This is a 300 ft deep, 60 foot wide "piping feature" that happened in Guatemala City in mid-2010.

Story @ NatGeo

[–]chriscombs 288 points289 points ago

We also published a gallery of more pictures of this sinkhole, as well as a slideshow round-up of sinkholes 'round the world. There's nothin' I love more than a good sinkhole picture! (Lie. There's one thing: a heinous pun.)

[–]5panks 66 points67 points ago

What do you mean we? Do you work for NatGeo? Not criticizing just wondering.

[–]chriscombs 294 points295 points ago

Yes, I'm the photo editor (meaning picture-picker) of National Geographic News online. We're a small crew based out of Nat Geo HQ in Washington, D.C. Lately we've been working with the magazine more closely, but the stuff I work on is internets-specific (suits me fine).

[–]casey12141 219 points220 points ago

AMA TIME

[–]vertigo1083 67 points68 points ago

For the record, at the same time, there were 4 of you with an AMA response. No one had any upvotes yet.

I chose yours.

[–]Thisismyfinalstand 21 points22 points ago

He is the decider!

[–]Intolight 68 points69 points ago

IT'S AMA TIME!!

[–]chriscombs 38 points39 points ago

Dang. Didn't think of that. I'll bring it up with the bosses...

[–]Intolight 15 points16 points ago

If you do one, you have to answer mine. Being an amateur photographer, I love to know what goes on at Nat Geo, especially the photo department.

[–]MuckBulligan 6 points7 points ago

They are all on their best behavior during the Christmas party.

[–]soonbesleeping 10 points11 points ago

Please consider an AMA!

[–]thascarecro 13 points14 points ago

Wow. You have a pretty sick job. But im sure you knew that already. Picture picker? Im jelly.

[–]Zimvader00 21 points22 points ago

I'm guessing that he does in fact work for Nat Geo. Considering his user name is Chris Combs and there's a photo editor with that same name that works for Nat Geo.

Here's his twitter account.

[–]Gimli_The_Dwarf 2 points3 points ago

I concur. I met him on a shoot in Minas Tirith. He's very cool.

[–]smackson 1028 points1029 points ago

This is great. In the last few days I've finally started seeing more "informative" comments make it to the top instead of some 300-comment-long circle-jerk of jokes...

[–]macberto 40 points41 points ago

Why don't they add a second arrow or another icon for "This comment is funny" so people can just upvote that instead. Then I can filter out that shit.

[–]Zephy73 437 points438 points ago

Yeah I agree... I've been staying away from reddit lately because 99% of the posts I try to find more information about, I just spend 10 minutes sifting through retarded puns.

[–]JimmyHavok 46 points47 points ago

Collapse the first thread.

[–]Catnapwat 99 points100 points ago

Click thread, scroll scroll scroll, aha there's the relevant comments.

[–]JoeChieftw 59 points60 points ago

I love 'hide child comments' in Reddit Enhancement Suite

[–]esdawg 61 points62 points ago

Yeah. But it's disheartening when the circle jerk pun chain gets twice as many upvotes as the actual relevant and informative commentary.

[–]atheist_ 135 points136 points ago

Are we circle jerking about hating circle jerks? I want in!

[–]vertigo1083 21 points22 points ago

Make sure you know how to execute a proper reacharound, sir. The last fellow chafed too much.

[–]Sovarin 37 points38 points ago

In that case you may like this one from last month i remember reading. A hole actually opened up and swallowed a car as it drove down the road.

[–]Metalslave 33 points34 points ago

Here in my car, I feel safest of all. No wait, fuck!

[–]Wazoople 4 points5 points ago

You... you fed the trolls.

[–]whymeogod 1 point2 points ago

Seriously. The puns are by far the worst part of this site. I make it a point to downvote every last one of those little bitches every time I come across them. And seeing as I am 99% mobile that takes some serious dedication. And please pun lovers downvote me. You can't come close to the downvotes I have given your brethren.

