It's like an ancient greek statue, but with less finesse and more PPSH

[–]grandom 144 points145 points ago

For someone so far removed ideologically I fucking love Soviet iconography.

[–]Hyperion1001 35 points36 points ago

Me too, i actually had this discussion in another thread about Russian/Soviet monuments/iconography. Those concrete monstrosities look so cool.

[–]alreadytakenusername 27 points28 points ago

[–]SrsSteel 8 points9 points ago

Wow this was a fascinating read, I had no idea of the wonders that existed in Russia. Their "Peterhof" makes our everything look like crap

[–]Soviet_Waffle 110 points111 points ago

Amen, brother.

Soviet Russia, elevating women to be equal to men before it was cool.

[–]TexasWithADollarsign 60 points61 points ago

Damn straight. They both suffered equally. The system works!

[–]feureau 7 points8 points ago

And when they reached the pinnacle of their decadence, we returned to finish the job.

[–]xaronax 2 points3 points ago

Cause when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little potato for the rest of us.

[–][deleted] ago

[–]TexasWithADollarsign 11 points12 points ago

Does lack of food count?

[–]procrasti-nation 9 points10 points ago

Yeah, but only ideologically.

In reality it mostly meant that women had to do all the housekeeping after work.

[–]Jonthrei 7 points8 points ago

While their iconography is absolutely stunning (and boy can they build subway systems), I wasn't the biggest fan of their architecture. Moscow residents don't call them the seven ugly sisters for nothing. (I lived in Moscow for 3 years in the 90s)

Though to be fair, among semi-modern European buildings, I suppose they are above par.

[–]Ptoss 5 points6 points ago

looks like gordon ramsey

[–]sreguera 13 points14 points ago

"Stalingrad" by Frank Miller.

[–]candygram4mongo 20 points21 points ago

Yeah, but he'd probably make it about a heroic Wehrmacht officer, rather than portray the Soviets positively.

[–]misterpickles69 4 points5 points ago

And every woman in Russia would be a prostitute.

[–]zolzks -1 points0 points ago

less finesse and more PPSH

What, are you not impressed enough by the dumbbell to comment on it?

[–]warnmir 46 points47 points ago

I think that's a grenade.

[–]obilex 35 points36 points ago

[–]cholo_aleman 15 points16 points ago

that trigger seems awfully dangerous.

[–]Cebs 40 points41 points ago

It is.

[–]Umpa 6 points7 points ago

[–]zolzks 3 points4 points ago

Dude just accept it. He is doing curls, not throwing. Look at the angle of his arm.

[–]cmotdibbler 2 points3 points ago

Anyone else think that the statue looks a bit like Ronald Reagan?

[–]WeLoveKanjimari 53 points54 points ago

ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?! by giant statues

[–]poptart2nd 12 points13 points ago

i see it as more of a "COME AT ME, BRO!" which would make more sense, given that it's in honor of the victory at Stalingrad.

[–]mequals1m1w 12 points13 points ago

Female statue: Look at that explosion over there!

Male statue: Bitch please.

[–]chivasregalguy1 174 points175 points ago

Its Stalingrad. Its famous statue, also visit Saint Petersburg. It is beautiful !

[–]ivquatch 150 points151 points ago

Read this in stereotypical Russian accent.

[–]beergoggles69 104 points105 points ago

Just need to replace any 'its' with 'is'.

[–]nathris 74 points75 points ago

is stalingrad, famous statue!!!!!!!! also visit st petersburg, russia best!!! )))))))

[–]owarren 52 points53 points ago

The brackets at the end of your sentence let me know that you too have felt the pain of playing video games with Russians.

[–]Roopa132 15 points16 points ago

I love playing with Russians. Back in my Battlefield 2 times I used to play with the most stereotypical Russian guy. He was like forty years old and always heavily drinking, yet he never was drunk; and he spoke in a thick accent and he was hilarious. Made the game so much more entertaining.

[–]TeBags 5 points6 points ago

I'm curious, what's with the brackets? Just a habit?? (There is a similar thing here in Korea, many sentences are followed by ~~~)

[–]nathris 29 points30 points ago

Its a Russian smiley face. The longer it is, the happier they are. ))))))

[–]TeBags 29 points30 points ago

спасибо! )))))))))))))

[–]BulletBilll 47 points48 points ago

(((((((((((((((((((((((( I'm bipolar )))))))))))))))))))))))))

[–]Schmogel 14 points15 points ago

You forgot one opening bracket.

