More like science: allows you to waste billions of dollars that could have been spent on useful shit because you're trying to compete with the Russians, and your scientific research is ultimately constrained and directed towards the ends that people in power want them to be directed;

And religion: can justify flying you into a building, but on its own will not motivate you to fly planes into buildings because the people that do that usually have other reasons why they're angry (like the American military bombing Iraq for 10 years, giving billions of dollars in weapons to Israel, and putting their bases in your country).
