Why is there a wizard with a boner head?

[–]AquaNeito 1 point2 points ago

love it

[–]Venjamin 4 points5 points ago

Skipped a few.. decades.

[–]Gurnsey_ 0 points1 point ago

Considering humanity had been around a couple thousand years, I think that's ok.

[–]blackfuse 301 points302 points ago

Meh, someone will create some "never become overweight" technology by then.

[–]forgottendrone 356 points357 points ago

They have it now, it's called not eating like a famished grizzly at every meal.

[–]blackfuse 57 points58 points ago

That is part of it, but a strictly sedentary life style is not going to help either.

Edit: Many people are explaining to me that you can in fact stay thin without exercise, I know this, I never said you couldn't.

[–]loulan 55 points56 points ago

That's not necessarily true... I spent so much time in front of my computer that I always forget to eat. I'm super thin!

[–]FranklinWearsPants 5 points6 points ago

Thin and healthy aren't the same thing, but I suppose thin and immobile is better than fat and immobile

[–]blackfuse 6 points7 points ago

I'm basically the same. Even when I want to eat a lot, I can't my I think my stomach is much smaller than the average person.

I didn't say you can't be thin doing nothing, it's just not helping.

[–]Sad_King_Billy 2 points3 points ago

Though being thin isn't the same thing as being healthy. As a fat person who doesn't exercise, I firmly believe that being active is conducive to good overall health. There are many overweight and underweight people in the U.S. who would be considered malnourished.

EDIT: I would be one of them.

[–]donpapillon 6 points7 points ago

I have an extremelly sedentary lifestyle and I'm not fat at all. I do live in another country, where we have radically different eating habits (we often skip breakfast and the biggest meal of the day is always lunch. And it's not really lunch without rice, beans and some vegetable.), but I'm sedentary as fuck. I'm not strong, but I'm not even chubby.

It's a lot more about what you put in your mouth that makes you fat or thin. My grandma stays at home and does little to nothing besides crochet, and she's similarly thin. And before you tell me it's my genes, I'll tell you I have a very fat uncle, who has a fat wife and three fatty little kids. Their daily consumption of sugar, fat and industrialized shit is disgusting.

Exercises help with a shit load of health issues, even affects the occurence of Alzheimer, but, when it comes to your figure, it's dwarfed by the importance of eating habits.

[–]loulan 4 points5 points ago

Yeah I guess it depends on the eating habits of where you're from. All the computer geeks I know here (in France) are thin. If you eat normally, you don't need to exercise to avoid being overweight.

[–]donpapillon 2 points3 points ago

Exactly. And happy cake day, my French friend.

[–]loulan 4 points5 points ago

Oh, you're French too! Merci :-)

[–]donpapillon 1 point2 points ago

I'm Brazillian actually, but friendly still. |-D

[–]loulan 3 points4 points ago

Aha, I read too much into the "papillon" from your nick ;D

[–]donpapillon 0 points1 point ago

Oh, makes sense. I just really like the Papillon book and film.

[–]zombiebarbie 1 point2 points ago

Ah That explains the rice, beans and veggies. I love that yucca flower you guys put on it too. mmmm

When I was in Brazil, I was surprised to see that rice and beans were served with every single meal, including breakfast.

[–]donpapillon 0 points1 point ago

Had to search for what a yucca was. Seems like it's another name for mandioca. Mandioca is fucking delicious, especially as farofa (looks like bread crumbs). What else did you have? Fried aimpim is amazing too.

And rice and beans for breakfast? Where the hell did you go in Brazil to eat that for breakfast?

For breakfast we usually eat some bread, crackers, cake, corn flakes, etc, nothing fancy; and we avoid fried stuff like eggs and bacon. And we usually drink black drip coffe (adults) or chocolate milk (anyone who enjoys life).

But that's what I know of Brazil, which is Rio de Janeiro, Minas, São Paulo, Brasília and Paraná. It's a huge fucking country, so I bet there's some freaky place where people eat rice and beans for breakfast.

[–]Delocaz 0 points1 point ago

Kan i haz zum karmaz az wellz? Mi frenzh tzoo, zee?

[–]donpapillon 0 points1 point ago

That reminds me of Brad Pitt in Inglourious Basterds trying to speak Italian.

[–]glabuz 0 points1 point ago

In the local US subway, they have this ad for a breakfast that includes a 20oz soda drink... That's crazy

[–]donpapillon 0 points1 point ago

That's around 570mL, right?

