Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

When I saw this dude I had to laugh. I wonder how many people would see him on the street and say "Such a shame, he won't get a real job with that haircut."

[–]SeskaLien 345 points346 points ago

JPL actually has a policy that they can't discriminate against you based on the way you look, which I think is pretty cool seeing as I've had colleagues that were asked to do things like cut off their dreadlocks when they got jobs at universities.

[–]MrJelly 169 points170 points ago

I used to work in a university once. One day they were hosting a conference in a lecture theatre next to my office, it wasn't really my field, but I figured I'd sneak in to one of the talks just before lunch. Anyway the chair was a guy with a big white beard wearing a skirt and tights. No one seemed to be take any notice of this though.

[–]zeug666 299 points300 points ago

With certain levels of brilliance there is an expectation of eccentricity.

[–]NotTheNews 140 points141 points ago

This is why I don't shower.

[–]Exaskryz 68 points69 points ago

Because you are smart, or want to look like it?

[–]well_golly 65 points66 points ago

Damn! That guy even smells smart!

[–]Zuxicovp 24 points25 points ago

Reeks of smartness!

[–]bamb00zled 6 points7 points ago

That guy smells like soap and deodorant!!

What an idiot

[–]Freakazo 137 points138 points ago

Yes.

[–]uprightleftdown 2 points3 points ago

You don't want it to rub off...

[–]ComradeDoctor 48 points49 points ago

Thought your name said NotTheJews and your message took on a whole new meaning.

[–]JEWPACOLYPSE 25 points26 points ago

Likewise

[–]OriginalStomper 9 points10 points ago

Mmm. I love the smell of intelligence in the morning.

[–]bookontapeworm 8 points9 points ago

Dilbert well dressed engineer comic I think about this a lot at my work, as we have no dress code.

[–]dermoplast 27 points28 points ago

I work with a lot of engineers and some of them just dress crazy. It's my dream to be good enough at what I do that I can dress like a freak and everyone just has to deal with it. It's kind of one of my life goals. I wear weird shirts of Fridays, like this one with all these kittens playing with string that says "too tied up to play" and another that has an arrow pointing down that says "baby under construction". That shirt is way too big on me, so the arrow ends at my crotch... so it's techically correct. Oh yeah, I'm a 34 yr old SysAd.

[–]tc9993 13 points14 points ago

My best friend is an engineer who designs airplanes for insanely rich people. He's got tattoos and spider bite piercings in his lips. EDIT: and he works in Texas (that was the biggest surprise of all)

[–]Gentlemann 12 points13 points ago

As a Texan I find this offensive. We're just as capable of body modification as you yanks. Just the other day I went down to the local tattoo parlor and got my favorite cow Bessie tattood across my chest and I've got a ten gallon hat for every holiday, so there's no need for your stereotyping.

[–]CaptInsane 3 points4 points ago

Are you sure it wasn't a kilt?

[–]TenPie 2 points3 points ago

Did you go to CalTech?

EDIT: The reason why I ask is I had an engineering professor at my college who went to CalTech. We had an entire lesson about strain gauges and its inventor. The inventor, a professor at CalTech at the time, apparently got no credit for the discovery and creation of the strain gauge. As a form of protest, I believe he quit his position at the university and would just hang around on-campus in a pink tutu.

[–]anotherkeebler 25 points26 points ago

Something I learned watching M*A*S*H and dubbed "The Hawkeye Rule":

If you're good enough at your job, you can show up at work in your bathrobe and nobody will say a thing about it.

[–]XoYo 19 points20 points ago

I wish that was true. Back when I was at secondary school, my English teacher was fantastic at inspiring kids to work and get results. He was fired for refusing to adhere to the dress code; he had hair down to his backside and always wore denim shorts.

The teacher they replaced him with wore a suit, but had the personality of wallpaper paste. Most of the kids in my class lost interest at that point.

[–]MrFatalistic 2 points3 points ago

it probably vastly depends on the job, I could see jobs like teaching it's very much status quo and nobody recognizes all the kids they do inspire.

