Vote for the all father. Bring back Norse religion!

[–]scubasteve23 36 points37 points ago

I would be a part of that religion.

[–]GeekyAine 18 points19 points ago

Ouch. That is a religion. Modern Polytheist here (pro-science, anti-creationism, all the good stuff like any sensible Redditor). There are those of us who try to study and honor what the Celtic/Norse/etc. religions might have evolved into if Christianity hadn't decided to throw a curb party all over other cultures and their traditions, and then pissed in the history books for good measure. (Yes, bitter)

Usual disclaimer: I try to follow "reconstructionist methodology." I only speak for my own beliefs, as all Polytheists, Pagans, Reconstructionists, etc. have their own definitions and practices.

But personally, I'd vote Thor.

[–]emkat 7 points8 points ago

Do you believe in the creation myths?

[–]GeekyAine 11 points12 points ago

No. I believe there are aspects or science that could not be explained then and refusing to incorporate science and religion promotes ignorance.

But I don't think we've explained everything, and I'm not sure we ever will. So I chose to base my beliefs on my own experiences of things that I couldn't explain and I choose to follow gods and practices that I respect.

In 3,000 years maybe we'll have explained gods (and yes, magic and mysticism) entirely through science and I will be a foolish fossil that school children mock as they walk by, but for now, it makes my life better, and makes me a better person than I was as either a Christian or an Atheist.

Sorry for the long winded, but hopefully not too formulaic reply. I get asked this a lot.

[–]Dambem -1 points0 points ago

Wow, i am the same as you, in my mostly atheist school, i am often questioned why i believe in god and the big bang, as if i cannot believe in one and the other.

[–]_Freedom_ 4 points5 points ago

As the younger edda states;

It was Time's morning,

When there nothing was;

Nor sand, nor sea

Nor cooling billows.

Earth there was not,

Nor heaven above.

The Ginungagap was,

But grass nowhere.

Then goes on to talk about how two different worlds, one of extreme heat, and one of extreme cold met, and created the first drops, and from these drops came the first life, the giant Ymir. And Ymir was eventually slain, and his blood formed the seas, his bones the rocks, and his skull was used to create the skies and the heavens.

I read this as fairly similar to the big bang theory, just written in a way that would be understood at the time.

It may be a stretch, but it's how I read into it.

Link to a free Ebook of a translation of the Younger Edda

[–]Freddie_AppsHero 2 points3 points ago

I have trouble with anything in the Younger Edda. Snorri twisted much of the tales to please or placate the Christian ruling class.

[–]xeivous -5 points-4 points ago

Pro-science, anti-creationism

All signs point to no.

[–]GeekyAine 3 points4 points ago

Eh, I'd rather be asked for a more detailed reply than have someone make assumptions about my beliefs. I don't mind explaining after a polite question, but I felt like adding too much needless detail in the original post would have sounded defensive, or worse, preachy.

[–]Freddie_AppsHero 3 points4 points ago

Odinn/Vali here. Do you ever find yourself getting a bit frustrated as Europeans worshipping Yahweh? I get Patrick Stewart in my head.

WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU WHITE PEOPLE

[Picard]

WORSHIPPING A JEWISH GOD?

[–]GeekyAine 1 point2 points ago

Hmmm. I'm really put off by that sort of logic because it gets used against Asatru/Norse/any type of Pagan really. Some people get mocked for their interest as white people in Native American gods, and some people claim that you have to be "really" Irish to study Celtic beliefs or "actually" Scandinavian to worship..... The list goes on and on and ends with Pagans getting unfairly painted as racists.

Saddest thing I heard in a long time was a friend saying he didn't dare look into his own lineage because he didn't want to destroy his whole worldview by having to abandon his religion (big red flag ಠ_ಠ). Do whatever and worship whomever you will, just don't be a dick to others who deserve the same.

