[–]Obskulum 11 points12 points ago

Oh the pioneer's use to drive these babies for miles! And it's in great shape!

[–]spacebrony 1 point2 points ago

It's just a stupid pizza!

GASP Ska-*widward *!!!

[–]Jster1994 4 points5 points ago

came here to link this. Been using as background for a few months now.

[–]Beatleband12 1 point2 points ago

This is now my backround also.

[–]Captain_SCHWING 0 points1 point ago

I can see why.

[–]StonieJay -3 points-2 points ago

Same here.

[–]bipolardiabetic -1 points0 points ago

and now my background. Thanks OP for sharing... truly a beautiful picture.

[–]IMasturbateToMyself 99 points100 points ago

It's from Moraine Lake, Canada if anyone is interested.

[–]Jarom2 12 points13 points ago

Canada really has some of the most beautiful country out there.

[–]KittenyStringTheory 6 points7 points ago

Edit: I mixed up two Glacial Lakes (Moraine and Medicine) that I commonly take visitors to, at two ends of the Icefields Parkway Highway. It's a delightful drive; both parks, and both lakes are well worth it, and I obviously am a bit of a dope. But I love me some toothy mountains!

Story is still Funny: The Pallisades was the first thing I thought, and I came to the comments just to check. Thanks for the confirmation!

When my sister-in-law first visited canada, I brought her down this road. It was January, and -23, and she's from a place that stops the trains when it snows. By the time we went down to Maligne Canyon and back to Jasper townsite, she thought I was Evel Knievel and Wilderness Bob rolled into one.

It was sunny, and they'd cleared the road... but I was happy to accept drinks at her expense when we got back.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

I think you might be confused.

  1. This area is not called the palisades.
  2. This road is a cross country ski trail in the winter, and very few people ski in as far as the lake.
  3. It's about 300km away from jasper and maligne canyon.

[–]Ragnorok3141 0 points1 point ago

While that is correct, I think "Valley of the Ten Peaks" is a much more impressive name for it.

[–]WhatamIwaitingfor 3 points4 points ago

For some reason obvious reasons you can always tell when something is from Canada...

[–]draw_art 1 point2 points ago

Sorry.

[–]RollTide09 3 points4 points ago

LOL DAE CANADIANS ALWAYS APOLOGIZING xD

[–]Apisatrox 0 points1 point ago

Not all that different in the winter - just no lake. =)

[–]joeingo 1 point2 points ago

Thank you, now on my list of places to visit.

[–]fursworth 0 points1 point ago

I work at a campground not far from here! It's my favorite easily accessible lake in BNP.

[–]weedmoneylol 51 points52 points ago

i cant believe u guys have never heard of interfacelift. this is amazing but really your going to copy from them? go to their website if you want 5000 more "simply breathtaking" photos.

[–]cthulusaurus 8 points9 points ago

[–]Hark_An_Adventure 9 points10 points ago

Yep. I've got him tagged as "Stole someone else's work".

[–]sarty 0 points1 point ago

Yep, RES ftw

[–]AceoftheSwordz 19 points20 points ago

yeah this was my background image for like 5 months. i get all my backgrounds from interfacelift

[–]PretendCasual 9 points10 points ago

This used to be my background too. To think of all the lost karma from a picture I found on the Internet years ago.

[–]fgalv 6 points7 points ago

wallbase.cc is good too

[–]someone31988 1 point2 points ago

You can find a lot of interesting stuff there, but it's all ripped from other locations.

[–]cthulusaurus 24 points25 points ago

I have you RES-tagged as Photo-stealer: Downvote. I think it applies here as well. ಠ_ಠ

[–]NuclearJesus 3 points4 points ago

[–]Hopelesz 72 points73 points ago

Which part of Skyrim is this?

[–]Scottfra 27 points28 points ago

Wait, Canada is Skyrim.. My god time to go outside!!

[–]ABusFullaJewz 1 point2 points ago

Been here, most of Banff is pretty beautiful.

Wait, don't the NPC's in Skyrim occasionally say, "eh"? My god, I might be part Dovahkiin

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

the part that suffers boring composition and very amateur post processing it seems.