Coming from IT however, this is pretty much the case, there's so many inept people that if you actually know what you're doing and handle shit well, you can show up sweats and a tank top... but I keep the bar a little higher than that for the common interest...

[–]TheRealBramtyr 1 point2 points ago

They replaced him with Romney?

[–]mycatiskai 22 points23 points ago

You just can't be allergic to peanuts at the JPL or you will have an anaphylactic reaction during landings.

[–]Wrym 41 points42 points ago

[–]pan0ramic 12 points13 points ago

This policy is fairly common in science as people don't have to look nice for clients or business partners. It's all about the science! I work for an observatory and people walk around in sandals and socks all the time.

[–]yourpenisinmyhand 13 points14 points ago

I can't have ANY facial hair at my job. It's not even a special job, I work in an office, for Christ sake. It's bullshit.

[–]tidderwork 12 points13 points ago

unless you're some kind of office model with contractual limitations on your appearance, I don't think they can tell you that. There are plenty of religious reasons for some people to not shave and they can't discriminate against you for that.

Stirring up little shit like this is what I live for. As long as you're productive, cooperative, and clean you should be able to get away with the "I had a religious awakening and cannot shave anymore" line.

[–]floggeriffic 19 points20 points ago

Unless you work in a state that has, "at will" laws. In Texas, you can be fired for any reason. Many jobs have dress codes, facial hair codes, and so on.

[–]ceracin 3 points4 points ago

IMO it's more about forcing people to change something about their bodies that occurs naturally... it's stupid. (Putting general hygiene aside like bathing and brushing teeth). To me it likens to firing someone because they're too short/tall/fat/skinny/weirdly shaped/acne-covered/missing a limb/etc...

I was denied a job at a fucking pizza place because the bitch of an interviewer thought I looked physically weak and she said this right to my fucking face.

Its a fucking pizza parlor. What the fuck. You don't have to be the fucking hulk to spread sauce on a slab of god damn dough.

[–]talkstomuch 4 points5 points ago

I'm pretty sure every company can be sued for discriminating against you based on the way you look, gender, age and few other things. But still companies are more likely to employ someone looking more conservative, all else being more or less equal. It's only when you're exceptional, then they can completely ignore your appearance.

[–]neoandblondetrinity 12 points13 points ago

Try it in Michigan. You cannot get a job here without dressing like you work at Don Draper's agency on Mad Men. This place is seriously backward. Women here cannot be seen with open toed shoes and will be not be hired if they have anything but two ear piercings. The Pope rules Michigan, seriously. Long haired freaky people need not apply...

[–]bagehi 5 points6 points ago

Half the cities are in or approaching bankruptcy. Unemployment was over 14% three years ago (and U6 has remained high, suggesting people didn't find work, they just fell out of the U3 parameters). Meanwhile, engineering jobs have been moving out of the state for the last three decades. Yep, Michigan is a shining example of a good employment environment.

[–]sparton192 10 points11 points ago

I feel like it shouldn't matter as long as you don't break the law they are obviously some of the brightest in the world.

[–]hassani1387 101 points102 points ago

Especially since he's an American of Iranian ethnic background

[–]shstmo 94 points95 points ago

"Iranian infiltrates US government, rises to commander of inter-planetary cruise missile mission. Passivist Obama sees no threat to America's sovereignty. This and more coming up on Fox News."

[–]sweetNawris 11 points12 points ago

I wanted to correct you and be like, hey, wait, it's pacifist, but then I looked it up and learned that passivist is a valid and subtly different thing. TIL.

[–]Shooter__McGavin 8 points9 points ago

Thanks for putting this in bold, Broseph

[–]maxxusflamus 16 points17 points ago

well...he probably didn't get the job with that haircut. He does a different hair style every mission so he probably interviewed at NASA with a more standard look.

[–]WaterbottleDrownedMe 7 points8 points ago

Exactly! This was a special occasion hairdo, not his everyday look!

