Ugg, even the elephants got a better work out routine than me. ....AND SHE GETS TO SEE A SEA LION!

[–]Ed-alicious 18 points19 points ago

Dude, just go to the zoo. You may or may not have plans for tomorrow or Saturday but it doesn't matter, you're going to go to the zoo. Organize a day with your friends or just take a day on your own to ponder things while looking at animals, it doesn't matter, because this weekend you are going to the zoo. This weekend, get out there and see something that isn't through a screen! You never know, you might just get something you can put up on reddit...

[–]Hi_Keith_Its_me_Stew 9 points10 points ago

but... but.... alone? I'm scared/embarrassed to do things alone....

[–]Ed-alicious 10 points11 points ago

You won't be alone, there'll be hundreds of people there! But seriously, do it! Go to the zoo, look at the animals, have a chat with an ape or an elephant. Or even just note the glint of intelligence in their eye. Or watch the monkeys and dolphins having a laugh. You've wanted to go for ages, so just go!! Carpe diem and all that.

[–]Hi_Keith_Its_me_Stew 7 points8 points ago

Fine, ill friggen go... Jeez mom!!!

[–]derpina_is_a_mermaid 584 points585 points ago

Can't....handle...cuteness....head...exploding. That elephant looks so damn happy!

[–]vagabond14 68 points69 points ago

That is my zoo's elephant! Her name is Chendra and she hails from the island of Borneo. She is a smaller island breed of elephant and very gentle, so in the early morning her keepers will often take her out on walks around the zoo! I've had the chance to meet Chendra a few times and nothing like a pat on the head from a gentle giant's trunk to guarantee you a smile and a good day! As for the sea lion Gus, short for Augustus, he is an impressive fellow himself! Over twenty years old, blind in one eye, and he's just keeps swimming :)

[–]pru_man 2 points3 points ago

Thanks for the backstory. Also, what kind of habitat does a zoo put a vagabond in?

[–]vagabond14 3 points4 points ago

One where she has plenty of room to roam :)

[–]Dakaraim 284 points285 points ago

yeah his expression is unbelievable, such childlike wonder and happiness

[–]beautyofgrace 169 points170 points ago

I love the elephant's expression. Makes my heart so happy...I'm not an elephant expert, but he looks thrilled to be visiting a sea lion.

[–]NotSoFastElGuapo 82 points83 points ago

Yeah, but when animals appear to be smiling, are they actually? Certainly not in some cases. Elephant expert please (serious question) - does this elephant appear to be happy, freaked out, defensive?

[–]rudezaeg 92 points93 points ago

Elephant Expert Quoter here:

Elephants also display many of the attributes of humans as well as some of the failings. They share with us a strong sense of family and death and they feel many of the same emotions.....They help one another in adversity, miss an absent loved one, and when you know them really well, you can see that they even smile when having fun and are happy. Source

[–]zenmunster 50 points51 points ago

Not an elephant expert but I had an awesome encounter with a baby elephant once. So we were driving in an open 4x4 through an animal sanctuary and we see lots of elephants and monkeys and what not, all over the place. So at one spot we see a small elephant up against a tree rubbing his tusks (I guess it's similar to what cats do with their claws). So we stop to get a few pictures of the cute little bugger and he sees us and gets all shy (or maybe scared) and tries to hide behind a tree. The only problem is the tree is a little thicker than a bamboo and he's a frickin' elephant. It was so adorable and funny.......I had pictures of the entire event but they're not with me anymore. It looked something like this though.

[–]JOJOFACE 2 points3 points ago

:3

[–]Dr_fish 4 points5 points ago

I don't think he's asking if they are capable of feeling emotions similar to humans, just that when they exhibit facial contortions that are similar to what a human produces when they smile, it may not mean that the animal is feeling the same emotion that a human does when they make the same expression on their face.

[–]KHTDR 4 points5 points ago

[–]joemarzen 19 points20 points ago

It's certainly intently focused, interested, in the sea lion. It doesn't appear frightened, so I don't think it's too much to say that the elephant would prefer to have this novel experience rather than not have it. That's at the very least, scientists get weird about animal emotions because it's difficult to judge their motivations by observing their body language and actions. That doesn't mean they don't have complex emotions. I think this elephants ears, eyes and the fact it's trying to touch the sea lion are a good indication, among other things, that it's trying absorb as much sensory information as possible. I am interested in the fact that its mouth is open, I don't believe elephants express emotion via facial expressions, but, it may be that the experience of seeing the sea lion was so surprising that it caused it to relax its jaw, a jaw dropping experience.

There are people who think that animals are automatons whose every action is driven only by survival instincts, those people are stupid and/or probably have a vested interest in not feeling empathy for them. For one thing, nearly, or possibly literally, everything humans do could/is driven by the same forces. The only difference, as far as we know, is that we have language, which allows us to express our feeling about reflecting upon our thoughts. Some animals may do the same thing, they just can't tell us.