[–]Redios 5 points6 points ago

If your keyboard is set in cyrrilic you can't type colon symbol and you will have to press alt+shift to switch to latin, then shift + semicolon to make it work. We have letter "Ж" on colon so most people just ignore switching and put few brackets instead of colon-bracket.

[–]larionov 3 points4 points ago

Well, you can. It's on the key 6.

[–]Uono 7 points8 points ago

Is Stalingrad. Is famous statue. Also visit Saint Petersburg. Is butiful.

[–]what_dawn_what_doom 3 points4 points ago

Why does everyone seem to be proud of failing Russian Accent 101?

[–]I_CAPE_RATS 9 points10 points ago

Это Сталинград. Его знаменитая статуя, а также посетить Санкт-Петербург. Это прекрасно!

[–]corrects_bad_russian 49 points50 points ago

Been doing this a lot, time to make an account for it.

Not "Его" but "Это". Not "статуя", but "памятник".

Not "посетить", but "а так же реккомендую посетить" or "а так же посетите".

"Это прекрасно" makes no sense in context. You probably wanted "Это очень красивый город".

[–]I_CAPE_RATS 31 points32 points ago

Летию славной Июльской революции, товарищи! Трактор! Репа! Ягодицы!

[–]Irralfar 5 points6 points ago

Hahah that was pretty hillarious

[–]MrKimimaru 2 points3 points ago

Hey! I know some of these letters!

[–]deNULL 5 points6 points ago

Still a bit wrong. "Так же" in this case must be spelled as one word, "также", and there's one "к" in "рекомендую".

[–]ivquatch 4 points5 points ago

That's exactly what I was thinking.

[–]what_dawn_what_doom 10 points11 points ago

You think in ungrammatical, borderline-meaningless Google Translate sentences?

[–]ivquatch 3 points4 points ago

I already did!

[–]SinofOmission 27 points28 points ago

[–]bayyorker 35 points36 points ago

At first I was like, "hey thats pretty cool." But then I saw how big the people were.....annnddd now I want to go to Russia.

[–]fidelay 18 points19 points ago

The city is Volgograd now. Just like St. Petersburg used to be Leningrad.

Edit: it's more than just a famous statue. It is the worlds tallest statue; Mother Russia. She stands on the top of the hill of where the battle of Stalingrad took place. The battle of Stalingrad was where the Russians stopped the Germans from heading east and helped win WWII.

Edit: Apparently not the tallest. I was wrong. Everything I've ever known is a lie.

[–]p1r4nh4 2 points3 points ago

[–]this-username 13 points14 points ago

There was an old Russian saying about Saint Petersburg from the early 20th century: "I was born in Saint Petersburg, I live in Leningrad, and I'll die in Saint Petersburg." Just thought it was cool to share.

[–]koshdim 2 points3 points ago

this saying is actually "I was born in Saint Petersburg, I live in Leningrad, and I'll die in Peter.", because "Peter" is how Russians call St. Petersburg now

[–]AlternativeCarpark 7 points8 points ago

I heard this as a joke in the early 1980s: Old man goes into the Ministry of Internal Affairs (?) to apply for a permit to move. The official gets out a form and says "Where were you born?". The old man says "St Petersburg". "Where did you go to school?" "Petrograd." "Where do you live?" "Leningrad." "Where do you want to go to?" "St Petersburg!"

[–]propyl21 4 points5 points ago

Looks like Ben. The protagonist from the Full Throttle game by LucasArts

Edit: on cell phone, difficult to edit html linking.

[–]Amm0 0 points1 point ago

That place from Goldeneye 64?

[–]Irralfar 2 points3 points ago

Was born in this city, but now my family moved to another one. It is definately worth visiting cause its located on Volga river which is a biggest river in Europe

[–]PsiAmp 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, Saint Petersburg has the best Lenin statue in the whole ex-USSR.

http://i.imgur.com/KjdOT.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/TZWur.jpg

jk, other than that it is a beautiful city.

[–]TWOoneEIGHT 33 points34 points ago

(Not so) fun fact about the hill this is built on. The fighting in the vicinity of the hill was so severe that the constant fighting and shelling actually caused the hill to lose several degrees of elevation and height during the Battle of Stalingrad.

[–]CrazyCatLady108 17 points18 points ago

and is hit by lightning virtually every storm.

[–]ridger5 14 points15 points ago

Thor's hammer is housed within that sword.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

Lots of unexploded ordinance still in the area too IIRC.