[–]deathbytray 50 points51 points ago

I actually unsuccessfully googled to find out what happened to it in the 2 years since. Did they fill it? What did they fill it with? (And to the guy who was about to say they used my mom to plug it, fuck you. She has a glandular condition.)

[–]Kensin 6 points7 points ago

hopefully they've at least roped the thing off or put up a fence around it.

[–]HappyHootbot 8 points9 points ago

i was in Guatemala City last year and inquired about it (the more recent one). Apparently it was still there, covered over and.. blocked off. Wanted to see it - but no time :(

[–]allovertheplaceband 34 points35 points ago

THIS...IS...GUATEMALAAAAA

[–]HeroOfCanton 51 points52 points ago

I saw this picture and thought, "Nope, no way that's real, that's just another reddit photoshop trying to scare me. See, look at the comments, top post will be proof..... what... wtf, shit it's real. FUCK THAT'S SCARY."

[–]Kodiac136 15 points16 points ago

Holy crap. It's the hero of Canton. I've always wanted to meet you.

[–]Perryn 25 points26 points ago

It's not a disaster, it's a feature!

[–]thomaswagner_91 28 points29 points ago

I'm guatemalan and that is how we keep our hopes up.

[–]SmoothWD40 4 points5 points ago

Thank you.

[–]LukeOfHazzard 4 points5 points ago

I like this. If I have a bug in some code and it is too close to deadline to fix it, I always just say it's a feature.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Frieza's Death ball wasn't strong enough to blow up the earth

[–]MattSaki 1 point2 points ago

I am always curious who the 63 people are who are like "you know what, fuck this know it all, DOWNVOTE!!!"

[–]bigroblee 1 point2 points ago

Oh, it's not a true sinkhole? Well, OK then.

[–]liquidfist 160 points161 points ago

I wonder how something like this would be fixed

[–]nuxxor 80 points81 points ago

The hole is 60' wide 300' deep. It would take around 31,415 cubic yards of soil to fill it.

A large tri-axle dump truck this size: http://i.imgur.com/BBY1q.jpg holds 19 yards.

So you would need around 1654 truck loads.

[–]analrapistaccountant 129 points130 points ago

Or one of these.

[–]Mystery_Hours 171 points172 points ago

That thing is scarier than the hole.

[–]dionysus6794 87 points88 points ago

That's what she said.

[–]dzubz 9 points10 points ago

Oh you tickled my jelly with that comment!

[–]WhatTheFlux1 32 points33 points ago

Is... Is that real?

[–]mrhelton 51 points52 points ago

[–]Neebat 9 points10 points ago

If you're lucky, Bagger 288. I love that fucking video. (At work, can't tell if it is.)

[–]brodie7838 7 points8 points ago

It is.

[–]isoceans 8 points9 points ago

Had to be posted.

[–]analrapistaccountant 9 points10 points ago

Why yes, yes it is.

[–]SummaDatPurpleStuff 5 points6 points ago

Bagger 288

[–]LobsterFist 5 points6 points ago

"How are we going to fill this hole sir?"

"I KNOW, LET'S USE A SAW."

[–]jungleboogiemonster 11 points12 points ago

No problem, make it a landfill.

[–]astrael91 2 points3 points ago

First you have to dig deeper until you hit the mantle. Then you make it a giant incinerator.

[–]Jonny_Watts 9 points10 points ago

Where did the 31,415 cubic yards of soil go in the first place?

[–]original186 1 point2 points ago

Or you could just put a big ass blanket over it.

[–]brakedust 270 points271 points ago

Move.

[–]TremendousPete 24 points25 points ago

You could fill it with water and make an awesome (and possibly the deepest in the world) swimming pool. ignore that water is what caused the sinkhole initially

[–]Dyolf_Knip 6 points7 points ago

For sinkholes, lack of water may be what caused it.