TLDR: A problem with scientific rigor is that there are some things that we don't know how to test, some scientists interpret that to mean that if they don't know how to test something, then it doesn't exist. Those people are called bad scientists.

[–]RedAero 18 points19 points ago

I don't know about elephants, but IIRC some apes smile/grin when they are being threatening. They're showing you their teeth.

[–]GCS_3 24 points25 points ago

In an askscience thread about smiling, an expert clarified that teeth apart lips pulled back was a sign of aggression while teeth together and lips relaxed was a sign of submission.

[–]STOP_BEING_RETARDED 48 points49 points ago

I'm no animal expert but I just wish people would stop judging animal emotions based on their facial expression because it slightly resembles a human facial expression. They're not necessarily feeling happy just because their face looks like a human smile. I believe that elephants can feel happiness, even if they express it in a different way to a human's smile.

Edit: Basically, I'm giving my opinion that I don't like anthropomorphism and I'm being downvoted. Yawn.

2nd Edit: AntarcticFox explained what I was trying to say perfectly. You should go there if you are having trouble grasping what it is I'm trying to say.

[–]AntarcticFox 28 points29 points ago

I think it's quite sad that you're being downvoted for a having a valid point, but I think it's just because people are misreading/misunderstanding the post.

Elephants may very well be capable of feeling happiness and other complex emotions, however, just because they can feel the same emotions as humans does not mean that they express emotions in the same way that humans do.

In other words, elephant smile does not necessarily mean the same thing as a human smile; elephants may express happiness in some other way. I wouldn't know for sure, though, like everyone else here I'm no elephant expert.

[–]STOP_BEING_RETARDED 6 points7 points ago

Yes! This is exactly what I was/am trying to say, yet people aren't grasping it somehow, which baffles me incredibly. Thanks.

[–]AntarcticFox 7 points8 points ago

I believe people are reading "just because the elephant is smiling does not mean that it is happy" and are interpreting it as "elephants cannot feel happiness" and then they get angry. I think it helps to clarify that you do believe that elephants can feel happiness even if they express it in a different way.

[–]STOP_BEING_RETARDED 2 points3 points ago

Again, you're right. I'll add that too!

[–]derpina_is_a_mermaid 14 points15 points ago

I am upvoting this whole discussion. STOP_BEING_RETARDED--thank you for starting a debate about this issue. Really.

We have no option. It's the only referent we have. It's in our nature: we are the measure of the world, not because we should be, but because it's the only we can measure the world by.

[–]SteelMagnolias 34 points35 points ago

This is a fallacy on all levels.

[–]STOP_BEING_RETARDED 16 points17 points ago

Sure, but just because an animal did something that, for example, looks like a smile, it doesn't mean that they're happy.

[–]HipsterSC -1 points0 points ago

it's common sense

It's not common sense. It is rational to suggest otherwise, like NotSoFastElGuapo suggests, but the mere fact that so many people judge animal emotions on human emotion-basis proves that it is not common sense.

[–]ShaneWegner 3 points4 points ago

I for one am believing that, even with human tendency to project, mammalian experience has enough in common to translate basic facial mappings. Until I have strong evidence otherwise, I'm gonna assume elephants have an emotion called happy/amazed and this elephant is feeling it.

[–]felixkatz 14 points15 points ago

There's not much in common between a human smile and a chimpanzee's smile for example: "When a chimp opens its mouth, pulls back its lips, and shows its teeth, it appears to be smiling or grinning. But its grin isn’t assign of pleasure. Instead, a grinning chimp reveals fear"

http://scienceray.com/biology/zoology/why-chimpanzees-smile/

[–]Areo_Hotah 9 points10 points ago

ive seen pictures of dead whales smiling

[–]achievable_chode44 42 points43 points ago

I'm no whale expert but i'd say they weren't happy

[–]zaudo 27 points28 points ago

Really? But they were having (OH GOD I'M SO SORRY FOR THIS) a whale of a time.

[–]joemangle 9 points10 points ago

They were just pretending to be happy

[–]AaronM09 14 points15 points ago

His expression is just incredibly cute. That's what caught my heart.

[–]smellslikecomcast 4 points5 points ago

Errr. You've got to see this one video. I'm going to located it for you. The story of Shirley and Jenny. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0Z_vRYQ_Sg#t=6m0s

[–]Aneds 33 points34 points ago

He'll never forget this!

[–]djaccidentz 4 points5 points ago

Was gonna say a combination of both your comments xD It's so epic! Who could even down vote this also! The Elephant is ecstatically excited about what it is seeing, the capturing of this moment might have been so precise and these are moments that, if anything, we should be fond of. How can there not be some fascination in seeing an elephant that is, itself, utterly fascinated?