[–]feelinweird 10 points11 points ago

Yeah, I skip this part mainly because of the lack of dungeons.

[–]Moishaha 0 points1 point ago

Looks like Dear Esther, to me.

[–]buckygrad 1 point2 points ago

Skyrim reference. Must have spent all night thinking that comment up.

[–]rechtindeprullebak 13 points14 points ago

Is this Moraine lake Alberta?

[–]BurningChildren 6 points7 points ago

Actually it's the mirror lake, just outside of the mines of Moria

[–]DoesStuffWithThings 0 points1 point ago

That's what I was thinking too

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Yes. Yes it is.

[–]FusionStar 10 points11 points ago

Damn Canada, you so good lookin.

[–]redjimdit 4 points5 points ago

Why the HELL are you tagged as "Lying Donkey-Raping Shit-eater"?

I dont' even KNOW you.

[–]Hark_An_Adventure 5 points6 points ago

He steals the work that other people do.

[–]xecila 0 points1 point ago

This is why. He's made a habit of stealing photos and claiming that he took them.

[–]redjimdit 0 points1 point ago

..so the tag speaks the truth then.

[–]lumpofcole 51 points52 points ago

As an amateur photographer, I understand your sentiments... and yet I am going to point out that such an aversion to HDR is just some elitist bullshit. The method of acquiring such a stunning image is irrelevant. The end result is what is important.

This photo is amazing, both in content, and the technique used to present the content. Sure, it could have been an amazing photo with just one exposure, but the photographer here chose to do a tonemapped version because it looks better to them. You wouldn't be down on an artist because he chose water color instead of oil on canvas, why be down on a someone who has discovered that HDR lakes look apocalyptic?

HDR is a technique born of digital photography, film could never achieve this much dynamism. When Digital photography started to become mainstream, people had your attitude about it as well, thinking it was cheating to get a result, when really it's just an evolution of the process. In much the same way HDR is an evolution of digital photography. You still need to frame the scene, know how to manually set exposures and press the shutter button... it's still photography.

[–]theanzelm 19 points20 points ago

The problem is the way he and many others tonemap it: favoring local contrast (nice crisp details) instead of global contrast (now the image has no depth anymore, everything from foreground to background seems to be just one layer).

Then, he applied some post-fx like vignette and perhaps further colorgrading that make all the nice dynamic range useless, look at the forests - they're pitch black. Now I can live with that because that is artistic effect to achieve a certain mood, but the flatness resulting of boosting local contrast is just stupid.

I'm not even sure this is a HDR pic, could just be a regular pic with unsharp masking (overlaying with highpassed version of image) to achieve the HDR tonemapping look.

Just my $0.02

[–]aleppocone 25 points26 points ago

As an amateur photographer, aversion to HDR is not bullshit. The effect is designed to give a high dynamic range, not give everything this weird computer generated contrast with ugly halos and fake saturation. It's not elitism. Anyone with a camera could have gone there and took this photo. Still... go hide behind your cool hip technique and have fun doing it. There is a reason why you never see a photo like this in a professional magazine or portfolio.

[–]Ftumsh 19 points20 points ago

Thank you for saying this.

When I first discovered HDR two years ago I went crazy and was doing the same shit you're complaining about. Huge saturation, terrible halos, bla bla bla. I thought it was artistic, then I saw that every other fucker in the world was using it too.

I still use it occasionally but these days I tone it the fuck down. It gives a little je ne sais quoi to some particular photos where it's called for, but IMO should be used for nothing more than that. Example

[–]DharmaTurtleSC 0 points1 point ago

This is incredible. Nice original work!

[–]Ftumsh 0 points1 point ago

Grazie! That was taken in St Peter's basilica in Rome last week. Eventually I got kicked out for using the tripod I'd smuggled in.

[–]DharmaTurtleSC 0 points1 point ago

Hah! I guess a tripod would be useful in taking HDRs.

Do you have a site/flickr you want to advertise? :D

[–]GrumpySteen 12 points13 points ago

HDR is to photography as AutoTune is to music.

It could be used to good effect, but almost never is.

