Nobel Prize in Physics. 2012. This fucking guy. Who's with me? (imgur.com)

The Nobel Prize in physics is awarded to physicists who have made significant advances in research to the field, usually in radical or theoretical fields of physics.
Tyson's career however is focused almost entirely on distribution of astrophysics information to the media. His jobs as director of a planetarium and a research associate at a museum make it highly unlikely that he is participating in the kind of research that is awarded a Nobel prize.

You seem not to understand what the Nobel Prize is for.
[–]PigNarwhalHybrid 5 points6 points7 points 28 days ago
He didnt discover anything this year that is worth it and the nobel prizes are about discovery (not the peace prize that might as well be drawing straws) and while he is a great scientist i would give it to the guys that discovered the Higgs Boson Particle
[–]NukeThePope 8 points9 points10 points 28 days ago
Definitely not. That's not what the NP in Physics is about.
[–]Dudesan 5 points6 points7 points 28 days ago
He's an amazing educator. If there was a Nobel Prize for Education, I'd vote for him.
But there isn't. And he hasn't earned a Nobel Prize in physics.

Didn't this guy build his own time machine prototype?

Dr. Tyson is a brilliant physicist who uses his knowledge to educate people, this would be a good chance for the Nobel Prize to go to someone who can relate to common people.
[–]Dudesan 2 points3 points4 points 28 days ago*
Nobel Prizes in science* are for paradigm-changing discoveries at the frontiers of that field, not for educating plebeians about the basics. What paradigm changing discoveries has Dr. Tyson made recently?
I'm not saying that educating plebeians is not important- it is incredibly important- but that's not what the prize is for.
If there was a prize for science educators (I'd name it after Sagan or Feynman, if the choice were up to me), I'd happily hand the first one to him.

The fact that he can relate to common people is one of the main reasons he shouldn't win it, I want some aloof astro-wizard with worse social skills than myself who actually contributes to the upper echelons of the science community to be rewarded.

Do you have a pinup of NDT on your wall?
[–]wiwibird 0 points1 point2 points 28 days ago
You really think america is ready for a black president AND black np in physics at the same time ?
[–]DannyKII 0 points1 point2 points 28 days ago
I wonder why you put that in atheism... Isn't there something like /physics? And as anyone else said, he is an amazing educator, but that's not what a Nobel Prize is for.
[–]sci-dreamer 0 points1 point2 points 28 days ago
I love him in The History Channel's, The Universe! He explains things so well that anyone can understand astrophysics when he explains it.
[–]goggimoggi 0 points1 point2 points 27 days ago
I like this guy, but Lawrence Krauss deserves it this year in my opinion.
[–]Tangent_M 0 points1 point2 points 27 days ago
If they had a Nobel prize for science evangelism he'd probably win it for sure.
[–]DavidARay 2 points3 points4 points 28 days ago
Did President Obama do anything to earn a Nobel prize? ಠ_ಠ

Motherfuckin' up voted.
[–]liberianatheist[S] -8 points-7 points-6 points 28 days ago
I know some people will say he hasn't made any huge accomplishments but he spreads science and free thought to the masses, which is just as important. I'd really like to start a campaign to make this happen, any ideas how to do that?
