Actually, no one can exactly say who this man is. Irene Eckler says this is her father August Landmesser, but another Family believes that this is Gustav Wegert, who worked at Blohm & Voss in Hamburg at the time that this picture was taken. He was a deeply religious person and therefore he did not want to give the „Hitlergruß“. Nevertheless, both stories come to the same moral. I have this picture on the Wall above my Computer and I find it to be really inspiring. Have an upvote!

[–]Orbitron[S] 34 points35 points ago

Interesting! I didn't know there was a debate about his identity.

[–]apextek 14 points15 points ago

back in those days, the gestapo would scan the crowd for this, these were signs of dissidents and independent thinkers

[–]Hand_Sanitizer3000 0 points1 point ago

familiar story

[–]CoffeeHigh 0 points1 point ago

That is crazy...

[–]aggrazel 9 points10 points ago

He's just there looking for his dad's diary.

[–]holdthecup 6 points7 points ago

[–]InsertOffensiveName 2 points3 points ago

Maybe its just the guy who got executed 1 day after this picture was taken ...

[–]telllos 0 points1 point ago

Executed for day dreaming

[–]0ffGrid 0 points1 point ago

if somebody didn't examine the picture and saw it over your computer from a distance away, they might think you're a nazi or somthing

[–]WolweraZ 0 points1 point ago

No Problem! I am more concerned about what they would think if they saw my screen...

[–]illmatic707 0 points1 point ago

Looks like Babe Ruth.

[–]keiyakins -5 points-4 points ago

It's actually my great grand uncle. He lost his arm in an industrial accident.

(No it's not. Well not to my knowledge.)

[–]Crolle -1 points0 points ago

He was also maybe scratching his balls... Who knows?

[–]Flapjack_ 150 points151 points ago

"I sure like this Hitler fella too bad my arms are too tired to do this swell salute he came up with for us"

[–]TheRobotRabbit 42 points43 points ago

I always wondered how funny it would be if it turned out this guy was just not paying attention, or had hurt his shoulder, and we've been praising him as a hero ever since. He could have been Hitler's biggest fan, since we apparently can't even prove who the guy was.

[–]Furfire 27 points28 points ago

It's the idea of him that we praise, not so much the man himself since no one actually even knows who it is.

[–]BulkUpTaru 9 points10 points ago

If he isnt the hero everyone makes him out to be, should we really be praising a lie?

[–]ceeker 3 points4 points ago

My grandfather got in trouble for not saluting Hitler, but rather than being a hero he actually wasn't paying attention and didn't see his motorcade.

Not that he was pro-Hitler - he was in Berlin as a forced labourer, taken from his home country. He luckily got away with it, pretty sure a forced act of defiance given his circumstances would have been lethal.

[–]MrWasabi 2 points3 points ago

I heard they got him and did terrible things to him. But maybe he was just arrested.

[–]aposter 2 points3 points ago

I can't ID the few uniforms there to tell for sure where that is. The uniform in the very bottom looks vaguely Nazi, but the other looks more U.S. police officer-ish. There is a chance that it is Americans reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Originally the Pledge was recited while using the Bellamy salute, but when that was deemed too similar to the Nazi salute it was changed to placing your hand over your heart by act of Congress on 22 December 1942.

[–]I_CAPE_RATS 2 points3 points ago

TIL schoolchildren saluted the US flag like Nazis for a year after Germany and the US declared war.

[–]Dingus1994 0 points1 point ago

At my 6th grade graduation, we did this salute. Years later I wonder why the hell anyone would use it.

[–]TheRobotRabbit 0 points1 point ago

I'm fairly certain that we know the context of the photo, I think it's just the identity of this particular man that is in question.

[–]aposter 0 points1 point ago

Well, I'm glad you know the context. Would you mind sharing? I am curious what and where.

