[–]Kylskap 1 point2 points ago

Fucking southern hemisphere, who does it work?

[–]GreenStrong 44 points45 points ago

Lions used to range all over Europe and North America, during a climate regime similar to our own, or colder. They were actually the widest ranging large mammal, until another predator showed up and outcompeted them for prey. The lion's endurance in Africa is probably mostly because the herbivores had time to adapt to evolving humans.

[–]danE3030 12 points13 points ago

This is very interesting, I'd like to read more; source?

The lion's endurance in Africa is probably mostly because the herbivores had time to adapt to evolving humans.

Is this true? I'm not doubting you, just curious.

[–]I_decide_up_or_down 10 points11 points ago

this was posted a while ago. I couldn't find the article with the theory that elephants co-evolved with humans and learned to stay the fuck away from us, when the human race spread out roughly 40,000 years ago none of the other Megafauna had this natural fear of us so they were essentially like walk up buffets.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

We might be mostly hairless, apes with no teeth or claws....but you see us coming, you stay the fuck away or run as fast as you can.

[–]Ghooble 1 point2 points ago

Says the Rapture

[–]ave0000 0 points1 point ago

Indeed.

[–]sunnydaisy 0 points1 point ago

Man-eaters have been a recurrent problem for India, especially in Kumaon, Garhwal and the Sundarbans mangrove swamps of Bengal. Here some healthy tigers have been known to hunt humans. Even though tigers usually avoid elephants, they have been known to jump over elephant's backs and severely harm the mahout riding on the elephant's back.

TIL.

[–]GreenStrong 5 points6 points ago

Bit if a long article, but it addresses both points: http://www.conservationmagazine.org/2008/07/where-the-wild-things-were/

The idea that African mmegafauna survived because they were adapted to humans is difficult to prove or disprove, since there is no untouched continent full of megafauna to experiement upon. But if you read up a bit on megafauna extinctions, there were beasts the size of elephants and rhinos on every continent, and they disappeared at almos the same time modern humans showed up (It was also a climate shift). Not just wooly mammoths, or the weird megafauna of Australia, but horses and camels were extirpated from North and South America.

[–]danE3030 2 points3 points ago

Thank you for the source, this is fascinating. I find it of particular interest that the megafauna of Africa was able to adapt a surviving strategy as homo erectus/habilis slowly evolved into homo sapiens sapiens. If the megafauna of other continents didn't stand a chance, it's pretty impressive that these species managed to stay alive (assuming that's the main factor).

I wonder too if conditions weren't more ideal for humans in those other continents where they hunted the native megafauna to extinction; I suppose we'll never really know, but speculating is fun!

[–]GreenStrong 2 points3 points ago

I think there is a real mystery how horses and camels were eradicated, by either climate change or by hungry humans. They're both extremely tough and adaptable to climate, and probably hard to hunt without firearms.

The notion that they didn't recognise humans as a threat seems absurd at first, but any other theory is problematic too.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

Human is the only predator that can outrun any other animal on the planet. Sure many animals are faster than us, but no animal except the horse has the endurance as we can have.

Persistence hunting is thought to have been the first method of hunting large prey animals as humans.

[–]GreenStrong 0 points1 point ago

Horses were hunted to extinction, and they can not only match a human in a persistence hunt, but they generally run in packs and are well known to turn and fight predators. As I pointed out in another reply, wild horses thrive anywhere grass exists, they are incredibly tolerant of climate.

Persistence hunting is mainly practiced in places where quality bow wood is scarce. I thinkbow and arrows were established when humans reached N. America, atlatl spear throwers capable of killing a mammoth certainly were. Interestingly, the best bow wood in North America is osage orange, which was nearly extinct when Eurpeans brought horses back- there was no animal in North America that ate the fruit and spread the seeds. (farmers also spread them intentionally, as a living fence).

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Horses that fight instead of run? I've never seen or heard that happen. Only that they get scared extremely easily (being flight animals as they are) and just start running away like mad.

[–]Derhg 0 points1 point ago

Sled dogs can run for a day in snow without tiring, and as fast as a fast jog at that. A human would have to run 3 marathons in 8 hours to cath up with them.

[–]I_decide_up_or_down 0 points1 point ago

One theory from that article "the grassy Siberian steppe that once fed musk oxen, mammoths, and wild horses was fed in return by the megafauna. (4) Their manure fertilized the grasses, and their hooves trampled the competing mosses."

[–]GreenStrong 0 points1 point ago

Horses thrive in any grassland climate, including arid regions. Wild horses are all over the American Southwest, and they would be all over the Midwest if it wasn't cropland. Camels inhabit arid areas that humans can't even access without pack animals to carry water. (People used to cross the Sahara with mules and oxen, but it was nearly impossible)

I don't think there is any part of North America that is accessible to camels and completely inacessible to humans, and I don't know if there was such an area when the Ice Age was ending. My point is that it must have taken a shitload of determination to hunt the last breeding pair down in their last hideout.

[–]I_decide_up_or_down 0 points1 point ago

I don't know enough about the specific animals that went extinct. It could have been that they were specifically adapted to a certain habitat that was destroyed or significantly altered by the presence of humans. Obviously the wild horses we have now were some tough and adaptable sonsofguns. Maybe they just out competed their kin, much like we did with our Neanderthal brethren. (Granted we ate our brethren)

[–]MyMomSlapsMe 1 point2 points ago

Almost anything becomes easy to hunt if you have 5-10 humans who know how to work together

[–]FuzzyLog1cZA 0 points1 point ago

Africa has lots of other stuff that's easier to eat then lions. Far simpler to kill a zebra since it won't rip your head off.

Also find this interesting since England use the lion as a national symbol yet I can't think of a less likely place to actually find one. Does anyone have a credible source to why England uses the lion symbol?

