The two words are etymological twins, both borrowed from the Turkish "serbet." They are joined by "syrup" in being all ultimately derived from the Arabic root meaning "to drink."

Actually, in the UK, sherbet is commonly known as a fizzy powder. The other type is more known as sorbet.