[–]shutyourgob 0 points1 point ago

HDR looks really un-natural to the human eye. Every time I see a photo using it I think 'wow, that photo looks too dark and too light....at the same time'. We instincively sense the direction of light in photos, if you cut out a small part of a scene using photoshop and flip it so the shadow goes in the wrong direction, people instantly notice it. That's why I hate HDR. If you have a scene that features a lot of shadow, you shouldn't be able to see every single detail in that shadow, and then every single detail in every light spot. The human eye isn't capable of doing that. When you look at beautiful paintings and appreciate the way artists study light and shade, it just seems depressing that people abandon natural beauty in favour of how far they can 'improve' an image digitally. They've just become completely disconnected from the idea of aesthetics. It really is the equivalent of auto-tune.

TL;DR: You're not a bad person if you like HDR, you're just wrong.

[–]spazmodic- 1 point2 points ago

A fellow redditor pasted me some photos using HDR, I believe I found where they were from. Here are some examples:

Honestly, looking at those photos makes my mind full of fuck. Like constantly between "this look like a painting" and "no, this is a photo"

[–]s54ada5sd 6 points7 points ago

Wow, those look like something from a game engine with obnoxious amounts of post processing and serious texture density issues.

[–]adrianmonk 0 points1 point ago

My mind reacted with "these look way too dark, just like every first person shooter video game ever".

[–]Erfeo 16 points17 points ago

You wouldn't be down on an artist because he chose water color instead of oil on canvas, why be down on a someone who has discovered that HDR lakes look apocalyptic?

No, but there is nothing wrong with disliking watercolours... or HDR. I don't like it too much either.

[–]bananamunchies 4 points5 points ago

I'm not a fan of the picture because of the processing - it's very dark. I think it would look a lot better as it was originally.

[–]arachnophilia 1 point2 points ago

The end result is what is important.

agreed. and... the end result here is actually kind of bad. the local contrast is too high, and there are strange tonal relationships that make the eye do funny things, and make the various planes in the image fight for dominance. for instance, the sky being so dark brings it to the fore-front, when really it should be at the back. keeping it light pushes it back and gives the image depth. don't believe me? crack the image open in photoshop, dodge it a bit, and see what happens.

it's not a critique based on the tools used, but on the aesthetic result of over-use and misuse of those tools.

film could never achieve this much dynamism.

sure it could. landscape photographers have been making extremely dynamic images for hundreds of years, using a variety of techniques including lowering overall dynamic range. this may surprise you, but that includes multiple exposures, as well: it's just a bit harder to line things up in the darkroom.

i myself used to use what's called "split contrast" printing, which is sort of like HDR from a single exposure. you expose the paper one with a deep magenta filter (brings out detail in the highlights) and a second time with a deep yellow filter (brings out detail in the shadows). where the two intersect, they make red, which the paper isn't sensitive to. you get images with great tonal ranges.

other common techniques include dodging and burning (ansel adams is the guy to look at here), and even capturing images using split or graduated ND filters, to darken skies. nothing is really new in the digital arena, except how easy the technology has made things for amateurs who don't know what they're looking at, and lack a sense of aesthetics.

[–]adrianmonk -1 points0 points ago

yet I am going to point out that such an aversion to HDR is just some elitist bullshit

It's not necessarily elitism. It's possible to just hate the way it looks without knowing anything about it.

That's how I felt when I first saw some photos like this on a real estate web site. I was like, "What did they do to those photos of that house to make everything look so strange and artificial?" Then when I found out what HDR was, I realized it has a purpose and requires skill. That gave me a lot more respect for the process, but it didn't increase my appreciation for the end result any.

[–]bovilexia 0 points1 point ago

I have no problem with HDR, as long as you don't produce pictures like the one linked and call yourself a photographer. I've seen people who use HDR correctly, but pictures like this have been so heavily post possessed it's hard to call it photography.

[–]MoarVespenegas -1 points0 points ago

You don't understand. HDR is a tool. It accomplishes a specific purpose. The human eye can see and quickly adapt to large tonal ranges. Cameras can't do that, they have one exposure. In a setting with very wide tonal ranges where you want to get detail out of both shadows and highlights it is an essential tool. For a landscape photograph during a partly clouded day it does nothing. It just ups the contrast everywhere and kills the sense of space, lighting, mood and everything else.
Just because you can does not mean you should.

