Rainbow Amarr, best Amarr

[–]MisterFDotCom 0 points1 point ago

I'm amused at the contrast between the religious conservatism of the Amarr, and the laser Pride flag that's going on here.

[–]mike_antAmarr 0 points1 point ago

Where is his multifrequency one at?

[–]skayAmarr -1 points0 points ago

well. they all made range i guess...

TEST Orbital Bombardment [fixed][fixed]

[–]internuttheadAmarr 6 points7 points ago

Nice photo - This was taken out on Kwajalien in the Marshall Islands. The Americans have a missile range where they test fire from California and land in the massive lagoon they have there.

I used to work there - that is where I recognized the photo.

Here is the source of the photo

Here is the info about the Missile range

Amarr FTW!

[–]tyloGallente -1 points0 points ago

The Amarr are attacking!? Man the Howitzers, men!

[–]LakeSolon 1 point2 points ago

Links: Your Peacekeeper link was bad so here it is without the bogus character. And a direct link to the file page for the image and the reasonable size of the image itself for RES users.

More Trivia: What you're seeing is a streak of light (object moving through the frame in less time than the exposure of the camera) resulting from each of the re-entry vehicles from a MIRV (Multiple Independently-targetable Reentry Vehicles) ICBM, one missile but many nukes, specifically the LGM-118 Peacekeeper. The original image wasn't multicolored.

I actually show the picture to people (in part because it's damn pretty) and ask what they think it might be. It's such an unfamiliar thing people have to really stretch to come up with a plausible answer and the results can be entertaining.

[–]internuttheadAmarr 1 point2 points ago

Upvote for being an over-achieving know it all.

So basically - you are a Redditor. Congrats! :)

[–]LakeSolon 1 point2 points ago

It's when the under-achieving know-nothings get upvoted that the problems begin.

So, that's not going to work. We won't see Amarr ships doing bombardments using lasers.

The laser attenuation will make any laser bombardment useless on planets with atmospheres.

Get y'all fancy asses in a decent gun boat for a change.

[–]CBJamoMinmatar 11 points12 points ago

Also, kinetic weapons + gravity well, fuck yeah.

[–]TalkingBackAgainGallente 1 point2 points ago

Damn straight, baby!

[–]Alexace31190Amarr 0 points1 point ago

You also have an atmosphere to worry about. Friction, bro.

[–]CBJamoMinmatar -1 points0 points ago

A 1400mm cannon shell will make it through the atmosphere much better than a laser, bro.

[–]Alexace31190Amarr 0 points1 point ago

It will, but don't act like it is somehow improved because of gravity. The effects of friction far outweigh the force of gravity from a planetary body.

[–]ElectricWarr -2 points-1 points ago

Oh, so stuff just bounces straight back off the atmosphere at you? I don't think that's what you mean.

[–]Alexace31190Amarr 0 points1 point ago

What the hell are you talking about? When did I ever say that atmospheres repel things?

[–]ElectricWarr -1 points0 points ago

The effects of friction far outweigh the force of gravity from a planetary body.

Like I said, I don't think that's what you meant to say.

[–]Alexace31190Amarr 0 points1 point ago

It is what I meant to say. He stated that the gravity well made atmospheres better for projectile ballistics. I said that the force of friction on the projectile far outweighs the benefits that gravity would provide.

[–]ElectricWarr 0 points1 point ago

Right! Not quite what you said though, is it? The force due to atmospheric drag on a falling projectile is only larger than "the force of gravity from a planetary body" while the projectile is travelling faster than it's terminal velocity. Also, CBJamo never tried to say that a gravity well "made atmospheres better for projectile ballistics".

Just be properly specific in the future, k?

...bro.

[–]qulquMinmatar -2 points-1 points ago

Umm, not really...

Asteroids kind of blast holes in the ground, powered by gravity.

[–]Alexace31190Amarr 0 points1 point ago

They do, but you know how friction slows them down and destroys or reduces their mass? My point is that projectile weapons are not somehow vastly better than lasers because they still have to deal with the atmosphere.

[–]qulquMinmatar -2 points-1 points ago

destroys or reduces their mass

First law of thermodynamics mate, and lasers do not benefit from gravity, so projectiles is the way to go, unless you are firing on an atmosphere-less rock.

[–]Alexace31190Amarr 0 points1 point ago

Well I meant to say it destroys them or reduces their mass. Also, the whole point is that projectiles don't benefit from gravity either because they're already going way faster than terminal velocity.

[–]qulquMinmatar -2 points-1 points ago

Wrong, you still get the force from gracity acting counter to the force of air displacement (drag should be rather low if the rounds are designed for this) and unless you are firing at a planet of antimatter it CANNOT reduce the mass, it might spread the impact out a little, but you never get rid of the mass.

A laser on the other hand is scattered, refracted, and absorbed along the way, gaining nothing from the trip.

