It's not actually real. It's a mock case study typically given to Law students to make them ponder culpability.

edit: Before someone asks for a source rather than GFGI.... http://www.snopes.com/horrors/freakish/opus.asp

[–][deleted] 136 points137 points ago

Nuh uh, it says true story.

[–]chuperamigo 40 points41 points ago

Murder-cide, it could happen to YOU!

[–]JesseBB 17 points18 points ago

Murdercide kills over 1 Americans every year!

[–]we_talk_about_butts 1 point2 points ago

Murder-ception

[–]futuremarine213 2 points3 points ago

Shut up, Meg.

[–]BrennenG 2 points3 points ago

I've had this same article read to me in under-grad and I can affirm that it is an article written for the purpose of pondering culpability.

[–]FuzzyRealist 18 points19 points ago

You know that moment when you don't pull out fast enough? It was still good but at the same time I feel a bit deflated now.

[–]Xanthan81 5 points6 points ago

Dad?

[–]rhods1 2 points3 points ago

I came across this one in both Moral Philosophy and Philosophy of Law courses.

[–]MadViper 0 points1 point ago

Same here.

[–]Davepen 3 points4 points ago

As per this guy.

It's also in the opening of the film Magnolia, which is really good btw.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

Is there a correct answer?

[–]silentkill144 1 point2 points ago

God dam fact checkers.......

[–]Xanthan81 0 points1 point ago

damn

[–]praise_the_almighty 0 points1 point ago

Yeah the first time I heard that story it happened in LA of the 60s or 50s.

[–]unrealious -4 points-3 points ago

And I was going to say that that was the most bizarre thing which I had ever read. Now I guess I have to burn my computer or shoot myself. Wait I can't hurt my computer, then I wouldn't be able to read reddit.

[–]KittenBraden 105 points106 points ago

Isn't this from the movie Magnolia?

[–]lookcloserlenny 36 points37 points ago

Magnolia used it, and because of this, people began to actually think it was real.

[–]ZM2N4AiP_A4 23 points24 points ago

Magnolia also used the scuba diver dead in the forest after being picked up in a firefighting airplane, and a murder in a town called Greenberry Hill by 3 men whose last names are/were Green, Berry, and Hill. Magnolia is an amazing film and these 3 vignettes(the two I mentioned and the one posted by the OP) are reflected on by the narrator in the end, having to do with chance, luck, etc.

Spelling

[–]tttruckit 2 points3 points ago

I just recently introduced my sister to this film. Sometimes being ten years older has it's advantages.

[–]DutchPrisoner 3 points4 points ago

The 3 vignettes are played at the beginning of the film

[–]ZM2N4AiP_A4 15 points16 points ago

And are reflected on in the end by the narrator

[–]honeybadga 1 point2 points ago

Why are we discussing salad dressing?

[–]Uriniass 3 points4 points ago

Bitches loves tossed salad

[–]Chicken-n-Waffles 1 point2 points ago

I like how it ties the raining frogs to everything at the end.

[–]ZM2N4AiP_A4 1 point2 points ago

Yes so perfect!

[–]andytuba 1 point2 points ago

it's really the only way they could justify the entire movie. but mostly the frogs.

[–]KittenBraden 1 point2 points ago

I knew it! I only skimmed though it, as the text was so blurry, but I thought I recognized it :)

This specific picture has. I have also seen text versions and other picture versions posted. Probably more like 50 times in the past 3 months...

[–]JBob250 6 points7 points ago

and its not just 50 times in the last 3 months, either. this stupid thing is at least a decade old!

[–]Aikarus 24 points25 points ago

AND IT'S UPVOTED BY PEOPLE THAT HAVE NOT SEEN IT BEFORE.

My fucking god, get this already. Not everyone has spent 10 years lurking the Internet.

[–]kousi 4 points5 points ago

First time I've seen it. All you people who shout "repost" on every repost are making me feel bad for not seeing every post, every time it's posted. I suppose I'll quit my job and devote my day to refreshing reddit's front page.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

And Apostolate was created.

[–]Aikarus 1 point2 points ago

Im starting to think they are sociopaths. They don't give a shit other people have not seen it. The Internet is made to please them, not anyone else. And they DEMAND new content.

[–]alps25 -4 points-3 points ago

Believe me, it's worse to actually have seen this 14 times.

[–]kousi 2 points3 points ago

It's only got a decent amount of upvotes twice.

[–]alps25 1 point2 points ago

That's somewhere between reassuring and bone-chilling.

[–]Ozwaldo -2 points-1 points ago

If there wasn't a constant churn of reposts, stuff would stay up longer and you'd be more likely to see it the first time.

[–]jkayak 0 points1 point ago

.

[–]Guess_My_Weight -1 points0 points ago

And every post has the same comments

[–]dexterdex 6 points7 points ago

Yep. It's not a real case, and it's used in the film Magnolia.