[–]TheRobotRabbit 0 points1 point ago

Actually, no one can exactly say who this man is. Irene Eckler says this is her father August Landmesser, but another Family believes that this is Gustav Wegert, who worked at Blohm & Voss in Hamburg at the time that this picture was taken. First post in the comments. The man in the photo is one of these two men. Both were in Hamburg. Hamburg is in Germany.

[–]aposter 0 points1 point ago

Good to know the context.

Also, just to let you know, it may be first post in your comments, but not mine. No matter how I sort them, that one does not come up in the top ten, much less first.

[–]TheRobotRabbit 0 points1 point ago

Really? Weird. I thought it was universally-sorted across Reddit. Sometimes, this site makes no sense.

[–]aposter 0 points1 point ago

No. It is all controlled by the algorithms. Depending on yours and others votes along with which of the sorting options you choose it can look different. I usually default to controversial as my sort option rather than top or hot.

[–]Finger_Blaster 3 points4 points ago

A Nazi John Dorian. "Don't forget to salute, don't forget to salute, don't forget....Dammit I missed it".

[–]ThePoose 1 point2 points ago

Also the one arm salute was popular with no bad connotations even through the beginning of the war. There are pictures out there of some pretty famous figures from the Allies throwing the heil.

[–]lemonpjb 8 points9 points ago

I'm sure some peeps already know this, but the Bellamy salute and its different forms have been in use for a long time. Up until Italian and Nazi fascists started adopting it, it was a widely used in America as a way of saluting the flag.

[–]dialectical_wizard 1 point2 points ago

TIL. Thanks!

[–]AustinTreeLover -3 points-2 points ago

Twist: It's actually the Olympic salute

[–]ememdiputs 127 points128 points ago

On reddit, this person would have been downvoted and no one would have ever known he existed.

[–]willkurada 46 points47 points ago

It's almost as if you shouldn't make reddit your primary source of information.

[–]scottvr4 19 points20 points ago

Almost.

[–]n1nj4_v5_p1r4t3 8 points9 points ago

its becoming fox news

[–]Thegreatbart 7 points8 points ago

A very liberal fox news.

[–]n1nj4_v5_p1r4t3 1 point2 points ago

i think there is a station for that.

[–]Pillagerguy 5 points6 points ago

Not really. Not the same as FOX.

[–]ChuckDeezNuts 0 points1 point ago

MSNBC is pretty close to a counter-part.

[–]SatinHandyWipe 1 point2 points ago

Pretty sure it's called.. "The Daily Show"

[–]Lord_Purple_ 0 points1 point ago

The Daily Show is intentional comedy bullshit. This is a very important distinction.

[–]troyoyoyoy 1 point2 points ago

Until you bring up gun control...

[–]goodbetterbestbested 1 point2 points ago

Reddit is not a news website (except /r/news, of course)

[–]MrGuttFeeling 5 points6 points ago

No problem faggot.

[–]sinkingbird 2 points3 points ago

On reddit, this picture would get reposted every week.

[–]Tennysonn 13 points14 points ago

I was trying to find a picture of this without the circle to maybe print and hang or something...then I realized how important it was people who have never seen it before that the circle be there

[–]Orbitron[S] 5 points6 points ago

Ah ah! Yes, you should definitely leave the circle.

[–]n1nj4_v5_p1r4t3 4 points5 points ago

no, its like wheres waldo. the effect of them looking, tttthhheeennn seeing it, once you see it you cant unsee it.

[–]buhfest 5 points6 points ago

The problem is without the circle it just looks like a whole crowd of heil hitlers, making you look like a Nazi.

[–]SatinHandyWipe 5 points6 points ago

"Uhh yeah, Vista print.. can I get this in 5' x 5' and frame it? I wanna hang it up the waiting area of my office.

I think it's... inspiring. "

[–]n1nj4_v5_p1r4t3 1 point2 points ago

a conversation starter, then they feel like a dick for thinking you were a dick

[–]melatonia 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, without the circle it sort of sends the opposite message.