[–]glabuz 0 points1 point ago

I don't exactly know... But soda ? On Breakfast?

[–]donpapillon 0 points1 point ago

Oh, sorry, I focused on the amount. Yeah, soda on breakfast is a little disgusting.

I drank soda early in the morning sometimes, usually leaving for college or something, but it always feels wrong and anyone seeing coments on it.

[–]ets_nsm 1 point2 points ago

Are you kidding me? My forearms are GINORMOUS!

[–]zublits 1 point2 points ago

Actually, you can remain at an ideal weight without any exercise at all. Exercise is healthy for a different reason: cardio-vascular health. For weight loss (and maintenance) proper diet is all that is needed.

[–]CardboardHeatshield 1 point2 points ago

Can you also lose weight by eating like a horse and exercising like a maniac?

[–]zombiebarbie -1 points0 points ago

Depends what you eat. You can eat as much lean protein and veggies as you want.

I exercise a lot and if I don't watch what I eat, I carry more fat than I like.

[–]zublits 1 point2 points ago

That's false. Calories are calories. If you take in more than you burn it gets stored as fat. You can't defy the laws of thermodynamics.

[–]zombiebarbie 1 point2 points ago

Good luck eating 500 calories of kale.

[–]zublits 0 points1 point ago

Yes, but it takes a LOT of exercise to burn calories. For instance, I cycle for an hour at a fast pace and scarcely burn 500 calories. That's less than a bagel with cream cheese. Its a LOT easier to eat less than burn it off.

[–]blackfuse -1 points0 points ago

Well obviously, look at 3rd world countries.

[–]futt 0 points1 point ago

[–]JwinTheGreat -1 points0 points ago

Actually, they've found out that the average person today burns roughly the same amount of calories at the same rate as our hunter/gatherer ancestors. Diet controls the fat, exercise controls the fit. Most of us are just as fat as the hunter/gatherers, meaning most of us are not fat at all. Granted, the hunter/gatherers were in much better shape than many people today, but that has little to do with fat.

[–]KaptainKershaw 4 points5 points ago

Being a man of great carriage, I take umbrage to this statement.

Edit: Alas, I curse my poor orthography...

[–]redditbarns 0 points1 point ago

Your vocabulary intrigues me.

[–]derrick777 0 points1 point ago

or just go with lipo

[–]Nebulaoblivion 0 points1 point ago

And moving.

[–]Scythin 0 points1 point ago

Pffffffff-

[–]spankymuffin 0 points1 point ago

But I want to do that AND be thin/healthy.

[–]ayuhh -4 points-3 points ago

Because its working so well so far right?

[–]forgottendrone 4 points5 points ago

Just because fatties can't close their gluttonous mouths at mealtime and can't exercise restraint using portion control doesn't mean it doesn't work. If calories in is more than calories out, you will gain weight just as calories in being less than calories out will have you losing weight. Simple stuff, yet everyone has an excuse. They want magic pills and technology so they don't have to do any real work.

[–]ayuhh -5 points-4 points ago

Such a deep and original wisdom. You should write a book. Too bad that the original statement still stands strong as population is getting fatter.

[–]forgottendrone 3 points4 points ago

Just because people can't control themselves doesn't mean what I stated is false.

[–]DRAC2GUNZ 13 points14 points ago

Possibly, tiny micro machines that clean your veins, or destroy fat cells.

[–]ForumWarrior 5 points6 points ago

"Just lay back Mr.Fatguy. When we open this box of 15,000 mechanical spiders, they will burrow into you and start doing their work. It shouldn't hurt at all and you'll be fit as a fiddle in six hours."

[–]GiPes 2 points3 points ago

[–]Bainemo 58 points59 points ago

You can always count on the top comment being the same as the last time this was posted, because Reddit is an unchanging mass

[–]papabusche 14 points15 points ago

the bit about "never become overweight" technology?

then why did you comment on the #2 comment?

[–]Klexicon 4 points5 points ago

For me this comment shows up as number one. Not everyone's reddit appears the same way.

[–]papabusche 0 points1 point ago

While I understand your point, I understood "top" to mean "top" rather than "comment that shows up at the top", Which could vary depending on how you filter.

[–]Bainemo 3 points4 points ago

Give it time

[–]danE3030 7 points8 points ago

This man can read the future, folks.

[–]hoobsher 4 points5 points ago

then why are you still here? like Gandhi somebody other than Gandhi (apparently) said, be the change you want to see in the world. if you want reddit to stop being an unchanging mass, maybe you should start that change by leaving it. we won't miss you.