[–]HankyPankyMilk 52 points53 points ago

Holy fuck, how many time must this be reposted!?

[–]AffectiveMan 12 points13 points ago

[–]alexanderpas 2 points3 points ago

more like the fourteenth, but you're correct.

http://www.reddit.com/r/WTF/comments/xq2hx/mind_blown/c5onxcc

[–]Ginger_Slayer 6 points7 points ago

First time I've seen it. Reposts aren't here to annoy people who have already seen it, they also benefit people who haven't.

[–]elPusherman 2 points3 points ago

I agree..although I had heard about it from another friend who read it on reddit..I'm glad to see it for myself.

Also, if it's something most people have seen it wouldn't (shouldn't) be receiving so many upvotes.

[–]Ginger_Slayer 3 points4 points ago

I'm not saying everyone who complains about reposts is on here 24/7 and has no life, but I get a chance once every two days on average to hop on here so I'm happy to see stuff that I might have missed. The hypocrisy in everyone complaining is that this site would be dead if all material was brand new. And they would complain that it's dead. I see reposts all the time. On my favorite subs like ECards, I see reposts everyday. I simply move on. I don't understand why people get so mad.

[–]mookdaruch 5 points6 points ago

Let's bank on this karma. I'm thinking 3 weeks aught to do it. You can repost it first. I'll wait.

[–]docblue 1 point2 points ago

Now that I have seen it for the first time I believe that this will be enough.

[–]Eskelsar -1 points0 points ago

I guess the first time you saw it was the first time it had ever been posted, right?

[–]malaporpism 5 points6 points ago

I don't care if it's a repost and it's fake, that title gets pun points.

[–]chagspop 3 points4 points ago

[–]Ofreo 0 points1 point ago

I knew I saw it on something else as I read it. I loved that show. IIRC that was when they were debating who had the best crime story. And now on to the link to see if I was correct.

[–]pygmeking 0 points1 point ago

This had to be the most wtf worthy post I've read in a long time. Thanks for the post.

[–]airickanderson 1 point2 points ago

[–]Bagofshet 0 points1 point ago

Further investigation reveals that the shotgun was sold to opus from... Kaiser Soze

[–]max86234 1 point2 points ago

"The story was originally told by Don Harper Mills, then president of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, in a speech at a banquet in 1987. After it began to circulate on the Internet as a factual story and attained the status of urban legend, Mills stated that he made it up as an illustrative anecdote[1] 'to show how different legal consequences can follow each twist in a homicide inquiry.'"

[–]MensAgitatMolem 0 points1 point ago

Wouldn't the Man who shot the gun be Charged with Accidental Manslaughter or something, because he still fired a gun inside a building that just happened to hit a man.., like a stray bullet might.

[–]Boring_Machine 1 point2 points ago

If it sounds too good to be true, its too good to be true.

[–]Coolbeanz7 0 points1 point ago

Using this story in "Magnolia" to balance with the coincidences was a nice touch. Also, reminds one of the frogs falling from the sky scene...

[–]RedPanther1 0 points1 point ago

If that was for real I think it would be ruled manslaughter as the firing of the gun was intentional but the killing of the person was not.

I still feel like the guy who shot the gun should have been charged with manslaughter (I'm aware this isn't a real scenario). It's his responsibility to check the ammunition in his gun, so the excuse that he didn't know the gun was loaded is not valid.

[–]LondonTiger 0 points1 point ago

Immediately thought of "A 1000 Ways to Die"

[–]FatherEternity 0 points1 point ago

Repost aside, this thought experiment is 2nd degree manslaughter. The person responsible for pulling the trigger is the one that committed the act. There is not a 100% chance of death as there would be with poison. The father coincidentally killed his son. When a jury gets involved it becomes more based on feeling. But ethically speaking in this case, it is the act, not the intentions that determines the perpetrator.

[–]lealeaballerina 0 points1 point ago

Every upvote it has is because people have not seen it before.

[–]N8theGr8 1 point2 points ago

I'm not really sure. My meaning was that /r/wtf gets a lot of crap, and this is the sort of submission that actually makes you think a little bit.

/r/misc might be good.

TLDR

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]CaptainDickbag 1 point2 points ago

Though shot spreads a lot more than projectiles like bullets, it's not some magical device that allows the user to hit everything downrange without aiming.

Here's a writeup concerning shotguns. Spread is covered briefly there.

[–]uclaw44 -1 points0 points ago

Fake as it is, it is first degree felony murder in most states.

[–]Farvamus_prime 1 point2 points ago

I went down knowing someone would say something about this. He still shot a man. The father would be charged with at least manslaughter.

[–]uclaw44 0 points1 point ago

Someone died during the commission of a felony . That is enough for murder in most states even without intent to kill the deceased.
