Anyone who has played golf and seen the impact mark on the face of the club after hitting the ball will tell you this is fake. A regulation golf ball doesn't flex anywhere near as much as this.

[–]Wonsu 61 points62 points ago

Here is the real thing at 150 mph.

[–]donteatthecheese 11 points12 points ago

Still looks cool

[–]NextDayAir 13 points14 points ago

still flexes more than you'd really expect it to...

[–]MeltBanana 0 points1 point ago

The materials vary greatly but they're essentially rubber balls. Golf would be an even harder sport if they didn't flex so much.

[–]Backwell -1 points0 points ago

Obviously it looks like the one posted here flexes more. We don't know what frame rate each impact was recorded at.

Couldn't the ball in OP's gif simply be flying faster?

[–]tatskaari 0 points1 point ago

They are both at 150mph According to the video descriptions. I think op's ball may have been a rubber practice ball. Golf balls do vary a lot though.

Maybe the 6th time this has been posted, got too many upvotes then gets systematically taken apart in the comments. See you in a month.

[–]KRAT0SXx 0 points1 point ago

This have been covered multiple times. This isn't a real golf ball.

[–]HarjiFangki 4 points5 points ago

I don't think golf ball is that soft.

[–]neostead2000 -2 points-1 points ago

How fast would said golf ball have to be moving in order for this to happen

[–]inmygrandnatty -1 points0 points ago

The speed of science :]

[–]Finnishalzheimerskid 11 points12 points ago

The speed of fake.

[–]neostead2000 -3 points-2 points ago

I would think so

[–]insaniaeternus -4 points-3 points ago

I need an explanation on this! Scientists, researchers, or just redditors with a lot of time, come to my aid!

[–]insaniaeternus -1 points0 points ago

Oh, well that seems less fun, but thank you anyway for making sure I wasn't led astray with false expectations of golfball jellyification!

Energy is being transferred and conserved in a very short period of time. This passage explains if a club hits the ball.

"The period of contact of the club head with the ball is about one two-thousandth of a second. During this time the center of mass of the ball has barely moved, but the ball is bent way out of shape. A significant portion of the kinetic energy has been converted into potential energy stored in the deformed ball. Essentially, the ball is like a compressed spring. See Figure 3. When the ball takes off from the tee, it returns to a spherical shape, releasing the spring, and most of this potential energy is converted back into kinetic energy."

Source

An attempt at the TL;DR: When energy is transferred and the center of mass has very little time to move, the object deforms.
