Best boss ever. We need more people like Gabe.

[–]wavefunction84 240 points241 points ago

I actually got fired from a job for the same reason. I had to be hospitalized for three weeks due to ulcerative colitis (though not nearly as bad as Erik) and upon informing my employer they fired me on the spot. Wish there were bosses like Gaben for sure...

[–]LurkyMcLurkinson 282 points283 points ago

That's actually illegal here in The Netherlands.

[–]RobbieGee 230 points231 points ago

Same in Scandinavia.

[–]Legabis 136 points137 points ago

Would be headline-news and an enraged populous if that where to happen here.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Dewtrocity 41 points42 points ago

What? At my job and many others we are allowed to go on disability. I live in the US btw.

[–]Geminel 48 points49 points ago

The reality is they'll never fire you for the disability. An asshole boss can conjure up whatever fucking other reason they please though and generally get away with it.

[–]Cryophilous 20 points21 points ago

My employer tried this with someone that I used to work with. Then that person got in touch with a good lawyer. A little over three years later, and the person that fired him has been let go, and my ex-coworker is living the good life with the money my employer just shelled out to them.

[–]Graemelion 21 points22 points ago

And now, whenever any company does a background check, they'll see a nice settlement. Or a lawsuit "win" by the employee, and it'll go down as a risk to the new company.

[–]GreyLlama 21 points22 points ago

Doesn't matter if you're in the US, just depends on whether your boss is an asshole.

[–]Essar 75 points76 points ago

whether you're boss

I'd fire you for that.

[–]velkyr 14 points15 points ago

I guess that makes you an asshole.

[–]leonsecure 4 points5 points ago

Not in Germany. Here the boss only pays you for the first 42 days of your illness. After that health care is paying your salary (but only 70% of your normal salary). So the boss doesn't have to fire you (and is also not allowed to, if he does fire you, you might get a lot of money from him...).

[–]Chortslut 3 points4 points ago

It's kind of the same in Denmark, but a diasease like ulcerative colitis, you have outbreaks (hope it's called that in english) where the diasease is worse than normally, many people will be able to do their job most of the time when the diasease is in the calm stages.

[–]Whoopah 8 points9 points ago

It does matter, since it is, as mentioned, illegal in many other countries.

[–]Slotos 1 point2 points ago

Even in post-soviet country it's easier to pay you for three weeks than fire you and face the need to forge the document trail for that.

[–]motrjay 4 points5 points ago

Same here, I would suspect the employer may actually be arrested for it.

[–]daguito81 2 points3 points ago

No, he just doesn't fire you for being sick. He fires you for "underperforming" or that one time you were late, or some other bullshit reason a an excuse.then you basically have to go to court to sue and MAYBE get some money out of it

[–]neogetz 3 points4 points ago

Same in england, anti-discrimination laws. Hell I had to take a month off work 3 weeks after starting my first ever job because i crippled my knee, they paid me sick pay and had my job waiting when i hobbled in a month later on crutches.

[–]wavefunction84 39 points40 points ago

I was working in Japan at the time as an English teacher for a dispatch company. It was several years ago and it was an entry level job but I had been working there for quite awhile and was well liked all the same. It was the kind of job where you were contracted out to various schools and if "the foreigner" didn't show up to teach English, the school would call up the dispatch company and demand they "send another one". Not exactly high on the totem pole.

Anyway, the funny thing is that I would only miss a week of work or so, as I held off telling them how sick I was until a week before the summer break. When I went to the hospital, they freaked out and wanted to admit me right away so I begged them to let me work one more week before being admitted (they dropped the words "toxic megacolon" which meant I wasn't even allowed to leave the bed).

I called my employer, thinking I'd get docked a week's pay at the very worst and after trying to pressure my doctor into releasing me via the telephone, he handed the phone to me and they verbally fired me. They also forged my signature to make it look like I quit so they could forgo paying me unemployment once I got out of the hospital, bankrupting me and forcing me to go back to my home country.

It isn't illegal in Japan, sadly. I've read up on it. It is seen as kind of a crappy thing to do and not something a Japanese company would do to an actual citizen unless it was extreme circumstances.