[–]Notemy 2 points3 points ago

The best version I could find

[–]ThatsMyBarber 2 points3 points ago

Maybe the same photo but with that particular person colorized? It would be a bit more subtle.

[–]jlennon4422 0 points1 point ago

I bet if you caption it, like those motivational posters or something, it would probably work

[–]skywalker777 12 points13 points ago

"ya, you know, i just can't get behind this guy for some reason."

[–]Chubbstock 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, that's totally the unsure look on his face.

"I dunno guys, something about this just don't sit right with me. I don't think I'm gonna sign up for this business..."

[–]rtilde 10 points11 points ago

Wolfgang felt like a fool when he noticed he was the only one in the crowd that didn't know the way to the post office.

[–]K1N6F15H 2 points3 points ago

That was word for word what a Far Side comic would sound like.

[–]PercyChuggs 8 points9 points ago

Good to see Babe Ruth had some morals.

[–]Kukko18 20 points21 points ago

"One of the things people always forget is that the first country the Nazis invaded was their own"

[–]AlphaHotel_94 2 points3 points ago

Who said that? I'm curious.

[–]WarPhalange 8 points9 points ago

That's one of the other things people always forget.

[–]therealcjhard 0 points1 point ago

Congrats on outlasting that downvote brigade.

[–]Kukko18 1 point2 points ago

Dr. Abraham Erskine (Stanley Tucci) in the film Captain America: The First Avenger. I know it's just a movie but it really makes you think that many so-called Nazis didn't really have any other choice.

[–]gbimmer 7 points8 points ago

'Tis a great way to commit suicide.

[–]utdude999 6 points7 points ago

"This kills the German."

[–]snarebyte 5 points6 points ago

The squeaky cog gets the grease...but seriously, screw you Hitler.

[–]BrotherDamascus 33 points34 points ago

So brave.

[–]ElGoddamnDorado 7 points8 points ago

LITERALLY HITLER.

[–]wahinelf 7 points8 points ago

The kid behind him cracks me up. Just resting his arm.

[–]9bowlsofsoup 1 point2 points ago

So much upvotes, but one guy just didn't get the joke.

[–]Random 5 points6 points ago

We all think 'wow, brave.' Certainly I think that.

And then we go back to being part of the vast vast majority of people who let our rights be eroded on a daily basis.

I remember in psych class one day the prof told us about an experiment done to examine the psychology of prison camp guards. The experiment found that a huge percent of people will go along with harming another human being as long as they are told that they have no personal responsibility. Then he asked us, as a class, which of us would rebel. We all thought we would be the exception.

The point being, most of us, in that setting and in that culture of fear, would not be that guy.

Something to think about next time you have a chance to stand against the particular tyrannies of your own country.

[–]Mirm83 1 point2 points ago

I think you are referring to the Milgram Experiment on obedience, or is there one similar to it involving camp guards?

Milgram Experiment - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W147ybOdgpE&feature=related#t=02m53s

[–]Random 1 point2 points ago

Yes, that's the one - the Milgram experiment on obedience.

[–]CurkyHangles 9 points10 points ago

[–]numba1dmxfan 1 point2 points ago

Popular videos on porn sites are usually only popular because they are popular. It's tautological porn.

[–]Sleep45 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of the video the other day of the 1 min war memorial alarm, but you would still see a person or 2 walking.

[–]SwimGuys 1 point2 points ago

Another guy on the bottom right of the circle is not saluting.

[–]ishoyu 0 points1 point ago

It is me or is the guy in the top right corner (white shirt) not saluting either? I guess his arm could be blocked by the guy in front's head, but it doesn't look like there's room for that.

[–]gloomdoom 0 points1 point ago

That dude directly southeast of the guy refusing is starting directly into the camera and it's creeping me out.

[–]Ryio5 0 points1 point ago

[–]AlextheGerman 0 points1 point ago

Goddamn it reddit. You people always exegerate everything. Can't we talk reasonably about the posted content? Does it always have to be extremes? Stop calling everyone a "boss" for doing nothing, nor call everyone else "literally Hitler", words lose their meaning that way. Just stick to the facts.

