And then there's my dream that space exploration and the internet have no borders or countries...

[–]springers11 2 points3 points ago

why not as "a human"?

[–]Spaceplant 0 points1 point ago

And yes, all Americans look like this.

[–]temjrpgh 1 point2 points ago

...at least at some point.

And all this national garbage again? How could you so underestimate science? I'm from the Eastern Europe and I can post just the same gif with the different phrase: "As a human being watching Curiosity land on Mars".

Or do you think, LHC is european and so Higgs Boson is still not discovered for you, americans?

PS This gif is ooooooold.

May I just say thank you for inventing the 10 digit number system, that was based to make this landing on Mars possible.

Some random guy from Denmark...

It's important to be proud of our accomplishments, and lets be honest; you nor I did little to help this project. Sure we can still be proud, but Americans certainly own the achievement.

And I second that.

Also, just out of curiosity; where are you from exactly?

Sure we can still be proud, but Americans certainly own the achievement.

Actually, very few of them. Churches didn't helped in any way and the same is related to almost everyone except NASA. NASA did a great job. But in the first place, this is a win of Science, I believe. First man on the moon was a great national (american) success. I am really happy with americans still funding science and space - this is the right thing to do. But in current days I want to believe in the world uniting in the name of science. Even first rovers (which were a bigger success in a historycal sense) have done a lot to the Science, not to the specific nation.

I'm not taking an achievement from the nation, again. I just can't stand attitude like this: "Oh, the people from the same territory as I, achieved something. I feel like I've done this."

I'm from Belarus - a little post-soviet country near to Russia. And I can see a lot so ungrounded pride when they discover any (!) belarussian root of famous people like Jovovich, Ballmer, Johansen and so on, and so on... And I think this is hypocrisy.

All that I attribute to them is the taxes they pay. Although I do agree with you that the science that led to this achievement was grounded in the work of others; only American citizens payed NASA's budget in this endeavor.

I've long dreamed of world-funded scientific programs, but it's not something that I can figure out how to approach.

The problem on Reddit is that America's accomplishments are rarely recognized as ours, while our mistakes are brought under great scrutiny, and are made to seem as ours, and only ours.

Some 3rd world country wins their first olympic medal and gushes patriotism and everyone gets all teary eyed for them, USA lands a craft on Mars and the America-haters get their panties in a twist over a little American patriotism.

Gotta love reddit