[–]Mechanikore 16 points17 points ago

Goes to barber

"Give me the mission hair."

[–]ailee43 2 points3 points ago

cue epic montage and music

[–]Xenopus_laevis 31 points32 points ago

When I saw him I instantly thought of that recent AMA from the 97 year old NASA worker. He said Apollo 13 was saved using the idea of some MIT student, and they refused to give him credit when they found out he looked like a hippy.

Now, right there in mission control was a guy in a multicolored mohawk and no more than 2 feet next to him, an aging hippie looking guy. NASA sure has changed since the 70's.

[–]wpiman 69 points70 points ago

It is about time people like this start acting like fucking rock stars, getting paid like rock stars, and getting laid like rock starts....

[–]mandrsn1 45 points46 points ago

getting paid like rock stars

as soon as talented engineers are as rare as rock stars you may be on to something.

edit: I should say, there are a ton of engineers that make way more money than than rock stars; however, there are shit a shitload more really good engineers. What percentage of the Forbes 400 is rock stars? Right about 0%. A high percentage are engineers.

[–]jhaluska 7 points8 points ago

Talented engineers are as rare. Companies just have a hard time realizing who actually makes them successful. The association of a product with a company instead of it's individual engineers is probably what contributes to the problem.

[–]ReturningTarzan 22 points23 points ago

I don't think many people would actually say that, given how handsome he is and how much he's rocking the haircut. In fact I would say there are very few places that would turn him down based on his looks, and then it would mostly be because of the stars which he could trim off in about a week anyway.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points ago

how many people

probably the same people that get all cunty about NASA "wasting tax dollars" so it wouldn't matter

[–]ell0bo 9 points10 points ago

I often wonder how many people say that about me? I have a lot of friends getting on me that I'm 30 and need to clean up my act. I just remind them that I'm more successful than all of them and they need to relax a little bit. It really is a shame that we are that way.

[–]brontosaurus-rex 2 points3 points ago

The only person I know who works for NASA also has a mohawk. She's about 5'2, pink mohawk, and is a dive instructor turned NASA instructor - teaches astronauts how to be weightless by diving with them at NASA's headquarters in Houston.

[–]TerryArchi 1 point2 points ago

on the street

If this was posted with no context, the top comment would have been: congrats on you job-stopper.

[–]mrbarry1024 529 points530 points ago

Smart is the new sexy.

Coincidentally, sexy is also the new sexy.

[–]geekinabox 30 points31 points ago

In this spirit, though he's not sporting the 'hawk, don't miss the NPR story on EDL team leader Adam Steltzner @ http://www.npr.org/2012/08/03/157597270/crazy-smart-when-a-rocker-designs-a-mars-lander ...

Wherein you shall learn How banging girls in the back of a hearse leads to a career @ NASA playing Rover On A Rope.

[–]PlusMinusZero 4 points5 points ago

As a (previous) college drop out finishing my BS in MechEng, Adam Steltzner's story was huge encouragement to me.

[–]tumorninja 28 points29 points ago

even more coincidentally, his name is kabob spelled backwards, making him additionally tasty.

[–]drbooberry 14 points15 points ago

also coincidentally, he is iranian. and kabobs were made in iran.

[–]Korberos 4 points5 points ago

He's the most beautiful man I've ever seen with a name that's backwards kabob.

[–]kealiee 61 points62 points ago

Irene Adler? ಠ_ಠ

[–]fuzzby 33 points34 points ago

[–]zmeace 3 points4 points ago

Who is this?

[–]WanderlustUK 7 points8 points ago

Lara Pulver

[–]Studdy 17 points18 points ago

Iranian is the new sexy..?

[–]I-hate-reposts 10 points11 points ago

not the new sexy, always been.

[–]hassani1387 5 points6 points ago

EXACTLY!

[–]pwarz00 9 points10 points ago

once i saw him i had a feeling he would be a hit on here

[–]ToShipshape 131 points132 points ago

B.S. Aeronautics And Astronautics from U Washington (2001), M.S. In same from MIT (2003) for those curious.

