This reminds me of something i read about in TIL sometime back. There was a ghost ship just creeping around the shores of alaska for decades, abandoned in 1931 and last sighted in 1969. Heres the Wiki page.

[–]Anglewings 31 points32 points ago

"March 1933, she was found by a group of Eskimos who boarded her and were trapped on-board for 10 days by a freak storm." This could be a good movie.

[–]fuzzydice_82 2 points3 points ago

watch "ghost ship"

[–]squitoface 11 points12 points ago

Worst movie of all time. OF ALL TIME!

[–]two2teps 5 points6 points ago

Its a member of the Parthenon of Millennial Horror including:

  • 13 Ghosts
  • The Haunting
  • The House on Haunted Hill

[–]darkpaladin 0 points1 point ago

The original house on haunted hill is pretty quality.

That being said, I have a thing for high budget low quality horror movies. In the last 20 years those are some quality additions.

[–]two2teps 0 points1 point ago

So much mediocre CG and Matthew Lillard.

[–]I_fail_at_memes 3 points4 points ago

First ten minutes were AWESOME. Should have started rolling the credits right then and there.

[–]flipswitch 0 points1 point ago

Watching an entire party get guillotined by a rogue wire was one of the coolest scenes in b-horror movie history.

[–]fuzzydice_82 -3 points-2 points ago

still better lovestory than twilight

[–]junkytrunks 12 points13 points ago

I knew of this, but I love being reminded of it from time to time.

The story says the Alaskan govt began a search for it starting in 2006.

I do wonder if Alaskan tax dollars would be better spent elsewhere, however. Not sure what the point of spending millions to find a rusting hulk at the bottom of the sea is.

[–]garethashenden 10 points11 points ago

Because ice looks largely the same we need a point of reference to see how it moves. A ship can provide that reference because we know where it started or where it was last time someone saw it.

[–]The_Poop_King 5 points6 points ago

Or... we could just use our knowledge of currents, that being said I think ghost ships are awesome and would love to find one.

[–]SpottieOttieDopa 6 points7 points ago

I think finding a ghost ship would be pretty creepy, like something out of a horror movie

[–]jbg830 2 points3 points ago

I agree. When I was a kid my family and I used to go up to Canada every summer to stay somewhere off the Northern Channel. It was a place called St. Josephs Island. Anyway, as my dad tells it, the only way to get onto to this island for years was to take a ferry across the Desbarats river. The bridge they built had this little cove just to the side of it, and at the bottom was a sunken tugboat. It was one of the most eerie things to go check out. We would take our boat over, my dad would cut the engine and lift it and we would just float over it, and I would get chills every single time.

[–]organasm 4 points5 points ago

lik dis if u gt chills evertim

[–]TotesFleisch 4 points5 points ago

I'm no expert, but I think a GPS spike in one of the said ice patches could be way easier to track than a sunken ghost ship- much the same way they track migration patters for marine life.

[–]QuerulousPanda 1 point2 points ago

Batteries or solar panels aren't gonna die on a sunken ship. That's about the only reason I can think of why this would be a better idea than an active GPS device as you suggest...

[–]junkytrunks 2 points3 points ago

I think you accidentally a word there in the first sentence. Can you edit for clarity?

So are you thinking that finding this ship might be scientifically beneficial in some way regarding ice floes?

EDIT: OK. Now it makes sense.

[–]garethashenden 1 point2 points ago

Thanks. It should be clearer now.

[–]GammaGames 2 points3 points ago

they could go build bridges or something

[–]alaskaman42 2 points3 points ago

its not "a rusting hulk at the bottom of the sea". ghost ship could also mean afloat, so it could be still floating or frozen somewhere out there. imagine finding an abandoned ship that size and searching it. scary movie plot!

[–]alwaysdriven 1 point2 points ago

Look up a game called "Cryostasis." Scary as fuck.

[–]coppeis 2 points3 points ago

One guy and a heli an't that much

[–]junkytrunks 1 point2 points ago

lots and lots of shoreline to cover though.

[–]coppeis 1 point2 points ago

Still

[–]smoothtrip 1 point2 points ago

Well, a floating abandoned ship can be fairly dangerous to active sea vessels. That is why countries will often sink floating abandoned ships in deep waters to protect other sea vessels.

