But... but... but... Hitler, Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot.
Don't the verses in the Doctrine of Atheism, which were obviously followed by all these atheist dictators, command you to persecute and kill all religious people?
[–]JehovahsHitlist 11 points12 points13 points 1 month ago
Dude, just because Scienciticus 14:4 says "thou shalt create murderous regimes because thou art a dickhole" doesn't mean we have to. You're taking the whole thing out of context.

yeah, it's a metaphor!

Hitler was catholic right? Think I read a quote saying he believed he was doing Gods work.
[–]lllator 7 points8 points9 points 1 month ago
From Chapter 2 of Mein Kampf: "And so I believe to-day that my conduct is in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator. In standing guard against the Jew I am defending the handiwork of the Lord."
[–]Lenten1 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago
This is the quote I was talking about, thanks.
[–]squigs 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago
Hard to say. He claims to be in Mein Kampf but relying on Nazi propaganda for accurate information probably isn't a good idea.
[–]WalrusTits 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago
Well we can't read minds yet so generally we just take a person's word for it when they say they believe in god.
But we have no knowledge whether or not this person believes in god, therefore we can neither state that he is a catholic nor an atheist.
Sometimes the only valid answer is "we don't know".
We don't know if any person believes in god, you only know what you believe.
Isn't that what I just said?
It wasn't clear, since you only said "we have no knowledge whether or not this person believes in god".
I had a feeling that you meant we don't know anyone's actual beliefs but I wasn't 100% sure so I didn't make any negative assertions about what your intent was I just posted the statement as is.
[–]DorkLord54 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago
While in the public eye he gave off an image of being very Christian, in private he believed Christianity to be weak, but was smart enough to use it to pander to the ignorant masses.

Downvote for stolen comic.
Here's a link to the original: http://mattbors.com/archives/321.html
Please give webtraffic to creators, not image hosting sites. Credit where credit is due.
[–]AxlJones[S] 22 points23 points24 points 1 month ago*
You can see the source of the comic on the right side of it and I uploaded it on imgur so people can see the img just by clicking on a button with RES.
Also, please get off your high horse.
[–]Loki5654 -31 points-30 points-29 points 1 month ago
"High Horse"?
Look at the thief trying to claim the moral high ground! How cute.
It doesn't matter how much of the original comic you included. You took webtraffic that could have gone to the comic creator (you know, the stuff that drives their revenue stream and earns them money?) and gave it to an image hosting site.
Did you learn nothing from the Oatmeal/FunnyJunk debacle?
[–]Coffee2theorems 12 points13 points14 points 1 month ago
Look at the thief trying to claim the moral high ground!
Now that's hyperbole. Even if it's copyright infringement (and I agree that you should politely link to the original), it's certainly not theft, as the author didn't lose anything they had.
You took webtraffic that could have gone to the comic creator gave it to an image hosting site.
Linking a copy of a comic on reddit probably does not decrease web traffic to the comic creator. If anything, it probably increases traffic, as there's a good chance that some of the many people who haven't been there may take a closer look. It's advertisement, just not as effective advertisement as linking to the original.
Suboptimal unpaid advertisement is not theft.
[–]ffxpwns 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago
I respect your point, but I don't buy it. I would argue that linking to the site itself would vastly increase traffic over rehosting it. I don't care if I can't use RES on a link, but since I didn't go to their site when I clicked it, I never bothered to actually visit their site because I'm lazy. I'm also damn tired, so if that didn't make sense, let me know.
[–]AxlJones[S] 9 points10 points11 points 1 month ago*
First of all, how can you call me a thief when there's still the credits included in the picture? I never claimed this picture to be mine, i just saw it a few months ago on some other website and thought r/atheism would find it funny and interesting
Second of all, i never took the web-traffic away from the website as it never existed in the first place. (don't even try to get me started on the fact that some people use the same argument when pirating movies or music as the author has the picture up on his website for public viewing).
PS: I think the author would much rather have some free publicity than nothing.
Do you see where I'm getting at or does everything in your world have to be so square and segmented?
[–]Loki5654 -30 points-29 points-28 points 1 month ago
First of all, how can you call me a thief when there's still the credits included in the picture?
You took something that did not belong to you without the owner's permission. That is theft. A person who commits a theft is called a thief. You committed a theft, I call you a thief.
QED.
i never took the web-traffic away from the website as it never existed in the first place.
The website does exist. I linked it above. It took me less that 2 minutes to find it. You didn't even bother to try.
You are taking any click on this reddit post away from the creator and giving it to imgur. Imgur is now making money off of the creator's work. You have taken money away from the creator.
I think the author would much rather have some free publicity than nothingness.
Pointless rationalization for your thievery. Instead of assuming you know what the creator wants, why not err on the side of legality and give them full credit for their work by linking to it?
Do you get where I'm getting at
I get your pointless rationalization, yes.
or does everything in your world have to be so square and segmented?
Oh dear, the thief is trying to insult me again. However shall I live with myself?
[–]AxlJones[S] 7 points8 points9 points 1 month ago
In common usage, theft is the taking of another person's property without that person's permission or consent with the intent to deprive the rightful owner of it.
I actually meant that the traffic never existed in the first place, not the website.
You are taking any click on this reddit post away from the creator and giving it to imgur. Imgur is now making money off of the creator's work. You have taken money away from the creator. How is that logical? The author doesn't lose anything from my post. If i linked it directly to his website, he would have gained a visitor. You are right. However, the visitor would probably never have ended up on his website anyway. Oh dear, the thief is trying to insult me again. However shall I live with myself?

Being accused of being a thief by a condescending pedant who names himself after a God/Superhuman Being just feels the same.
[–]First_thing -9 points-8 points-7 points 1 month ago
So the revenue imgur earned from your link didn't affect the author? Hmm... Sure, you didn't take any money from him, but you did deny the author money anyways, you can not deny this.
You created the traffic to imgur instead of the author's page, obviously there has been traffic, take a moment to think about this once more. Give credit where credit is due. If you truly liked the image and didn't just think about your karma, you would have taken the extra minute to go to the site mentioned on the image, copied the link from there and linked it here. You're just a lazy person who doesn't think things through, like the majority of the internet.

Reddit: one of the best places on the Internet to have arguments and belittle others even when no one cares...

The internet: where all your hard work goes uncredited and gives bigger companies more money.
Why? Because "no one cares..."

Reddit: where the usually creative comment section is ruined by people arguing, instead of commenting on the image.

The cognitive bias of believing in Religion is to say "Those people didn't REALLY believe in God"
[–]Bishopkilljoy 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago
For those confused about the last one Nietzsche was a philosopher who said that due to the innovations of man and the development of knowledge that "god is dead" needless to say he wasn't very popular with the church
[–]selfcallednowhere 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago
This is /r/atheism. You really don't need to explain who Nietzsche is.
[–]Bishopkilljoy -2 points-1 points0 points 1 month ago
you'd be surprised not everybody knows every philosopher in the world

What about North Korea and USSR? i know this has been said many times before but can we just agree that no matter the system, the worst people will always abuse it?
You can make a case for North Korea being a theocracy, i.e. worshiping the ruler and his dad and granddad. Just sayin'.