[–]ToShipshape 144 points145 points ago

Bobak Ferdowsi was born on November 7, 1979, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. With his loving parents, he quickly moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where he would stay until the age of 11. In 1991, he moved to Tokyo, Japan, attending the American School In Japan until graduating in 1997, with the exception of a one-year term in Oakland, California at the College Preparatory School. Bobak returned to the United States in the fall of 1997 to enroll in the University of Washington in Seattle.

During his college experience, Bobak toyed with a number of majors before settling on aerospace engineering, a childhood dream of his. At the same time, he worked in the Department of Physics, performing research under Nobel Laureate Dr. Hans Dehmelt and Dr. Warren Nagourney. His professors in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, especially Professor Kuen Lin, would influence his next decision.

Bobak enrolled in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the fall of 2001, and joined the Lean Aerospace Initiative. It was here that he learned about a great deal more than the traditional aspects of engineering. The result is a thesis on the Air Force’s acquisition strategies, and more importantly, a young man with a vastly greater knowledge of the world of aerospace engineering and an interest in shaping the future of this industry.

Though no one knows for certain what the future holds for Bobak, his aspirations are to pursue a challenging career in aerospace engineering, and eventually, following in the footsteps of his father and of the many who have helped him over the years—become a teacher.

[–]Brazilian_Bookworm 9 points10 points ago

thanks for that!

[–]Ballsacinyoface 47 points48 points ago

he's also iranian

[–]Honestly_ 25 points26 points ago

You don't say? ;)

[and for those reading it's "Bah-Back"]

[–]ArchieBandit 16 points17 points ago

Areh digeh!

[–]applepieyum 8 points9 points ago

Do do do do do do Iran!

[–]ArchieBandit 6 points7 points ago

Maz. I am Persian, meow.

[–]Honestly_ 5 points6 points ago

bahleh, agha!

[–]persianprez 4 points5 points ago

pas chi!?

[–]munge_me_not 12 points13 points ago

His real name is Boba Fettowsi

[–]gun_toting_catharsis 3 points4 points ago

Nice try, but Boba Fett was modeled after a Maori warrior, not an Iranman

[–]lolmonger 7 points8 points ago

Bobak Ferdowsi was born on November 7, 1979, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

He's an American.

His ancestry is Iranian.

[–]exflashkick 2 points3 points ago

He's American, he was born and mostly raised in America.

[–]notsowittyname 18 points19 points ago

Most importantly, is he gay or straight? He's gorgeous.

[–]evereal 13 points14 points ago

I hear he'd quite happily land his shuttle in Uranus, any day.

[–]notsowittyname 5 points6 points ago

That was a frontier I never wanted to explore, but for him...All systems are go.

[–]planejane 4 points5 points ago

This question needs answering, people!

[–]Aldinach 52 points53 points ago

While watching one of the press conferences for the mission they talked about the weird lucky charms people were doing for the touchdown. Apparently he does a crazy haircut for every major mission. He took a vote from his coworkers this time around and came up with the Stars and Stripes theme.

[–]chiphead2332 11 points12 points ago

To the top with you and your real explanation. I saw that press conference as well and am now trying to find the relevant ustream video.

Edit: found the video. Relevant part starts at about 13:25.

[–]Kemintiri 106 points107 points ago

Goddamn, he is sexy.

[–]MestR 41 points42 points ago

I'm a straight guy and I can confirm that he is, indeed, sexy.

[–]Banana_w_dope_inside 1 point2 points ago

No, you're not straight.

[–]cjhazza 203 points204 points ago

He looks a bit like Cesc Fabregas

[–]idontremembermypw 106 points107 points ago

lady boner on full.

[–]SrsSteel 47 points48 points ago

I look like him, except different.

[–]RarneyBubble 2 points3 points ago

I look like him too, except nothing like him.

