1000 wet blankets, the suction cups sticking to you and squeezing the life from you, all while being drug down further to crushing depth. then the beak appears, and since its underneath you, it bits off your dick and then half of your stomach is missing. eaten slowly at crushing pressure of the ocean by a giant squid. worst fear ever.

[–]lush1984 0 points1 point ago

The thought of being in space and holding onto an aircraft, knowing that if you let go and the life support failed, you'd be floating out there with no getting back and seeing your world underneath you, that really makes me feel icky. The same as diving in from a diving board into a pool used for divers or scuba divers (the ones that are more than 8 metres deep) makes me feel sick. I also used to fear going in the middle of the big playground when I was 4 or 5, because I would always get dizzy with all the space and I'd fall over.

[–]DeadJethro 0 points1 point ago

Scares the shit out of me too.. That something can be so immense and you can't ever really know what's down there

[–]Kismonos 0 points1 point ago

I'd need much more pictures likes this. Kind of freaks me out but I love the big open waters that creeps off like fuck. Any links appreciated, I mean, relevants.

[–]pookabunny 0 points1 point ago

I have the same phobia. I think it started when I was a little kid and I watched a documentary about the Titanic in an IMAX theatre. I had an irrational fear of the Titanic's creepiness coming out of the water and attacking me or something of the sorts for the longest time lol

[–]madsci_2000 0 points1 point ago

I dove to 90 feet fro teh 2st time Saturday. One thing I learned was not to look up. When I did I felt panic set in.

[–]Mrkinkykent 0 points1 point ago

I can stand swimming in the deep side of a pool, but when it comes to a lake/pond/ocean, i freak out.

[–]Chilly73 0 points1 point ago

This, I think, is one of the creepiest pictures I've ever seen. Damn

[–]scouragestar99 0 points1 point ago

Imagine, floating around in space, sure everything is beautiful, but eventually you will start to starve, dehydration hits you quickly, you're freezing. An idea hits you, rather than dying of dehydration, starvation, and freezing to death, you could just tear off part of your suit, suffocate yourself.

While in the ocean, you can either hope that a boat or an island is nearby, or you can cut your hand and have a shark eat you instead of drowning or starving.

Or, you can stay on land like man is meant to be.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one!

I've had this awful vision in my head where I'm swimming in the middle of the ocean, and a gigantic whale just swims on by... Gives me shivers whenever I think about it.

The part in castaway where the whale comes up and looks at tom hanks made me scared of whales, and even more terrified of the ocean.

I'm a lifeguard, swimming teacher, former competitive swimmer, and avid beach goer. I live for water, and I certainly have no trouble swimming. But the thought of being in the ocean unprotected, or even a large lake where I can't touch the bottom, scares the everloving fuck out of me. I can pinpoint this fear to my repeated thoughts when in a deep body of water that go along the lines of "what if a huge fucking creature comes out of nowhere, right now". I can usually handle deep 12-16ft pools but they still make me uncomfortable, even though I know that there can't possibly be crazy creatures in a swimming pool.

Yep... It's kinda breathtaking sometimes... I remember the first time I stood on the beach in Virginia... Just staring out into the Atlantic... That feeling of just how small we really are... It was incredible..

What really wigs me out though, is when you look closely at just how small the Earth is, and just how fucking vast and empty space is..

Someone should photoshop this with some artwork so that you scroll down for a few minutes to see some monster jaws at the bottom.

It isn't the water that freaks me out, its just what's inside of the water that creeps me out.

[–]Neutrino_1 0 points1 point ago

This is my biggest fear, also those creepy fish down below. Is this a phobia?

[–]UsagiYokai 0 points1 point ago

I feel like I should paint my own version of this image...

[–]kindpastor 0 points1 point ago

If this freaks you out, do not watch Pandorum (2009). There is a particular scene that will get to you.

[–]heartjuice 2 points3 points ago

I can't recall what scene you're referring to. Spoiler tag it?

[–]___Alex___ 0 points1 point ago

WARNING: SPOILERS! I don't know how to black out spoilers so I'll link to a picture of the plot instead. I believe kindpastor was refering to this part of the film.

[–]heartjuice 1 point2 points ago

Ohhh yeah.

That's a major spoiler though, so anyone casually reading this that hasn't seen the movie, do not read the image!

I thought Pisces people had to be super swimmers who can breathe underwater and chill with sharks.

[–]Patricko96 1 point2 points ago

Well I know I can.

[–]ResilientFellow 0 points1 point ago

I'm a Scorpio, so all I get is poison immunity and I can talk to scorpions.

[–]Patricko96 1 point2 points ago

Well I'm like aquaman I can talk to sharks but I don't have any real powers.