Such as: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/05/ghost-ship-sinking-us-sink-boat-japan-tsunami_n_1405768.html

If it sunk near a trading route, it could be an underwater hazard depending on where it is located.

[–]illaqueable 1 point2 points ago

Because Titanic

[–]misterbrisby 2 points3 points ago

Other ghost ship near Alaska: In April this year, the US Coast Guard sunk a japanese ghost ship near Alaska. The ship was drifting around since the tsunami. Story here: http://news.ca.msn.com/canada/japanese-ghost-ship-sunk-off-alaska-1

[–]V_for_VinceVega 52 points53 points ago

I'd properly shit myself if I saw that beneath me whilst swimming.

[–]junkytrunks 15 points16 points ago

There was a huge thread about just this (shitting oneself) in the thread two months ago. Great stories about wrecks in shallow waters in Lake Michigan. Give it a read.

[–]V_for_VinceVega 2 points3 points ago

will do thanks

[–]junkytrunks 4 points5 points ago

Here is one comment from that thread to get you started:

http://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/uk9yb/trapped_under_the_antarctic_ice/c4w60sx

here is another section of that thread regarding "scary shit seen below while swimming in water."

http://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/uk9yb/trapped_under_the_antarctic_ice/

[–]AuroraMineCraft 2 points3 points ago

Lake Michigan has all kinds of crazy shit in it.

[–]IgotNukes 25 points26 points ago

you simply do not swim in antartica

[–]dark_mirage 5 points6 points ago

Major shrinkage would follow.

[–]supaphly42 1 point2 points ago

Inversion, probably.

[–]Amazon_Ref_Link 0 points1 point ago

I heard that guy was a dick.

[–]Bipolarruledout 4 points5 points ago

Do you do a lot of swimming in Antarctica?

[–]remondo 4 points5 points ago

Me too, something about shipwrecks creeps me out, it's the only phobia I have.

[–]fuego_suizo 1 point2 points ago

There really is something scary about sunken ships. Half a year ago I saw a 15 Meter wreck in Panama at about 10 Meters deep. We made a test of courage about who would dive down and put his head into the wreck first. Almost gave me a heart attack..

[–]OnCallHero 20 points21 points ago

/r/shipwrecks for more.

[–]gravey727 2 points3 points ago

if i go on this i wont be able to sleep after

[–]dubeskin 0 points1 point ago

Definitely one of the cooler subreddits I've chanced upon.

[–]OnCallHero 0 points1 point ago

too bad it's so inactive.

[–]MrMelty 40 points41 points ago

Yeah, stunning unless you're the owner of the fucking boat.

[–]Dreamwaltzer 22 points23 points ago

Pretty sure that I'll be stunned if I went off and found my fucking boat sunk.

[–]rodgeramjit 11 points12 points ago

In this haunting image by Ruslan Eliseev, we see the sunken remains of the 76-ft Mar Sem Fin, a Brazillian boat that was used for scientific and educational expeditions. The boat, which sunk on April 7, 2012, lies at a depth of about 9 meters (30 ft) in Ardley Bay, Antarctica. Thankfully the crew was completely evacuated and nobody was hurt. For a blog post that documents the actual sinking of the ship, check out this blog (in Russian).

Details courtesy of twistedsifter.com

[–]QuerulousPanda 0 points1 point ago

I wonder, if the thing is that close to the surface, why wouldn't they bother to raise it up? Was the hull damage too extensive?

[–]rodgeramjit 2 points3 points ago

Why would they bother to raise it up? The scientists in Antarctica have better things to do with their time than sunken boat repair, it's a bit far for your average salvager to travel and it's unlikely they have the right vehicles to bring it up in the first place. It just doesn't makes sense to try.

[–]QuerulousPanda 2 points3 points ago

I guess that's a good point... I was just thinking about the value of the boat, but I didn't factor in the distance related costs in the salvage operation.

[–]cupofchupachups 1 point2 points ago

A surprisingly fast capitulation for a user with "querulous" in the name!

[–]QuerulousPanda 1 point2 points ago

Haha, perhaps... Now, the real question is, did you know the word before you saw my name or did you look it up after? I suspect the former! :)

[–]cupofchupachups 0 points1 point ago

The former! I am a bit of a word nerd, a habit which has accelerated since getting a Kindle...

[–]realblackperson 9 points10 points ago

Look around, Captain Fucking America might still be alive in there...