[–]Raneados 102 points103 points ago

Holy shit that's the manliest fucking statue I've ever fucking seen.

It's almost cartoonish in its manliness.

Fucking hell I'd never be able to live near that. Every day I'd look out the window, oreo in-hand, and go "fuck you statue, stop making me feel bad!"

[–]yoda133113 48 points49 points ago

You're looking at it all wrong. You look out the window and say, "Statue, because of you, I will be more manly today!" And you live your day, just a bit more manly because of the inspiration of the statue...everyday.

[–]Raneados 7 points8 points ago

Pfft ain't no statue gonna inspire me, but you can bet your bippy I'll gladly use it as an excuse!

[–]triguy45 5 points6 points ago

Does anybody else think that statue looks a lot like Gordon Ramsay?

[–]never_listens 8 points9 points ago

Soviet war memorial in Berlin. The man doesn't even need guns. He protects children from nazis using his giant ass sword.

[–]the_goat_boy 22 points23 points ago

Who would win in a fight? The Motherland Calls or the Statue of Liberty?

Edit: This is how the victor of the Cold War should have been decided, a fight between those two.

[–]CrazyCatLady108 53 points54 points ago

motherland calls. mainly because of the sword but also because liberty is 151 feet tall without the pedestal and motherland calls is 279 feet.

[–]brews 17 points18 points ago

Motherland.

Liberty is such a poser.

[–]Cabooses1fan 90 points91 points ago

Dat ppsh

[–]Speall 38 points39 points ago

ppsh, that's nothin'.

[–]BCP27 13 points14 points ago

My friends always referred to it as the "Papa Shaw" while playing Nazi Zombies. It took me a great amount of time to realize they meant.

[–]Logi_Ca1 8 points9 points ago

That's actually how the Russians affectionately called the PPsh during the war, but you probably know this already.

[–]baylorod 22 points23 points ago

Someone really likes Chef Ramsay...

[–]Adan714 45 points46 points ago

Volgograd. I was there and I don't like it. I saw the reverse side of propaganda pathos.

I live in Russia all my life, first 16 years it was USSR, and I am sick of huge soviet war monuments. Too many propaganda like "Никто не забыт и ничто не забыто" (Nobody is forgotten and nothing is forgotten), but thousands of soldier's remains still lie around in forests and swamps. I dig some of them with my own hands, and cried.

Also, The Motherland with sword... Mother must not call to battle.

Visit Volgograd anyway - there is a lot of nice girls there. :)

[–]sonic_daydream 4 points5 points ago

And this comment lends some gravity to why these were built in the first place versus some of the other silly comments about these statues and how bad ass they are.

[–]Adan714 9 points10 points ago

These statues was build because cult Victory Day was kind of religion in USSR. And still is in Russia. Parade on Red Squre on official level. St. George Ribbon as non-official - peoples put it on dress or cars. First lesson in first class - Урок мужества (lesson of courage) with history of war. I think the Victory this is the last thing in our history and life that all russians proud for.

I know a little bit too much about that, and my proud is very bitter.

[–]thebart 0 points1 point ago

Some years ago I saw in a tv-program, that some scumbags are digging down to the bodies of the fallen russian soldiers from WW2, just to steal their medals and sell them. Soviet soldiers in WW2 were buried with their medals on their chest.

It made me very sad to see.

But it also showed that many decent people are volunteering to collect the remains of fallen soldiers, who were not buried properly, and give them a decent burial and collect their dog tags, and inform the families where they were found.

[–]Adan714 2 points3 points ago

Emm... I think the tv-program was about digging down not russian, but german soldiers. All german cemeteries was digged a lot of times to get some stuff - buckle belts, dogtag, knifes etc.

Almost nothing to get from our soldiers, medals very rare but cost nothing. Lot of veterans gave their medals to children after premium money for medals was cancelled.

Well, we gave the remains to official searching squad ("поисковый отряд") so they can bury it proper. Only 10% of russian soldiers has dog tags, 1% write their names on it (russian dogtags was roll of paper in little plastic pencil-box).

All WW2 stories in Russia are full of tears, blood and bitterness. I can talk about that for hours.

[–]tisnolie 19 points20 points ago

[–]Raneados 14 points15 points ago

:O

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spring_Temple_Buddha

For being an amazingly bigass statue, I've never heard of this!

[–]mindbleach 16 points17 points ago

I like to think that the Buddhist practice of building absurdly large statues will eventually extend to terraforming an entire valley into one, then founding a city on its body.