[–]ethos101 0 points1 point ago

It's been over-processed, but that doesn't make it an HDR photo (or even an attempt, obviously).

[–]Bubba-J-Murray 0 points1 point ago

I don't think it is HDR, Looks like too much playing around with sharpness and Levels to me; Defiantly over processed though.

Oh my, we will soon have Anti Anti Anti HDR posts, I'd like to throw in though that HDR is a very useful tool, it is just constantly miss used. It's not meant to be used to give good lightning balance to your pictures and give them a more dramatic look - That's the photographers Job! But sometimes getting the perfect exposure isn't possible so shooting brackets and using HDR to correct a window in an interior shot or restoring detail to a light source (endless list of examples).

The way people are using it, I feel is cheating. It's to compensate for a bad exposure. My personal feels are if you can't do it in the Darkroom, don't do it in photoshop. But your picture is your picture and I'll always judge it on your terms.

[–]Vajician 14 points15 points ago

I wasn't expecting it to be so nice, I literally was like this. Just not as female or hot.

[–]iMeaux 2 points3 points ago

Wow nice. Girls with glasses do indeed rock. :)

[–]PR3CiSiON -1 points0 points ago

I don't know why you got -3 votes. I was seriously considering making 3 more accounts just to get you back up to 1 vote, but ya know... laziness..

[–]Vajician 1 point2 points ago

Whoa haha really, people do downvote for the oddest things don't they? I would not have expected my post could possibly offend anyone o.o

[–]automated_bot 1 point2 points ago

They downvote because skamper steals photos.

[–]PR3CiSiON 0 points1 point ago

I was talking about Vajician's comment. It was at -3 votes when I saw this thread. Did not know why four people thought his comment was offensive.

[–]Suecotero 2 points3 points ago

Something something skyrim mods.

[–]HydroCrank 1 point2 points ago

Quit throwing mounds of post-production on shots that could be really nice without them!

[–]ulrikft 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, that much HDR overkill leaves me breathless and in need of eye bleach too.

Mirror Lake, above Lake Louise in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. I've been there, and it's genuinely the most beautiful place I can imagine existing.

[–]ThatOneSymbiote 0 points1 point ago

Thank you kindly for replying! Gonna have to plan a trip up there. maybe build a cabin and just stay there with my 3 wolves that I adopted. I'd grow a beard capable of weathering my face from the elements and learn how to whittle a flute from a log. I'd be known as the Banff Baron. I'd rescue hikers from perilous situations and I'd take them back to my Cabin where I would let them sleep inside and I'd sleep in a tent outside so that they will feel safer since im just some random woodsman. And then I'd wake up really early, catch some fish, and serve up breakfast for them, and as a parting gift, whittled flutes from logs. I'll send you one via Bear Cub FallacyofCausation, as a token of my appreciation for taking the time out of your day to inform me where this location is.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Definitely not too crazy. Moraine lake is one of the default 'Canada' wallpapers that comes with windows 7.

[–]OhSnappitySnap 0 points1 point ago

That is true but what made it odd was I have my backgrounds rotate every three hours or so. Right time.

[–]scumbag-reddit 0 points1 point ago

As a canadian i knew the second i saw this pic it was from somewhere in canada. It's such a beautiful place nature wise. Well except for the oil sands....

Hopefully you got some butt secks before moving on.

Giants rose out of their caves in clash with the gods encountering the greatest battle ever seen. Now, heads, arms and legs of both giants and gods fell down upon the earth. And their shining blades. And men came, who took these shining blades, now man was master of the world.

Looks like there could be a horcrux in there.

Well since some people are saying that this is from interfacelift and therefore we can assume that OP didn't take the photo, I can feel less bad when I say that this looks like shit.

WAY too much post-processing for my tastes.

Personally, landscape photography is about showing the true beauty of nature and scenery. When someone goes and HDR's the fuck out of it like this, it just ruins it for me. I want to be impressed by the scene itself, not the processing done on it.

It's just as beautiful in person, so long as you can push through the crowds to actually see it. Blah.

How to farm karma:

Find picture on interfacelift. Host it on imgur and submit it to reddit.