[–]Methedras 1 point2 points ago

He flew the boat into the water? He really is good.

[–]Strug-ga-ling 23 points24 points ago

AH! This kinda thing is my phobia...large things underwater/deep water in general. Tell me I'm not alone...

I'm just gonna NOPE on out of here now.

[–]Coherent 8 points9 points ago

Haha I have the large things underwater/deep water phobia too! Well, not so much a phobia as more of a minor neurosis, but still I have been freaked out in the past by things underwater hehe.

[–]Strug-ga-ling 5 points6 points ago

Ah, I'm glad I'm not alone. It's a full-blown phobia for me.

I remember I tried to watch a video about the world's deepest swimming pool and I just couldn't...I was terrified.

[–]cyclura 8 points9 points ago

This album of goldfish pictures should make you feel better:

[–]Freakinator 2 points3 points ago

I NEED MORE OF THAT!

[–]spgtothemax 1 point2 points ago

There's some downright cuthuliod shit in there.

[–]Xdivine -1 points0 points ago

Good sir, I'm going to have to kindly ask you to go fuck yourself. Have a pleasant day.

[–]shake-zula 0 points1 point ago

Let's not forget this one.

[–]mazbrakin 4 points5 points ago

I'm with you. Every time I see a submarine with just the tower sticking up out of the water I get the creeps. This photo makes me more nervous than spiders/snakes or other typical "creepy" things.

[–]technoholic 0 points1 point ago

yeah man scares me too.. Watch "chronicles of riddick" movie, scared as hell at the video of submarine surfacing

[–]bestsider 2 points3 points ago

Just because Cthulhu has a boat is no reason to fear him.

I also didn't see it two months ago, I am glad as well that someone reposted or I might never have seen it.

[–]Neckbeard-the-Pirate 14 points15 points ago

And this has been my desktop picture on my computer ever since... it was posted two months ago.

[–]junkytrunks 14 points15 points ago

Yep. Me too. The yacht's name was "Mar Sem Fim".

I enjoyed the thread from two months ago. People started posting about scuba diving/snorkling above wrecks like these and the unnatural fear that it instills in them to be swimming over such a thing. "Wide_Ocean" links to the thread above.

Interestingly, this boat sunk in a winter storm. You can see it going down here: http://bellinshausen.livejournal.com/26364.html#cutid1

The OP's picture is from summer. A crew has obviously gone down and removed the mast from the boat. Either that or something ripped it off after it was submerged. I wonder if they plan on raising the rest of it?

[–]elcheapo 0 points1 point ago

It cannot be from the summer. The boat sank in April of this year (fall in Antarctica). It's the middle of the winter now, summer starts in December in the Southern Hemisphere.

[–]Captainpatch -2 points-1 points ago

Why is this the top comment? It adds nothing to the discussion.

[–]MYDOGSTELLA 15 points16 points ago

Eeerrriiiiieeeee

[–]FUCKED-WITH-A-KNIFE 15 points16 points ago

No, no it's not in Lake Erie; it's under the Antarctic shore.

[–]MYDOGSTELLA 9 points10 points ago

I know. Thats why I wrote it all spooky like

[–]bigfig 0 points1 point ago

Aaaaantarrrrtiiic Shoorr

[–]rodgeramjit 2 points3 points ago

So creepy, I feel like the entire boat crew may have been beheaded while dancing on deck

[–]akajuicy 3 points4 points ago

Leave it there, it's being punished.

[–]gburgwardt 2 points3 points ago

False alarm people, we know the Borealis is in a glacier wall somewhere.

[–]jimozu 0 points1 point ago

A remarkably thin one if some of the images are correct.

[–]Toaster_of_Vengeance -1 points0 points ago

God DAMMIT. One of these days, I'm going to be the first person to post a funny comment!

[–]ihantotta 2 points3 points ago

this image terrifies me

[–]imgipperer 1 point2 points ago

Me too! I couldn't look at it for too long! Ahhh

[–]notsonerdy 0 points1 point ago

it's cool, it's just chillin

[–]mittahzerb 3 points4 points ago

I wonder if they just had to scuttle it or if people actually died from the sinking

[–]lomlomlom 1 point2 points ago

YOU'RE GOOD, YOU'RE GOOD, YOU'RE GOOD

[–]kpin 0 points1 point ago

Why don't they fucking remove it.

[–]spgtothemax 0 points1 point ago

Because its in Antartica.