[–]Raneados 12 points13 points ago

Every once ina while when browsing the internet, I discover something that I had previous not know I REALLY REALLY REALLY wanted to do.

Today, Giant Statue Building shoots real close to the top of that list.

Although I've always had a weird love for giant statues. Finding out that there are a LOT of them in the world makes me want to make my own.

One of the saddest days of my life was discovering that The Colossus of Rhodes was not as massive as I thought it was.

[–]mindbleach 2 points3 points ago

On a long enough timescale, you could divert a river over a plateau and let it carve out a relief based on the initial channels you cut.

[–]Raneados 8 points9 points ago

Dude I sometimes skip having to chew my food by mushing it all up and mixing it with whatever I'm drinking.

I ain't got time for no precise channel digging and centuries of carefully-recorded erosion.

[–]mindbleach 4 points5 points ago

Dynamite it is!

[–]Whanhee 6 points7 points ago

This should be a wonder in Civilization (the game).

[–]mcstafford 7 points8 points ago

Why do they have a statue of Ronald Reagan?

[–]SIRPORKSALOT 4 points5 points ago

Thanks, its not just me afterall. There are people out there, somewhere, who see as I see. Fucking scary.

[–]polyrhachis 6 points7 points ago

Two things they pointed out when I visited the statue: (1) You could drive a car along her sword. (2) She is reaching towards Berlin.

[–]jwdcxp 3 points4 points ago

It looks like Ronald Reagan.

[–]eginnard 6 points7 points ago

is that a shake-weight in his hand?

[–]strel1337 3 points4 points ago

Oh yes, please, visit soon. Although I would say it a bit different.

[–]what_dawn_what_doom 3 points4 points ago

It.

Google Translate's an it.

[–]verrtex 1 point2 points ago

From the way he/she said it, it is clear that he/she is not a native speaker.

[–]justbecausewhynot 2 points3 points ago

Even the statue has that Russian facial feature look. Im impressed.

[–]Senor_Manos 1 point2 points ago

That guy has rock-hard abs

[–]Sleepyjack87 2 points3 points ago

I didn't realize Gordon Ramsey was such a big deal over there.

[–]polandpower 1 point2 points ago

Just remember that for every muscle in this statue, Stalin killed about a hundred thousand innocent people.

[–]PsiAmp 4 points5 points ago

You may also want to visit Kiev, Ukraine. We have a beautiful WWII museum with a 62m tall Mother Motherland monument.

It's Gordon Ramsey with a Striker!!!

[–]TheGizmojo 7 points8 points ago

[–]guthpasta 2 points3 points ago

Russia was one of the best trips of my life. My father and I just went on a riverboat cruise from Moscow to St. Petersburg. It was amazing.

[–]therealdohr 10 points11 points ago

Charlie Sheen is huge in Russia

[–]mindfungus 5 points6 points ago

Ronald Reagan is bigger in Russia

[–]WingedTutor 2 points3 points ago

To feel wildly inadequate? Because that's how I feel.

[–]TotalBeefcake 2 points3 points ago

That's a nice Nick Nolte statue.

[–]aeneasfate 2 points3 points ago

For some reason, my brain cannot see anything other than a statue of Bruce Campbell after coughing up time travel.

[–]callmemayday 2 points3 points ago

Does that look like Nathan Fillion to anyone else?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

You better visit soon, because it will become structurally unsafe due to its rather unique features as the world's largest free-standing statue.

[–]scrumptiouscakes 2 points3 points ago

There's a really great documentary about Stalinist architecture on youtube that you might enjoy - here's a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sn_L3fcZXL8

[–]FifeeBoy 1 point2 points ago

Is that a statue of an Asari in the back ground?

[–]jibuzaemon 2 points3 points ago

A statue of Gordon Ramsay with a PPSh?

[–]Quibbage101 0 points1 point ago

Are you not entertained?!?

[–]marcus_ivo 2 points3 points ago

[–]NueDumaz 0 points1 point ago

For statues of Arnold Schwarzenegger?

[–]Vinc3ntPh4m 2 points3 points ago

That statue behind is absolutely incredible...tallest in the world if I remember correctly. Want to visit that some day.

[–]iamlew 2 points3 points ago

The background statue is just like, "LOOK AT ALL THE FUCKS WE GIVE"

[–]leophir 0 points1 point ago

I can hear the statue at the back screaming "come at us fuckers!"

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Welcome to Mammaev hill comrade! You're standing on the bodies of thousands of men, so be respectful....