[–]Kauaian11 2 points3 points ago

literally took the words out of my mouth... you may want to wash your hands...

[–]nickaroo 4 points5 points ago

Hate to ruin the mood but....That elephant has some pretty nice chest hair.

[–]laphmore[S] 243 points244 points ago

I couldn't find a specific photographer to credit, but the photo came from the Oregon Zoo photo gallery - amazing moments.

[–]cableturtle 161 points162 points ago

The photographer is Michael Durham. :)

[–]CalTossUp 34 points35 points ago

Do you see the human hiding behind the elephant?

[–]laphmore[S] 26 points27 points ago

AH...that makes sense to me now. I saw the person's sock and I kept thinking that it looked like the elephant had a bandage on it's leg, but I knew that wasn't right. Now, of course, I see that it's the zoo-keeper on the other side of the elephant.

Nice catch.

[–]nfsnobody 8 points9 points ago

Oh nice one, good call. AND HAPPY CAKE DAY!

[–]CalTossUp 22 points23 points ago

Oh no.. I just found out. WHAT DO I DO??

[–]strawberryquick 5 points6 points ago

Eat a nice big piece of cake!!! Enjoy

[–]laphmore[S] 39 points40 points ago

Thanks for finding the photographer's name.

[–]andersonmatt1125 3 points4 points ago

What was this? Did they let the animals tour the zoo or something?

[–]smellycooter 35 points36 points ago

Our Zoo's pretty sweet, I reccomend anyone visitng Oregon to go there, cheap admission, fresh made waffle cones, and Tamarins!

[–]einzelganger 18 points19 points ago

The Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport is also great if anyone is visiting Oregon. It's also right next to the Rogue Brewery. Ye can't go wrong with craft beer and sea animals!

[–]darknecross 3 points4 points ago

I want to find a damned Chocolate Stout so bad. None of the stores I've checked have it.

[–]thenewiBall 3 points4 points ago

Yum fresh Tamarins!

[–]woofers02 12 points13 points ago

Must be Samudra.

Yeah I know the elephants' names. What.

[–]hottoddy 9 points10 points ago

Nope, it's Chendra.

[–]darthkitteh 7 points8 points ago

I thought to myself "Oh wow, that looks just like the sea lion area at the zoo here! I wonder if it was designed by the same people." /derp

[–]yakkafoobmog 4 points5 points ago

I was going to say...that sure looks a lot like Portland! Wow, that's pretty cool.

[–]grapejellysucks 4 points5 points ago

I was just about to ask how something like this happens.

To the guy below me, I wish I could just work in a zoo. Oh my God, what a dream that would be

[–]laphmore[S] 3 points4 points ago

You can always volunteer at a zoo.

[–]TaurusA 2 points3 points ago

I thought that looked like the Oregon Zoo!

[–]slow_lerner 46 points47 points ago

A little background: Chendra is a small elephant from Borneo. She was born in the wild, but was shot in one eye. She was actually the 'pet' elephant at a school in Borneo for a while before she was brought to Oregon.

She is very sweet. My wife and I got to feed her and give her a bath when they used offer educational interactive experiences.

We also got to feed Gus the Sea lion and his companion Julius in a different experience.

They have been taking the female elephants for walks around the zoo as an enrichment activity for a few years now. Always early mornings before they open.

[–]derpina_is_a_mermaid 2 points3 points ago

How does this comment only have 3 points??!! Thank you so much for sharing some background. Also: 1. I am sooo jealous of you and your wife and 2. Oh great! She has one eye on top of everything else???!! It's ok....I'll just go cry for a while.

[–]lolbacon 5 points6 points ago

At the San Diego Zoo we were lucky to see staff walking a cheetah along side a golden retriever first thing when the park opened up.

[–]andrealammie 4 points5 points ago

"OH MY GOD THIS IS AMAZING HOW DO I FRIENDS WITH WATER ELEPHANT THINGY?"

What I would imagine was going through that elephant's head at that moment.

[–]Rarg 148 points149 points ago

"JUST" an elephant?

Is it really "JUST" an elephant? Or is this a picture of something actually quite remarkable, and by adding "Just" you're making it out to be worth less than it actually is. I'm sick of seeing "JUST" at the front of every interesting photo on Reddit.

This IS a photo of an elephant visiting a sea lion, not "just" an elephant visiting a sea lion.

[–]russate 100 points101 points ago

Keep fighting the good fight my friend.

[–]woolysockofdoom 66 points67 points ago

Cause reddit is home of originality.

[–]laphmore[S] 49 points50 points ago

Point taken. Thank you.