The company I worked for is called RCS Corporation, in case anyone googles this.

[–]the_last_fartbender 14 points15 points ago

Forging your signature isnt illegal in Japan?

[–]wavefunction84 9 points10 points ago

Of course it is, I just wasn't in a position to stick around for months putting up the good fight. After the hospital, being out of work and not even getting paid for the last month I worked, I was broke and just wanted to go home. I had also no energy whatsoever.

[–]the_last_fartbender 4 points5 points ago

I would probably have done that too.

[–]trilobitemk7 6 points7 points ago

Note to self, develop special ink and pen for unique signatures.

[–]Roopa132 54 points55 points ago

Same in any European country.

[–]BulletBilll 14 points15 points ago

And Canada

[–]Herman-the-German 19 points20 points ago

So, Canada - what about moving over to Europe? UK doesn't really like us. You can have their spot, becoming an island! =)

[–]5e10on 11 points12 points ago

Bu- but I like you...

[–]Reapercore 2 points3 points ago

We haven't repeatedly beaten you Germans to have you give our country away to Canada. Lets give them Greece.

[–]Shabbering 7 points8 points ago

Don't judge all of us by the Government that was elected in on 36% of the vote.

A lot of us actually love you Eurobros.

[–]Asyx 2 points3 points ago

Well Canada is big. We could probably replace the French as well.

[–]bolt_off 5 points6 points ago

Same in my African country. I'm surprised this isn't universal right.

[–]syverN 23 points24 points ago

i'm pretty sure thats illegal in the US also.

[–]BimmerAddict 18 points19 points ago

Don't disturb the circlejerk, bro.

[–]smacktaix 8 points9 points ago

An immediate termination certainly is, yeah. If an employee claims protection under the FMLA, they can't be fired for at least 12 weeks. You must keep them and let them back to their old job if they are fit to return within that timeframe. You don't have to pay them while they're not at work, though.

IANAL.

[–]lydocia 28 points29 points ago

To be fair, from an entrepreneurs point of view, they do need that spot filled, and you don't train someone for a spot for only three weeks.

Then again, this guy was a real asset to the company and had become a friend to the boss. This shows guts, as Gabe, as a boss, took the space to make his decision outside of the traditional "company first" morals.

[–]Locke02 33 points34 points ago

I think it can be argued that the decision was beneficial to the company.

[–]lydocia 45 points46 points ago

But he didn't know that, did he?

Or else...

GABE IS A TIME TRAVELLER.

[–]dooblagras 14 points15 points ago

I think that he knew that being a good guy would most likely do him good in the end. But I don't want to doubt time travel ether...

[–]JonVanDyke 24 points25 points ago

The point is he didn't need to know it. If you hire competent, motivated, clever people, treat them really well, and give them some room to create, good things will happen.

[–]EvilMonkeySlayer 6 points7 points ago

No, if he were a time traveller he could have gone into the future. Gotten a copy of Half-Life 3 and then released it now... unless he is a time traveller and Half-Life 3 never got finished...
Oh flying spaghetti, what have I done?

[–]weyand1 4 points5 points ago

Rule number one: you can't interfere with your own timeline. If he went to go get the game to release it in the past, then it will already have been made, so it wouldn't need to be created in the future. But if this is true, he wouldn't have been able to retrieve it, thus you are presented with a paradox, one of the oldest problems with time travel. I believe there's a teen titans episode in which a villain steals something from the past simply because history says he does, but I will need verification.

[–]vortxone 5 points6 points ago

It would cause a predestination paradox. If he went to the future to get Half Life 3, and returned to what he considered his "home time", he would at some point have to use the copy of Half Life 3 to create it in the first place, causing a quantum loop and possibly dooming the universe. Of course, that's only from a linear perspective. Don't get me started on wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff.

[–]iamtheowlman 2 points3 points ago

And he's been to the future, where Half Life 3 is Godawful, and he's holding it back as long as he can to postpone the riots in the streets.

Good Guy Gabe indeed.

[–]LockeAndKeyes 8 points9 points ago

Your comment is 3 lines long....

DO I HAVE TO SAY IT?

[–]lydocia 11 points12 points ago

Yes, because I don't know what you mean.