[–]one-half 24 points25 points ago

First thing you gotta do is hunt down and kill the worm that dug it, so he doesn't ruin your fix.

[–]I_Crap_Butterflies 11 points12 points ago

WE SHOULD TAKE GUATEMALA AND PUSH IS SOMEWHERE ELSE!

[–]ObiWonderSLC 10 points11 points ago

Lived in Guatemala:

The reason for the sink hole was nearby volcanic activity. It was VERY bad and it started raining ash. After the dust settled they had a collective cleaning of Guate (Guatemala for short, you know, just in case you couldn't figure that out and were confused(TLDR: Guate=Guatemala))

The country hired the garbage trucks to go from house to house collecting the ash from the volcano and used it to flll the sink hole. All is now well and I was able to drive through this intersection and you'd never know it happened. Crazy huh?

[–]liquidfist 5 points6 points ago

thats a very interesting and creative way to solve two problems ant once. Good job Guate!

[–]Hat_in_the_cat19 126 points127 points ago

Somebody should call your mom...I'm sure she could plug it up.

[–]tom_riddler 28 points29 points ago

[–]Pay_attentionmore 47 points48 points ago

Nice try various unimportant supermarkets too poor to stock up on Coca Cola/ Pepsi products Edit: grammar

[–]triplea20x 5 points6 points ago

Or the Safeway brand lemon-lime soda for 35¢ (or 25 if you have a safeway card).

[–]Cepheia 3 points4 points ago

I was thinking the same thing. Is the sinkhole the same today? Plans?

[–]thomaswagner_91 6 points7 points ago

I believe it was covered somehow, but the last I heard the people that had to move out because of it could not move back in.

[–]BenKenobi88 4 points5 points ago

Man if I had to move out because of that, I would be so angry I couldn't go back.

[–]MacFatty 2 points3 points ago

probably something like, jamming steel bars into the side and kind of "bridge-build" over it. Too bad it's kind of in the slums, it would look amazing with a see-through floor.

[–]fitorockx0 43 points44 points ago

That happened in 2010, this one is from 2007... Like 2 kms away from each other http://i.imgur.com/qxA4w.jpg http://i.imgur.com/eA7lg.jpg

[–]squidboots 23 points24 points ago

You think they'd learn to not divide by zero.

[–]ninjames 38 points39 points ago

Really stupid question: what would be at the bottom of a sinkhole?

[–]brownwehc09 27 points28 points ago

not stupid at all! anyone know what's at the bottom?

[–]rmass 25 points26 points ago

Persians who didn't choose their words carefully

[–]iaccidentlytheworld 20 points21 points ago

Lost souls.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]cheesetrain 4 points5 points ago

That's a lot less scarier than what I was imagining..

[–]turnipradish 8 points9 points ago

It entirely depends on the geology of the region. I'm not familiar with Guatemalan's geological setting, but the article says that the city is lying on unconsolidated (i.e. loose) pumice rock. That's a volcanic rock, so you might say that there's more volcanic rock underneath the bottom of the sinkhole.

Typically, the progression as you go downwards anywhere on land is a few (maybe a few 10's of) metres of soil, 25-70 km of continental crust (ROCKS!!!) and then a few thousand kilometres of mantle (gooey rock!!!) and then the core (metals!!!).

Oh, and there would probably be a lot of the same unconsolidated pumice at the bottom of the hole too, along with water. And a three-story building.

[–]daniyelly 12 points13 points ago

hell.

[–]tarkam 39 points40 points ago

If that scares you then you should see what happened last year also here in Guatemala: woman finds huge sinkhole under bed

Edit: 40ft deep and 32inches wide!

[–]dlite922 17 points18 points ago

You just single-handedly ruined what was left of Guatemala's tourist industry from every redditor that sees this.

Hope you're proud of yourself.

[–]iaccidentlytheworld 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, cross that place off my list of places to even think about visiting.

