Also to every GLBTQ controversy the pops up.

Oh shit hit there's a Q now? How long have I been gone? What is it?

[–]MynameisIsis 0 points1 point ago

Actually, there's a sort of debate over all the extra letters, for people that are born intersexual, third gender, gender-less, asexual, pansexual, and alternative marriages, among others. There's also a schism between the people who think that kink falls under lgbt rights and those who don't. Personally, my favorite acronym is QUILTBAG.

Derp forgot to actually answer the question; Q stands for queer.

:D Cheers!

One of my biggest pet peeves about /r/atheism is the unwarranted belief that science belongs to atheists.

[–]EvOllj 9 points10 points ago

science leads to atheism

[–]ThatCanuck 3 points4 points ago

I disagree. Although they are few and far between, some theists actually do have a healthy appreciation of science and have lots to contribute, and it doesn't derail their beliefs at all.

[–]EvOllj 2 points3 points ago

theyre doing it wrong

[–]mastersoup 1 point2 points ago

...yeah... about that. those are the people that value the god of the gaps. theyre not the kind of people i would say are valuable to science.

As soon as you are attributing something in this universe to god, you're not doing science. If your god acts outside of the universe, then it's outside of science.

I don't know which type prevails, but I never cold understand either of it. Although I think that the first type is stupid.

I refuse to believe that every single scientific advancement in history was made by an atheist. I'm just saying that believing in a god doesn't stop you from looking in a microscope and documenting the stages of mitosis and drawing a conclusion about cell development (as an example). And don't get me wrong, I am atheist (just one who loves to play devil's advocate - pun not intended).

[–]SiS-Shadowman 0 points1 point ago

Ofcourse not. Take Newton for example. He believed in god and nevertheless explained gravity. However he failed to understand that Newtonian gravity can also explain the n-body problem. It was his understanding that god was responsible for holding the planets together, because they could not maintain stable orbits (whereas it's easy for the 2 body problem). However just some years afterwars, some smart mathematician was able to figure out why our planet orbits are stable.

I am paraphrasing from Neil de grasse Tyson: he brought that up during one of his presentations. His point was that although Newton was smart, he attributed something he couldn't understand to god. If Newton wouldn't have attributed it to god, then he might have figured it out himself....

I think it's not unreasonable that a belief in god (or any other strong beliefs) will hold you back on your scientific journey, simply because you wont look beyond that.

tldr: my point never was that you need to be an atheist in order to advance your scientific understanding, but that your belief will probably hold you back (if your belief is connected to the physical world).

Thanks for the clarification - I wholeheartedly agree that the go to answer for things that cannot be explained shouldn't be "god did it" by default.

[–]AntiChoice -3 points-2 points ago

You obviously do not understand science.