[–]jennack 11 points12 points ago

insert dirty joke about directing and flights

[–]CasillasQT 9 points10 points ago

Was also my first thought.

[–]ChasingShad0ws 9 points10 points ago

That was my first thought. "What is Cesc doing on Reddit and that haircut?" But, I then read the title.

[–]msterB 6 points7 points ago

I like how you chose a pic with him still at Arsenal. I like you.

[–]Shadybacon12 86 points87 points ago

That's one scientific Mohawk.

[–]samageddon 45 points46 points ago

Astronomical objects occupy his mind so much that they've made an appearance on his scalp.

[–]NameTaken25 66 points67 points ago

"And we're back, with Greendale's resident space expert, Starburns" "My name is Bobak" "Starburns joins us with his pet Mars rover..."

[–]sausagekingofchicago 81 points82 points ago

Bangarang!!!!

[–]Possum_Pendulum 29 points30 points ago

RUUUUFIOOOOOO!!!

[–]MadAsRabbitz 5 points6 points ago

BANGARAAAANG

[–]Daveyo520 31 points32 points ago

[–]ismakkabich 10 points11 points ago

His followers increased sufficiently overnight

[–]Daveyo520 4 points5 points ago

They did indeed.

[–]vinhboy 19 points20 points ago

Someone should follow him and ask him to IAMA.

Not it.

[–]Daveyo520 17 points18 points ago

Fine I will ask. Edit: And asked.

[–]Trikuzig 148 points149 points ago

The Persian Matt Damon

[–]cobrakai11 20 points21 points ago

Incidentally, his involvement has gotten a fair amount of press coverage in Iran.

[–]CuntSlugs 17 points18 points ago

He is a handsome fella.

[–]organised 13 points14 points ago

dunno why you were downvoted for this, you're not the only one who spotted his Persian sounding name.

[–]erfanP 39 points40 points ago

He actually is Persian.

[–]Limitedcomments 12 points13 points ago

Welp, case closed then.

[–]hansn 8 points9 points ago

Just one last thing. Let's see who Bobak really is.

[removes mask]

Why it's old man Smithers, the guy who runs the Space Mountain ride!

[–]FrankManic 15 points16 points ago

OH NOES! IRANIAN TERROR SCIENTISTS IN NASA! /ifuckinghateforeignpolicy

[–]seeashbashrun 12 points13 points ago

...he is gorgeous

[–]Basic_Subhadra 13 points14 points ago

Does anyone know if this awesome guy is Persian / Iranian-american?

[–]good_at_it 5 points6 points ago

Confirmed

[–]Basic_Subhadra 2 points3 points ago

Gah, Persians are always so hot.

[–]Togoku 12 points13 points ago

This guy was all fine and dandy but what about the dude who was having a baby soon? He was the fucking Tony Stark of Nasa.

[–]amyfarrahfowlerphd 2 points3 points ago

Eh, he was more like the Morrissey of NASA.

[–]Togoku 2 points3 points ago

well yeah in looks =P but some of his comments were very....not cocky but very confidently unknowing? I was laughing at some of his comments

[–]Mr_Zuvai 33 points34 points ago

don't let the disguise fool you .... it's sylar!!

[–]bigfig 15 points16 points ago

At NASA? That would be Spock.

[–]encee_rz 11 points12 points ago

[–]DragomirWootton 36 points37 points ago

Soap Mactavish

[–]engineerBro 20 points21 points ago

Iranian origins! I feel proud we had a little part in this :)

[–]shutupjoey 8 points9 points ago

That's a sweet name, I hope he doesn't just go by Bob.

[–]hallowayillustration 41 points42 points ago

Finally, a hot guy at the top of /r/pics for the sake of being good looking.

[–]Fionwe 23 points24 points ago

Rocket science has never been sexier.

[–]Capt_Ido_Nos 13 points14 points ago

Rufio!

[–]MizerokRominus 7 points8 points ago

Watching the control room made me realize how much I love NASA and their acceptance policies. If you belong there, you belong there regardless of the way you look.