Slope's too slippery. So, no thanks. I do think they've lost touch seriously with their history, even relatively recent history ("fundamentals"? Really??). But I never bring race into it.

[–]Freddie_AppsHero 2 points3 points ago

Well, look, I'm not being racist; anybody is entitled to worship any god. But to me, a white European, who goes around talking about how Christianity is his heritage, and his forefathers were proud Christians, to me, that's like a white guy who walks around trying to be gangster. It's just so wannabe. Get rid of that crucifix, get yourself a valknut, read up on the true gods of old north, and leave Semitic religion to the Semitic people.

Saddest thing I heard in a long time was a friend saying he didn't dare look into his own lineage because he didn't want to destroy his whole worldview by having to abandon his religion (big red flag ಠ_ಠ).

I don't get this. Did he feel that if he looked into his heritage, he'd find out he was Germanic or Celtic or something, and then feel obliged to change to his ancestors' religion?

[–]GeekyAine 0 points1 point ago

Heritage is just a hot issue sometimes. And I was still pretty riled up by th jackass ITT associating Odinism with Aryan Brotherhood's extremist racism.

I don't get this. Did he feel that if he looked into his heritage, he'd find out he was Germanic or Celtic or something, and then feel obliged to change to his ancestors' religion?

My friend had been told (or somehow convinced himself) that unless he was really, ancestrally, directly descended from some ancient Germanic tribe or Norse vikings that he couldn't follow any aspects of their culture and religion. Hence the ಠ_ಠ and red flags, because any group/book/etc that espouses that mentality isn't worth the time.

Edit: I hate being confrontational, but I'm taking back the apology. Even your clarification centers on race in a way that makes me uncomfortable.

[–]Freddie_AppsHero 0 points1 point ago

I never said anything about race. If you adopt a Chinese kid, and you raise him to be Norse, there's nothing wrong with that. You're really over thinking that.

[–]GeekyAine 2 points3 points ago

Well, look, I'm not being racist...

But to me, a white European, who goes around talking about how Christianity is his heritage...

that's like a white guy who walks around trying to be gangster...

read up on the true gods of old north,

and leave Semitic religion to the Semitic people.

Those are the parts that made me uncomfortable. Not trying to be argumentative, I'm just trying to explain in lieu of the passive aggressive silence and downvoting that often ends up happening in a misunderstanding like this.

[–]Thorveil 0 points1 point ago

You're forgetting that not all of Europe has exactly the same gods. Also, which god you wanted to follow the most was extrememly personal. Some for Wodin, some for Thunor, Frige, Freo, etc. You're also forgetting that a lot of Norse people around this age didn't really care about "swapping" religions. Certain Christian traders wouldn't trade with non-Christians so they said they were Christians.

[–]Freddie_AppsHero 0 points1 point ago

You're forgetting that not all of Europe has exactly the same gods.

I was being a bit lax with my phraseology. Obviously, people of the Slavic cultures should follow Slavic gods, etc.

[–]tidux 1 point2 points ago

As an American guy who's got WASP, Irish-Catholic, and Ashkenazi Jewish ancestors, I choose "none of the above."

[–]Dat_Karmavore 6 points7 points ago

Fuck yes.

[–]Unicumber_seacorn 5 points6 points ago

it still exists, actually. It's what I follow.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Unicumber_seacorn 5 points6 points ago

How so? Never heard of Asatru? Odinism? Norse Paganism? I personally follow Asatru. See r/Asatru

[–]GeekyAine 2 points3 points ago

/fistbump for you being ballsier than I.

I almost left an identical comment before seeing yours, but I was worried I'd draw atheist trolls to the Asatru subreddit (betterthanexpected.jpg?)... On the upside, now that I've outed myself as a non-atheist Redditor, I should probably work up the courage to say hi in there instead of just lurking.

[–]Unicumber_seacorn 1 point2 points ago

Honestly most of the atheists i know (more like anti-theists) can completely understand and respect what it's about. It was strange to them when i began getting into it, as I too was quite an anti-theist.