[–]nbshark 0 points1 point ago

LOOK AT THAT CLOUD. LOOK AT IT!

[–]Stratocaster89 0 points1 point ago

Why have they got a statue of Gordon Ramsey?

[–]Blargame 0 points1 point ago

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that the Stalingrad memorial in Leningrad?

[–]lsqDrunkenMaster 1 point2 points ago

The statue in the front reminds me a bit of "Superman: Red Son". http://i.imgur.com/2L5Nb.jpg

[–]SlagTheSlig 6 points7 points ago

Oh man. I didn't know Gordon Ramsey was THAT popular.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

Yeah one thing about totalitarianism, its EPIC

[–]eldog 4 points5 points ago

Is he shooting his own dick off to prove his toughness?

[–]Emrico1 2 points3 points ago

[–]ViolaPurpurea 2 points3 points ago

I think the female looks even more badass, like "come at me bro" with that epic sword

[–]HomerWells 1 point2 points ago

Magnificent.

[–]meractus 1 point2 points ago

Anybody knows what is the guy holding? (what sort of gun, and is that a handgrenade?)

[–]ArcticBro[S] 11 points12 points ago

[–]vandidant 1 point2 points ago

I know this because of Red Orchestra 2 :D

[–]Cainophobe 7 points8 points ago

The grenade is an RPG40 anti-tank grenade.

[–]Kustav 9 points10 points ago

Oh.

I thought he was casually lifting dumbells while staving off the invasion of the facists.

[–]betona 1 point2 points ago

Россия isn't exactly a touristy destination, but it's a damned cool place to to visit. I hired what turned out to be a history teacher for a day using toursbylocals.com and had the most fascinating day.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

So there's the statue they made of me!

[–]TropicalBlend 0 points1 point ago

It's in Volgograd, formerly Stalingrad. The name was changed for obvious reasons

[–]m4SsR3zz 1 point2 points ago

Taken in Volgograd, russia. Its the statue of motherland, statue in the memory of fallen soldiers during WWII.

[–]JayhawkLegal 1 point2 points ago

Go to Russia. You won't regret it, or forget it.

[–]ivquatch 0 points1 point ago

Looks like a Marvel comic character.

[–]johnfoof 0 points1 point ago

That statue looks like nick nolte.

[–]whatsaphoto 0 points1 point ago

Took a second look to realize that it was a huge fucking statue.

[–]BobbyDigital_ncsu -1 points0 points ago

now is he inserting or removing that gigantic butt plug in/from his ass?

[–]psychroclasm -1 points0 points ago

Does that statue in the back have a name? I want to look it up. It's beautiful, and it appears to be ridiculously massive.

[–]ManOfTheHour1 1 point2 points ago

It almost looks like Charlie Sheen.........

[–]zeejoo12 1 point2 points ago

I just got back from russia, I can provide proof if you would like, but all of moscow is covered in impressive, daunting and eerie. The thing that had the biggest impression on me? The Kremlin. After growing up thinking of the Russians as Americas Biggest rivals, walking inside the walls was almost scary. Glad to answer any questions about russia anyone has

[–]mindbleach 0 points1 point ago

I'll grant the Soviets this - they did not fuck around when it came to scale.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I've had The Motherland Calls as my desktop background for ages. Totally fascinated by it and would love to witness her in person.

[–]cjstop 0 points1 point ago

Is it just me or does the statue in the background look fucking massive?

[–]Eighm 0 points1 point ago

One of my roommates went to Russia over the summer last year and brought home lots of pictures. Russian art and architecture are awesome.

[–]whomad1215 1 point2 points ago

I like the statue in the background.

"Look at all the fucks I give!"

[–]rac3r5 0 points1 point ago

Umm, how do I get abs like those?

[–]Jastook 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, Russian monuments are just breath taking. Thing is there's so many of them, even Russians have no idea what great monuments they have in Moscow alone.

[–]huntercunning 1 point2 points ago

I thought everyone signed the agreement to never make giant statues in humanoid form in case they ever became animated...

I've been looking for a clear picture of this statue's face forever! I've been making a 3d sculpt of it just for fun/practice and I've been seriously lacking reference. As far as i can tell its name is "Fight to the Bitter End" and its at Mamayev Kurgan in Volgograd Russia. For anyone interested you can take a virtual tour of the monument at http://www.stalingrad-battle.ru/docs/tour_mk/tour_kurgan.html

Ah the statues in Stalingrad, I think I remember the one in the background being the site of a massive battle for that hill.