[–]Brianimosity 2 points3 points ago

Is that a fucking joke??? That is what nightmares are made of. Fuck.

[–]Tycon712 2 points3 points ago

""Thank God there are only material damages, because my grandchildren were running around the house, into that room and out to the patio," said Hernandez."

What is this woman thinking? I'd be getting the hell out of Guatemala.

[–]SupermanV2 101 points102 points ago

I forget I have a crippling fear of heights until I see shit like this. I felt like I was about to fall into the screen and down that hole.

[–]jewunit 161 points162 points ago

More like a fear of depths.

[–]ExcuseMyFLATULENCE 53 points54 points ago

Maybe the sky above us is a gigantic hole of which we can't see the edge.

[–]Mudkip_King 43 points44 points ago

NO EDGE

Dude? No Edge?

[–]Mudkip_King 8 points9 points ago

[–]LeonTrotsky_on_speed 16 points17 points ago

"Most people have a fear of heights. I have a fear of widths."

-Stephen Wright

[–]supercore23 21 points22 points ago

If it makes you feel better: Just remind yourself that anytime you're falling from higher than 40 feet you're just as dead. You can fall from 3 stories or 30, it probably won't matter.

So really, There's just one height to be afraid of.

[–]BreSput 23 points24 points ago

While you might die from 40 feet, people have survived falls from thousands of feet. Anything above around 2,000 feet is equivalent as you will hit terminal velocity if you fall 2,000 feet. At that height you will hit the ground going around 120 mph. I believe the people that survived landed in an environment that helped absorb much of the impact.

40 feet will hurt, but probably won't kill most people if you know how to take the fall or are willing to break your legs (or both). I don't imagine many people could survive a fall (onto a hard surface) from much higher than that.

For perspective it's also good to note that it's entirely possible to die from a fall of only a couple feet, or while standing on the ground if you slip in just the right way. It's not the height of the ship, but the motion in the ocean, or something like that.

[–]Level_32_Mage 11 points12 points ago

so, anything 50 feet or higher i should just relax and enjoy the ride?

edit: me and a friend visited the Grand Canyon one summer, and almost immediately strayed off the path onto cliff ledges that stuck pretty far out (yes not smart. didnt say it was.) it was sketchy as fuck. we both came to an agreement that if either of us fell, that the faller would yel as long/loud as they could so they the other person would know if it was worth while to hurry and get help. there really wasnt any chance of survival though. it was a straight drop at least 500 feet or so.

[–]sparton192 6 points7 points ago

Yes because your head can only take so much pressure pushing downwards. Your body reaches a maximum velocity and at that point you're just screwed. In my opinion I'd just hope my mind blacks out and I die in your situation.

[–]SkyrimNewb 5 points6 points ago

people have survived jumping out of planes without parachutes working. you can survive, you just have to have the devils luck

[–]MrGrieves- 5 points6 points ago

Praise Satan!

[–]Plastic_Indian 2 points3 points ago

dont tense up, that is what breaks bones. read an article about a drunk russian who jumped out of his apartment windows a few stories up, twice in a row, didn't get hurt.

[–]aesu 9 points10 points ago

So really, There's just one height to be afraid of.

Height, itself.

Emergence Day... better toss some grenades down there and close that hole up.

[–]lousy_at_handles 22 points23 points ago

Shoot a nuke down a bug hole... you get a lotta dead bugs.

[–]EstellaHavisham3 356 points357 points ago

The trick is to not be scared that you will fall, but to accept that if you do, you will die. Do it without the rope.

[–]Loomar 82 points83 points ago

This is like a summary of a scene, here is the actual quote.

Bruce Wayne: I do fear death. I fear dying in here while my city burns.

Blind Prisoner: Then make the climb.

Bruce Wayne: How?

