We do have something special: a uniquely high degree of symbolic thinking and language. It's truly a leap beyond anything else on the planet.

My dog is smarter than my entire family. He lays around the house all day, and he is still the one that gets the free meal.

[–]needlestack 1 point2 points ago

That's why I didn't say anything about intelligence.

Opposable thumbs, bitchez!

Monkeys have those too. We are not so special anymore.

[–]VerneAsimov 2 points3 points ago

Fine. We've been to the moon and Mars. We've seen stuff of which monkeys couldn't even dream. We can travel at several times faster than sound. We can communicate over thousands of miles within seconds. So on so forth. Our only specialty is our brain.

[–]destroyapathy 1 point2 points ago

Monkeys have been to space too. In fact they made it there before humans. I'd link a source but I'm on my phone. Just google "first monkey in space." Spoiler: tragic ending.

[–]VerneAsimov 2 points3 points ago

Oh, forgot about that. Sorry.

Still, I highly doubt monkeys are excited about the landing on Mars tomorrow, or that they could engineer the means to do so, or that they could invent vaccinations, or develop theories about stuff, and so on.

We humans do have something special. You're a human, so we have you, and you are something special.

I'd mention something about him being a minister or something, but hell it's Mr. Rogers.

[–]thetheist 1 point2 points ago

Everybody loves Mr. Rogers. There was a time a couple of years ago that I had decided Mr. Rogers's message was bad. Basically, if people are happy with who they are, then why would they want to become better people? Well, after careful restrospection, I've decided that my opinion was horse shit.

Mr. Rogers was a natural treasure, and I bet he helped tons of kids grow up right. There isn't one thing I'd want to change about him. He was special.

Even if all you got from Mr. Rogers was that you wanted to have him for a neighbor, he's already made you a better person.

Who are MFW people?

[–]Vextra 0 points1 point ago

I wonder how ol' Idi would react to being a reactionface gif on an atheist website, given that he was a christian...

[–]klaymankombat 0 points1 point ago

If by special they mean better, then no, not really. We are quite different than any other animal though.

[–]spitz 0 points1 point ago

The saddest thing about that kind of statement is that it often means the person is going out of their way to ignore what humans actually have to praise something that doesn't exist.

Humans are amazing, because we're filled with amazomiam!

It's as if they don't realize there are hundreds of billions stars and galaxies out there but somehow Earth is #1.

[–]mopecore 1 point2 points ago

Regardless of the immense size of the universe, I think the ability to think critically and in the abstract is pretty special. Even if one accepts the likelihood that there are other creatures with this ability elsewhere in the universe, it's still special. Something doesn't have to be unique to be special. I love my wife, and that love is special, even of it is pedestrian.

In the eyes of the universe, we are nothing. Thankfully, the universe has no eyes.

It's as if they somehow forget that we're probably the most destructive form of life to have ever lived.

[–]BlessedHeretic 1 point2 points ago

I highly doubt we are, but we are heavily effective at destroying things. I'm confident somewhere out in space there may be a creature of some sort that devours entire planets.

However in relation to earth, yes we are by far the most advanced killing machines.

[–]biscobuddha 0 points1 point ago

black holes?

[–]myerscc 0 points1 point ago

Advanced, yes; but not the most effective, at least not yet.

[–]AdmiralNelson24 0 points1 point ago

I suppose I should've added, "that we know of," to the end of it.