[–]bw1870 0 points1 point ago

[–]bootiesz 1 point2 points ago

[–]willowisps 0 points1 point ago

[–]rofltoaster 0 points1 point ago

This gives me the chills.

[–]Vranak 1 point2 points ago

Stunning? It looks cool, I've give you that, but was I stunned? No.

[–]LPN 0 points1 point ago

This has been reposted so many times!

[–]TheRiceDude 1 point2 points ago

Kunkka's Ghost Ship.

[–]danyanimal 0 points1 point ago

I like how there's a little buoy there just to let you know to avoid the massive ship hidden under a foot of water.

[–]sinisterunicorn 1 point2 points ago

"So there is the base camp, over there is where the penguins like to hang, that way is south, ohhh yea....and that orange buoy marks where Fucking Kevin sank our only recreational boat while he was drunk."

[–]ophello -1 points0 points ago

The word "stunning" no longer has any meaning for me anymore, due to its abuse in posts like this.

[–]QuerulousPanda 0 points1 point ago

At least it's something besides a reasonably attractive woman. I was actually confused at first seeing "stunning" and not seeing breasts or cleavage. Total cognitive dissonance for a second there!

[–]pretendent -1 points0 points ago

Yeah, man. If ophello doesn't think a picture is stunning, then using that adjective to describe it is abuse.

[–]The_Auryn 0 points1 point ago

Yes, I'm stunned.

[–]Travisimus 1 point2 points ago

This gave me chills, It literally fills me with fear.

[–]raikkonen 0 points1 point ago

If i had a repost for every time this was reposted i would have alot of reposts.

[–]BCouto 0 points1 point ago

The Borealis.

[–]Arizzletron 0 points1 point ago

It's not sharks that I'm afraid of, it's crazy ideas like this.

[–]AnIrrelevantElephant 0 points1 point ago

Sunken Gelnika

[–]JDogg1329 0 points1 point ago

Yay more rubbish in Antarctica.

[–]higgerr 0 points1 point ago

I'd feel the temptation to check it out but id be scared of polar bears. I mean think about that, its like sharks but worse. unless you're this guy i guess

[–]Lutgerion 0 points1 point ago

If I would see that while at sea I would freak out. There's something really terrifying about things underwater...

[–]dawgiesman1 0 points1 point ago

Stuff like this, images of sunken cruise ships and boats, gives me the creeps. Am I the only one? The sheer enormity of some cruise ships (like that Costa Concordia a few months ago) sticking out of the water on its side really makes me uncomfortable and queezy just looking at it. Could never really get through Titanic.

[–]acesilver1 0 points1 point ago

This is stunning, but I would not like to go around it. I'd get an eerie feeling looking down into the ocean and seeing a ship, there, and wonder about its history.

[–]Devian85 0 points1 point ago

Cool. But do we know how it got sunk or whos boat it is?

[–]Daffodils28 0 points1 point ago

Spooky.

[–]s4md4130 0 points1 point ago

"Six people drowned when this boat sunk."

"Stunning!"

[–]iFartSunshine -1 points0 points ago

More garbage left behind by the Sea Shepherd 'Conservation' society??

[–]BrittaIt 1 point2 points ago

The Borealis lives!

[–]vonHindenburg 0 points1 point ago

Wrong end of the world, but did anyone else think of "The Cremation of Sam Mcgee"?

[–]uustolli 0 points1 point ago

Fuck did I park it there?

[–]pwnyoface 0 points1 point ago

hey...HEY REPOST!!!!!

but I guess if you can't beat 'em join 'em. EXPECT THIS IN THE NEXT FEW MONTHS FROM ME!!!

[–]Foley1 0 points1 point ago

Large objects under water are creepy

[–]ColoBB 0 points1 point ago

wow..that's legendary and made me want to search the boat

[–]chrisinurpants 0 points1 point ago

I don't think that boat knows which side of the water it's supposed to be on...

[–]Glazedonutface 0 points1 point ago

Still creepy as fuck.

[–]nannerpuss24 0 points1 point ago

Don't know why, but this pic freaks the ever-loving-crap out of me.

[–]analogkid1 0 points1 point ago

you could even say it glows...