I did find this which basically states it's cos they couldn't find anything local which espoused the desired traits.

[–]EOTWAWKI 1 point2 points ago

Interestingly, lions and tigers had a common ancestor only 3 million years ago - they can produce offspring together they are so similar. (Not sure if the offspring are sterile?) Yet their range is very different now, they don't occur in the same places. I assume at one point there would have been both lions and tigers in western India general region.

[–]stufff 2 points3 points ago

The offspring are sterile.

[–]zburnham 1 point2 points ago

Nope:

Fertility

The fertility of hybrid big cat females is well documented across a number of different hybrids. This is in accordance with Haldane's rule: in hybrids of animals whose sex is determined by sex chromosomes, if one sex is absent, rare or sterile, it is the heterogametic sex (the one with two different sex chromosomes e.g. X and Y).

According to Wild Cats of the World (1975) by C. A. W. Guggisberg, ligers and tiglons were long thought to be sterile: in 1943, a fifteen-year-old hybrid between a lion and an 'Island' tiger was successfully mated with a lion at the Munich Hellabrunn Zoo. The female cub, though of delicate health, was raised to adulthood.[8]

So it sounds like you're half right.

[–]Rather_Dashing 1 point2 points ago

There are still both lions and tigers in India

[–]ragingRobot 13 points14 points ago

is this normal?..

[–]DavidPx 13 points14 points ago

SA gets fairly cold in the winter, especially in higher parts of the country. Snow is still pretty rare but not unheard of.

[–]exxocet 6 points7 points ago

It snows every year in parts, they have a ski resort. It is not considered normal in the city of johannesburg.

[–]THcB 1 point2 points ago

HAD a ski resort. Was run into the ground. Nearest ski resort now is in Lesotho - Afriski

[–]exxocet 0 points1 point ago

I heard Lew Campbell got it for nothing and plans to reopen by next season.

[–]THcB 0 points1 point ago

Cool! Would be nice to visit Tiffendell again!

[–]WhitestAfrican 0 points1 point ago

I went there last year, pretty nice ski resort awesome personnel. We went there two days before they opened, dad and I were the only ones there. Felt special we got to eat with the employees and had an awesome time.

[–]anarchyrabbit 1 point2 points ago

Very rare in Johannesburg and other places it snowed in today. I've seen icy rain once in my city before today and that's it (Pretoria not too far from Johannesburg)

[–]loveandpolitics 4 points5 points ago

Psh it snows all the time in Johannesburg. Sometimes twice in a decade!

[–]Gdsduf 2 points3 points ago

1997 was the last time jhb got snow, before that it was sometime in the 1981. So rather rare.

[–]BAM225 14 points15 points ago

the polar bear must be thinking, "Ohh my, I'm home!!".... sorry buddy.

[–]Ddickerson03 8 points9 points ago

Any time someone says "oh my" I say it in my head like George takei

[–]LonelyNixon 1 point2 points ago

Some wordplay involving the bear and manly gay man variant of bear.

[–]TheBB 0 points1 point ago

It's probably never even been "home."

I couldn't find specifics, but there are two polar bears in Johannesburg (actually, in all of Africa), and they came there when six months old from Canada and Japan respectively. Depending on how you define "home," Canada might work, but even so, wild polar bears are far, far away from the zoos.

[–]rscott89 52 points53 points ago

the lion is like da fuck is this shit?

[–]Dinosaur_Monstertrux 31 points32 points ago

I'm guessing he's thinking "Damn, I'm glad they feed me in here, because I would never find a zebra in this shit."

[–]Hansaman 20 points21 points ago

... I would never find a zebra in this shit.

While funny, a zebra does not need snow to hide.

Zebra camouflage works because lions are colour-blind.

[–]implicate 9 points10 points ago

[–]caramelappleyum 2 points3 points ago

[–]phagemasterflex 5 points6 points ago

Apparently, it's snowed 23 times in the last 103 years in Johannesburg. My question is how are the drivers handling it?

[–]aburk1021 5 points6 points ago

Not that well. Last year was the most snow weve had in 50 years and lots of tge roads were closed and there were thousands trapped in their cars on the side of the road for 4 days.

[–]Gdsduf 1 point2 points ago

What are you talking about? Where are you talking about? Not jhb I take it

[–]aburk1021 3 points4 points ago

no this was more near pietermaritzburg. And i exagerrated it a liitle bit, it wasnt thousands but it was still a lot of people.

[–]Gdsduf 1 point2 points ago

Aaah, of course.

[–]mammalsauce 5 points6 points ago

I like this.

[–]meancommentredditor 1 point2 points ago

Me and my teacher were having an argument yesterday because she didn't believe that it was cold in South Africa. BITCH HERE'S MY PROOF

[–]SourShark 2 points3 points ago

this reminds me of a small story i want to share with ya'll.

So one day me and two friends are getting some delicious 5$ foot-longs kinda late at night. while we were ordering, this kid walks in, short fat orange haired kid. He starts going ballistic over everything, cussin up a storm, and baning on shit. Since it was late, we didnt want to get shot up so we left and started to walk out to our car. about 4 seconds after we exit the building, the kid runs past us to the sidewalk near the road, stops, stares at the billboard with Aslan on it, and screams at the top of his lungs "FUCK YOU, ASLAN!" then proceeds to skip down the sidewalk, no other words or anything.

This picture reminded me of that day.

[–]Keirhan 2 points3 points ago

A few months in, it snowed in Joburg for the first time in seventeen years. Poor mom!

[–]TheeObskure 1 point2 points ago

dunno that it's a big deal or not, as i'm not familiar with what the weather in Joburg is like this time of year, but it's snowing...in South Africa...on a lion. That's pretty keen, IMHO