[–]altshiftMCaldari 4 points5 points ago

Which means Sir Issac Newton is the deadliest son of a bitch in space!

[–]Chemal 2 points3 points ago

Lasers of that size over a few hundred KM? Not an issue. Look at your distance from the planet when you land at 0 - it's less than 1k usually.

[–]TalkingBackAgainGallente 1 point2 points ago

We're not talking about 'directly' overhead because the ship will be susceptible to the planet's gravity.

The laser has to cut through the atmospheric soup to hit the target. I really don't think that's going to work well.

[–]Chemal 5 points6 points ago

Works well the other way for pew pewing satellites. I'm sure tech that allows for island sized spaceships will do just fine.

Can't believe we're arguing about how realistic eve is...

[–]TalkingBackAgainGallente 1 point2 points ago

It is true that the battleships are very large vessels and would have the power plant required to drive the weapons. Physics does apply though.

We're talking about how realistic EVE is but I've seen a lot of science fiction turn into science fact. And this only in the space of a few decades.

For right now the ships of EVE are too big of a challenge for humanity, but I wouldn't want to take money on the fact that it will never happen.

When I was a kid my toys had pictures of buttons on them and sometimes they emitted a beep. Now kids sneer at last years' smart phone when they don't appreciate just how much computing power they have at their disposal.

They are now becoming more familiar with the Higgs boson. There really is no telling what technologies that will yield. Einstein predicted the laser 40 years before the first one was built. I can't imagine what kids in 40 year's time will shrug off as just the latest toy. I firmly believe we're going to be seeing amazing technologies emerge in this century.

With 3D-printers and abundant materials, who knows what we'll start doing.

[–]Chemal 1 point2 points ago

I was referring mostly to the whole bullshit space is filled with gel crap...

[–]TalkingBackAgainGallente 2 points3 points ago

Not quite sure what you're getting at, sport.

[–]Chemal 0 points1 point ago

CCP's explanation for why ships are so slow in eve is that space in New Eden is filled with a gel like substance - aka space isn't a vacuum.

[–]sh0rtwave 1 point2 points ago

I present to you the Passive Targeting System Mark I.

http://www.eve-wiki.net/index.php?title=Passive_Targeter_I

Note that it uses "Uses advanced acoustical and visual targeting to identify threats. "

Enough said.

[–]TalkingBackAgainGallente 2 points3 points ago

I don't buy that 'slowness' at all. An iteron Mark V will do 6 AU/sec. That's only 500 times the speed of light. What do they mean, slow?

[–]nallarAmarr 4 points5 points ago

Slowing down, for example. When you stop the ship, it just stops for no apparent reason. It's as if there's a high drag, even though you're in space.

[–]Chemal -1 points0 points ago

... the speed that ships do when not warping. It's pathetic.

[–]Hostilian 0 points1 point ago

There's also no such thing as a thruster that lets you put electricity in and get thrust out. Real spacecraft carry propellant to move around.

[–]keyboard12 -1 points0 points ago

I thought ion thrusters used electrical current or something? On my phone so CBA to look it up.

[–]TidalPotentialMinmatar[!] 1 point2 points ago

That's not it at all.

The warp drive is on standby at all times when undocked. It takes station facilities to turn it off safely - if you turn it off in space, it blows up. While it is on standby, it exhibits a drag effect - this is why there is a friction coefficient - the warp drive pulls on the quantum foam or what have you to slow you down. This is also why more powerful engines (or boosted engines through microwarpdrive or afterburner modules) increase your max speed.

[–]never_listens 2 points3 points ago

We're talking about magical lasers that are visible, in vacuum, even thought it can be anywhere on the EM spectrum. I doubt whoever cooked that up gives a crap about real world physics.

[–]TalkingBackAgainGallente 1 point2 points ago

okay face

[–]never_listens 0 points1 point ago

[–]TalkingBackAgainGallente 0 points1 point ago

That's not the okay face.

At least, not the one I was thinking of.

[–]never_listens 1 point2 points ago

Well, Yao Ming corrected me too, so ...okay.

[–]KhaimCaldari -1 points0 points ago

That's not the distance to the surface, genius. It's the distance to whatever invisible sphere CCP defined as "planet".

[–]Chemal 0 points1 point ago

Which for the purposes of orbital bombardment is the distance to the planet right now. No need to insult.

[–]KhaimCaldari 0 points1 point ago

But that's game mechanics. TalkingBackAgain is clearly talking about real-world physics, which has at best a tenuous relation with EVE's physics.

[–]psiphre 0 points1 point ago

atmosphere isn't "soup"y to all frequencies of light.

[–]ThelastTzarAmarr 1 point2 points ago

So what's the difference?

[–]creepy_duncanGallente 0 points1 point ago

took me a little bit to see also, but the in the original all the beams are white in this one they are multiple colors

[–]HiddenFremenCaldari 0 points1 point ago

Awesome
