Reddit's worst nightmare : funny

1.) The BDSM community can't stand it because it encourages EXTREMELY unsafe behavior (using silk ties to bind someone, coercing a vanilla virgin into trying things way faster than is safe, not talking and negotiating before doing a scene) and implies that a person can only be involved in the scene as a result of childhood trauma (Christian's molestation by his mother's friend.) Supposedly, the BDSM elements lessen in the later books as Christian 'heals'. It is a very poor introduction to the scene and could result in someone being severely injured. So, those of us who are working to make BDSM more culturally acceptable and accessible are very frustrated by this setback.

2.) It started out as Twilight fanfiction. The writing is at average fanfiction level. MUCH worse than Twilight, imo.

3.) There's much better S&M smut out there. The Story of O is a popular example, but in my opinion you can search out something to suit your specific kinks on your own just using Google.

4.) Some people are indeed horrified at the thought of their mothers masturbating.

So, those are the basics. :) On the one hand, it has hopefully inspired some closet kinksters to come out and explore the scene, but I'm afraid it's doing more harm than good.

I asked myself the same question some time ago, so I've tried to read all the recent front page post discussions to see if I could get a sense of what the problem was. I also broke down and read the damned books. Fuck, the things I do for science schlick schlick schlick. Here's what I've managed to glean so far...

TheKindestDemon's list isn't really the core reasons why Reddit (i.e. the majority, the hivemind) hates the book. Most Redditors aren't really aware of or understand #1, and I only see one or two (if any) BDSM community folks chiming in on discussions outside their own subreddits. #2 doesn't appear to be the source of the hate (most folks hate it whether they knew this fact or not), it's just fuel for the fire. #3 doesn't cause the hate, it's just a "wtf" side note to other discussions. As for #4, while there's a lot of joking about soccer moms (presumably fed to them by the media, SNL skits, etc.), I haven't seen more than one or two make that connection for their own moms. Mostly, it seems to be a girl thing that's really easy to crack jokes about.

Most of the real complaints (from single, male redditors I'm guessing) revolve around women being hypocrites for getting on guys' cases about porn, then talking publicly about 50 Shades... what they don't realize is that the good thing about the book's popularity is the potential for a shift towards more open acceptance of non-vanilla sex, porn, and generally all things sex. Another source of the hate is the simple fact what's effectively a poorly written romance novel has become a record breaking best seller (as discussed in #2), and topics related to that (why would any intelligent person waste their time on such drivel, etc.).

Men who have gfs/wives reading the book are not complaining... they report their partners are coming to bed horny and they have nothing but love for anything that provides that result.

Related to #4, my BFF's teenager informed her neither of us is allowed to read the book (of course, she didn't know I'd read it). That child has no fucking idea. When BFF and I were talking about it, I basically summed it up as "most of it's pretty tame compared to a lot of the stuff you and I have gotten into." Why do kids think their generation invented fun?