[–]staffell 2 points3 points ago

But also, because it is FUCKING obvious.

[–]immissemily 1 point2 points ago

Walle called it.

[–]SA1L 0 points1 point ago

I was going to say, I've seen that movie too.

[–]christianboygenius 12 points13 points ago

Fuck this. We can stay in shape regardless of the available technology. The way I see it, technology makes our lives easier and accomplish work for us so we can do things and focus on what really matters. One of these things includes eating right and physical exercise. I would also include social interactions and relationships. I would have to include education and learning. Most of all: having fun!

Technology won't make us overweight and hopefully by the time we are smart enough to have this type of technology we will be smart enough to realize how important it is to stay healthy and in shape.

This is coming from an ex-fat kid. I lost 80lbs over the course of 10 months and dropped from 260 to 180. I feel a lot healthier now, I require much less sleep, and I'm 10x happier overall. Best thing I have ever done in my life so far.

[–]sammwwise 3 points4 points ago

I like to think we could use technology to breed stronger and smarter humans in the future.

[–]LieutenantClone 2 points3 points ago

We could do it now, but people are afraid of it. I mean, just look at the stigma against genetically modified produce, and that's just plants, not even animals or humans.

[–]TyMan210 1 point2 points ago

It happened in the Star Trek universe, although it led to massive wars. Copied from the wiki:

"The Augments rose to power and held dominance over a large portion of Humanity, beginning in the early 1990s. Among the most notorious of these superhuman conquerors was Khan Noonien Singh, who in 1992 became the 'absolute ruler' of more than a quarter of the planet, from Asia through the Middle East."

"The Eugenics Wars (or the Great Wars) were a series of conflicts fought on Earth between 1993 and 1996. The result of a scientific attempt to improve the Human race through selective breeding and genetic engineering, the wars devastated parts of Earth, by some estimates officially causing some 30 million deaths, and nearly plunging the planet into a new Dark Age."

[–]sammwwise 1 point2 points ago

Holy shit, that's a crazy story. It wasn't what I had in mind, but very interesting.

[–]atikiNik 0 points1 point ago

Exactly. There's a reason we started cooking meat. Humans are like a virus, there's no cure, and we're getting stronger.

[–]plainsnailing 13 points14 points ago

Long before the lazy fckers start to flood into hibernation chambers of VR rooms, there will be a faction of humanity that wants to remain uneffected by the decay of technology and rid themselves of all but the most essential technologies, and I plan to be among them. Life can grow fat, feckless and fcking useless and rot away, but I'll be frolicking in the woods, and so will my children, and my children's children, and so forth. Heck, we may even make it to Mars and make terraforming a hobby.

[–]skillet42 24 points25 points ago

[–]LustrousWS6 0 points1 point ago

Came here to say this. U missed the Avatar part, OP! Lol... for some reason the idea that anyone will be able to live for ever frightens me... talk about a paradigm shift...

[–]TypicalHaikuResponse 1 point2 points ago

Forever is an overstatement. Just far longer than natural human timespans. Software glitches and hardware fails. Even with backups the avatars will eventually cease to exist as well

[–]LustrousWS6 0 points1 point ago

That's a very good point. It is still scary. Imagine how quickly our population will increase. I suppose our "needs" will decrease?* per capita but it's just... unsettling how quickly things will probably change once (if) this research gets rolling with strong financial support - and assuming the science behind it is sound.

Next we'll grow thin again through use of personalised medicine or gene therapy, then we'll lose the need for a biological body and start replacing organs with machines, then eventually we'll find a way of moving the consciousness from the brain into an artificial brain or computer. [–]spankymuffin 2 points3 points ago

That'd be awesome. Then again, who the fuck needs a great body when we're all plugged in and interacting "online"?

Hell, I'm sure even the morbidly obese would live to age 100-something in the future.

(Provided we don't get wiped out by some super virus, of course...)

[–]runswithpaper 1 point2 points ago

There is a short story by Marshall Brain (founder of howstuffworks.com) called Manna where near the end the main guy finds out about brain computer implants that let you experience full immersion VR, one of the coolest features is they work both ways, while your mind plays in VR your body is put through a rigorous exercise session, all the benefits of working at to ones maximum potential and none of the boring monotonous drawbacks.

[–]ForumWarrior 1 point2 points ago

Ive always liked that story about how the first AI eliminated middle management and essentially turned people into robots.