[–]WGMindless 8 points9 points ago

Look! The first comment was 3 lines long, the next was 2 lines long, then the last one only had one line.

It's a countdown!

[–]Clockworkings 8 points9 points ago

Someone quick! Make a blank comment!

[–]ressurrectin 20 points21 points ago

[–]Caustik420 3 points4 points ago

Referring to the fact that Gabe tends to not make a 3rd in his series of games (Portal 2...TF2...HL2..). At least that is what I assume.

[–]LockeAndKeyes 5 points6 points ago

HALF LIFE 3 IS CONFIRMED!

[–]st_gulik 18 points19 points ago

I work in a family business. One of our employees who's been with us for almost five years just went in for heart surgery. He's going to have to have a bunch of bypasses and be out for months minimum. My Dad just told him almost the same thing Gabe told Erik. I'm so proud to work with my family and have my dad as my boss.

[–]deelowe 2 points3 points ago

If you are in the US, you need to read up on the FMLA. What they did was very illegal.

[–]TemplerJustice 4 points5 points ago

Can you claim unemployment for that?

[–]wavefunction84 3 points4 points ago

I would have and wanted to but the company forged my signature to make it look like I resigned so they wouldn't have to pay out. It's a common tactic there as I've heard countless stories like that.

[–]Fake-Empire[!] 6 points7 points ago

Jesus Christ! Have you ever talked to a lawyer about that? That's really fucked up and really really really illegal.

[–]vortxone 5 points6 points ago

And most likely unprovable.

[–]Trapped_SCV 40 points41 points ago

We need more people like Gabe.

Gabe was already extremely rich from his time at Microsoft before he founded Valve. I agree his business model has assured long term sustainable growth, but that doesn't mean every company had the luxury to do what Valve and Gabe have done.

I'm a laymen's knowledge of business, but it is an advantage not being a public company that doesn't have to take short cuts and can sustain losses for multiple quarters without losing their job. More so when you have the financial backing to hire the best people.

I love Gabe it's just that I don't think there aren't many businesses that could be run the way Valve has been.

[–]LittleToast 16 points17 points ago

True but the reason Valve is run the way it is is because of him. A lot of businesses wouldn't operate like this even if they had the money to do so.

[–]smacktaix 7 points8 points ago

Word. As much as I'd like to be able to tell an employee this if they got sick, I wouldn't be able to afford it. My employees bring in their salaries directly for the time being, and if they're not working for an extended period of time, there's no one available to work for them and pick up the slack. They'd have to be canned if they were struck with a long-term illness.

[–]jroks 9 points10 points ago

I work part time at the Meat House in Raleigh. A co-worker (full time employee) got incredibly sick and was put into induced coma. The owner continued to pay him is full salary while in the hospital, paid his medical bills and kept his bills paid. The guy was in a coma for 2 to 3 months I believe before Christmas last year. He was back to work after he recovered fully. Employee for life.

[–]Freelancer68 5 points6 points ago

Gabe recognized talent when he saw it. A good boss knows not to kill the golden goose.

...and he's a nice guy.

[–]ouyawei 9 points10 points ago

I think some basic labour rights like other countries have would be even better. .

[–]Antarioo 2 points3 points ago

notch is a close contender...didnt he split his yearly divident to his employees last year?

helping several out of debt and/or paid off some mortgages

somebody with better google fu post those twitter screencaps

[–]Crouise 4 points5 points ago

He did.

[–]Cosmic_Citizen 188 points189 points ago

Our country's healthcare system and worker's rights shouldn't be so poor that a citizen's entire livelihood could be jeopardized by an illness. We shouldn't live in a country where we consider the kindness Gabe provided this person to be remarkable. Treating people humanly should be the norm.

[–]Enlightnd 28 points29 points ago

Here's a lil story from Belgium.

My best friend started a new job in March, First week in, she found out she was about 1 month pregnant.

5 weeks in, some complications came up causing her to have extremely high blood pressure.

Ever since, she has been at home (she has had some further complications and might have to undergo an emergency C section if she starts bleeding or the pregnancy is at 34-36 weeks.