[–]GeekyAine 0 points1 point ago

True. I've found as I bring up aspects of concrete things like history and research (which I consider important to my practices, to a fault really) my atheist friends take me a lot more seriously. I leave the more abstract or personal aspects to discussions with the more theist-friendly crowd because they have a frame of reference (and he shared discours community) to make sense of it.

Just a bit gunshy after a bit of specifically anti-Pagan hate that I've had to deal with.

[–]Thor4269 2 points3 points ago

I'm Thor and I approve this message.

[–]GentlemenQuinn 0 points1 point ago

Norse religion is still relatively popular in Iceland, from what I heard in a short documentary. However, it's not interpreted as literally as it once was.

[–]cgowsell 0 points1 point ago

I did not know this. Do you remember documentary name?

[–]GentlemenQuinn 0 points1 point ago

It was a parkour documentary based in Iceland that I found on Youtube. I don't remember the name though, sorry.

[–]coolerderek 1 point2 points ago

teach the controversy!

[–]im_too_literal 0 points1 point ago

As a person of Scandinavian descent with the name of a Norse "religious figure" (for lack of a better term), I second this.

[–]Freddie_AppsHero -1 points0 points ago

Odin or Thor? There aren't many other gods' names that have any popularity.

[–]elint 0 points1 point ago

Fenrir, Frigga, Heimdall, Loki, Tyr? I'm familiar with quite a bit more, but those are a few that should be recognized by most people who studied a tiny bit of mythology. Hell, a couple of them are familiar if you have watched some of the recent Marvel Comics movies (Thor, The Avengers, etc).

[–]Freddie_AppsHero -1 points0 points ago

I meant among people who might name their child after a Norse god (and not a Marvel character).

Now that I re-read his post, I'd bet his last name is Torsson.

[–]billgtes 0 points1 point ago

Never heard anyone with the last name "torsson" I'm swedish, dunno bout Norway though.

Freja/Tor are the most prominent god-names( as in first names) here I believe.

[–]Freddie_AppsHero 0 points1 point ago

Fair enough. Surprised about Freyja.

[–]billgtes 0 points1 point ago

I think she was one of the greater female gods, like an "earth mother" type. not sure though

I also forgot "frej", the male version.

[–]im_too_literal 0 points1 point ago

I'm a girl. But I have a second cousin named Thor.

[–]QuantumTycoon 26 points27 points ago

They say Odin spent seven days nailed to an ash tree to learn the secrets of the world. I think it's just so he could say he was well hung.

[–]Accelerator 1 point2 points ago

Not nailed, hanged. Odin was the gallows god. A god of death. He hung from Yggdrasil, the world tree. He was however stabbed with his own spear, which is probably influenced by Christian mythology.

[–]iamthemindfreak 1 point2 points ago

Nah man, it's obvious that the All Father influenced the myth of the Son of God to include the spear

[–]Grymnir 0 points1 point ago

9 days he hung.

Ygg is also another of Odins names. Ygg drasil means Odins horse in a literal translation.

[–]starlinguk 0 points1 point ago

It's probably the other way around.

[–]Accelerator 1 point2 points ago

It depends upon how old you want to believe the Odin cult is and how much fate you put in the purity of the legends.

We only have two semi-reliable sources (if I recall correctly, Snorre and some other guy) who are simply retelling older stories and only giving us fragments of a bigger picture. At the time these guys were recording the stories Scandinvia and the rest of the area was in the midst of a religious revolution. Myths and legends merge as people borrow and steal from various ideas. You also have to take into account the authors own beliefs.

I find it much more likely that the idea of a spear being poked into Odin was borrowed from these new Christian stories than Norse mythology somehow influencing Christian mythology in the first century.

