Does anyone know the source of this image?

[–]maschnitz 19 points20 points ago

Not sure, but I know it's synthetic. Real full-frame global shots of Mars have a faintly visible, hazy atmosphere, often with visible clouds or dust storms. This is too crisp.

(For comparison, see this one from Hubble: http://planetary.s3.amazonaws.com/image/2003-22-a-full_jpg_med.jpg

and this one from the Rosetta spacecraft: http://planetary.s3.amazonaws.com/assets/images/4-mars/other/mars_globe_rosetta_N20070224T182903840ID30F71_rgb_colormixed_full.jpg

Both via the Planetary Society.)

It's real, but the colours have been enhanced and certain sections re-created in Photoshop. See Psylocke's comment just below yours.

[–]maschnitz 5 points6 points ago

I never said it was fake. I said it was synthetic. It's a mosaic.

[–]Saganomics 2 points3 points ago

My bad, I misinterpreted the "real" you used later on in your comment.

Go ask the guy that posted it in r/pics... That's where I stole it from. Up vote him while you are there

[–]JucheRevolution 2 points3 points ago

Yep, use the NASA site or ustream

[–]supson6437 1 point2 points ago

i mean like with on board camera feed and shit, do they have that??/ thatd be sick as fuck

[–]JucheRevolution 1 point2 points ago

On delay, yes. It's going to be broadcast in Times Square live !

[–]supson6437 0 points1 point ago

by on delay you mean the ~5 minute delay for the signal to reach earth or that they will edit stuff and it will be like 1 hour delay? also, what will the camera capture? is there a cam filming the atmospheric entry?? thatd be SICK

[–]JucheRevolution 0 points1 point ago

They'll be going back and forth between the actual cameras and other stuff. You will see the feed at some point

[–]singer_table 0 points1 point ago

Is it 5 minutes? I heard as much as 16 minutes.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm calculation times. With extreme rounding, mind you.

At closest, Mars is 54,600,000 km away. Light travels at about 17,987,547.5 km/m. Thats about 3 minutes. And its a bit farther away. I would say 10 minutes, factoring in computer rendering time.

If you have an Xbox you can also stream it live. Click here to see where you can stream it live. I CAN'T FUCKING WAIT.

snake yes

[–]check85 0 points1 point ago

Curiosity is now closer to Mars than the distance between the Earth and the moon. :)

[–]Gdigger13 1 point2 points ago

Looks like the mouth of me gusta...

[–]BoldManoeuvres -3 points-2 points ago

I hate memes, and I apologise sincerely...but Mars is seriously Me Gusta-ing here. Otherwise awesome pic even if it's not real. Excited!