[–]Rarg 10 points11 points ago

Thank you. Words like "just", in my opinion, are breeding a language of unspecified cutesy talk. We're all better than that.

[–]starphish 18 points19 points ago

My generalization with no additional evidence: Your friends secretly dislike you.

[–]laphmore[S] 42 points43 points ago

Understood. However, this is posted in /r/aww, so some level of cutesy talk is to be expected.

[–]ThaFuck 10 points11 points ago

Geez. OP apologised for not following your opinion on something and you still can't let go.

Chill the fuck out Buzz Killington.

[–]xxx_blade_smokah_xxx 4 points5 points ago

agreed

[–]munchiselleh 13 points14 points ago

I've always thought "Just" was meant to be sarcastic in nature, implying that the content of the thread is actually remarkable or out of the ordinary.

Ex: "Just a firefighter rescuing a small child from a raging inferno."

[–]eVALV 4 points5 points ago

Yep. To me "An elephant visiting a sea lion" makes something boring out of something awesome. "Just an elephant visiting a sea lion" seems to give it a more jovial tone. Maybe it's just the voice in my head.

[–]Kwinten -1 points0 points ago

We know. But that word seems to have been driven into the ground, sarcastic or not, it's annoying and pointless.

Like the other trend of starting every title with "So".

[–]stferago 13 points14 points ago

It's a valid literary technique called "understatement". Granted, it is overused.

[–]jamescagney 7 points8 points ago

That's an understatement.

[–]trtpow 16 points17 points ago

[–]VonSchplintah 2 points3 points ago

I know elephants are crazy smart compared to most animals but it still makes you wonder what he thinks of the situation. Animals never encounter transparent barriers in nature, let glass separating land and sea animals. What the heck could be going through his brain?

[–]owl55512 1 point2 points ago

PS- The sea lions name is Gus and Chendra (the elephant) is actually a girl :)

This is actually kind of a common occurrence at the Oregon Zoo, before the doors open in the mornings, the elephant keepers will sometimes take the cows (girls) on a walk. Enrichment and stuff, you know? Nothing quite like walking down the main pathway and being greeted by an elephant!

[–]Cobblestone_Rancher 1 point2 points ago

He's just gonna get trunk all the time and start habitually lion. Then before you know it, he'll pachyderm his bags and they'll sea-perate. Pshh, true love... Tusk, tusk.

[–]bluequail 1 point2 points ago

That baby elephant looks every bit as excited and thrilled as any other child that would get to see a sea lion. That is too darling.

[–]gnarsesh 4 points5 points ago

Anyone know how long sea lions' memory is? I figure if the elephant has met the sea lion, the elephant remembers.. but I really want to believe the sea lion knows they're old friends too.

[–]ExcellentGary 7 points8 points ago

Chendra, the zoo inspector, checks one of her young charges, Gus, a sea lion, before a busy day at Oregon Zoo starts.

"You got it, Ms. Chendra."

"Now, hi-5."

Obviously what we have here are mates. One is a werelephant and one is a weresealion. Both who were caught in their animal states and imprisoned in a zoo. But thanks to their enhanced senses, they still found each other. But don't worry, the rest of their pack will rescue them.

[–]mvg210 1 point2 points ago

This might be my favorite thing I've ever seen

[–]TenserTensor 0 points1 point ago

It's clearly a human being in a costume. You can clearly see the skin behind the peeling on the front right leg.

[–]Bikenutt 0 points1 point ago

Love the look on the pachyderms face, priceless.

[–]fresnosmokey 0 points1 point ago

Is it just me, or does that elephant actually really look amazed?

[–]aviciirox 0 points1 point ago

He/she looks so excited.

[–]Mikeydoes 0 points1 point ago

I thought an Elephant visited a Snoop Lion for a second.

[–]Tasty123 0 points1 point ago

[–]PenGinger 1 point2 points ago

I shall call you Squishy, and you shall be mine. And you shall be my Squishy.

[–]LongLeggedLurk 0 points1 point ago

This made my day. I really want to see a clip of the elephants/sea lions reaction!

[–]an_usual_man 0 points1 point ago

Five-legged elephant!

[–]celtz 0 points1 point ago

Is that Elephant's bone exposed on his front right leg? Poor, but happy lil thang.

[–]Bulldozer99 0 points1 point ago

The elephant looks so fucking excited

[–]strawberryquick 0 points1 point ago

The big smile on the elephants face is beautiful, you can even see it in his eyes.

[–]jonasperrin 1 point2 points ago

[–]rikashiku 0 points1 point ago

When I clicked on this, I was expecting to see Snoop Lions face.

[–]DrPhobos 1 point2 points ago

That happened at the Oregon Zoo In Portland. Every morning, before they open, the elephants are taken on a walk around the zoo as part of the daily exercise. This picture is pretty damn cute!!