Blind Prisoner: As the child did. Without the rope. Then fear will find you again.

from http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1345836/quotes

[–]Ploopie 39 points40 points ago

I didn't get that scene. The leap seemed so short. Batman must have jumped much wider gaps than that. Was it meant to be metaphorical?

[–]Loomar 157 points158 points ago

Everything in that movie is metaphorical.

[–]tensegritydan 95 points96 points ago

The scene that keeps coming back to me is Catwoman leaned over the BatPod. There must have been some deep symbolism there to keep my mind coming back to it over and over and over again.

[–]thatonefatass 23 points24 points ago

DAT ASS! or would it be CAT ASS?

[–]the_blackfish 5 points6 points ago

Titty sprinkles.

[–]Aniraco 35 points36 points ago

The rope holds you back, literally, from making the jump. No one goes up without wearing the rope though.

[–]MWozz 75 points76 points ago

I think it actually meant that, with the rope, there are no consequences for missing the jump, but without it you're motivated by the fear of death if you don't make it. Could be wrong, though.

[–]Lovebeard 21 points22 points ago

I mean, yeah, that's the obvious logic that everyone would believe. But it would actually make sense beyond some metaphorical bullshit about fear that the rope is too short and actually prevents you from making an otherwise totally doable jump.

Because lets be serious, even if you're the daughter of Jesus Christ or some shit, the Batman will always be able to jump 10x farther than you no matter how scared he is.

[–]soapbutt 3 points4 points ago

I mean the pit itself is one big metaphor.

[–]Huge_Jackmen 4 points5 points ago

DEY SHEY, DEY SHEY, BAH SUR RAH, BAH SUR RAH!

[–]BreakTheMold 136 points137 points ago

Now why you gotta do that?

[–]wheresnessie 11 points12 points ago

Syfy made this into a movie called Arachnoquake. It was hilarious.

[–]Atrei 12 points13 points ago

Ohhhh SyFy. Everything they make seems like a low budget parody.

[–]sirkablaam 14 points15 points ago

I just watched this for the first time last night! What a great (if horribly graphic) movie :D

[–]yousefk 14 points15 points ago

Even worse, there's a lego at the end you will step on if you fall in.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

Oh that's awesome. 8:15am and my day is already ruined.

[–]kwpung 13 points14 points ago

can anyone find a video of something like this happening? i wanna see how fast it sinks ...

[–]dzubz 3 points4 points ago

I second this.

[–]merk 9 points10 points ago

Something that interesting and 99% of the comments are lame jokes? I was hoping there'd be some pics/video of what it looks like down at the bottom.

[–]zzqqzz 7 points8 points ago

[–]dossier 6 points7 points ago

Drop in a large explosive and you have a sloping hill instead of a big hole

[–]alambert212 17 points18 points ago

So that's where Bane took Batman....

[–]webby_mc_webberson 18 points19 points ago

It seems like it wouldn't be so bad if you could see the bottom. But there isn't one.

[–]quadcem 17 points18 points ago

This view is a little more comforting ... it's definitely down there

[–]FountainsOfFluids 10 points11 points ago

That's just the top of the building it swallowed.

[–]zeug666 7 points8 points ago

RISE

[–]Tristania 5 points6 points ago

I've seen a few pics of sinkholes before but that one terrified me. I mean what makes these things happen? Is it unstable geology?

[–]jsake 9 points10 points ago

If a city is built on top of a large aquifer (porous ground that holds water) and uses that water at a faster rate than it is being replenished (which tends to be the case) it can lead to sinkholes. It's a pretty big problem in mexico city right now.
This one looks like a pretty extreme though, couldn't say if that's the cause... Might be a combination of things.

[–]shaggy9 3 points4 points ago

its the prison where Bane threw Batman....

Guatemala is a land formed by volcanoes. There are thousands of cave formations and huge Cenotes and because all of the vegetation there are more to be found. The area that is now an abyss was probably loose soil over an undocumented cavern that finally succumbed to the elements.