She made somewhere around 4K Brut, comes down to around 2200-2300 net.

From our national healthcare system, she gets disability which accounts for 80% of her original wages (first year, 2nd and 3de goes down to 70% and 60%) (Came down to 1750 Net)

She, as many here, have an extra insurance policy at work, which covers the rest of the lost wages during disability/illnes.

So, she's worked at a new company for all of 5 weeks, has been receiving her full wages ever since and noone is bothering her about it or threatening to fire her, nor is it expected of her to put in her resignation, she's actually received phone calls from work to ask how she is doing and if she needs any further help.

We pay maybe 50€ a year directly to our mutuality, and the working money for our healthcare system comes from part of the taxes on our wages that goes into the healthcare fund.

EDIT: lil additional note.

This is only the coverage for when she gets ill (which now happened during her pregnancy).

She actually also has fully covered maternity leave, once she gives birth.

[–]saintgadreel 7 points8 points ago

I kinda wish my wife and I could be in Belgium right now...

[–]fedv 4 points5 points ago

Hang in there, bud. Life's a roller coaster and we can't control every thing in our lives. In the end, money is man made, but a loving significant other and a family are the most important and take priority over every thing. Things will pick up, and for some comfort, think of all the times when life was too tough to predict what happens next; it gets better! Things are always changing, you just have to realize that you always need a positive attitude, especially if you're going to be a dad!

[–]saintgadreel 2 points3 points ago

I appreciate what you are saying, however, I feel like a beat up soldier, and I've never served a day in the military. It's been a long 12 years, and though it 'gets better', it only does so in a break even kinda way. If you lived the life I have, you wouldn't have much of a sunny attitude. We strive for greatness, fail, with the economy right behind us, and then we try to rebuild. If the economy fails every 10 years, like it has since I was a kid, then you never do much than just barely make it back to where you were when it all fell apart. This is no way for us to live. None of us, you, me, my wife, or anybody.

[–]Shaboz 5 points6 points ago

Fuckin' christ this is why I want to get out of the US

[–]sometypeofperson 10 points11 points ago

From what I've gathered the US is so much more fun but most of your population can't afford it.

[–]neuralspark 5 points6 points ago

That's really the problem with our country. Most of the populace will vote against their own self-interest because they have been convinced by the really obscenely wealthy that they are all temporarily-embarrassed millionaires.

The reality is that most of the US is at most three lost paychecks or a bad injury away from complete destitution.

[–]Iwasseriousface 3 points4 points ago

Three? If I got fired today I would be living out of my car by the end of the month and starving. I grew up being told "go to a good college, and you'll get a great job", so I did. Now I have twice my annual wages in debt, and I still eat ramen most meals to be able to keep up with my student loan payments.

[–]KToff 36 points37 points ago

Living in Europe I thought: "yeah? so what? Isn't that what he is required by law anyways?"

[–]R_Jeeves 22 points23 points ago

No, because he's an individual, and therefore his freedom to do whatever the fuck he wants with his business is the single most important thing in the entire universe, far more important than making sure people are actually being allowed to have accidents and unexpected illness without losing their jobs because the guy is a dick.

[–]aaneton 7 points8 points ago

Usually longer sick leaves the employees salary is paid by the govement, so it's not much additional cost for the employer (except finding a temp for the sick one during longer sick leaves).

[–]Vorketh 12 points13 points ago

You may be disgusted to hear that the US does not require companies to provide any sick leave at all. A great many companies thus do not pay you for the duration you are out, whether it is the flu or recovering from surgery... Assuming they don't fire you using some made up reason, which is legal. Most states do not require a reason to fire someone.

[–]geusebio 5 points6 points ago

Good grief. You guys really are indentured out there.

[–]Ravek 4 points5 points ago

Corporations are people too!

[–]DefinitelyRelephant 54 points55 points ago

Treating people humanely doesn't look good to the shareholders, though.

[–]motrjay 4 points5 points ago

Retaining talent is important to shareholders yes.

[–]navx2810 24 points25 points ago

shareholders; no. Stakeholders; yes.

[–]chcampb 3 points4 points ago

Yeah, but Valve is still private.