This piscture is nice, it clearly delivers a message that is important.

[–]Satros 0 points1 point ago

the people talking behind him are like "this guy is soooo dead"

[–]Cerylidae 0 points1 point ago

Courage, perhaps. Conviction, certainly. Power? Not so much. His refusal to salute didn't destroy Nazi Germany. Eleven time zones of Joseph Stalin and the iron ass-kicking boot of Patton did that.

Yes, yes, and Montgomery, and the rest of the UK, and the broader commonwealth, and the other American commanders, and the partisans and resistance fighters, and the Red Army, and all the people who worked and toiled to provide for the armies. But that's not as fun to say.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

They have this photo in the Topography of Terror (Museum at the old Nazi headquarters( in Berlin. I recall it saying that they were pretty sure it was a certain fellow, but weren't able to confirm. I think he was reprimanded for this, but nothing serious. This was definitely taken during the early years of Nazi power, before they started killing people.

[–]bluesnappa 0 points1 point ago

maybe he was up all night getting drunk? i was gonna say he could of been mentally challenge but thats impossible because the nazi's killed them all.

[–][deleted] -5 points-4 points ago

As a non-American, I find this to be all too close to what you see in American schools each morning. Saluting the flag, being brainwahed into a hyper nationalist nation. Not questioning your leadership. IN fact the US used the roman salute before the Nazis.

[–]exactlycake 18 points19 points ago

As an american, not really. We don't have to put our hands over our hearts or sing/speak the national anthem, and no one ever bothered me when I didn't do it. I'm not even anti-american, I just wanted to seem like a cool rebel*. Also, we don't salute the flag in school. Only military personal or people who join military clubs do that.

In fact, my school system only had this in elementary school, not in middle School or high School. They might have played it on the morning television show but everyone ignored it and talked. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Also, lots of nations have anthems in the morning in public schools. I know, for instance, that Japan does.

*No one ever thought I was a cool rebel :(

[–]Jaerdo 3 points4 points ago

Power doesn't come from the ability to force action. Power comes from the ability to make others take actions of their own accord, not because they have to but because they want to.

[–]exactlycake 1 point2 points ago

I might have actually joined in if that had been the case. Nothing says cool rebel in elementary school like cursing in verse.

[–]Que3n_Chrys4lis 1 point2 points ago

Canada plays the national anthem during the morning at schools as well (at least for Ontario). It's pretty standard. We're required to stand, but we don't have to sing along or salute any flags (most classes don't even have the Canadian flag present in the room) and afterwards we can do whatever we want for a bit.

[–]ExistentLOList 0 points1 point ago

I think it depends on where you went to school. I also stopped putting my hand over my heart for the pledge. In fact, I stopped doing it altogether. I didn't stand or anything. It wasn't for any badass reason, either. Wasn't protesting anything or making a statement. I just thought I'd outgrown it and I preferred to sit quietly at my desk while everyone else did it. Most people left it alone. Only one girl was like, "You're a bad American!" when she noticed. Otherwise, though, it was fine. I can imagine that in the south people would make a stink over it.

[–]lillian0 0 points1 point ago

I tend to say it in my head, if that. I put my body through the motions, and what not, but I never really do anything.

Once didn't put my hand over my heart.

My teacher went full bitch mode about how I was being unpatriotic, and how disrespectful I was being.

I never made that mistake again.

Also, I've had said teacher, who's batshit by the way, for the past 4 years. Every morning.

[–]exactlycake 0 points1 point ago

Are you home-schooled?

[–]lillian0 0 points1 point ago

Uhm... no? I've had her since... 5th grade. I'm in a special math/science/english program. She's the only one in the district qualified to teach it.

It's not remedial or anything, but it's for kids who's parents wanted them to learn more with a crazy bitch of a teacher.

[–]Lots42 4 points5 points ago

A lot of American schools allow one to sit down and not do anything during the Morning Brainwashing.