Of course, there is the known similarities between indian/asian mythologies and both the Northern and southern european mythologies, so maybe the spear is an even older invention. I know that some scholars suspect that the stories of Odin and the Asgardians, along with their war against the Vans, are linked with an invasion or migration of peoples coming from the east that probably brought along with them plenty of Asian legends.

[–]CheezNBaconMan 0 points1 point ago

Fun Fact: Snorre means Penis in swedish. (Any swede can confirm this)

[–]starlinguk 0 points1 point ago

Christianity hardly has an original thought in it. It's a mish-mash of many religions and stories. I'm assuming this is the case because whenever someone went somewhere to convert the population they would borrow from local myths and legends to make it more palatable.

[–]alfabetsoop 14 points15 points ago

Praise be Odin. Those ice giants really butcher the sanctity of what it means to be a normal giant.

[–]AnonTheTerrible 11 points12 points ago

As a giant, I can confirm this.

[–]KrokodileJaws 2 points3 points ago

As much as I tried, I couldn't get my family converted to Norse religion. I thought for sure they'd go for it.

[–]AWW_YES_I_LOVE_ANAL 2 points3 points ago

It was Thor who promised the end of Ice Giants, not Odin, Thor is always the one in Norse mythology slaying Ice Giants, he even slayed some while wearing an old norse version of a wedding dress.

[–]KungFuJimmy 2 points3 points ago

Thank you, I had to search the comments before saying "THOR! IT WAS THOR WHO KILLED ICE GIANTS, NOT ODIN!" You've successfully lowered my blood pressure, and for that you have my thanks.

[–]Accelerator 2 points3 points ago

Strictly speaking I don't think Ice giants have ever appeared in the stories about Thor. He hunts giants and trolls but that is mostly in "Udgård" which is the lands east of Midgaard. They'd be classified as Mountain giants. Neither the giants from Niffleheim (ice) nor the giants from Muspelheim (fire) actually appear in the popular myths.

[–]GeekyAine 1 point2 points ago

Aww yes, I love that story!

Hello everyone. I am, among other things, an Asatruar. Feel free to look that up quick, come back here, and ask me any questions you might have.

[–]Lodurr8 0 points1 point ago

Any Loki worship in Asatru?

[–]Freddie_AppsHero 0 points1 point ago

Depends on who you're asking. A lot of Norse pagans avoid him.

[–]Thorveil 0 points1 point ago

A lot chose to ignore him as a good, however, it's my belief that whatever he fucked up.. He nearly always make everything better again. Sometimes better than they were before.

[–]Rohasfin 0 points1 point ago

Yes, there's some. It's rarely what people tend to think of at first. This doesn't stop people, even other Asatruar, from shying away from Loki's devotees.

[–]Lodurr8 0 points1 point ago

Creativity and innovation rule the modern world. In light of that, I could see Loki worship being more relevant.

[–]Rohasfin 0 points1 point ago

What Loki followers I've met have made that argument, and while I agree with them... the stigma they carry is a hard one to shake.

[–]BossDulciJo 2 points3 points ago

Weren't all the gods and giants killed in Ragnarok except for Lif and Lífþrasir? Which would mean that Odin and Thor are dead. Though I THINK Hodir is alive still after he went to the underworld to bring back Baldr after accidentally killing him. Though I'm not sure about that second part.

Wednesday (English) = Woden's Day

Mercredi (French) = Mercury's Day

[–]themooseiscool 0 points1 point ago

Well, that certainly explains something in the book. Sorry if this was a minor spoiler.

[–]archiesteel 0 points1 point ago

No problem, I read the book a couple of years ago (and enjoyed it), but I wasn't thinking about it when I made the comment. :-)

[–]Grymnir 0 points1 point ago

Its because the Germanic people were never conquered by Rome, whereas the Gallic(french) were.

[–]archiesteel 0 points1 point ago

Some of the Germanic people were, though, and Britain certainly was...