[–]shaim2 5 points6 points ago

We are supposed to design laws which shape society in the direction we want it to take (compassionate, etc), not to maximize shareholder value.

The concepts of private ownership, capitalism, etc - they are all tools we employ to make sure we get the society we want. That's why it's OK to tax people, taking their money, in order to provide for the public good. And that is why it's OK to have laws that may hurt shareholders in one particular situation or another, but overall benefit society.

And while you can certainly go too far with the above approach, most of the civilized world would agree that laws permitting a company to fire someone for having cancer are detrimental to society.

[–]Knorssman 6 points7 points ago

it will if treating people humanely led to having more customers and therefore more profits

and considering how much we all love Valve that seems to work pretty well, but sometimes changes like this are slow to happen to the industry as a whole under the current paradigm

[–]Zenitram 1 point2 points ago

You know what, companies should pay people's families after their death too!

[–]Knorssman 0 points1 point ago

using force to make everyone "treat people humanly" is not the answer though

edit: a word

[–]ouyawei 14 points15 points ago

Why?

[–]saintgadreel 3 points4 points ago

Unfortunately this is the question that SHOULDN'T be asked. If you believe all people are inherently good, then you are a fool. We have laws, and we have them to govern all people equally. Even that system has failed, because all people aren't poor. The rich dictate on a constant basis what should or should not be legalized. They do so for the benefit of their ability to capitalize, not on the humane treatment of their fellow man. If you have to ask WHY, you've already sold yourself up the river. When you are sick to the point YOU can't work, would you want your employer to have the option to terminate you, both in financial and quite literally physical terms? If you think that is justified, you are part of the problem, not the solution.

[–]thosethatwere 8 points9 points ago

You misunderstood the guy you replied to. The first guy is saying that we shouldn't force the rich to help the poor and the guy you replied to asked why we shouldn't.

[–]saintgadreel 5 points6 points ago

You make a damn good point. I have edited my original post, and ask forgiveness from the internet in general. That point aside, I stand behind what I said, in the context I intended. I hope others will understand.

[–]TASagent 2 points3 points ago

Indeed. I had attempted to restate the context, so you could see that you agreed with the person you were criticizing, but failed to realize that if you were already convinced I was saying the opposite of what I actually was, you could misunderstand what I was meant with "Simple mistake?"

[–]saintgadreel 2 points3 points ago

Fair enough, good sir or madam. I apologize. Feel free to downvote me appropriately.

[–]TASagent 2 points3 points ago

Meh, I still agree that companies need to be forced to treat their workers ethically, otherwise they won't. I just loathe being misunderstood.

[–]saintgadreel 2 points3 points ago

As do I. I believe we have found some common ground.

[–]TASagent 0 points1 point ago

I don't see how your comment is relevant to the comment you responded to. Did you mistake ouyawei's comment as a response to someone else?

Edit for clarity:

Knorssman said that we shouldn't force everyone to "treat people humanely"

ouyawei asked "why?"

You responded arguing that people (companies) generally won't be treat others (employees) humanely unless they're forced to. Simple mistake?

[–]rxninja 21 points22 points ago

For anyone curious, this is from "The Final Hours of Portal 2." It's on Steam and iPad. It's $1.99.

[–]major_redditor 47 points48 points ago

Oh I thought it was from the other million times someone posted it to Reddit.

[–]nobody25864 5 points6 points ago

How much do you love him, exactly?

/r/gabengonewild

[–]Festivalen 93 points94 points ago

repost, repost and repost everywhere.

[–]samsaBEAR 14 points15 points ago

I'm not usually one to call out reposts, but jesus christ this was on here like a couple of days ago

[–]ZeroNihilist 4 points5 points ago

It doesn't matter. Every time we call upon the name of Gaben we weaken the psychic field that is suppressing Halflife 3. Soon it will be gone entirely and the G-Man and the Free-Man will cut a swath of destruction across the country side in preparation for the game itself.

Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Gaben R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn!

[–]WhyAreYouNotStudying 10 points11 points ago

I remember posting this like a year ago on my old account. I even made the picture.

Glad to see Gaben is still getting recognition for being such an amazing boss.

[–]Rinkeli 41 points42 points ago

GABE NEWELL > HITLER YEAH!