[–]dongello 6 points7 points ago

Why is Fabregas with NASA?

[–]skyclown 7 points8 points ago

I thought he was Cesc Fabregas at first, fuck sake there was even another guy who looked like Michael Madsen!

[–]MrRushing 7 points8 points ago

It's not a Mohawk, it's a Warrior Stripe. And as a fellow Striper, I am proud.

[–]hbdgas 6 points7 points ago

[–]Dankherbal 5 points6 points ago

My type of guy!

[–]xBAU5 12 points13 points ago

Oh sweet ! this guy's Persian

[–]Iainfixie 104 points105 points ago

I was watching the uStream last night and was disgusted at the comments

"What's the faggot doin in the control room?"

"Space brony has aids"

"faghawk guy is posting M4M ads on craigslist"

I lost a ton of faith in humanity until I clicked the full-screen button and the rover touched down safely.

[–]MizerokRominus 118 points119 points ago

You realize that the worst of us is an incredibly tiny group of people that will always be that way, and should instead focus on the great things that we're doing instead of getting wound up in some anonymous clusterfuck.

[–]Iainfixie 30 points31 points ago

I was watching the chat dissolve into a "This isn't real GOD wouldn't allow it" and other obvious trolling no holds barred cage match. However the chat began to get nutty and filled with religious protesters, and people calling for the deaths of NASA scientists due to them being "liberals" without any hint of trolling.

It was just disheartening to watch something so scientifically amazing, be marred by a bunch of intolerant, racist, homophobic, and xenophobic whackjobs claiming that Obama is staging this.

Once I hit full-screen all those troubles faded away!

[–]Questions-Answered 36 points37 points ago

However the chat began to get nutty and filled with religious protesters, and people calling for the deaths of NASA scientists due to them being "liberals" without any hint of trolling.

That just means the trolls won. They took it a step higher than you were willing to believe.

[–]MizerokRominus 4 points5 points ago

Indeed, just remember that the minorities are the loudest when it comes to the internet and realize that there are still 200k+ watching a milestone in exploration take place.

[–]oldaccount 4 points5 points ago

The Vocal Minority.

[–]zwerver 37 points38 points ago

It's amazing how the people landing something on mars, are actually the same species as the guy eating a pizza and yelling 'faggot' at his screen.

[–]AdrianBrony 0 points1 point ago

*mars

[–]ChokingVictim 10 points11 points ago

If some douches on the internet cause you to lose faith in humanity, you might want to reassess where your faith is coming from.

[–]Compatibilist 6 points7 points ago

AMA request...

[–]Mdbailey87 0 points1 point ago

Seconded.

[–]sketcher7 9 points10 points ago

Iranians, fuck yeah!

[–]maria_maria 5 points6 points ago

Hubba, hubba

[–]Lambytoes 16 points17 points ago

Oh, swoon.

[–]AetherofAtlas 4 points5 points ago

Cesc Fabregas?

[–]R88SHUN 4 points5 points ago

Bobak Ferdowsi is the martian translation of Boba Fett.

[–]dongleberries 3 points4 points ago

take him to r/ladyspaceboner

[–]choctawman 4 points5 points ago

Reminds me of my days at SpaceX. A bunch of guys there look like this.

[–]md453 3 points4 points ago

When I saw this guy, I thought, "how long before I see him on Reddit?". I do agree though, he is pretty rad.

[–]WilliamGoat 1 point2 points ago

funny thing is that reddit would usually call someone with a haircut like that a douchebag.

[–]shoopdawhoop999[!] 4 points5 points ago

HOLY FUCK JOHN "SOAP" MACTAVISH IS IN NASA

Showed this to my parents... "When you land your own space craft on Mars I don't give a fuck what you do with your hair." I figured they'd laugh.

[–]peruytu 1 point2 points ago

I want THIS DUDE to be the first man on Mars. Him and that hippie dude, so he can take pictures with his iPhone.