[–]jdrake90 0 points1 point ago

Relevant story: My family has a summer cabin on a lake in Minnesota. The entire area was logged by timber companies for many decades. They would cut the trees down, and then during the winter, when the lake iced over (it's over 7 miles across) they would drag the logs over the ice to transport them south. Occasionally, some of the logs would slip off the barges and plunge through the ice. MOST of the logs would sink deep enough that you'd never see them, but one part of the lake in a small cove is shallow enough that the logs sink to the bottom while standing straight up, and their tops are still visible just beneath the surface. We call them the dead-heads. The water is dark enough that when you're looking for them, they never appear until you're right on top of them, and they're big - like 3-4 feet across big - and scary as all fucking shit.

[–]lijkel 1 point2 points ago

Sounds cool. Do you have any photos of it?

[–]gravey727 0 points1 point ago

This gave fucking shivers up my spine, so creepy.

[–]Mechanikal 0 points1 point ago

I feel like I should explore that boat for some stimpacks and if I am lucky, some ammo.

[–]Animal89 0 points1 point ago

Antarctica is so awesome, I seriously want to go there its like the closest thing to being in space, just desolate and awesome.

[–]bubbles_says 0 points1 point ago

Oh gawd that creeps me out so hard!

[–]GladiusRomanus 0 points1 point ago

Sorry to join the "dick train" but this was posted a while back. The original post said it was Alaska. And Eskimos don't live in Antarctica.

[–]nick041 0 points1 point ago

Wow, that's.....chilling.

[–]m19z95k 0 points1 point ago

It hasen't sunk, it's waiting.

[–]bananaskates 0 points1 point ago

Scary stuff! I have no idea why.

[–]Luxin 0 points1 point ago

I guess the Japanese won and sunk the Bob Barker...

[–]bigsaucybob 0 points1 point ago

It boggles my mind how this picture can continue to make it to the front page over and over and over again.

[–]skatefrenzy 0 points1 point ago

why the fuck are sunken ships so god damned scary

[–]alex4point0 0 points1 point ago

"Lurk more."

[–]BuffaloToast 0 points1 point ago

Naw, it's just Captain Nemo!

[–]MatteeHx 0 points1 point ago

That's amazing.

[–]fillwerrill -1 points0 points ago

nice repost.

SO close to shore... wonder if that's a big hole in the front of it that caused it. If so, amazing people were able to reach it in time with a hole that big.

[–]Capta1nPlanet 0 points1 point ago

Imagine your ship sinking in Antarctica. Your essentially fucked

[–]buckygrad 0 points1 point ago

does anyone else find this to be a really scary image?

-top comment from the last time this was posted.

[–]_Epidemic_ 0 points1 point ago

I don't know why but when I see something in the water below me it scares the shit out of me, Looking at this picture gives me the chills.

[–]HarvestMoonfan 0 points1 point ago

That reminds me of the Ark of Yamato from Okami.

[–]MountainDewMe 1 point2 points ago

Random pointless story time: I remember going to the Adirondacks with my dad when I was younger and we went out on the lake and saw one of those buoy thingys and he told me that it meant there was a sunken boat there. We swam around it and it was pretty cool. The only time I've ever seen a sunken boat.

[–]junkytrunks 0 points1 point ago

do you happen to recall the name of the lake? I love stories like this.

[–]MountainDewMe 0 points1 point ago

Sorry, no clue. This was years ago, when I was a little kid.

[–]junkytrunks 0 points1 point ago

Was worth a try. I travel up that way every other summer. I would possibly have sought this lake out if you were able to recall it.

[–]MountainDewMe 1 point2 points ago

This was around 9 years ago, would the boat still even be there? I could describe it to you, but considering how large the area is, that wouldn't get you very far.

[–]junkytrunks 0 points1 point ago

without a lake or town name, I could not find it.

yes. It is possible the boat is still there.

[–]MountainDewMe 1 point2 points ago

Hm. I'll ask my dad to see if he knows. I'll PM you if I find out.

[–]junkytrunks 1 point2 points ago

cool thanks

[–]CrackleByte 0 points1 point ago

There was an old sunken boat in Cape May, NJ that I used to swim to as a kid, called the S.S. Atlantus. I don't understand what possessed me to ever do this. I still get the chills thinking about it.

I always get excited for treasure / some epic forgotten tale when I hear about shipwrecks.

For the most part shipwrecks are filled with cum stained socks and dirty underwear...ask any submarine vet... but if you treasure those things ..then JACKPOT.