In fact, I heard the Germanic gods used were selected as "Roman equivalents", though this equivalence seemed to have been more about the god's "sphere of influence" rather than his hierarchical position. Thus, Thor (God of Thunder) was associated to Jupiter, even though Odin/Woden was the ruler of the Norse/Germanic gods.

Also, it all breaks down at "Saturday", which is in honor of Saturn (i.e. Kronos, leader of the Titans and father of Jupiter/Zeus).

Learning about the origin of common everyday words is always fascinating...

[–]bibbleskit 0 points1 point ago

Dont think Odin ever promised that...

[–]MrMojosDojo 0 points1 point ago

Where is Odin? :P

[–]memo83 0 points1 point ago

I had to read this 3 times to understand that you were talking about political wings, not the wings on his helmet!

[–]Grymnir 1 point2 points ago

As an old time heathen, I find these things more annoying than anything.

The Old Gods are many, not singular. Many pagans/heathens have a favorite God or two, but all are recognized.

Polytheistic traditions the world over had/have a habit of adopting new Gods into their midst. In particular, the Aesir and the Vanir are both separate groups of Gods the Norse fused into a singular tradition dating back thousands of years.

Today you only get the bad press of irish monks and repentant apologists. Or even worse, the unabashed racists who claim some heritage and kinship with those I honor.

The blight of monotheism infects even peoples random humor. Its sad more than funny.

In some ways I find it good that at least the memory of what was once troth can still be seen out in this world without too much fear of being killed for it.

Who was the guy that said they'd abolish punctuation? Seems like he's pretty trustworthy.

[–]dstrichit 0 points1 point ago

So long as it's not Orden. Those boxes scare me.

[–]IAmSoSmart-S-M-R-T 0 points1 point ago

Probably because I've been watching them again recently, but I expected an Archer reference.

Is that how you feel dumb when you click on a link Barry? Yes it is, other Barry. Yes it is.

[–]ZiggyZombie 0 points1 point ago

Odin got rid of the Ice Giants, so he was no longer needed. As long as poverty and bureaucracy are around there will always be a right and left wing.

[–]iwilldotheopposite 1 point2 points ago

Don't mock Odinists! We build churches and hospitals in Africa.

[–]kravedarknesss 0 points1 point ago

The all father doesn't need your votes! Odin will ride, Loki's 8 legged horse child, into the office and take command by force!

[–]micfury11 0 points1 point ago

This is probably the stupidest post i've ever seen in my life. There were giant alien monster things in ancient times but I pwned them with my sword. WHERE'S MY RELIGION NOW, SHEEP?

[–]Seymor569 -1 points0 points ago

Oh god r/Atheism and r/Politics are leaking.

Oh jebus rice, something mildly related to other subreddits is showing up in r/funny, what a fucking catastrophe

[–]vivvav -2 points-1 points ago

You act like this is new.

[–]Professor_Oedipus -3 points-2 points ago

What does this have to do with atheism? Aside from referencing an old religion.

[–]Grymnir 0 points1 point ago

Tradition not religion. The concept of 'religion' was/is as alien to the norse as it is/was to the native americans. The blending of roman paganism with jewish mysticism(christianty) is religion.

[–]gonesnake 1 point2 points ago

I'm vodin' fer Odin

I believe the term is "Frost Giants."

[–]ripgukids -1 points0 points ago

Im about a third of the way through American Gods, not too sure if I trust Odin.

[–]bvrmgnt -2 points-1 points ago

This isn't even creative or original. You, or whoever, just ripped off the very clever original Odin Vs. Jesus macro and made it political.

Whoever made this should be ashamed of their lack of creativity.

[–]Fapotheosis -2 points-1 points ago

I just got out of prison. Odinism is still a big thing in there. With the Aryans. I actually went to their Yule Feast last year.

[–]Voidkom -1 points0 points ago

The left-wing said they'd abolish poverty.

What do you mean "they'd" ? I believe you mean "they'll".

[–]ThomasRoll -2 points-1 points ago