[–]Alexp1a1 35 points36 points ago

Why can't we all have bosses like that?

[–]HashBR 51 points52 points ago

Bosses? I want everyone to be like this! Bosses, employees. whatever you are!

[–]Cemo9999 19 points20 points ago

Even the creepy-looking female janitor?

[–]Gary_the_Goatfucker 25 points26 points ago

Even the creepy cleaning lady.

[–]Agaac1 22 points23 points ago

Especially the creepy cleaning lady

[–]Zarkx 10 points11 points ago

Stop talking about my mom that way.

[–]saintgadreel 4 points5 points ago

SHE'S A NICE LADY!!!!

[–]Nachteule 2 points3 points ago

Because not all bosses/companys are rich like Gabe in the first place - some barely make it every day and if even one person is sick and does not work they are in seriouse financial trouble.

[–]MisterNucularWarlord 3 points4 points ago

LE GABEN FOR LE WARCHIEF 2013! HOOT HOOT HOOT HOOT!

[–]mgd40 12 points13 points ago

Ulcerative Colitis sucks.

[–]scylian 10 points11 points ago

Well, now we know why Half-Life 3 is taking forever.

He just keeps letting all of his writers go home and be a family man.

[–]o_oli 9 points10 points ago

I'm happy to wait if that is the case!

[–]Bland_Boy 3 points4 points ago

Gaben. Gay ben or Ga Ben ot Gab en? Why not just gabe. Everybody knows who you speak of anyway.

[–]digbus 20 points21 points ago

another repost on reddit? can't be..

[–]forthefortune 1 point2 points ago

I've upvoted this at least 20 times, and I would do it again.

[–]UpBoat420 3 points4 points ago

Why would you want to actively make gaming a worse place

[–]refreakz 26 points27 points ago

Everyone loves Gabe; with good reason.

Until he makes pointless changes to the TOS.

[–]sunnaydee 5 points6 points ago

Actually the new ToS is basically the same as the old ones. Stop bitching.

[–]refreakz 5 points6 points ago

You missed the point, it was a smart ass remark to everyone who keeps bitching.

I support valve in everything they do; sorry for the confusion.

[–]Bromagnon 6 points7 points ago

Valve instigates fines for incorrect username entry

GABEN SAVES THE WORLD FROM POOR GRAMMAR

[–]RightousRepulican 23 points24 points ago

Like DIS IF U CRY Evrytime

[–]Fenrirr 4 points5 points ago

10/10 would like three times

[–]royalshotput 12 points13 points ago

The world is in dire need of more people like this. All things aside this is what we all should strive to be like as human beings. You dont have to be Gaben to show a little kindness. Im a medic in the army and you would be amazed at how a small bit of kindness in this world of shit will do to make a person's day a little better. Plus, it knocks you down on the "going postal sniper target list" which is always something to strive for.

[–]nevets78 8 points9 points ago

See reddit doesn't hate ALL fat people!

[–]Residue 8 points9 points ago

All minus Gabe.

[–]rysty 7 points8 points ago

how to get upvoted, repost something successful from a few months ago so that either enough people have forgotten, or enough new people come to upvote you

[–]xhupsahoy 1 point2 points ago

Gaben metes out more best justice while he's looking for snacks than the supreme court does in a century.

[–]UpBoat420 3 points4 points ago

This is why I hate /r/gaming!!

[–]OnmyojiOmn 9 points10 points ago

I see the ToS issue wasn't enough to tamp down r/gaming's massive Gaben circlejerk.

This seems more like damage control from fanbois.

[–]Txmedic 3 points4 points ago

Gaben>bane. Gabe never gives you permission to die

[–]GamerKT 4 points5 points ago

G A B E N

B A N E

Gaben is an anagram of G. Bane. Good Bane.

[–]speckontheground 0 points1 point ago

Original article please...Anyone?

[–]Elerabin21k 0 points1 point ago

I've seen this half a dozen times and the final line STILL gets me to chuckle every damn time.

If I had a boss and a job like that, damn rights I'd feel the same way.

[–]sumphatguy 1 point2 points ago

Thanks for underlining that for us! Totally would not have seen what a great guy Gaben is without your help.