[–]I_Ride_Like_A_Hack 7 points8 points ago

As an American, you don't know what you're talking about.

Edit: nice troll account, I'm a moron for not seeing it at first.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

Speaking of someone being brainwashed..

[–]reddKidney 7 points8 points ago

as a non american you clearly have no clue what you are looking at.

[–]theitgrunt 1 point2 points ago

In the U.S. the Supreme Court has affirmed that schools must not infringe on the rights of children in regards to Flag Salutes. Back during WWI, students in the U.S. and Canada were being expelled from public schools for not participating in the flag salute.

[–]I3ombastic 0 points1 point ago

As a non-American,

Yet you think you know what you see in American schools each morning?

We have our little pledge of alleigance, and that's it. No one is forced to participate. Anyone can just sit down and ignore it (I know I did). It's a remnant of the Cold War that just kind of stuck around as tradition. Once you get past elementary school (at ~ 11 years of age) all of that disappears anyway.

There are a lot of societal/cultural reasons that Americans are obsessed with thinking they're the best - but childhood brainwashing just isn't one of them.

[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points ago

Most non-Americans know more about America than Americans. Especially politics. It's because we have sane factual media and access to things like reddit. All you have is Fox News and Cnn.

[–]sirkablaam 5 points6 points ago

It's because we have sane factual media and access to things like reddit.

  1. If you think any country is totally free from inaccurate, unbiased media, you are very ignorant and possibly even very patriotic.

  2. Americans such as myself clearly have access to reddit too, which 90% of the articles are from the American sources you are against.

[–]I3ombastic 2 points3 points ago

I think this guy is majorly trolling us. Literally every single post he's ever made on reddit is just USA-bashing.

Most of it is WAY over the top too. 99% sure he's just bored and trolling his ass off.

The Daily Mail?

Bild?

All of Italy's media?

Russia Today?

The Sun?

In which country do you live that doesn't have its share of sensationalist tabloid media?

I would put The Weekly World News (RIP) ahead of half of the UK's rags.

Sometimes I can't tell if you're just a good troll account, or just a massive idiot.

I have never attended a school where the pledge of allegiance was said at any time, and I attended a public school.

As a non American. I don't care what the yanks do, as long as they don't start another war I'm cool.

I wouldn't be surprised if everyone is thinking this man was a great guy for not saluting but I bet this is what he was thinking "damn! my arms are really sore from killing all them jews with that rusty crowbar. Ill just rest them this one time so I can be ready for the next slaughtering!"

Ill show myself out

This is how I feel when I'm on Facebook and my conservative family is discussing Chick-Fil-A.

[–]lbmouse -2 points-1 points ago

That pretty much sums up how I feel when somebody starts a prayer before a holiday meal or at a group event.

[–]anyalicious -1 points0 points ago

I am so sorry you live in a country where not praying will get you killed and your family ripped apart.

[–]panzerdriver -1 points0 points ago

He probably got shot in the head.

[–]Backstop 1 point2 points ago

No, just thrown in prison and his family split up, then eventually drafted into a penal division of the army and killed in action.

[–]panzerdriver 0 points1 point ago

Very good research.

[–]Aschebescher 1 point2 points ago

He probably didn't.

[–]Aschebescher 1 point2 points ago

Yes, but not for refusing the salute. The Nazis were bad enough, we don't need to make up additional stories of civialians getting shot for refusing the salute.

[–]panzerdriver 0 points1 point ago

Define "bad enough" ? They were the worst, and yes they did shoot people in the head for trivial reasons, just read about their history. By the way this still happens in North Korea, and people just forget about it or make jokes like it's a normal part of everyday life. Being here with all the freedom we can wish for is an utter miracle of human cooperation- the Nazis were cold blooded and calculated cogs of genocide.

He's probably a Jehovah's witness. Still gonna upvote?

[–]vjjinmymouth -2 points-1 points ago

That's the way I feel when my family prays before big meals.
