This is why I instinctively save about every 20 seconds.

[–]LurkerPatrol 40 points41 points ago

It's like hitting reload in first-person-shooter games. Kill one enemy, used one bullet... "better freaking reload, there might be 12398 guys around the corner"

[–]sp4ce 5 points6 points ago

dude if you used one bullet to kill someone, you must be the best gamer ever. it usually takes me three rounds to kill someone

[–]LurkerPatrol 0 points1 point ago

Haha, no me as well. I'm saying that even in the best case scenario (1 enemy, 1 bullet), the tendency is still there to reload.

AWPwhore!

[–]SOPA_NO 0 points1 point ago

If you've ever had a computer crash after 8 hours of work, you know why you want to save often.

[–]mamjjasond -4 points-3 points ago

Yep .. Alt, F, S gets mixed in with whatever I'm typing every minute or so.

[–]squishface2021 6 points7 points ago

how bizarre, why not ctrl+s?

[–]mamjjasond 1 point2 points ago

I've been doing it so long I can hardly remember why I started doing it that way. I guess it's that it's more fluid for me to just type those 3 keys in a row than to do Ctrl+S which is an awkward shape for my hand to make quickly while I'm typing.

[–]entersenor 25 points26 points ago

Saw this and saved my work. You have done the world a favor.

[–]pezz29 17 points18 points ago

Strictly speaking, that's only true if your work is any good for anybody.

[–]polobbq 6 points7 points ago

He would have killed us all if he lost his work.

[–]thefuckdude 1 point2 points ago

maybe hes a nazi, he may actually have killed some jews with his work.

how can you live with yourself, op?

[–]entersenor 0 points1 point ago

I'm a terrible person.

[–]SGTSHOOTnMISS 1 point2 points ago

We weren't even testing for that.

[–]entersenor 0 points1 point ago

I'm in space!

[–]I_AM_NO_MAN_ 11 points12 points ago

That was horrifying...

[–]3nderr 16 points17 points ago

As a 3D animator.. This is very relevant. Stupid Maya..

[–]davisr 5 points6 points ago

How large are Maya's saves? I do CAD work in Inventor, and it takes 2 minutes (!) to write 500MB assemblies.

[–]searinox 2 points3 points ago

It depends on what do you have in the file. It can range from 300kb to several gigabytes of data.

[–]desrosiers -1 points0 points ago

I work some enormous assemblies, and 500 MB is hella big. That's basically some damn big assemblies, or over-complex parts going on. Look into level-of-detail?

Also, Solidworks is much better at this, what with lightweight loading of assemblies.

[–]3nderr 0 points1 point ago

Depends on what you are working on. Visual Fx can be notoriously large, so can full render setups. I havent personally worked on a file THAT large but I've seen others work on them. The thing is, Maya is notorious for crashing a lot, its gotten better but youre fucked if you work on a Mac b/c its a port and it crashes every 10mins..

[–]roboscorcher 2 points3 points ago

I know your feel all too well. Today, I imported a giant Sketchup file into 3DS max, it converted to about 300,000 poly. By the end of the day, my boss got me a new graphics card - the old one was slightly above integrated graphics.

Having 3D software finally run in real time is...heavenly.

[–]inmate655321 6 points7 points ago

As a tech support person, this is what I imagine all of my customer's are like.

[–]iama_XXL 8 points9 points ago

Save early; save often.

My programming prof pounded that into our heads, haven't forgotten it yet.

[–]servercobra 4 points5 points ago

Not only saving, but branching, committing, and pushing to your repository early and often. Saved my ass when my hard drive decided it didn't like spinning.

[–]Mapes 7 points8 points ago

[–]questdragon47 2 points3 points ago

One of my classmates worked for 6 hours without saving anything... then his computer crashed.

as someone who only works with questionable computers, i save every 5 minutes. I don't understand how you can go that long without saving

[–]KingKidd 0 points1 point ago

I don't understand how you can go that long without saving

Because in this century, computers save automatically.

[–]habitats 1 point2 points ago

Oh this is from a clip I've seen. Anyone remember which?

[–]CitizenJake 2 points3 points ago

Gmod Idiot Box maybe? Not quite sure

[–]habitats 1 point2 points ago

No, but that was fun too!

[–]LeftyNS 1 point2 points ago

[–]fodrox04 1 point2 points ago

You play DayZ too?

[–]crux510 1 point2 points ago

I'm currently running a program in IDL that uses atmospheric data. Currently I'm working with 12 months of data for temperature with 144x288x42 3-D resolution, each of those points also have 8 local times with data. I have been waiting for the computer to draw a contour plot of the amplitude of the tide with a period of 24 hours for 2 hours now...

[–]diversionmary 0 points1 point ago

What are the specs of the comp?

[–]crux510 0 points1 point ago

The one I'm currently useing has 2.2 GHz quad, 4GB DDR2, and an aging 500GB HDD. Once they get my new one working, things should go faster.

[–]diversionmary 0 points1 point ago

Much faster!

[–]crux510 0 points1 point ago

The two big bottlenecks were amount of ram and the speed of the HDD.

[–]eighmie 1 point2 points ago

I got my boss to buy me a new computer one day when he was wandering around the office and saw me sitting at my desk doing nothing for almost an hour....Well sir, the 32 page graphics intensive catalog that I have been working on for almost a month now is saving on this Windows 2000 machine that you graciously gave me when I started here 3 years ago. It has 1 gig of ram and the catalog takes 40 minutes to save. ...New computer on my desk the next day.

[–]Cletus_Van_Dang 1 point2 points ago

What is this clip from? I'm intrigued.

[–]LeftyNS 1 point2 points ago

[–]sp4ce 0 points1 point ago

definitely looks like "Gary's Mod". If you have Half-Life 2 (or anything else with the HL2 engine), you can get it. very, very fun online.

[–]Fascist_Orange 0 points1 point ago

I watched this for a few minutes trying to figure out who the hell would throw a book at someone having a seizure.

[–]marshmallowbob 0 points1 point ago

But where did the book come from?

[–]diversionmary 0 points1 point ago

I am your IT person. You have to tell me if this kind of thing is happening. I have a schedule and budget for your workstation, but if something is going wrong, I'm going to fix or replace it. Your burdened rate costs way more in overhead than a workstation amortized over three years. Your downtime is my enemy!

[–]doot_doot 0 points1 point ago

One time in school I was nearly finished with an essay. I took a second to stretch before writing the conclusion to the paper. It was nearing 3am. I stretched out my feet and my heel came down up the power button of the surge protector. Everything went dark.

[–]Flamo_the_Idiot_Boy 0 points1 point ago

I use CorelDraw at work. If I don't save every 2 minutes I would never get anything done because that shit crashes ALL the FUCKING TIME.

[–]athinnes 0 points1 point ago

I feel that last box type thing flying in at the end is a co-worker getting in on the action.

[–]DutchmanDavid 0 points1 point ago

If you're working on a cheapish PC or laptop, it's a good chance you don't have enough RAM and your computer will start to use your Hard Drive as RAM (it's called Virtual Memory), which is slow as balls.

[–]wojx 1 point2 points ago

Ctrl+S all the TIME.

[–]lipplog -3 points-2 points ago

What app these days doesn't have auto-save?