[–]Tulki 2 points3 points ago

Erik: "Mr. Newell, I need to quit to get better."

Gabe: "Uhh, nope." and then Erik was cured and everything on steam was unlocked for his account.

[–]LivetoGeek 0 points1 point ago

Oh god gaben... gaben.... Gaben, gaben, yes gaben, GAAAAABEEEEENNNN!

[–]Shabbering 2 points3 points ago

Guys, every time anyone says anything Gabe related it just turns into a circle jerk. Its frustrating to those of us who are actually in tune with our mental faculties.

Hows this for a novel idea, how about we talk about the games that Valve makes, you know, the actual developers and designers and not just attribute everything to Gabe. We need to give credit to the rest of the team and not just one person.

[–]thatusernameisal 1 point2 points ago

You have to love him, what other option do you have? You can't sue him.

[–]meesta_masa 0 points1 point ago

I' sure someone has said this before, but its gotta be said again. Good. Guy. Gaben.

[–]mortimerkhan 1 point2 points ago

Woah. I had ulcerative colitis in college one November when I couldn't find a job. My father told me that I would be much better off using my time finding a job rather than coming home for Thanksgiving, and that he hoped I starved under a bridge like all the other deadbeat bums. So I spent Thanksgiving day by myself shitting blood, going through the worst pain I've ever imagined and ultimately ending up in the emergency room. Some leniency during that sort of ordeal seems pretty cool.

tl;dr I wish Gaben was my father.

[–]Cryos 0 points1 point ago

For the amount of flack gabe always gets for the length of time to develop games it is 100% of the time completely unjust.. This is what companies everywhere should be like, their responsibility should be to the community.

Its heartening to see the amount of effort that gabe and crew go through to communicate and build relationships with their fans, i think we have all seen people sending a "Good Job" mail to gabe's mail address and getting back some gear.

[–]gornischo 0 points1 point ago

Whoa. You guys are screwed! This is normal in my country.

[–]LivelyRoyale[!] 0 points1 point ago

To Gabe - Never turn into Blizzard.

[–]ThePWNCookie 0 points1 point ago

This shit has been posted for a billion of times. The only upvotes come from valve drones

[–]Mardoxx 0 points1 point ago

BETTER PUT THIS IN AN IMAGE, THEN SUBMIT TO REDDIT FOR USELESS INTERNET POINTS!

[–]boong1986 -1 points0 points ago

Yep, because a good guy releases a new subscriber agreement forcing user to either sign their rights away, or lose all their purchases.

[–]ass_kicker32 1 point2 points ago

And thats how the writers behind OMM and Psychonauts wrote Portal and Portal 2.

[–]4c51 3 points4 points ago

"Do you want to come out to Seattle and write video games and have money fights?"

[–]225lbs 2 points3 points ago

"Okay! Who threw the silver dollar?!"

[–]Hamtime 2 points3 points ago

oh look, its this post again

[–]slayemin 1 point2 points ago

I'm a seattle programmer and I'd work at Valve in a heart beat if I could :)

[–]TehWRYYYYY -2 points-1 points ago

I'll upvote this every time I see it.

Gaben love beats Repost hate

[–]TheGlowingRogue 0 points1 point ago

You can log off, but you can never leave.

[–]Fuglypump -1 points0 points ago

I will work at Valve some day.

[–]asfasfassaf 1 point2 points ago

it hasn't even been 2 months since I last saw this >_>

[–]blagoonga123 1 point2 points ago

Why is "Erik" underlined?

[–]luvz -1 points0 points ago

Oldie, but goodie.

[–]senics 0 points1 point ago

I love the fact that most of the people on reddit don't use his real name in the, Gabe Newell.

[–]throw_a_un_away 1 point2 points ago

I work for Capcom in Vancouver. A guy at work just got a month off because his wife was sick and needed surgery. Most compassionate employer I've ever had.

[–]Biggar 0 points1 point ago

As can be found in Portal 2: The final hours, for everyone who's wondering.

[–]lth5015 0 points1 point ago

wat?

[–]bahamutstevetff 0 points1 point ago

And ive just been told i will be fired if i dont improve, because im struggling to do stuff i haven't been shown how to do :(

I wish all bosses where that awesome.

[–]KRZ-111 0 points1 point ago

I love how he said it,too. Not joking or anything. He was totally serious. His tone implied that if Erik DIDN'T get better, Gaben would personally fuck him up. And then get him better.

[–]sporkwaffles 1 point2 points ago

ITT Europeans are laughing.

[–]degoban 0 points1 point ago

To be fair his employees generate more money than the employees of any other company.

[–]Walnut156 -1 points0 points ago

New dream job: work at valve

[–]The_A_Drain 0 points1 point ago

People realize Steam's TOS is for all intents and purposes the same as any other online DRM system.

"WE LOVE GABEN!!!" reposts distract everyone.

For you see the jerk it has for some time now been most circular.

[–]Ninryoku -1 points0 points ago

Oh god. Reading this gave me so many feels. SO MANY

[–]Laowai-Mang 0 points1 point ago

My grandfather had a boss like this. They payed him his full salary for a year when he was stuck in the hospital and at home after he had a nasty aneurysm. He had to relearn to walk and talk before he could go back to work. I guess it did help that he revolutionized the whole steel mill by being the first to computerize the whole thing. He was really lucky he had his aneurysm when he did, a few years earlier and the procedure that saved his life (I don't know much about it but it involved cooling his whole body waaaaaay down) wouldn't have existed.

/I miss my grandpa.

[–]_Wolfos 0 points1 point ago

From the 'Portal 2 - the final hours' eBook that's on Steam. It's a great read, I can recommend it to everyone.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

"Your Job", said I, "Is to post original content. That was your one job."

[–]xandora 0 points1 point ago

One of the guys from work has Colitis. He's been off work for over a month now. Pretty sure he's not coming back to work though.

[–]quickdraw46 0 points1 point ago

I will not lie, as a game developer and working under crap conditions most of my carrier. I cried a little when I read that for the first time. Working at Valve is a dream job for everyone.

[–]RockHardRetard 0 points1 point ago

So this was like, the 26th time this has been posted?

[–]blanketyblanks -1 points0 points ago

so happy this has been reposted again

[–]Sle 0 points1 point ago

Cool! Hadn't seen this posted in nearly a week!

Love the ensuing debate that plays out the same every time.

[–]iamtheowlman 0 points1 point ago

As a guy with UC, the idea of being able to shoot a portal into any flat surface, and having instant access to a toilet (the other portal permanently situated right above the seat) is extraordinarily attractive.

[–]Shuraiya -1 points0 points ago

The man is simply a legend.

[–]8e8 0 points1 point ago

Valve: Once you're in, there's no getting out.
camera pans to Gabe in an evil guy swivel chair doing his best menacing laugh

[–]kennedy2g 1 point2 points ago

As much as I love this quote, it was better the first time, not the 30th time

[–]Wyndikan 0 points1 point ago

Wasn't this on Reddit years ago and the dude did an AMA and confirmed everything?

[–]erythro 0 points1 point ago

[–]mrwhippy102 0 points1 point ago

Consider the Real Man status officially awarded to this guy.

[–]darkhawk1005 0 points1 point ago

I love how this is one of the most upvotes pictures on r/gaming and yet it somehow get this many upvotes for a repost.

[–]sandrajumper 0 points1 point ago

I have ulcerative colitis too. I love you man.

[–]0x6d61726b 0 points1 point ago

I have immense respect for this guy.

[–]Ozzdo 0 points1 point ago

The guy in the story, Erik, confirmed this, didn't he? I really want this to be true. With all the praise we heap on Gabe, it's nice to know it's earned by more than just good games.

[–]PatrckBateman 1 point2 points ago

How many times has this been reposted now? Why does old shit always make it to the front page?

[–]sgtmattkind -1 points0 points ago

best overly reposted repost ever

[–]Roommates69 0 points1 point ago

Only 2 sick leaves....ever

[–]el_Maripoes -1 points0 points ago

How the fucking fucking fuck did this post get so many downvotes?

[–]TompanX -1 points0 points ago

Gabe the slave owner.
